She is bonded to a spirit who demands her blood. She follows a mother-in-law who resents her power. She meets a man who challenges everything she’s ever believed.
After a fatal illness takes newlywed Caitrin’s husband, she finds herself obligated by duty and oath to care for her mother-in-law, Meara, at any cost…even if it means traveling to Croìthe, where magic of any kind is outlawed. Burdened by Meara’s bitter grief and weighty demands, Caitrin struggles to keep all of her secrets hidden and make a new life in the foreign land.
However, when the charming and charitable Callen Lockhart, a wealthy lord who is at odds with the town, welcomes her to Croìthe without judging her past, Caitrin worries that his generosity will come at a cost she is unwilling to pay.
Bonded to a spirit who empowers her to create spells and curses, Caitrin must either become the powerful cairline her mother had always wanted her to be or suffer the consequences of breaking free.

"Erin Phillips’ ability to stay true to the Bible in her retellings, while also putting unique and imaginative spins on them, is masterful and unparalleled. A Bond of Briars does more than just tell the story of Ruth in a new setting; it reveals how Ruth’s story points to the redeeming love of Jesus! Though I grew up reading Ruth a hundred times, this rendition showed me that it’s more than just a sweet romance. Phillips’ talent for seeing less obvious aspects of the Bible and shining light on them is nothing short of God-given, and her use of that gift to point back to Him is evident in every book of hers I’ve read so far!" — LiteratureApproved.com
From the Author: A Bond of Briars is certainly a retelling of Ruth, but there are so many angles one could approach that story from, and while I did my research and put my own twists on it, there was one shining star that demanded to be center stage: Redemption.
I tend to think of it more as a allegorical retelling than a historical one.
At the heart, A Bond of Briars is an allegory of the Gospel, just as Boaz was a type for Christ, foreshadowing the coming Messiah, who would ransom His bride from the bondage of sin. That is what A Bond of Briars is about. Underneath the fun spooks, the pretty dresses, the swoony romance, is a picture of Christ's love.
A love that doesn't make demands. A love that is given freely. A love that sacrifices to be shown. A love that expects nothing in return. A love that doesn't need to be earned. A love that changes everything—not only the way we love others, but the way we love ourselves. A love that frees us from sin and shame. A love that never gives up, never fails, and never ends.
Love has a name; His name is Jesus.
This story is about Him, and it's about me, and it's about you.

No cairline has the power to return from the darkness. Maybe that's why Ma never married. We cairlinen already belong to someone, and cairlinen can't serve two masters.
I've been a fan of Erin Phillips for a while at this point, but "A Bond of Briars" was one of my most anticipated books of 2023, and I'm SO thrilled that it lived up to my expectations. Full of gospel messages that had me all in my feels, this book was autumnal perfection. The world and story swept me away, even though I kinda knew what was going to happen, given that it's a retelling of the Biblical account of Ruth.
I loved Caitrin from the start and I just wanted good things for her, even when she didn't believe herself worthy of them. Callen was totally swoon-worthy. The supporting cast was so rich and full and felt so real.
My notes from about the 70% mark are just u n h i n g e d I loved it so much 😂 (and by "unhinged" I just mean I was giggling and kicking my feet and gasping out loud at the plot twists lol)
Overall this absolutely lived up to my hopes for it, I already can't wait to re-read it next fall. Five stars from me!
**I received a copy of this book from the author. A positive review was not required. All opinions are my own.**

Review:
ERIN. THIS BOOK.
Okay, I gotta be profesh.
So, A Bond of Briars quite literally knocked my socks off. It was witty, funny, charming, swoony, creepy, and oh so moving. There were so many fantastic elements to this story from beginning to end, and I LOVED seeing Caitrin's character growth from darkness into light, so clearly portrayed through her cairline bondage. And Callen's heart, which resembled so much of Christ's love for us, was truly something to behold.
It was all incredibly well done and well written.
The redemption thread was also so good.
As I was reading, I found myself getting lost in the story, sucked in by the plot and twisty events. The ending was for sure CREEPY, but it was necessary and so good! (Erin, I even read this part at night!!) We both joke because I don't do horror-elements well, but for those who are sensitive like me, it wasn't something I couldn't handle.
Also, you can tell Erin designs clothes because every single description in this book was like I was in a seamstress' shop, surveying every ruffle and lace glove. Truly, her attention to detail was impeccable.
AHH, I can't wait to have this book on my shelf when it releases in October! It may even be my favorite of Erin's books she's written <3
Well done, friend! I am eager for the world to get their hands on this masterpiece!
Content: Sweet & pure romance (all the selfless love) No language Blood magic & demons/possession - don't let this part deter you (I promise it'll be okay!!) Christian themes and parallels that are SO well done
UPDATE: I just reread this beauty and I loved it even more the second time, if possible. Erin has a true gift, a rare gift, and this story holds a special place in my heart 💛
A Bond of Briars was beautifully unexpected in its themes, storyline, and plot twists. The author’s heart shines so brightly through this take on the story of Ruth and Boaz, and she manages to tell a unique story while grounding it in scripture. I don’t often read biblical retellings because, so often they either mirror the story in the Bible so closely that there’s no room for creativity (like twisting this retelling in a fantasy setting), or they’re so far-fetched that it’s almost misleading to label it a biblical retelling. I’m so thrilled that Erin Phillips writes stories like these. And gosh, she’s an amazing writer. I just love this story—what a powerful, sweet, and deep book.
“My legacy will not be one of bricks and briars, but of love earned and lived.”
(Thank you to the author for a free copy of A Bond of Briars. I was obligated to leave no review, but absolutely couldn’t finish this book without giving the author deserved praise for this masterpiece!) 🤍
Can we talk about this book real quick please and thank you? I think Erin Phillips is the queen of Biblical fantasy retellings. A Bond of Briars is so lovely, and I’m here to tell you just exactly why.
THE WORLD—somehow Phillips made a gorgeous, Scottish? inspired world that has everything from apple orchards to rundown cottages to sewing and dressmaking to forests and brambles and cliffs overlooking the ocean. Everything together creates the perfect fantasy world for a Ruth retelling.
THE BIBLICAL INSPIRATION—I feel like I learned more about Ruth while reading this. As a child, you’re told the happy little story of a kind MIL who wants her widowed DIL to marry a good man. Is that how it really happened? So many good nuggets to chew on with this retelling, and I now have a deep incentive to go read a study on Ruth.
THE MESSAGE—what does unconditional love look like to someone who’s been used and abused their entire life? While part of Callen and Caitrin’s romance I found to be unbelievable, I begin to wonder if it’s just because Caitrin has such a low view of herself. She believes she is unlovable, so of course she doesn’t understand how Callen falls in love with her. And how could we—the readers—understand while in her head?
Overall: a very sweet story laced with mystery and curses and a romance bled directly from the pages of Scripture. I really enjoyed this book.
Fantasy retelling of Ruth, with a little bit of a different biblical character mixed in. I absolutely loved this! Perfect story of how light overcomes darkness.
I cannot get this story out of my mind! 🥹 A Bond of Briars has been one of my most highly anticipated reads of 2023, and it delivered above & beyond my expectations!
Erin’s style is beautiful. The world building is unique without being overtaxing or overly complicated, and all the Scottish & Gaelic elements made my heart so happy.
Yet beyond all the stunning prose, the gripping storyline, and the spooky cottage-core vibes, the heart of the story hits so hard in such an impactful way. Love—true love—isn’t bought or bargained for. It doesn’t have strings or favours attached. It’s a gift. And there is freedom from the bondage and lies our hearts are bonded to. While this is a retelling of Ruth, yes, it is also a story tightly woven with the love of Jesus.
As for the characters, you can’t help loving them (or hating as the case may be, haha)! Caitrin was so relatable. She wasn’t perfect and made plenty of mistakes yet still tried her best and grew because of them. I adored the seamstress details as they added such a layer of dimension to her tale. And I *must* mention Callen. 😭😍 In a time when fiction (and the YA genre in particular) glorify the morally grey bad boy antihero, Callen Lockhart is one of the good ones. Sacrificial, caring, thoughtful, generous, protective, and yet a sweetheart. Definitely one of the good ones. 🥺
An absolutely stunning tale on every level & I already look forward to rereading it! 😍💛
*I received an ARC copy of this book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
This is a Biblical retelling of Ruth, and I think the author did a wonderful job while also adding other aspects to the story.
The characters!! Caitrin and Callen have my heart. Callen showed Caitrin what love truly is - it’s not bought or bargained for. It’s a gift. I love how it showed Caitrin growing over the course of the book and learning how to love and let herself be loved. Meara was also so complex - she was grieving and mad at Caitrin but deep down she realized she also loved her as her own daughter.
Also, the twist?!?! I didn’t expect that reveal!! The last third of the book was so hard to put down.
I will definitely be reading more of this author. I loved this story of love and redemption. I loved the note at the end that Jesus gave us the ultimate gift of love, and that He will always be our redeemer. ❤️

“I’d save you a thousand times from a thousand evils and I would never tire of rescuing you.”
The picture and allegory of the gospel in A Bond of Briars is powerful. It will touch not only your heart, but your soul!
Yes there’s the pretty dresses and fabrics, a swoony meet cute with sweet romance and entertaining banter, creepy crawlies and curses, but there lies a deep truth of the love and light that’s found in our Savior, our Redeemer written in these pages.
This book is perfect for those who love a little bit of spooky vibes in their story, with truth interwoven into the fabric, with an intriguing protagonist who has secrets and you can’t help but love follow her throughout the story, and a setting that takes you to another land with colorful characters in tow.
Erin writes annoying characters annoyingly well if you know what I mean 😆 Between her other fantasy biblical retelling ACOC and this one ABOB, I always have a lot of feelings while reading her books! The villains are so evil! 😆 But the main feelings I get from Erin’s books are inspiration, love, excitement and empathy.
“No town is kind to a stranger with a sordid past. It takes a special kind of humility that not every person has necessarily learned to welcome someone who challenges you. To be patient, listen to their story, and offer compassion instead of condemnation.”
I want to see more books like this in our communities, on our shelves. (Totally requested for purchase at my library, you should do the same!)
A Bond of Briars is the perfect blend of allegory and fantasy.
And if you love YA dark fantasy with cottage-core vibes and allegory that shines a light in darkness, preorder this one. And more importantly, read it! You won’t regret it. 💛
I know what book I’m recommending to all my friends who love faith and fantasy!
I read an early version as a beta reader and also given an advanced copy by the author, all thoughts are expressed by me.
P.S. I don’t think I ever read a third act that made me want to keep rereading because it was that epic!
I’m CRYING as I finish this book. Yes, it took me forever to finish, because I’m not into e-books. But Erin was so amazing to give me an eARC and let me be part of her Street team for this book! Everything about this book was wonderful. Each of Erin’s works truly encompasses her brand of “dark stories filled with hope”. Even when the story seems truly hopeless, there is always a bright light at the end of the tunnel.
These stories were written for girls like me. Girls who struggle and who doubt and who lose their way. Girls who don’t know who they are or where they need to be. Girls who wonder if they hear God or are only listening to themselves and the world. Me and girls like me can find a second home in these stories.
The writing in this book was top notch. Her writing is so eloquent and her plots NEVER disappoint! The plot twists are always unexpected and amazing! Her characters are so well-developed that they feel like long-lost friends that you don’t want to let go of. I loved getting to go on Caitrin’s journey with her. To experience her loss and her pain and her bondage. To walk with her into her redemption and her freedom. I’m being so dramatic and wordy with this review but I don’t care because Erin and her book deserve every over-dramatic word I have to give.
When the end of the book neared, I cried…a lot. Redemption stories get me every time, and Caitrin’s was especially powerful. When she finally realized that what she had thought was her whole life and not a bad thing was really keeping her in bondage, it was so eye-opening and powerful. She grew, and she learned how to love. She learned how to let herself be loved.
This story truly changed my life. It sounds over dramatic, but it’s 100% true. I’ll be devouring this story again when the hard copies come out in October.
“My legacy will not be one of bricks and briars, but of love learned and lived.”
What I wouldn’t give to be able to experience this book for the first time again.
I loved this book! It is a dark fantasy spin on the biblical book of Ruth and definitely draws on the darker realities of a pagan culture, an embittered widow, and a redeemer who can love and make all things new. I was immediately drawn in as the author does an excellent job of world building - the glossary at the front is VERY helpful! The story was harsh, but the ending was beautifully redemptive and oh-so-satisfying! I’d highly recommend this book - and all others by Erin Phillips.
-ARC copy-I received a dARC from the author - this review is honest and voluntary.
SO. MANY. THOUGHTS. This book was so good. I thought I absolutely loved A Crown of Chains, but this book. ABOUT THE ACTUAL BOOK ITSELF: The chapter divisions are a little strange the stopping in the middle of conversations to start a new chapter is odd, good for not wanting to put the book down but impractical for life in general and wanting to read the book (odd stopping points) but doesn't affect the story or plot just personal preference QUICK STARTING BEGINNING: the story jumps right in not letting the reader become bored within the first chapters - great beginning hook BIG NEW WORDS: this book is def a fantasy book - the new words and phrases thrown into the book make this world seem like a whole different world and not just a different place on earth
(i will post my thoughts on the actual plot of the story on its release date October 24)
Gripping. Thats the first word that comes to mind after finishing this book. A true testiment on what unconditional love, sacrificial love looks like. Erin brought the story if ruth to life in a freshe exciting way. I loved the cottagecore feel to it. I love how she doesn't hide how bitter meara is, or where cait comes from and what she comes from originally. We have to see the ugly before we can see the beauty. Much like our own redemption stories. This may be a fantasy take on ruth but also reality of life. What are our bonds we claim as a false freedom, as false power? The characters are so real and the setting that I can still see them in my heart. Each page leaves you wanting more and pointing to the one who gives us true freedom and power. I will be recommending this book to many.
Erin Phillips’ ability to stay true to the Bible in her retellings, while also putting unique and imaginative spins on them, is masterful and unparalleled. A Bond of Briars does more than just tell the story of Ruth in a new setting; it reveals how Ruth’s story points to the redeeming love of Jesus! Though I grew up reading Ruth a hundred times, this rendition showed me that it’s more than just a sweet romance. Phillips’ talent for seeing less obvious aspects of the Bible and shining light on them is nothing short of God-given, and her use of that gift to point back to Him is evident in every book of hers I’ve read so far!
The Good: A Bond of Briars is a lovely cottagecore dark fantasy retelling of the Biblical story of Ruth, complete with blood magic, a seamstress protagonist, and the timeless theme of redemption with apparent inspirations from the British Isles' countryside and influences from Scottish Gaidhlig. It's the perfect spooky read for fall, but could be read at any other time of year, especially in spring! I especially loved the details given regarding the setting, costumes, and character appearances which made it feel like I was truly a part of the story. I also want to commend Erin for the usage of blood magic and at the end, condoning it as something evil, which I was very much unsure about during the book. If you have qualms about picking this one up because of that, rest assured.
The Bad: Nothing really to say here, just a few personal things I struggled to understand while reading. I am marking it as a spoiler, though it's not really a spoiler, for the sake of any reader reading this review prior to starting the book and who don't want anything spoiled story-wise. The only other thing I struggled with was understanding what drew Callen to love Caitrin so deeply. It could be that I missed the details during my read since I was using an ebook and reading during the evenings when tired, but I felt like there wasn't enough to really justify it on his end? Could also be that the story was told from Caitrin's POV so we're limited to what Callen says, and he doesn't really speak of it at all. It was just for a redemption story, I felt like there could have been more justification for the redemption itself than what was given.
What the Reader Thought: Having absolutely adored A Crown of Chains, I was greatly looking forward to this one, and was absolutely ecstatic when I was able to get a dARC! While I think A Crown of Chains is my favorite of the two, I did very much enjoy this one. Erin Phillips is a master of setting and world-building, and both the books I've read from her are absolute page-turners. I loved especially getting to see Rahab's story woven in here, and the way she handled the retelling aspects from the Biblical narrative was once again very intriguing and thought-out! (Also...I love how Erin cared about the little details, even down to the town, Saorsa, meaning redemption!) What really touched me the most, though, aside from the redemption theme (which I'm 100% a sucker for), was the concept that while we cannot earn love, that doesn't mean we aren't loved anyway, which is something I've struggled with in terms of self-worth, and was very touched by the way Erin spoke about it in this book. It was a beautiful thing to read about, no less in light of the story which inspired it. While I think there could have been a bit more development regarding the redemption reasoning aspect, I really liked this book, and look forward to getting my annotated copy!
If you want a clean but spooky read this autumn with a dark cottagecore aesthetic and a redemption theme, be sure to preorder!
Dark Fantasy. Biblical Retelling. Ruth. Boaz. Dark Magic. Love. Sacrifice. True Redemption.
When I first began my bookstagram this spring, Erin Phillips was one of the first authors I followed. Her work often feels like an echo of my own heart and like looking into my mind. Always putting Christ at the center, her honest conviction to bring truth and relatability in her works is so inspiring and refreshing. I purchased an annotated hardcopy and it's been such a blessing to read alongside her scripture notes and inspiration. It makes Caitrin and Callen come alive in such a beautiful light that only Christ can shine through their struggles.
A Bond of Briars is an enthralling story that honors the biblical tale of Ruth and Boaz that is just total perfection. A completely unique retelling to a story that has been so close to my heart since childhood.
Erin has crafted an utterly moving world with delectable Austenesqe romantic slow burn, dreamy environments, and the use of dark magic of being bonded to a spirit that uses blood bartering to solidify deals. Our journey follows Caitrin navigating finding light in the darkness spoken over her life and the spirits beckoning her to give in, to be hated by society and outcast as a young window. To finding love in a new land among a people who hate her kind.
Caitrin is beautifully relatable for anyone who struggles recieving not just love but genuine goodness from others. The character development is so captivating in how we all struggle with temptation and how through faith we all can be encouraged to move towards light rather than give into that all to alluring darkness we all know so well. As much as I love the romance between Caitrin and Callen it is the bond Caitrin shares with her mother in law that such speaks to my heart. It is one of honor, submission and selflessness. I just loved every page and cannot say enough.
Erin weaves such an enchanting tale that always point back to divine redemption and the love and forgiveness Christ gave. Erin's has stated she writes for the broken to share the redeeming love of Christ. She writes about the dark and the messy parts of life and the redemption found in such subtle ways. Whether you are a believer or not, I truly believe this book will bless anyone who reads it.
I loved reading A Bond of Briars, and it now holds a special place in my heart. One of my favorite things about Erin Phillips retellings is that even though I’m reading something fantasy, I always end up getting a spiritual lesson or reminder in it as well. In a Bond of Briars, my reminder was Redeeming Love. I felt a connection to Caitrin through the fact that I know what it’s like to feel bonded - before accepting Christ I was bonded to my sin. If you like fantasy, spooky cottage core vibes with romance, magic, mysterious curses, sacrificial love and redemption, this book is for you. It is perfect for fans of House of Salt and Sorrow and Sing Me Forgotten. All in all, this book is a ✨TOP SHELF✨ book for me.
I didn’t really know what to expect with this book. Transparently, it’s my first Erin book and I don’t normally make it a habit to apply to be an ARC reader for an author I haven’t read before, unless it’s a debut author. But I was pleasantly surprised!
I don’t normally like retellings a whole lot, and biblical retellings make me a little leary, BUT this book was really good. I would say that it’s more allegorical and inspired by Ruth rather than an actual retelling, but I, also, trust the author because she knows what she’s talking about. There were many scenes where Christ’s love was very evident. There was a dramatic push and pull of sin vs salvation. The way that Callen pursued Caitrin, despite her failings, how he wanted to save her from her bond, is such a loving picture of how husbands are to pursue their wives.
This was a wonderful dark fantasy without the yucky stuff. I absolutely recommend it!!
Ps – this book was gifted to me by the author, but this review is entirely honest and my own opinion.
I would give the book 2.5/5 stars. The book was a fantasy retelling of the book of Ruth. I really liked crown of chains so this book was disappointing to me. The book was very very dark to me as well. The main character is bonded to a spirit and that is one of the main parts of the book. I felt like a character bonded to a demon like spirit was not the best for a biblical retelling. The dark parts were hard to read and gave me the ick a lot. The character that was the mother in law, supposed to portray Naomi, she was very grumpy and hateful and did not represent Naomi well to me. I did enjoy the character of callen and i enjoyed the love story, as well as the ending. But overall the darkness of the book I couldn’t get past it.
the ending was crazy & great connection to redemption and Jesus' sacrifice. I found the magic to be a little more than I prefer to read (not that I've read a lot lol) but it felt like the darkness was more overpowering than I expected from this sort of retelling. I did connect a lot with the love story & made me thankful for my husband and his sacrifices to me. finding love like this is important ❤️ overall, good and I know many will like this story more than I did!
When I first started this book, based on the cover and the first few chapters I was ready to call it your basic clean romance. I even ranted a little bit about it to my husband.
But there was something intriguing about the spiritual warfare aspect that kept me reading. And I am SO glad I did.
About halfway through, I became riveted and couldn’t put it down. Erin addresses spiritual warfare in a way I’ve never seen done before that is very refreshing. This book changed me. It deepened my appreciation for God’s redeeming love. And it definitely shook me out of the stupor that being forced to skip spicy scenes usually brings; the clean romance, though at times cliche, left me with a good taste in my mouth. It was genuine and earned.
All in all, I am left with massive respect for this author and I will read anything and everything she writes.

"Fear is a tool, if wielded properly, Ma had once said. But when people scurry from me, my heart pinches. I don't have the talent for wielding fear as Ma does, so along with the pain of rejection, I shrink from the shame of weakness."
~ Erin Phillips, A Bond of Briars
A powerful tale about the fears and weaknesses we hide behind, A Bond of Briars tells the story of a young woman escaping the lies she was taught about the nature of power and strength. With an imaginative, cottagecore inspired world based on Scottish culture, Erin Phillips breathes fresh life into a tale we all know and love, the story of Ruth from the Old Testament. Caitrin Raeburn travels to a foreign land, the home of her grieving mother-in-law. There, Caitrin is faced with a choice: can she leave the dark practices of her people behind to accept the love and redemption of her mother-in-law's people and their God? Or will she cling to the fears that tell her she is nothing without the dark powers that bind her?
At its surface, A Bond of Briars is a fast paced, exciting YA fantasy with sharp, clean prose, compelling characters, and a thrillingly romantic plot. I rooted for Caitrin the whole way as she fought hard to earn love and acceptance from her mother-in-law and the townspeople, who see her as not only an outsider, but irrevocably tainted by the profane practices of her people. I swooned at Caitrin's love story, the slowest of slow burns between Caitrin and the young lord of the manor, Callen. But most of all, I was moved by the rich allegorical foreshadowing that pointed the story of Caitrin's redemption from the bonds of sin toward the ultimate tale of salvation in Christ. A Bond of Briars is not just an enjoyable fantasy read; it is imbued with the author's careful study and knowledge of Scripture, and her faith in what God promises His people there. I came away from this book with a deeper love for my Savior, and a newfound interest to study not just the book of Ruth, but all of Scripture, more fully.
I'm so grateful I was able to receive and read a free advanced reader copy of this book early (while eagerly awaiting my hardcover copy on release date!) and I am leaving my honest thoughts and opinions voluntarily.
Have you believed something for so long only to find it has all been a lie?
I just finished reading this book. I loved A Crown of Chains (another fantasy retelling of the story of Esther. You should check it out!), so when I saw that Erin will be writing a story about Ruth, it made me curious as to how she will deliver it. God used the book of Ruth and it played a great role on my love story with my husband. So I am excited to read an advance copy of it. And what she wrote is so beautiful. I already told Erin that this review will be difficult for me to write because I don't want to spoil all the good things you will read in this book. 😭😍 The only struggle I had was pronouncing some things while reading. But that does not stop me from loving every character in this book. From the two very energetic grannys, to Meara, Brodie, the dreamy (I-will-give-my-life-for-you-Caitrin) Callen, and of course, (no-they-must-need-something-in-return) Caitrin. 😅💖
The shift from darkness to light while reading and the reminder of the unconditional love of God in this book is so well done. I can feel the sincerity in every page.
So happy to have pre-ordered my own copy and can't wait to put it on my shelf. This year has been a great reading year so far. Lots of awesome stories!
As a fairly new reader of the fantasy genre, I am blown away with this book. At first, I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace (which in the end, I appreciated, as it got right into the action). I have read the book of Ruth and have always enjoyed the love story. Erin has taken this short book of the Bible and illuminated it. There were parts in the beginning, where I was finding myself wondering: “how does this connect?” But as time went on, and the connections became more apparent, it made me want to open my Bible and explore the story even more. I won’t share spoilers, but I will say: this book has helped me to understand and view the deep, unconditional love of my redeemer, Jesus Christ, in a whole new light. I am thankful that Erin explicitly shares her faith and points back to the one who loved us first, so much that he gave his life to save us. If you are looking for a novel that takes all the world building and magic of the fantasy genre, leaves you breathlessly in awe of Jesus’ gift and seeking your Bible, give one a try when it comes out!
I personally thought it was too dark of a fantasy to be a retelling of Ruth. The book made some characters such as Meara (who is Naomi in the book of Ruth), the mother in law of Caitrin (Ruth), very rude and belittling of Caitrin and not really a good representation of Naomi who is caring and loving of Ruth and very protective of her. I love the story of Ruth and this book made me extremely uncomfortable. I found this book on instagram and was under the impression that it wasn’t going to be so dark and it was definitely way too dark, at least for my liking. To anyone who enjoys dark fantasy this book is probably more for you!
Vivid, dark, and unmistakably drawn from the book of Ruth, A Bond of Briars is a daring biblical retelling that weighs prejudice, sin, freedom, and love against the commonly-warped ideas of those things. (Also, Erin Phillips is such a Christlike, lovely, bright, kind presence in the publishing world!) A Bond of Briars could definitely be for you if you’re looking for a fantastical, cottagecore, Gaelic-flavored tale that incorporates motifs of wildflowers and dressmaking and very needed themes.
🥀 content: violence and dark magic. Mentions of someone’s past prostitution. Muireall sends Caitrin to try to seduce Callen. Kissing. 🥀

The book of Ruth is filled with romance, grief, sorrow, and new beginnings and Phillips conveyed all of that in her retelling of the story of Ruth.
Caitrin is a cairline, a woman bonded to a spirit by blood magic. She uses this magic to help people, but at the end of the day the spirit still has much control of her. When Caitrin follows her mother in law Maera, to Maera's homeland after Caitrin's husband, Maera's son dies, Caitrin is an outsider because magic is banned in her new home. Phillips' usage of magic as a way to link Ruth being a Moabite and not being welcomed in Jewish circles was a really clever plot design!
As a reader, you truly felt Naomi's (Meara in this book) bitterness and anger after her families death and how much that affected her. The Bible alludes to that bitterness for sure, but it was striking to see it written out in a story form.
Caitrin meets Callen Lockhart who is kind towards outsiders because his mother used to be one as well. Through the story we see their care for each other grow and Callen encourages Caitrin to make a hard decision.
Overall, this was a beautiful retelling of the book of Ruth and has helped me think more deeply about the book! It is truly an incredible story of redemption and makes me thankful that God redeemed me from my sins!
Major thank you to the author for providing me with a eARC in exchange for an honest review!
