Detective Jack is called out to a body on the South Bank. The victim’s hands and feet are bound, her skin badly bruised, her lips crudely sewn shut.
Inside the dead woman’s mouth is the severed head of a rat.
This is the second body in two days.
The following night, a third body is discovered in a derelict brewery. The same bruising, the mouth sewn shut, a rat’s head inside. This time it’s a young man — and he’s been dead at least a week.
With no witnesses and no clues to who the victims are, Jack’s investigation is going nowhere.
Then he gets a call from journalist Jonathan Spearing. There’s no love lost between the two men — but now Jonathan needs Jack’s help.
Katie Spearing is missing. She’s been gone for two days. And Jonathan just received a text: We have your wife.
Jack uncovers a connection between Katie Spearing and the three broken bodies. Now he’s in a desperate race against time.
DI Jack MacIntosh is called out to the body of a young woman found dead on the South Bank - her hands and feet are bound together, and she’s badly bruised, but what really shocks the investigation team is the fact that her mouth has been sewn shut, and the head of a dead rat is discovered on removing the thread.
A second body is discovered the next day, followed by a third discovered in a derelict brewery. All with the same MO.
At the same time, a local newspaper reporter receives a ransom demand after returning home to find his wife missing. Does this have anything to do with the recently discovered bodies? Well, DI MacIntosh and his team are determined to find out.
Though these murders did make me feel a little squeamish, the storyline itself was riveting, with lots of twists and turns, aided by excellent use of smoke and mirrors. Recommended.

This story made me feel quite squeamish reading about the rat's heads being sewn into the victim's mouths. The characters are well-developed, the pace is steady, there are plenty of twists in this well-written book. I kept thinking I knew where this story was going, but I was wrong. I could not put this book down.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #JoffeBooks and the author #MichelleKidd for my ARC of #ThreeBrokenBodies in exchange for an honest review.
Book 5 in the DI Jack Macintosh series. A good addition to the series. It did get a little confusing 🫤 in places as there were so many storylines which all came together at the end so you had to keep your wits about you !!
Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe for the arc of this book in exchange for an honest review
Full disclosure, I believe that this is a case of the writing style just not working for me. And while I struggled to finish this one for reasons I will go into in a moment, I do firmly believe that other people will enjoy this one much more than I did.
To start with the positives, I found the plot to be interesting. The author definitely knows what they are doing when it comes to weaving together a cohesive story even when it seems like none of the elements will cross-over. The characters, for the most part, seemed well thought out (although one or two of them, to me at least, felt like they fit into the stereotypical mold of good guy vs bad guy).
Here is where I lost interest.
To begin with every chapter or "location change" was met the same way. Time: x.xx am/pm (depending) Date: Day of the week, monthly date Location: any one of the many locations
To take an example straight from the book it looked like this:
Time: 5.15 pm Date: Saturday 20 August 2014 Location: Metropolitan Police HQ, London
This immediately pulled me out of the story. Especially because that grouping of items immediately meant that there was not only about to be a location change, but a change in character(s) / plot-lines as well. I feel like this story would have done better had the chapters been longer and focused on what was happening in that specific location instead of jumping around. For example whilst at the Police HQ, they could have talked about the two cases and how where each team was at in their own investigations. I didn't feel like we needed to jump from something happening at the police station, to something happening with one of the many criminals who also featured in this novel.
The second issue I had with this one is also admittedly a pet peeve of mine. You do NOT need to end every damn chapter on a cliffhanger. Now and again to keep things moving I can understand, but this story had it happening at the end of literally every chapter. It was though the author didn't trust their writing to be strong enough on its own to carry the story forward without relying on that tactic. Which really was a shame as I have said before, the author's writing style IS strong.
It's just all these little things that I feel will make it unappealing for readers like me, while still attracting a following all its own of other readers.
DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.
Three broken bodies is the 5th book in the DI Jack MacIntosh series, however it could be read as a stand alone thriller (which is how I’ve just read it) and I found it easy enough to follow 🙂
3 bodies are found on 3 different nights, however they are all found in the same condition, their hands and feet are bound, there’s a dead rat stuffed in their mouths and their lips have been sewn together. DI MacIntosh and his team are put on the case, however with no witnesses or leads it’s clear from the off that this isn’t going to be the easiest of cases to work on.
As the book progresses there is a kidnapping thrown into the ring. Jack gets a call from a local journalist whose wife has just been abducted. Jonathan Spearing (the journalist) knows his wife is being held to ransom. He has been told not to contact the police of his wife Katerina will be killed.
Jonathan pays the kidnappers £10,000 but when they then up it to £100,000 Jonathan has no choice but to go to the police and seeks out Jacks help.
I really enjoyed 3 broken bodies, at times I found my brain a bit frazzled as there was so much going on I found it hard to keep on track, as the book progressed I love the way the 2 different cases became connected and I thought the story line worked really well.
I was hooked right from the start of this book there was plenty going to to keep the reader interested from start to finish, and at some point in the future I will be going back to read some of the other books in this series.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an open and honest review.
DI Jack MacIntosh has a grisly case. Bodies are being discovered with their lips sewn together, but during the post mortem investigation the pathologist finds a severed rat's head was placed inside the mouth before death. Meanwhile a journalist's wife has been kidnapped and a ransom is demanded... Three Broken Bodies is the fifth book in the revised and redeveloped DI MacIntosh series. There are follow on aspects to Jack's personal life and the murder case that relates to his mother so there are spoilers. Jack's latest case is very unpleasant. I liked how the natural revulsion of the police characters is depicted, showing that exposure to such atrocities can still affect them emotionally. There is a gang element to the plot and the violence is as graphic as you might expect. The book is written in the third person throughout to show the different layers to the plot. This allows us to see a variety of perspectives and feel the fear of the characters in danger. We witness the police investigation, gang members, potential victims, prison residents and a panicked husband of a kidnapped woman. There are lots of threads of plot which are woven together cleverly by the author. Jack is a complex character and doesn't always follow the rules. He works to his own code and keeps secrets from his friends and colleagues. His past plays a significant role in a number of the plot elements, for example his antagonistic relationship with the missing woman's journalist husband and the murder of his mother. Three Broken Bodies is a tense and enjoyable detective thriller with a fab lead character.
This is a very good police procedural that really hit the mark with me. I've read the first book in this series, then this one.
Three Broken Bodies can probably be read on its own although there are references to previous events so I'd suggest you read the series in the correct order.
Michelle Kidd has come up with a great book here - I really like the main character Jack Macintosh and his team. They investigate a particularly gruesome murder and the case soon escalates, whilst another team investigates a kidnapping - are these cases linked? The authors writing style is really good, the story grabbed my attention and interest very quickly and held it all the way through to the last page. I like the short, punchy chapters that complemented the story and had me turning the pages wanting to know more. There are a lot of characters and it took time for them to fall into place in my mind. This isn't a gripe though, and if I'd read the previous books I would have been more familiar with some of them. The story pacing is perfect in my opinion, and the plot line well very well thought out, and certainly kept me guessing.
There isn't anything I didn't like about this book, I'd definitely recommend this author and series if you like crime, police procedurals. I'll be reading the books I've missed when I can so I can be up to date and ready for the next book.
I started this earlier today, and seem to have accidentally finished it, despite it being nearly 1am. I already know when I go into a Michelle Kidd book that it's going to be a cracking read. I love this series and it felt nice to catch up with the characters after what feels like a really long time. The case is quite horrific. A body turns up with its mouth crudely sewn shut. When they do the postmortem they discover a dead rat was shoved in its mouth first. Then the local journalists wife goes missing and there are two cases running. A new cop comes in and is given the kidnapping, but is she all that she seems. This is a very intense, high tempo read, lots of characters, rival gangs, and a third storyline from inside Belmarsh prison. I quite liked Jason Alcock and hoped he was as he seemed. The ending is brilliant, I was on edge and couldn't wait to see how it turned out. A couple of brilliant little details that threw me completely. There are mentions to previous cases and characters, but it really didn't matter. It can be read perfectly as a standalone. Can't wait for the next installment from this wonderful writer.
Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for the eARC
Jack MacIntosh is called out to the body of a young woman on the river bank. Found naked, her hands and feet bound, lips sewn shut but when opened, the head of a rat stuffed in her mouth. Trouble is there's been more than one body found like this over the past weeks. What's going on? Is one of the local gangs cleaning house? How does it relate to the kidnapping of the wife of a local journalist, or does it?
There's plenty of twists and turns, as well as an overreaching plot carrying into the next book, to interest the reader. It wasn't difficult to the follow the twists and the storyline was very engaging. This is number 5 in the Jack MacIntosh series. They're a good solid police procedural and I'll definitely be reading the next one.
DI Jack MacIntosh London. The South Bank and a second body is recovered, it's the perfect dump site another one in the white tent with the crime scene blue and white tape up. The pathologist states to Jack all the hallmarks are there, another female with empty eyes staring up covered in bruises, with the mouths of both girls sewn shut its sickening to see. Two then become three dark twisted murders, Three Broken Bodies, with no ID, this is one big investigation, find out who are these poor girls and to find the murderer before they strike again. Oh Boy I totally was gripped into this book getting to know all the characters, with such easy laid back chapters to follow to almighty twists right through. I loved it.
Although this is part of a series, I feel there is enough referral for it to be read as a standalone. It's a very gripping page turner of a read with a well written storyline and plot with strong characters. A bit of a cold shiver at the thought of the rat and mouths sowen up. There is plenty of action in crime and investigation, which keeps you wondering and thinking as to who the guilty party is. There are also many twists and turns and some revelations. It's a great book, and I wonder what book 6 will reveal. My thanks to Joffe books for the advanced copy. This is my honest and unbiased review.
A woman is found, covered in bruises and with her lips sewn shut, her mouth containing a dead rat. This isn’t the first such body that Jack McIntosh has been called out to and before long there is another. The victims are all without identification and nobody recognises them. A journalist also receives a ransom demand for his wife and initially he tries to deal with this alone without knowing who has kidnapped his wife or why.
I found this book took a long time to get into. I think I struggled with the constant subheadings telling me when and where the next section took place. It was a good read on the whole and did pick up pace as it went on.
This was a very good read. The discovery of several bodies over a few weeks with their mouths sewn shut and the body of a dead rat in their mouths is the basis for Jack's investigation. At the same time, the wife of a journalist is abducted.
The storylines here were totally riveting. How could a dead body with a dead rat sewn into their mouth not get you hooked? There's some gangland activity going on with a lot of twists and i'm still not sure where things are heading with one of the storylines so I'm guaranteed to read the next when it comes out.
My 6P review: Premise, Plot, People, Place, Prose/Pace, Praise
When a victim’s hands and feet are bound, their lips are sewn shut and inside the mouth is a severed head of a rat, Detective Jack Mcintosh is set for more sleepless nights. He also receives a call from journalist Johnathan Spearing asking for his help.
The plot was excellent. I loved reading about just how Jack and his team were going to solve this one.
I love how Jack is becoming deeper and deeper into the proverbial poo. How is he going to get himself out of it.
The scenes were described in such a way that it was easy to visualise.
Easy to read and very satisfying series however I thought this book was more a lead-in to the next in the series with the plot feeling like a side story. It will not deter me in reading the next one.
This is the first Michelle Kidd book that I’ve read. She’s very graphic & rather gruesome in her detailing of the crimes. There’s a lot of characters & events to piece together. Short punchy chapters, further broken down by snippets of time & place activity. Intriguing! I received an Advanced Reader Copy from NetGalley & Joffe books. I am writing an honest voluntary review
I struggled with the log book style this was written in, jumping from one thread to another, meaning I had trouble knowing where the storyline was. That aside there is plenty going on with two main storylines. I have read one of the Jack Macintosh books before and although this one was number five it didn’t matter I had missed a few.
Jack and his Team are awesome! Hope none get written off? This book had a good storyline, character descriptions and the circumstances as to how they got to be who they were; yes even the bad guys. I hope the prison librarian gets a break. He deserves it. Ready for another MacIntosh novel.
Well that’s book 5 of this series done and dusted. What did I think of it? We have murder kidnapping ( bent police?) and Jack MacIntosh so what I thought was Brilliant so if you need a Brilliant book to read get this series as for me not long before book 6 is out so happy days
For some reason, I couldn’t get on with this book at all, and unusually for me, I didn’t finish it. Probably because of the time as well, but it just didn’t hold me. My thanks to the author and Joffe publishers for the ARC.
I received an ARC of this book via Joffe Books in return for an honest review.
Another in the Jack Mackintosh series and it doesn’t disappoint. It’s got everything. Kidnapping extortion, people trafficking, murder. Highly recommend, it’s a cracking read.
Good police thriller, suspenseful,, action packed story. I thought it was worth reading. Has a gripping plot and good characters, especially Jack. The suspense will keep you turning pages. Given arc by Net Galley and Joffe for my voluntary review
This again is an absolutely gripping book by Michelle Kidd I didn't want to put the book down if you haven't read any of her books with Jack Macintosh you have missed a good set of books so exciting
The author writes very good police procedural, as good as any but the story is very dark and I'm just over reading books about terrible violence to female victims. Here is Australia we have a major discussion going on about domestic violence. Of course Michelle isn't the only author going down the same path but why does it always have to be about sexual violence to women, exploitative human trafficking and slavery. This scenario has been done to death.
MacIntosh is 47, no girl friends, always sleep deprived and despite solving various serial killer murders is still a DI. In fairness some of the twists are good and there is a lot to like but for me my last DI MacIntosh.
Three bodies are discovered all with the same m.o. but who are they and why are they dead. Meanwhile reporter Spearing has his own problems as his wife has been kidnapped. Can DI MacIntosh and his team solve the cases, while his private life might be getting more complicated. An entertaining modern mystery.
Another spine tingling thriller with D.I. Jack Macintosh in search of killers. Three bodies, all black and blue from beatings, and all with their mouths sewed shut. I liked learning more about the characters and their hidden lives.
3.5 stars. I think it was simply a case of too many characters between the multiple POVs and band of brothers I got a little confused at some point. I did like the insight into Spearing's character because he was a background character for the previous books.
An hoping there are more to come otherwise it ended very oddly! Great series need closure on some of the story lines so has to be more , it was left very open ended .
