Call Me Quixote

Rate this book
CALL ME QUIXOTELove on the line.Quixote, an elder wedding officiant, learns her ride will be late picking her up after a ceremony. She joins a group of young lesbians by their campfire while she waits, sharing her whiskey and wisdom. Curious about her name, they ask why she chose it. Q trades them a story for a s’more.

Twenty years ago, in a city far, far away, a series of sudden coincidences propelled two middle-aged Minnesota lesbians into the adventure of a lifetime. While seizing a fleeting opportunity, Genta and Maria receive both taunts from bigoted protestors, and supportive PB&Js from drag queen nuns. They experience romance in the City of Love one night and suffer a wild winter storm throughout the next. Stubbornly refusing to give up, they hold their place in line for over twenty-four hours. Can they reach their impossible dream to be legally married, or will the windmill giant, Fear, defeat their love?

Read Genta Sebastian’s fascinating account of a remarkable Valentine’s weekend in 2004 when Mayor Gavin Newsom provided the first legal marriage licenses for same-sex couples in the United States of America. She was there and this is what happened.

Genta Sebastian runs with scissors, always laughs without shame, sometimes writes naked, and can’t help dreaming big.

A multiple award-winning author, she sometimes writes Sapphic romances, like the Troublemaker series:

When Butches Cry (2nd ed. rel. August, 2023)as:
A Troublemaker Never Cries
A Troublemaker May Surprise (rel. August, 2023)
A Troublemaker Sometimes Lies (exp. rel. date Nov. 2023)
A Troublemaker in Her Eyes (exp. rel. date May, 2024)

She’s also written two novels for children living in Rainbow Families: Riding the Rainbow (GCLS award winner 2015) for middle-school readers, and A Man’s Man for Young Adults.

She stepped into the horror genre with: We Don’t Say Gay in Tranquility Bay! a trigger-warning horror story with a twist.

Lost is a novelette right out of the Twilight Zone. A grieving widow finds a strange child lost in a snowstorm, made of snow and ice.

But she started out writing wlw (women loving women, i.e. lesbian) erotica short stories that range from super-hot sexy sci-fi Martian/Human first contact, to culinary cunnilinguists, to drag kings, to college and tropical vacations, exotic settings, unforgettable characters, and quirky situations. These stories are fully adult and not intended for young audiences.

Great story telling

Wow, I love this book. Is this a true story? Well, it certainly felt like a true story. Thank you Genta. I felt for the main characters with the haters throwing abuse then the freezing rain wow, what a wonderful way with words. Great story, buy it, read it, you will not regret it.

I stumbled across this book in one of my book groups on Facebook. The author was looking for ARC readers and I jumped on the chance.

I loved the way this is written in both the past and the present, with an elder lesbian wedding officiant sharing the story of how she got married with a younger group of lesbians, who probably haven't gone through some of the same hardships. The transitions are clear, the writing really makes you feel like you're right there with everyone, and the story flows well.

This book will have your emotions all over the place even though it's a short, easy read. I laughed, winced, wowed, and cried, all in the span of 70-odd pages. I'm just bummed I can't share some of my fave quotes since I read it in BookFunnel. But I'm looking forward to reading more books by Genta Sebastian!

Beautiful and inspiring short story

It's a short story about love and the fight for equal rights within the LGBTQ+ community. The story is told from the perspective of one of the two main characters, both of whom are very interesting. The story is beautifully written and inspiring. I particularly enjoyed the reference to "El Quijote" by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, as it was the first book I read as a child.

I highly recommend this story.

I received an ARC for an honest review.

How did I find this book? The universe found it for me. I grew up with parents that loved musical theater and I got to know some of the great musicals, including a few that were made into movies. Man of La Mancha, the story of Don Quixote is one of them. It has many great songs, including The Impossible Dream. I was looking for a song to listen to at bedtime as part of my night time routine, and picked that song. I listened to various artists sing that song over and over for a few weeks. And of course, that went into the internet’s algorithm of offering me anything related to it.

Just like Man of La Mancha, this story tells more than one story at a time, and does so beautifully. After a wedding, a group of friends and the officiant gather around a campfire and the officiant tells her story. I laughed, I cried, it moved me. Instant author follow and several more books added to my to-be-read pile.

What do I want to say about Quixote? A lot actually. I enjoyed how Quixote trades a story for a s’more around the fire and offers some advice for the others gathered there as well. This story touched my heart while reading and I cried. This story has fiction and biographical aspects to it that come across perfectly. For Genta and Maria to go through such hardships during the winter storm took courage, guts, and a whole lot of love for each other and those that were there to offer assistance in weathering the elements. Throughout the story, there were different people who stood out that provided laughs and some much needed comfort to those waiting in line at the court house. People like the nuns, who provided encouragement, coffee, and pb & j’s as people stood in line to get their marriage license. This story-within-a-story is heartwarming and at times a tear jerker.

If you’re LGBTQ+ identifying or an ally, you should read this story. And if you’re not, read it and learn.

This book gave me a chance to reflect on myself and the community I take part in. To be grateful for the freedom I have today being a part of the LGBTQ+, while also feeling inspired to fight for more going forward. It showed me there’s always a choice to make. To choose hope, romance, and happiness even when others try to command otherwise. To find sweetness in bitter days. This book was a mixture of laughs, smiles, tears, and reflection. A fantastic story that needs to be heard.

5 stars. This was beautiful and had me in my feelings. It was also funny and charming. I loved it. Fantastic story telling and the writing was engaging. This is technically non fiction but the way that it's written it makes it easily digestible but it's full of Queer history. A quick read but it was so worth it.

What a great piece of history.

Sometimes we forget our roots and the struggle to get the things that pass for equality that we currently take for granted. The government gives, and the government takes away.

But for six glorious months, they beat the system.

And now the system is trying to beat us, which makes this story all the more important.

Beautiful and breathtaking

As a lesbian was legally married, many years after the San Francisco incident., this hit home in a big way. Such a beautiful story, and one everyone should read. Gay or straight, doesn't matter. Love is love, and there is love abundant in this story.

What a fascinating, amazing and compelling read. An amazing real life account of one couple and their determination to get their gay marriage legalised. Such a well written thought provoking account of a really monumentous holiday weekend in San Francisco. If it was not for people like this the gay community would not enjoy the many rights they have today. I applaud you for what you did and for writing such a wonderful account of it for others to appreciate and understand.
