Tangled Ambition

Rate this book
Taylor Novak is the bane of my existence with her “as per my email” notes and weekend work hours. She also happens to be my direct competition for a promotion.

But when she needs help with a personal matter, I’m the only one there for her. And suddenly my work enemy is my work…friend? After so many years of being her rival, I don’t know what to do with these new feelings. Especially the ones tempting me to bend her over and test the sturdiness of my desk.

As I get to know the surprisingly tender girl underneath the Ice Queen façade, I find myself falling hard for her.

Yet with the promotion in my sights, I can only have one: the job or Taylor.

Content Note: Tangled Ambition is a slow burn enemies to friends to lovers workplace romance between two headstrong lawyers, but it’s also quite angsty. There are multiple discussions of grief, domestic violence, stealthing, and opioid addiction/overdose, and includes an on the page medical abortion, which is a common and safe healthcare procedure that involves ingesting pills.

Ohhhh, I'm such a sucker for ice queen x enemies to lovers romances! ⋆.ೃ࿔*:・

Tangled Ambition is a workplace romance between two lawyers who hate each other A LOT. They were academic rivals in college and have been rivals since then. Now, they're aiming for the same job position and the competition has started.

Dean and Taylor are like water and oil. But are they really like that? It seems like it because they constantly bicker around, argue with each other, and everyone knows they dislike one another. But they slowly find out that they're pretty similar: they're both angry, sad people. And together, they realize that they have much in common!

When Taylor plans to go to get an abortion because of a one-night stand, Dean is there to help her out. She doesn't want to tell anyone, and Dean is there the moment she needs someone the most. At that point, they're still enemies and hate each other. But oh my god Dean is the sweetest, is there for her when she needs her heating pad, sits by her bathroom door when she takes too long if someone happens. He really stepped up and from that point on, their relationship quickly changes.

If you love romance books where the couple calls each other by their last names, this is it. Dean and Taylor most of the time call each other by their last names and it's so cute when one of them calls the other by their first name. The way they feel so happy when it happens!! ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶

This book is quite steamy omg they like it a little bit rough! But the sweetness and romantic aspect is so very there too and I love when you can clearly see how they go from hate to friendship to love. When they're the first person they call when you need something. When one-time sleepovers happens more than one time and you practically become a domestic couple without labeling lmao. It's so fun!!! I love romance books and Sophie Andrews never seems to disappoint me with her swoony, balanced stories.

I saw this being talked about on BlueSky as having an on page medical abortion where the hero takes care of the heroine during it and I am not sure I have ever run to check something out faster. Really liked the author's storytelling voice and the different and similar ways that past grief seemed to have manifested for the characters. Will definitely give this author another try!

This book started off great - like this was everything I wanted kind of great. Work place rivalry, constant banter, fighting for the same promotion, she is a bitch he is a asshole - the first few chapters are perfect. Then comes the knowing each other - him in a position of helping her because he can't fathom to see her wrecked, and going from enemies to frenemies - bonding on gym and runs and grief. This is, in my view, the peak of this book.

But, then it falls. The momentum crashes. Although, spoiler alert - some of you will devour this book even in those parts, the degradation kink and “crawl and beg” Girlies will have the time of their life. Unfortunately, it wasn't for me.

I do like reading degradation kink from time to time, but I am genuinely bored of this stereotype where the the FMC is this boss bitch and the MMC goes “I wonder how she will look submitting in bed” and then goes on to make her crawl and beg. I understand a lot of people enjoy this, and I don't even mind the submission in bed part as much as the “crawl and beg” part, because the latter just gives me an ick and for some reason, this writing made it seem like her crawling was a power boost to him. As if it was more about his ego.

The end feels a little rushed, when they go from “you can't have the promotion, it's mine” to giving it up because I love you in two months? Or less probably. The end 20 percent had a lot of scope for good angst and groveling and just communication and bonding, but to me it felt rushed so didn't hit enough.

Either way, I loved this book for the “What a bitch” in chapter 1 to “Call her that again and we will have a problem” in chapter 13 trope. I devoured the first half like a maniac, and I will definitely re read those parts for fun and giggles ✌️

This book is a wonderful end to the series. Even though I hate the end of a series because I'll miss my friends 😔 I loved them all so much.
Every book has not just the love story of the couple but also a deeper story within it. It may trigger some readers, so please read the TW first. And yes, some of the topics may not just trigger some readers, they may also be controversial. But I love it, it gives the books even more character 🩷 and the characters so much more authenticity. So good 🤩

Dean is really something special. It's not easy for me to summarize him. He is strong and knows what he wants. But he is also broken 😔 and I felt so sorry for him. I didn't see it in Ethan and Laney's book (his best friend and his twin sister, book #4). Because, yes, he hides his broken self from everyone.
That's why he and Taylor fit together so perfectly. They both have to deal with grief. And they both feel broken and in need to compensate for it with... Yeah, with "adult activities" 😉 Not with each other.

I loved how much they hated each other. The names they are calling each other 🤣 Especially Dean calling her "Saran's Missress in human form" 🙈 She knows it! And she loves it 🤣
It's just so perfect 😁
And still, when Taylor needs a friend, he jumps and takes the role, even though she told him she doesn't want him because she is too ashamed. And here comes a huge trigger in the story. I don't have any (except for sugarcoating animal cruelty). I don't have to think the same way or react the same way as book characters (or real people), but I can accept their decision to do what they do. And yes, I'm glad I never was in such a situation to have to make this decision.

Even though it's the last book of this series, I still have a few more books by Sophie I'll read, and I'm very excited 🤩

Kind of mixed thoughts on this one. It was engaging and an easy read PLUS in this day and age having an abortion on page is revolutionary and makes this book worth including and talking about.

I didn't love the couple once they got together and found some of the writing to be a tad repetitive.

But there is a wedding and they dance to LETS GET MARRIED which is always something I love.

One trope that I have been loving lately is rivals-to-lovers, and Tangle Ambition is an excellent rivals-to-lovers one. Added to that: office romance, with some sick/care scenes, they're lawyers, and he plays in a band as a side-gig! Excellent jabs/banter, and also some forced proximity. Recommended!

The only reason i picked this book was because i was told it's pro choice and i just had to see how it played. And i'm glad i did because the author did a really good job, for this topic is such a rarity in romance books.

Unfortunately, everything else was a cliche and bore. We have H that lost his best friend so he uses that as an excuse to spend years banging away anything that walks. H/h have known each other for two years so she has a front row seat to all this. And then we have the cliched - he has great sex and all his partners are hot af while all she gets is a stick up her ass, shitty sex and hippy men that aren't hot by H's standards.

I'm so confused on how to rate this, on one hand i'm so glad that the author had the courage to touch the topic of women's choice and bodily autonomy that we rarely see here but on the other it had every micro trope i don't actually enjoy.

Safety - Not safe. Both know and see the other sleeping with OP. H is an extreme manwhore, we see him running into atleast one ow he slept with. He's been celibate for a few months but certainly not for the lack of trying as he scrolls through the tons of ow contacts on his phone trying to find a repeat. h has a ons with om, gets pregnant and decides not to have the baby.

This is by far one of my new favorite books.
Taylor and Dean are a perfect match for each other.
Taylor Novak is a badass lawyer who will knock anyone down for getting in her way. Dean is a cinnamon roll, guitar playing, feminist. (But also a really fvcking good lawyer) When Taylor met Dean in law school, she was annoyed at his seemingly non-caring attitude and his inability to arrive on time or turn anything in until the last minute. Even though these two fought like cats thrown together in a bath, this someone how makes them each a better person and more motivated in their career. Now they’re working in the same office fighting for the same promotion. Taylor has always been the rock for her family, being there for her sister anytime she calls. Now, she’ll need someone to cover her when she needs help.

“My grandmother calls me the rock. I’ve been the steady, unmovable force in my family for so long, I’m not sure I know how to be anything else.”

“Paper covers rock”

“What”

“In rock, paper, scissors, paper covers rock. It’s not unbeatable.”

“You might be a rock, but that doesn’t mean you’re supposed to withstand everything. You’re strong—really strong—but sometimes you get beat by being covered with paper.”

“And let me guess—in this analogy, you’re the paper.”

I am positive you will be blown away by this enemies->frenemies->lovers book. Plus there is some top tier smut along the way.

“Don’t be such a jackass”
“Get on your knees and ask nicely, and maybe I won’t be. Or be a brat and see where that gets you. Back to your bed, with your p*ssy still throbbing with need. You want it? Get on your knees and crawl to me”

CRAWL TO ME- like yes please sign me up.

Hate and love. The line between them is ever so thin.

Dean and Taylor know this for a fact. In addition to competing with one another in law school, they also compete in the same law firm for the coveted partner position. Little do they know how much they really have in common. When Taylor finds herself is a difficult situation with no one to count on, Dean comes through in a big way. Turns out, the asshole really does have a heart. Predictably, Taylor and Dean fall for one another; however, the ups and downs of their love story kept me hooked til the very end.

My favorite part of this story is the realistic relationship between Taylor and Dean. While we haven’t all been in exactly the same situation, their relationship is one almost everyone can relate to and when they fall in love? Oh man. What a dreamy love story! Taylor and Dean slowly get to know the real people behind their work veneers, telling their respective stories and learning each other’s hurts - and I am here for it! Although it is obvious to the reader they will eventually end up together, that doesn’t diminish the excitement of their new relationship and how each blossoms under the attention of the other.

This book is part of a series, but can easily be read as a standalone. It is a delicious work enemies, to frenemies, to maybe not enemies, to lovers novel ❤️

Any book that features is an automatic five stars for me because it’s so rare to see this storyline in romance. I’m stunned how conservative authors are about it. But there’s also fantastic characters, brilliant banter and I am so glad the author made this a proper slow burn work rivals to friends to lovers romance. It’s the only way for this trope to work and too many authors don’t do this.

The only thing I’d liked to have seen more though was acknowledgment of the irony that the family firm started because Taylor’s grandmother couldn’t get hired after law school so she and her husband started the firm, but Taylor was taken off a job because the client didn’t want a woman. I’d liked to have seen the Novak family deal with this more. Also perhaps have Taylor and Dean working in that case they were assigned to work on would’ve been good.

This book was thoroughly enjoyable and hit the spot for me. Can we have more books like this?

Dean and Taylor are by far my favorite couple! Their banter is harsh, lobbing insults right where it hurts. There was just something so genuine in their interactions and even after they go from enemies to frenemies to something more, it never ceases. The characters do change and open up to each other with some shared grief, but at their core, they remain the same, not afraid to banter-argue with one another in a way that only two driven lawyers can.

As a slow burn romance, we really get to see the characters in depth and their relationship change in a subtle manner the course of the book. It had a love comes softly vibe - but with two people who weren’t afraid to tell each other off. All of it together was a huge draw to me, and that’s before we talk about how strong, fierce, and pro-woman Taylor is! This book is the total package because we also get some amazing spicy scenes between Dean and Taylor!

Dean works for the law firm Novak & Novak and is up for a promotion, but has fierce competition with Taylor. And equally good lawyer. They hate each other, always with a comeback to cut the other down. But do they really hate each other? And when Taylor needs someone, Dean ends up being there for her. They unintentionally spend more time together and realize they don't hate each other. In fact they might like each other. But there's still this promotion hanging between them, can whatever they have survive?

This is a enemies to lovers book and it was so good. While they were enemies, Taylor and Dean really just saw themselves in each other and couldn't handle it. Who knew they'd be the only one who would understand. Loved it. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily providing my review.

A romance novel with abortion as the central theme? Yes, please!

I loved the way that the story handled the abortion story. It was compassionate, realistic, and affirming. The book is worth reading for this alone.

It is also an intense enemies-to-lovers story that made me realize that I don't like true enemies-to-lover stories. I prefer the enemy element to be more lukewarm. Here, Taylor and Dean hate each other. They are competitive at work and cannot stand each other until Dean sees Taylor's vulnerability and decides to be there for her. That opens the door that leads to the romance.

This was one of those books that made me stay up until three in the morning to finish it and is responsible for my looking tired at work :)

the last two books in this series were far superior to the first few! this enemies to lovers was very angsty, a suuuuuper slow burn, and i enjoyed their banter. taylor was so strong and super badass and i've liked dean since laney's book. i really enjoyed that they felt so able to be vulnerable together even though they were scared. even though they were pretty quickly NOT enemies anymore once they hooked up, i liked that they still kept the same banter and called each other out on their shit. also, the way dean helped with Kennedy's situation and respected the sister's boundaries was very sweet to me.

💥🥃🎤💼😈

I am so glad I found Sophie Andrews through Twitter a few months ago, because I’ve since read her last three releases, and I have absolutely loved them all!
Dean wasn’t as golden retriever as previous hero’s, however I still loved him (even though initially I was unsure due to his stance on eggnog). Even when he and Taylor hated each other, Dean did something for her, that made me fall in love with him!
Taylor had her walls up, but once Dean broke them down, these two were so good together - and I’m usually pretty wary of love interests who are gunning for the same promotion.
Tangled Ambition certainly hits on some heavier topics, but is also an enjoyable, slow burn but steamy read.

This is my second book written by Sophie, and I'm in love!
The chemistry that she writes between her characters is simply unforgettable!
Taylor was an awesome boss bitch (and I say this with the utmost respect and envy), but she was also able to show Dean a vulnerable side that made her all the more fantastic.

And kudos to the author for choosing that "issue" to bring the couple closer together, for not shaming Taylor for her choice, and for making it seem natural, human, and nothing particularly out of the ordinary.
Truly, thank you, Sophie, for deciding to add that to your book and the way you chose to approach it!

Enemies to lovers Dean and Taylor chemistry was unmatched. When they hated each other they hated each other. But when feelings changed they changed for the better. They loved as fiercely as they hated. They stayed true to themselves and realized underneath the armor they had similarities. This book definitely had some spice and I was truly surprised. I really enjoyed reading this book and recommend as a must read.

This was such a great book! I enjoyed it from the first page until the last. Sophie has a way of describing a beautiful love story that keeps you engaged. I loved that we could witness their relationship go from hate to friends to lovers. Taylor and Dean are perfect for each other but they don’t realize it at first. Dean is a very caring person and you couldn’t do anything but fall in love with him. Taylor is a very stuff and tight person but learns along the way to loosen up a bit. A really nice read.

3.5 stars. A solid enemies to lovers office romance.

This book contains an on-page (only the second I've ever read in romance), so kudos to the author for being willing to tackle it.

It's always hard for me to suspend disbelief when the characters are lawyers and this was no exception. Dean is 29, which means he and Taylor graduated law school four years ago... and they wants to make partner (normally an 8-10 year process). I also need at least one acknowledgement from the MMC about how the legal profession is STILL male dominated in the upper ranks and is STILL harder for women to succeed in than men. And it didn't happen here.

This is a very enjoyable workplace romance between two lawyers who hate each other with passion. They have always been rivals, now they compete for the same job. When a bad thing happens in her private life he steps up and from that point on their relationship quickly changes.
The book is sweet and romantic and they go from hate to friendship to love and it’s steamy. Great read, I wholeheartedly recommend!

Dean Hargrove and Taylor Novak are coworkers who’ve been enemies since law school. While they both ended up at the same law firm, which happens to be Taylor’s family firm, they compete over everything and not in a good way.

Until they are forced to compete for the same promotion to partner by working together on a case. Add in family drama and personal drama, quick wit and sexy times and it’s a great read. With a happy ending.

Dean & Taylor

Really enjoyed the series, but this book about Taylor and Dean is especially a really great story. I would have loved to have read them getting married and having their own little sparn. They have their HEA, but i could have read so much more about these two. Read the series ending with these two. You will not be disappointed. Thanjs Sophie Andrews ♥️ great stories. 5 🌟 and 4 🔥.

Dean and Taylor work at the same law firm and are up for the same promotion. There is some harsh back and forth banter. But there feelings slowly starts to change. This is a slow burn but when the spicy scenes hit they have just the right amount of spice for the book. Great read it's worth the read.

The main characters are awful to each other, the male main character especially with the way he refers to the female main character's looks and personality. And then when he finds out she is going to get an abortion completely forces his way into her business and doesn't take no for an answer. Stopped there as it's a big giant no.
