At the age of eight years old, I lost two things: my parents and something that most people take for granted. It was at that moment I began to experience the world differently from everyone else. I accepted my fate, living my life to the fullest and the best way I know how. Giving up on love was something I had to do because men couldn’t cope with my condition. Then I met him and he changed everything for me. A smart, sexy, and shattered man who hid in the shadows of his own tragedy. A man who kept the better part of himself concealed away from the world. I wanted to show him that life was more than how he saw it. My name is Aubrey Callahan and I am blind.
The moment I laid eyes on her, I wanted her. She was beautiful, uncomplicated, and one night was all I needed. People referred to me as “The Iceman” because I was controlling, ruthless, and didn’t give a damn about people’s feelings. I was a user and the only person I protected was myself. Then something happened after a single night with her. The feelings and nightmares that I buried years ago began to resurface. Even though I was a billionaire who could have anything in the world, I couldn’t stop the demons that lived inside me. Aubrey couldn’t see me for who I really was and she deserved better than me. My name is Ethan Klein and I am a destroyed man.
Writing is my passion and my mission is to provide readers with romance novels that will whisk them away into another world and from the daily grind of life - one book at a time.
Maybe this books deserves more than 1 star and I’m being overly critical or I’m too much of a hothead and I got angry at some aspects of the story.
Or maybe I’m fed up with the same shit being recycled in romance novels and done in such a poor way that it insults my intelligence .. whatever.
Read and decide for yourselves.
PS: this books had MANY issues but I gotta sleep sometime tonight, so I’ll stick to the most important 2.
Abundance of spoilers ahead and also a lot of swearing and f-bombs to follow. My theory is if you can handle those in books you can handle them in a review. 😅
The first thing that I found insulting is to write an entire book about a blind girl, and then at the end instead of just giving the couple a nice happy ever after together despite her disability, the author decides someone can’t really be happy without having their sight .. hence, a miraculous surgery.
The said surgery gave our heroine her sight back after 17 years!!! I mean how fucked up is that??
Her aunt and uncle were pretty well off people who cared for her and did everything to help her, but you’re telling me they didn’t know of a possible surgery that can help? Or that no freaking doctor suggested it for 17 years?!!?
Noooo, all it took was an asshole -the hero- ( I will explain why I gave him that nickname) to make a phone call to some fancy doc who didn’t even have her medical records btw... and just like that the doc says he can help her - like dude, I didn’t expect the author to learn how to perform brain surgery for this book but for fucks sake, how can you have a doc tell someone they can have their eyesight back without even seeing their medical records!!!
Now we get to the second most annoying thing in this book. The hero! He is a piece of horse manure! He is gross! A user, a disgusting asshole!
Ughh..
But don’t worry.. the author blamed “his way of being” on his drug addicted girlfriend killing herself because he gave her an ultimatum to go to rehab.
I mean that happened 9 years ago and sure he can be sad or feel guilty or whatever but how the fuck does that explain him treating woman as disposable holes. He was awful! He disgusted me, and tbh it’s because I see no correlation between his “trauma” and his behaviour as an asswipe. People go through a lot more traumatic events than that tbh, but if they start acting like complete and utter pigs then that’s what they are. Having a past like that does not give carte blanche on doing whatever you want to whoever you want!
And for fucks sake if I read about another person enabling him or saying that “deep down he has a heart of gold” I’m gonna have a physical reaction.
I think I said it all, pretty much...
I was looking to read a few books that feature people with disabilities but obviously I got burned.
This was a disgrace in terms of representation for blind people (not necessarily how they are pictured but the problematic ending)and second it was even more disgraceful because it tried to pass off a horrible guy as some sort of tortured soul without having him take accountability at least! He went left and right, putting people down and having little regard for their lives .. but it’s ok, because he had issues ... newsflash asshole! EVERYBODY has issues!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I almost DNF due to an explicit sex scene directly at the start of the book with another woman.
The hero has a tragic past so he only has sex and doesn't kiss anyone he sleeps with. He sleeps with the heroine on the first date and he treats her just like every other woman. He continues to treat her like this each time they're intimate until she calls him out and he tells her she's just a fuck to him like all the others.
My issue was that every time they separated he never goes after her. They just happen to bump into each other out and about so I don't believe he ever would have gone after her. It just led me to believe that if he hadn't bumped into her by accident he would have been fine to never see her again. Also, when he tells her his big secret and that he still can only offer her sex she's okay with it.
I did love Aubrey's character as I love to read about people with disabilities in romance. She was sweet and independent and was fully capable of taking care of her self regardless of her blindness. Unfortunately, the fact that she allowed him to treat her so poorly just didn't work for me.
What makes matters worse was that when we get to the plot twist that separates them towards the end of the book it's the heroine that goes after him. I HATE THAT. So from start to finish the hero pushes her away and on every occasion he only has to bump into her to see her again? Then the one time where he should be going after her she's the one that goes to him? I just prefer when the hero does the chasing. It makes the heroine look like a doormat when she's the only one putting any effort into the relationship.
Oh and if the heroine is blind how did she know she was slipping into a "“brand new strapless, black and white floral print, A-line waist dress." Also, in the art gallery how would she have known he put his hand out to shake her hand if she can't see? Then a bit later in the H's POV he sticks his hand out and he realizes she can't see. A bit inconsistent. lol sorry but that threw me off a bit
Warning. Full on rant below. A long one. With lots of colorful language.
There were so many things wrong with this book I don't even know where to begin. I am completely mystified by the glowing reviews.
This book begins with a bang. Literally. Our hero is on his way to a hotel for a laughably quick quicky with a woman named Samantha. Honestly, if I were to guess their relationship from the two-page long sex scene alone, I would have assumed he was paying her by the hour (or minute?). Not because the way she had sex, but the way he did. He has a rule about no kissing and there was zero foreplay. From how it was described it lasted about two minutes and he kicked her out within five. And the cherry on top? He didn't even bother to give her an orgasm. We are off to a great start. A few pages later, Ethan thinks this little gem of a thought:
"As for me, I loved women, and I used that term lightly. I loved their bodies and the pleasure they gave me. That was about it. I could care less about their feelings, jobs, life or what they liked to do in their spare time.”
I'm half in love already.
Eventually, Ethan meets Aubrey, our blind heroine. He meets her at an art gallery and doesn't realize she's blind. A large part of this book revolves around the fact that Aubrey isn't really at much of a disadvantage from her blindness. Ethan naturally hits on her and is surprised when she flat out refuses him. She knows the kind of man he is and is smart enough to realize she just doesn't want to deal with his bullshit. For about 24 hours. Because instead of letting it go, Ethan decides that he really really needs to sleep with her. She's a challenge.
“Her voice was soft and angelic. She was beautiful and I wanted to get to know her. But only small details so I could bring her to the Plaza and fuck her senseless.”
What a charmer.
Everyone around Ethan is well acquainted with his asshole personality and is disgusted by his determination to bang Aubrey. Even Ethan's driver. But Aubrey is a big girl and can make her own bad decisions blah blah blah. So of course, Ethan and Aubrey sleep together and he doesn't call her. Blind Aubrey cooked him dinner, and he gives her the ol' wham bam thank you, ma'am. You know what, this plot summary is taking too long. My rants are making their way in. Long story short, Ethan and Aubrey run into each other again and he feels bad for his shitty behavior. But not bad enough to not do it to her again. From there we have the usual I'm an emotionless man because of past hurts and I just need a loving woman to let me walk all over her long enough for me to realize that the way I treat women is wrong and eventually I'll start to love her back. Aren't a nice guy for changing?
Issue #1) Ethan.
I'm pretty sure I know where it all went wrong with Ethan. Not just showing. Not just telling. Doing both. A huge portion of romance novels revolve around reforming rakes/douches. There is something inherently romantic about the idea of being the only one that could change said rake/douche. The issue here was the way it was written. When reading these books we all know exactly the way these men think. Of course they only want women for sex. DUH. But when asshole behavior is compounded by blatantly misogynistic bordering on cruel statements about women thrown around like they're nothing, it comes off as much worse. I knew he was an asshole to women by the way he treated Samantha. That was enough for me. I didn't need to hear him walking around spouting that he only liked what was between a woman's legs and that they were only good for a quick fuck. Thanks Dude, I got it. He basically walked around with "I hate women" tattooed on his forehead, I didn't need any more proof. The fact that his transition from ass to semi-decent human being took until about the 80% mark to actually manifest didn't help things.
Exhibit A) After threatening to fire his secretary if she let her pregnancy get in the way of her work, Ethan looked around to find her missing. He finds her in the bathroom throwing up from morning sickness.
”It seems to me that you spend more time in here than you do at your desk and now I'm seeing this as a problem. You assured me there wouldn't be a problem.” “I'm sorry sir.” She emerged from the stall, wiping her mouth with a piece of toilet paper. I stood there shaking my head and stared at the paleness of her face. “Just clean yourself up and get back to work.”
Don't worry, he eventually becomes a better person and decides to let her have time off to go see her ob-gyn. Be still my beating heart.
Issue #2) Aubrey
In the beginning of the book, I thought I'd found a new favorite contemporary romance heroine. She was polite. Well spoken. Nothing really ruffled her feathers. Until she stayed that way. Nothing bothered her. Even being treated like a doormat. Obviously, that's a problem. I had a difficult time feeling sorry for her after she repeatedly thought to herself how stupid she was being and then continued to be stupid. Simply put, Screw me once, shame on you. Screw me twice, shame on me. I don't think it was a big deal that she didn't mind Ethan sleeping with her and not calling. They'd spent maybe three hours in each other's presence. No commitments were made. I wouldn't expect him to call either. But time and time again he treats her like shit and she just keeps coming back for more. And when he finally shows her a smidgen of kindness she is all a flutter. And then, when he reverts to his former life of douchebaggery, she is hurt and surprised. Seriously, just reading my highlights on my kindle is making me angry. Angry, I tell you. Mostly because of what this book is supposed to be. This is supposed to be a super romantic book about an emotionally shut off man learning to love from a brave independent blind woman who sees the good in him. That is not what I read. I read a horrible excuse for a human being treating a strong yet fragile blind woman like shit until he eventually saw how awful he was and decided to give being a decent person a try. Then the blind woman decides she'd settle for an okay dude who happened to a billionaire. End of story.
Issue # 3) The sex
The sex in this book was just plain bad. Ethan was a terrible lover. Hell, I wouldn't call him after. I wasn't a fan of the fact that after the first time they had sex, Aubrey told Ethan he didn't have to use a condom anymore because she was on birth control. Everyone and their mother has told her how many women he sleeps with. He told her he sleeps around. Don't be stupid, Aubrey. Use a condom. Even if he didn't sleep around, use a condom.
On top of that, the writing was just awkward.
"Letting out the sound of ecstasy, my body gave in as the rush of warmth over his cock elated him.”
Not to mention Aubrey's epic introduction to what a penis looks like. Except she didn't call it a penis. Or a cock. She called it his "manhood". No Aubrey, this is not 1817 and that is not a manhood.
P.S. I've always wanted to use that gif.
Add in there a few phrases like "sweetness of excitement", and "coated my cock with sheer delight" and it adds up to a whole bottle of cringe. There are more instances of super awkward sex, but I'm not going to list them all.
Then we come to the ending. Not only did I not like the why of it, the way it was written was completely unrealistic, unbelievable, and poorly researched. It lacked research that could have easily been done on google.
I don't mean to be so harsh, I really don't. But it was just bad. All of it. And it came so highly recommended. Everyone loved it. But I don't have one nice thing to say about this book. Sure, I've read plenty of romance novels with main characters like Ethan and Aubrey, but they were usually wearing either hessian boots or corsets. A heart-wrenching beautiful romantic novel this was not. To me it was more like a story we would tell our gfs over wine about a guy we were lucky enough to escape and laugh as we said stuff like “dodged a bullet there". But instead, the heroine is actually stuck with this guy. She has my deepest sympathies.
NOPE NOPE NOPE. In case you couldn't tell, I do not recommend.
A Beautiful Sight hold true to its title. It is a quick, sweet and a beautiful story.
Sandi Lynn has been my go-to author for when I want something sweet with minimalist angst. Sandi's books follow a certain pattern. there is an asshole male lead who has a tragic past and a female lead who fits the hero's personality perfectly, and she too comes with a tragic past of her own.
Ethan Kline is a ruthless business man, who is also known as the "Iceman" in the business world. Ethan has no feeling towards anybody. he has shut himself off completely to all feelings and stays away from anything and anyone that has the potential to scar him emotionally. But what he didn't factor in his emotionally deprived world was meeting Aubrey.
He just wanted one night with her and boy was he wrong.
Aubrey is a beautiful strong woman who lives everyday to the fullest just like everyone around her. But what sets her apart from everyone around her is what makes her character truly unique. Aubrey had met with an accident at the age of eight and lost her eyesight.
Aubrey might be blind but when you read the book you see a woman who is comfortable with the way she is and is very well equipped in her condition. She can cook, clean, shop and go around places just like any normal person. She can do what any person with an eyesight can do but give her heart or hold out a smidgen of hope for a man because it always leads to disappointment for her. Those other men could not look further her blindness and ditched her the second they knew about her being visually impaired. That is until she met a certain brooding man, Ethan.
I really loved Aubrey's character. She is sweet, lovable and strong and you can't help but love her character. She carries a pain from her past that has affected her since the day she lost her sight. And sure, Ethan is a complete jerk with just one agenda in his mind, he does redeem himself, slowly and surely. You get glimpses of his goodness. He tries to fight his feelings until he can't and then you get to see a completely different side of him, which is sweet, loving and over all caring and protective.
Sandi Lynn's books are always told from a dual point of view and one that I enjoy in her style of writing. But this time I really, really enjoyed Aubrey's point of view. To read the book from the perspective of someone who is visually impaired is different. I didn't know how Ethan looked. I didn't know how Aubrey's aunt or best friends looked. I had no idea how the places Aubrey visited looked. I had to rely completely on Aubrey's thoughts and feelings and that, was certainly a different experience.
The book plays with a lot of emotions and feelings. It breaks the characters but them pieces them back together again. Yup, this book was certainly beautiful in its concept.
The story is nice, lovely n wonderful, but why make Aubrey return her sight?
Why?
Why we can't accept people are handicapped, I knew it's for the good n the book is HEA, I don't quite understand. If Ethan n Aubrey just like that, I will give it in 4, now because of the ending, I give it 3.
I remember another story share the similar lines, the man lost his sight because an accident, he was angry man but when he met the girl, he changes. It's nice even he fail to return his sight.
2.5 stars. It was a sweet story, but whole part about her regaining her sight was too unrealistic and ruined it for me. What doctor meets with a person not related to the patient AND promises a surgical cure without seeing the patient's medical records?
I started reading this book like : '' I'm sure I wont like it''. Let me tell you now: What a wonderful surprise it was... I LOVED IT.
Such a good book, I should expected it, since it's Sandi Lynn we're talking about, but... Aubrey is a beautiful character, a really strong one a lovable easygoing girl, who lost her sight really young and learned how to live with it. Most of the characters in her shoes would be victimizing themselves for the whole book ( at least in the books I've read, that's why I thought I wouldn't like), but not Aubrey.
Ethan is one of the biggest assholes I've ever read about... but theres something in him that you can't help but love it. Maybe is because you are just waiting for all of that mean facade to fade, and for him to show is true colors. Which he does, later on ;) I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did.
Meh. I was so excited for this story mainly due to the blind heroine. Unfortunately, she was kind of pathetic and came off as too desperate. Hero was...forgettable and mainly unlikeable the majority of the story. Chemistry was missing. Everything happened so fast that it was unbelievable. This story was full of fluff served with a side of cheesy and undeveloped characters. There were also proofreading and grammatical errors on top of that.
I fell in love with this author's debut, Forever Black, and was looking forward to this being another hit. Sadly, it wasn't...for me at least.
Luv!'luv'luv this book! I just read it for a half day and here I im smiling crazy 😂. Anywoo just as expected to sandi lynn im gonna love her books. First chapter I just a bit annoy to Ethan but niw I know his past I considered to like him. And to the women here or should I name Aubrey very independent women here lost her sight at a young age... welp as usual not gonna say all the story. ☺️ The ending was good so its not a bad ending
It is sadden me that I gave this one only 1 star and the first one of this year when I really hoped that I will like it and it’s my kind of reading. But I just didn’t enjoy it and have problem to connect with Aubrey, the heroine, and Ethan, the hero.
Everything in this book felt so fast, Aubrey and Ethan relationship takes turn really fast after only 10 minutes they having conversation for the first time. While I barely know them, they already talk about how they cannot forget about each other and they are the only thing that they think in every single minute.
The writing is also felt too fast to my liking. In time it felt abrupt, other time I felt like there’s no feel in it. I have to admit that I skimmed most of the inner monologue and only read the conversational dialogue. And even that way, I felt nothing.
I quite like Aubrey, though. She’s so independent at first I wonder how she can do all the things she do every day. As for Ethan, I didn’t like him at first. He’s so rude and just like a walking bomb. It’s so easy for him to snap and yell to people and he doesn’t even bother it.
And regarding of Aubrey condition, it felt too easy if not too good to be true. I don’t know much about it, but I think it won’t be that easy. Moreover she has it for a long time, no matter how advance the technology nowadays. She at least needs time to adjust. I also didn't like that she , while it's what I picked this book up in the first place. So in the end I didn’t buy Aubrey and Ethan’s story at all.
Aubrey was beautiful, strong, and lived her life just like everyone else, except that she was blind. She could do anything except let herself fall for a man because disappointment always followed when they weren't man enough to deal with her condition. That was until she met Ethan Kline. She could see past his exterior and reputation.
Ethan was a ruthless businessman who was known as "the iceman" because he had no feelings. He shut himself off to all feelings to protect himself from the hurt that destroyed him. He would use women to feel good for the moment. So when Ethan met Aubrey he thought he would be able to do the same. One night and it would be all he needed. Boy was he ever wrong.
This story is so emotional and you will not want to put the book down. Aubrey is so strong and sweet and I fell in love with her character. She is carrying a deep pain that affects her more than she realizes. Even though Ethan is a total jerk, you can see the good in him. As much as he tries to deny his feelings, they get stronger and stronger and you see an entirely different side to him.
Be ready for an emotional ride that will break your heart, but never fear, it will be put back together again. Once again as I finish one of Sandi Lynn's books, my heart is completely full. This was a beautiful five-star read for me!
I was intrigued by the synopsis on this one so I picked it up. We meet Ethan or as he is often called, the "Iceman" and he holds true to that description. He is cold, uncaring and lets no one in his inner circle that isn't already there.
Aubrey is a breath of fresh air. Although she is legally blind, she has lived her life to the fullest and does things her own way. The two seem like an unlikely pairing, but maybe they can heal each other.
It's difficult in stories that have insta-lust, I think, to keep the readers attention. Once it seems like they will have a one night stand and Ethan will treat her like all of his other conquests, I just wasn't as invested in how this would end up. I don't know that he did enough to redeem himself to her. And he kept on hurting her, even once he identified his feelings.
An ok read but not a hurry up and go buy this one type of book.
what a beautiful brilliant Story! well done Sandi Lynn!
Ethan is a arrogant sexy man who is messed up from his past! He is cold and emotionless until he meets Aubrey.
Aubrey is blind caused from an accident when she was a child, Aubrey fall's for Ethan even though she knows he us a player and treats people badly but deep down inside she knows Ethan is holding back on her because of his past.
this is a lovely story quite emotional at times, loved the banter and attraction between them both! very much recommend this book!
Bad book mostly because the characters didn't feel genuine. Not a single thing Ethan or Aubrey said or did felt human and raw... It mostly felt like characters going through the motions of a drama. Like this was acted out exactly the way it was written, people would probably call the actors robots.
SPOILER: The fact that Aubrey got her eye-sight back at the end was anti-climatic and honestly disappointing because the fact that she was blind was one of the most original and interesting things about this book. There could have been so much more done with that.
I was so looking forward to this book! I was so excited it was released earlier than expected, and it do not disappoint! It was a terrific read! Love-Love-Love It!! Thank you for another great read!!!
