The war to save the Swathe is far from over.

Since the Battle of Shal Gara, the Scions have lurked in the dangerous loam, hunting the survivors of the Last Clan. But a malice grows in the treetops and the canopies of the bloodwoods. Fireborn lies creep like a rot through the Swathe, turning citizen against citizen, brother against brother. Their purpose? To open another fiery gate to the demon realm.

Racing against time, Tarko and Serisi must fight not only the demon threat but their own growing power. The bond of nectra and demon blood is as alluring as a precipice, and one just as perilous. As they become ever more entwined, the path to victory will present a to hold back, or to give in to the rage building within them.

But these are desperate times, and such times call for desperate measures, even if it means becoming the very monster you're fighting against.

I listened to this book on Audible.

I enjoyed this novel just as much, perhaps more, than the first. The first had the aspect of demon possession stories I love, where the host and parasite have to learn to adapt to and/or work with one another, but this one managed to strengthen the relationship and expand on it. I very much enjoyed the dynamic between Sirisi and Tarko, and I also really really enjoyed the scenes from Sirisi’s point of view. Tarko’s slow adoption of Sirisi’s ruthlessness moved at a pace that was realistic and understandable, showing how even when we are determined to avoid abusing our power we often end up at points where we make mistakes in how we handle said temptation.

Since we’re talking about characters, Tarko does not deserve Rawlish, but I do like how when he does omit the truth and she called him on it, he came clean right away, and then he never did it again. I also like that they do things together, and she’s the first person he goes to as a sounding board. He truly cares about her and loves her, and that respectful, normal relationship is something we rarely see in fantasy, and especially not in fantasy where a good character is encroaching on morally gray.

Now, there are a lot of characters in this novel. And while they all have distinct personalities, sometimes it did feel like Atalowe and Pell only came into the room, so to speak, when they had something to do. Esterelle and Rawlish held the stage quite a bit along with Tarko (in fact, I love how women outnumber the men considerably in this novel - we don’t often see that, especially in a novel written by dudes) but I kind of wished Attolowe did a bit more in the latter half of the story, because I felt like she kind of drifted.

Likewise, and this is really the only even close to negative thing I have to say about the novel, there is a twist I saw coming a mile away. Given this is a novel more about magic battles than anything, perhaps this is me being too picky, but a few more red herrings would have been nice.

In terms of the battles and fights, they are top-notch: exciting, fun, and surprising in their trajectory at times. And normally a bunch of scenes of a person fighting others in an arena I’d be like, oh my god, please stop, but they were spaced out enough and few enough in number they were fun and integral to the story. And it also provided the best places for Tarko to let his darker side shine, which was as fun to read as it was horrific.

The plot is a quest narrative - the entire thing is just them trying to tell the Swathe that the demons are here and no one listens to them - but the snags they run into along the way make the stopovers, side-quests, and the arena battles make sense. The book is long, but it doesn’t drag, and the writing has lots of details and description. I’d never call it lyrical or overly deep, but it’s easy to follow and the dialogue is great.

The world-building is fun and I love the little details here and there, plus lancewings are such a fun idea. They were in the first one, too, but we get more of them in this one.

Now, my favourite character is definitely Red Eye, the Byronic (in the sense of being a grouchy), moody wizard. I don’t know why, but I just love him to bits. I find him incredibly funny, and if the authors happens to read my review and are inspired to give him a girlfriend for some reason, please make it a grumpy-sunshine dynamic!

My weird crush on a fictional minor character aside, this book is a lot of fun and I eagerly await the third one!

What a fantastic book 2 of this series. We learn more about how Tarko and Serisi meld together to be able to weild their strange power, how they work with the Scions trying to protect bloodwoods and the loam alike, the new ali's they make along the way, and the twist at the end of the tale is really good!

Can't wait for book 3!

Demon’s Rage is the second book in The Bloodwood Saga and continues the story of Tarko and his demon compatriot Serisi, who along with the rest of the Scions of Shal’ Gara continue to fight the demon threat against the Swathe.

Since the fall of Shal’ Gara, the Scions of Shal’Gara have been living in the Loam, hunting the renegade demons from the Last Clan who have foresworn that they will open a portal from the Void and let the God of Chaos loose upon the land.

Battling treachery, disbelief and themselves, the Scions must fight the growing power of the Fireborn and attempt to thwart the demon’s plans to decimate the Swathe.

I have to say that I love this series and I cannot help being swept up by it. The book in itself does not hold many surprises and it is easy to determine what is going to happen in the main overarching aspects of the story. However, it is the characters that hold dominion over the reader. And yes, whilst the reader may guess the direction of the various plot points and the direction the book is going. It is how the characters get there that is the most entertaining.

The main story of the book is the changing dynamic between Tarko and Serisi and how the bond that was forged in the first book is now growing and changing. The changing relationship between the two is really interesting in that Tarko does at times become quite unlikeable and there were many times that I was shaking my head at Tarko as he becomes more of the weapon that is needed to fight against the Demons and Fireborn as they become stronger.

As usual, the writing is full throttle and there is not much time to catch your breath as the story unfolds.

One minor quibble that I have with this book is that I didn’t feel that the side characters, Pel, Atalawe or Esteral had as much to do in this book. I felt that they tended to stand on the sidelines a little more than in the previous book, as the lens is mainly focussed on Tarko and Serisi. However, I can let this aspect go as on the whole the book is a bloody good fantasy adventure story. There are a number of new characters introduced in this book, with my favourite being the giant bird Vole who has powers of his own.

One of the things that I like about this book is how it amalgamates progression fantasy into the story without it becoming the main focus of the story. Now I will admit that progression fantasy is not one of my favourite sub genres, but Demon’s Rage makes it more palatable to my tastes as there are many other things going on to maintain my attention.

Now one of the things that I will mention that disappoints me is the reach that this book has had. Unfortunately, there are only a few people shouting about this book, and for me, more people need to get their reading gear round this book and shout from the houses about it.

If you want a good adventure that has a splash of progression with a healthy dose of Venom, then Demon’s Rage is a book that is worth picking up.

Boom, David Estes and Ben Galley are back with a bang in this smashing series. I've been waiting just over a year to find out where my favourite characters have ended up after the battle of Shal Gara, and damn the two authors have delivered. It was bloody fantastic.

Demon's Rage is the second book in this new and exciting series, The Bloodwood Saga. The worldbuilding, plot, and characters are brilliant. It's so fast-paced, action-packed with battles, and the magic elements are excellent with a few twists and turns to keep us on the edge of our seats.

A fantastically new world created by two excellent authors, David Estes and Ben Galley, have come together to bring us a magical world of the forest realm, giant bloodwood trees of the Swathe full of demons, fire, and chaos and big ass humming birds called lancewings for us fantasy lovers to get lost in.

I absolutely love a good collaboration between two good authors who are on top of their game in the fantasy realm. The story flows so amazingly that you can't tell who wrote what scenes or chapters because it's so beautifully interweaved together.

In this epic progression fantasy, and after the last books ending. Tarkosi Terelta and his inner demon Serisi, the daughter of the demon king, find them selves in exile after the fall of their city of Shal Gara. After defeating the demon king and his minions, Tarkosi and his fellow Scions are on the hunt across the Swathe to hunt down and kill any demons left.

But the threat of demons returning to their world in their hordes bringing all types of monsters and chaos is inevitable as betrayal looms in every corner of the realm. Tarkosi and his companions must convince the rest of the Swathe and the All Mother that the demons are real and that they intend to burn and annihilate Swathe and wipe them out altogether.

Damn, what a roller coaster of read, and that bloody ending. I can't wait for the next instalment. If you haven't checked out this series yet, you are missing out. I very highly recommend that you remedy that right now....😁🔥👹

"Demon's Rage" builds upon the strong worldbuilding and character development from its predecessor, "Demon's Reign". I will forever be impressed by the setting- a land with a forest stretching most of the continent, with massive trees stretching over a mile in height. The characters are all unique in their own way and don't blend together. They have their own brands of characterization. For instance, Eztaral's stoicism is more of that like a Blood Knight, where Redeye's stoicism is more of a social introvert. Tarko's cautiousness to the impending situation contrasts with his girlfriend Ralish's cautiousness, and is a well-handled plot line throughout the work. Tesq (Tarko's sister) expresses her family loyalty in a different way than Tarko's mother and brother do, and each way is acceptable in its own style. Everyone handles situations in different ways, and I think that is a strength of these books.

My only real criticism is that I feel that this book and its predecessor were on the lengthy side, and could have been cut down a bit in length. I would prefer the third book doesn't increase to, say, 800+ pages in length. But still, the story flowed well, and the plot progression was good. The ending was nice (just like the previous book), so the buildup to it is worthwhile there.

4/5 rating. The stakes keep building up, and I'm looking forward to the third book.

Note- I liked the elemental magic system, it gave me vibes of bending from Avatar the Last Airbender. It's well-established, and not too complex and rule-driven that it becomes tedious to follow.

Why I picked this up: I enjoyed the first book in the series and wanted to continue.

Genre: Dark fantasy
Tone: A lizard on a stick; looks weird but tastes like chicken. Chicken is good.

Plot: A bunch of outcasts uproot betrayers to humanity, then a tournament. I liked the world exploration in the first half, but I wasn't much of a fan of the tournament as I found it a little repetitive. A predictable outcome, but still enjoyable.

Pacing: Mid. Doesn't drag. There's a lot of story, but it's broken up with action.

Prose: Accessible, maybe a little dry for my taste but definitely not chewy. The demon adds flavour. Mostly first person POV with an interesting switch to third on occasion.

World: The highlight of the series. The amazon ewok world expands to some cool locations. Magic tree juice is still a thing.

Characters: I'm most invested with our main pair. There's more personality bleeding between Tarko and Serisi while a romantic interest acts as a good-conscience anchor.

Conflict: A little political, less environmental, and with a splash of cultist ambush and betrayal. Within the main group there's personality clashes and a struggle with a literal inner demon.

Overall enjoyment: A great follow-up to the series. Looking forward to the next, which I'm assuming will be the conclusion.

When I was gushing to my husband about the worldbuilding in this series, he quipped, “Ah, Ents in the Mist” and that definitely sums up this page-turner if you add “with demons”.

I loved every moment of this second part in the Bloodwood saga. Tarkosi is a wonderfully complex character. In book one, his arc was that of loser to hero, but his growth continues in this novel with a fantastic exploration of our capacity for evil and how easy it is to lose sight of ourselves as we react without thinking to the events unfolding around us. If the previous volume was about the hero, this one is all about the monster, but with twists and turns that make for a compelling read.

My only gripe is with the proofreading errors. With a little more polishing, this will become one of the best fantasy series out there. As it is, I give 4,5 stars because I was thrown out of the story innumerable times.

That said, there is a lot to love about this story and I absolutely cannot wait for book 3.

Since their exile, the Scions have been hunting the remainder of the Last Clan demons and trying to stop the Fireborn from opening another door between worlds. Haidak Baron, the leader of the Fireborn is always a couple of steps ahead of the Scions and thwarts them at every turn.

The Scions are taken in and aided by the Lost River Clan who have seen evidence of the demons.

The longer Tarko and Serisi are joined the stronger they get as they learn to share one body and Tarko finally trusts Serisi enough to let her have control sometimes.

Action, magic, intrigue, betrayal, plot twist, amazing characters, and yes, Lance Wings for our Scions. A dark tale where you win at all costs or lose everything you know. Can't wait for the next installment of this epic series.

Fans of either Estes or Galley will appreciate both author's contributions to this delightful series. Their individual talents mesh beautifully to create compelling, interesting characters, intricate but logical power structures, mesmerizing magic systems, and gorgeous world building.

In this sequel to Demon's Reign, Estes and Galley deliver an immaculately crafted addition to the high fantasy pantheon. Readers once again join Tarkosi Terelta, his resident demon, Serisi, and the Scions of the Sixth Born in their quest to save the Swathe from an invading demon horde. Prepare yourself for high-flying, high-speed battles, satisfying triumphs, and gut-wrenching betrayals. Estes and Galley have outdone themselves.

My only complaint is that book three isn't already available to purchase.

The Bloodwood Saga series is fantasy at its best. The first book hooked me, but the second one really stepped it up a notch. Excellent plot twists, magic system, and overall world building. Can’t wait for book 3!
