This is about the whole series.
It gave me serious creeps and a strong sense of claustrophobia.. The way the gang keeps going deeper and deeper without any chance of turning back. Really. Claustrophobic. Don’t get me started. Also.
The body dysmorphia was intense. Like, really intense.
Too many flesh blobs and burst eyes :(
Combined with the sexualisation of literally every child, it felt disturbingly heavy at times.
Still, I really liked the different layers of the Abyss, with all the unique monsters. Tho, I think the anime captures the colours and depth better, making it easier to take in visually.
All in all, I find the story fascinating, creative, and genuinely different from anything else.

It's just as weird as usual, only this time there's more going on and things are finally moving on properly. I'm curious to see what awaits us deeper in the Abyss.

The journey to the bottom of the abyss continues!

I came across this series by chance a couple years ago and am hooked. Beautiful art, heartbreaking story, absolutely bonkers the further down you go.

It fully embraces traumatic and terrifying scenarios, answering one question only to raise a dozen more. The world building is phenomenal, the creatures are amazing, and the characters are well-rounded, terrible, and wonderful.

Though it looks like a kids book, it's for mature readers as there is violence, horrific situations, and nudity. Seriously, do not read if you're particularly sensitive to child/animal harm.

Each volume has its ups and downs. While the story occasionally deviates to side quests and side characters, it soldiers on and you can't help but stick around hoping for a satisfying resolution.

We finally made it to the final layer and it looks bleak as ever. lol

Re-read 12/17/25: I didn't remember reading this one or anything about it so I'm glad I reread this. This book really shows how this series can be really weird and then just turn dark and menacing in an instant. How the story is being told is top-class. I must find the next book immediately. I feel we've started the endgame now.

The cave-raider squads of white whistles have a darkness to their bonds...

Possibly the closest this series is ever going to come to a "cosy" volume. Of course, Tsukushi being cosy does not obviate his penchant for the grotesque. But that penchant felt tempered by the genuinely warm characterizations and interactions in these chapters. The quirky humour also helped.

The lore of the Abyss continues to unfold like a subterranean flower as Riko and co. get better acquainted with Srajo and the rest of Hail Hex. They're a motley crew of outcasts whose bodies seem testament to wounded pasts. I found myself quite endeared to them by the volume's end. Especially Srajo, with her proclamations and poses, and the bestial Nishagora. I can only hope that Tsukushi isn't gearing up to torture these new additions to his cast. It feels as though we're on the last leg of this journey. I await with bated breath whatever further mysteries the Abyss holds.

A great story and manga, or would be if not for the fact that the author is a full p*d*ph*le. The manga features some disturbing and/or gross depictions of children right in your face from time to time (which, in case anyone wonders, do not add anything to the deeper meaning of the story and come literally out of nowhere). Do not read if not ready to scroll past such imagery, and please do not buy. A censored version is available on reddit.

About: Riko and friends band together with another squad to enter the 7th layer

Review: These volumes get shorter and shorter. This cover was so inappropriate... The story was boring, the gross bits just disgusting. It's hardly a story, it's becoming more "How can I make this even longer?" Get on with it!

----

"-Ustedes.. erm... Que les pasó?
-No...

after iruburu arc i thought the concepts couldnt get any stranger.. then lo and behold twin nuggets on the volume cover ... ANYWAYS! i don't know if the final layer will reach the emotional level that iruburu did for me but i'm still very excited for what lies ahead 🙏🏻 feels like the beginning of the end

Final layers, stage is being set.

When a manga series begins reintroducing previous characters, it can be either really good or really bad. I'm hoping that the next few volumes make the series ready to reach a spectacular end.

Interesting, but also gross

Like the rest of the volumes, I want to keep reading to know what happens, but there are parts that are gory and parts that are inappropriate, in an adult sense (hence the 17+ rating). Not for kids, despite how kid-friendly the character designs are.
