Summer Rose

Rate this book
Newly widowed Rebecca reunites with the father who once abandoned her. As summer unfolds, she finds herself back in the dreamy world of Nantucket Island -- facing a past she thought she'd outrun years ago.

Rebecca is the estimable chef of Bar Harbor Brasserie, which she owns with the love of her life, Fred. One night, as the governor of Maine dines at one of their tables, a heinous snowstorm pushes Fred's car off the road— and Rebecca suddenly finds herself a widowed mother of three.

As Rebecca reels from the death of her husband, a ghost from her past emerges to remind her of all she lost so many years ago. Her father, Victor Sutton, is a family therapist who has helped numerous struggling families get through dark times.

Rebecca isn't keen to forgive him though, and Victor doesn't ask for it. He does explain, however, that Rebecca's mother, Esme, recently lost her second husband to a heart attack. She's alone in Nantucket and she needs help.

Lost in the wake of her husband's death and the sale of her restaurant, Rebecca follows her father back to Nantucket to check on Esme. The only problem is she is nowhere to be found.

Soon after their arrival, Rebecca and her father learn that The Sutton Book Club is struggling financially, and the mystery of her mother seems to grow more ominous by the day. On top of that, Rebecca is not sure how to face her past, nor how to ask her sisters to come home and help.

The Sutton Book Club is a safe haven for all veterans. This was ensured by Grandpa Thomas, who was a World War II veteran himself and understood the complexities of life post-battle. Through their search for Esmé, Rebecca and Victor encounter Doug, another World War II veteran, who reveals secrets from Grandpa Thomas's past that could save The Sutton Book Club and ultimately bring the entire Sutton family back together again for the first time— if they learn how to forgive.

Lately, the books I read look like cute and happy summer reads, and the truth is the opposite the plots deal with themes of grief, family secrets, and quests for forgiveness. Summer Rose is a story that weaves together complex characters, emotional depth, and a touch of mystery. The author, Katie Winters, explores the intricate relationships between a widowed chef, and her estranged core family (parents, and two younger sisters).
In this book, you learn how the power of human connection is important, especially for veterans, but also for people who have lost family members and haven't dealt with grief and heartache. Summer Rose is a story that teaches us that healing is a process and it takes time.
I like books where the plot shows real human feelings, and that everything isn't always ok, the characters of our book have grey days, and like us the readers, not everything in life goes smoothly.
I had to reduce half a star because I felt the ending was rushed, and it left us with a very open ending, there isn't any concrete solution. The plot of the second book, Trick of Light, will be the story of the second sister. I don't know if we will find a resolution on the second installment of The Sutton Book Club series. I know for sure that I will continue with the trilogy because I like the characters and the ambiance of the story, and I am looking forward to reading the other works of Katie Winters

Rebecca has been estranged from her mother and sister for years. After some major life changes she decides to cook one final meal at her restaurant. To her surprise, one of the diners is her father who convinces her to go to Nantucket to check on her mother. With her children occupied for the summer, Rebecca and Vincent head out. To there surprise mother Esme is gone. What follows is a path to reconnect and try to repair the damage of estranged family. Lots of hurt feelings and emotions rise to the surface. Can Rebecca’s
Cooking skills make a difference for the Sutton Book Club and its financial problems. Veterans Doug and Ben hope the Book Club can be saved.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. This review is my honest opinion.

The Sutton Book Club series premieres with Summer Rose. After the death of her husband, chef Rebecca closes her restaurant and retreats to her childhood home on Nantucket Island. After being estranged from most of her family, she encounters both parents and her two sisters. Katie Winters deftly describes darkness, joy and redemption in this intriguing story. Her imaginative approach and unexpected plots in this work are remarkable. I'm very excited about this new series and can't wait to see its progression !

Katie Winters introduces us to the Sutton Family in Summer Rose. Once again, she has us fall in love with the characters. Love that she is exploring and has interwoven the lives of veterans into her story! A great beginning to a new series with some twists. She makes us aware of the sometimes tragic way people react to loss. A great read!

Grab your tissues…I started weeping from the very first page and didn’t stop until the end of the book! Katie Winters has started us on a new path with this new series. It’s incredible! The storyline is amazing; the characters are so real; the plot really pulls you in and literally makes your heart hurt; but best of all is the promise of a new HEA in future books. You really need to grab a copy of this one and lock yourself away until you finish it. It’s truly an amazing read! (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and absolutely loved it!) ❤️❤️❤️

light at the end of the tunnel

Years of repressed grief. Years of separation. Years of why? The Sutton family found away to reach out over the chasm of time and grief to start forgiving and healing. There is hope in this story of overcoming loss and loneliness that comes with each. Heartbreak can be a universal feeling that allows one to understand others pain and want to help create some breaks from the burden. I hate that I have to wait for the next book but I am thankful that it is only a few days.

I like this author a lot - good, clean, women's fiction. However, she has some depressing themes...the relationships have trauma, which was purposeful, I am sure. I just read this type of lit for "feel-good" escape. I don't need to have it be Pollyanna, but I think the themes could be effective with less prose. I will read the entire series as I really do like the characters and they are evolving into self-aware, confident characters.

Love not lost...

A broken family reunited by tears and forgiveness. Rebecca was a leader in providing a pathway to bring a family united in each tearful story of each of her sisters, mother, and eventually her father. The sun shone on their lives after darkness had hidden their stories. How tragedy was turned into belief in love for a family devoid of kindness and closeness. Thank you Katie Winters for sharing.

A plethora of deep feelings

This book shared such deep feelings of love, heart break, death, power and the realization that if you ignore these things they will not go away! You have to address each issue head on! Each chapter led right to the next chapter and you couldn’t put it down!

Love and lost....

Very good book. Lost of loved ones can certainly have a devastating impact on family and tear them apart and even though I've had a few I can't imagine ever being apart from the rest of my family. But everyone deals with loss differently. I'm so glad the Sutton were able to come back together and start to heal.

Summer Rose

I gave this book 5 Stars, although it has one major black mark! It ended too soon & without warning! Here I am, reading along, & it's done! Otherwise, despite layers of sadness, I loved it! I love the characters, except one, & he's growing on me! I love the setting, it's the closest I'll come to being there. I'm ready for book #2!

Lovely story

Loved this heartwarming, feel-good story and appreciate that its a clean read. I chose 4 stars because of both grammatical ("had had" is incorrect English) and a couple of plot errors. I noted them and hope the author or whomever fixes these things reads my suggestions. :-)

Well written and perfectly paced

Interesting and unusual characters help bring the legacy of loss not delt with, through three generations of the family. Family dynamics don't really change even after decades apart, it is easy to slip into old roles.

The book captivated my attention. It speaks of real life’s pain and disappointments. It also shows resilience of a family to overcome the hurdles and find a way forward.

Family suffering

The story is slow to start with many
questions in your mind but it can bring help for healing. I had lost my husband about a year ago and could see and feel so many of the emotions.

Summer Rose

This book was so wet written you could see all of the tragedy and all of the love. I really enjoyed how all of the family ended up on Nantucket and solved the problem to keep the book house open. I am looking forward to reading more of Katie's books.

Summer Rose a clean book.

This book was a bit difficult for me to get into but I kept on reading. It ended up being enjoyable but I am not fond of her style of writing. I doubt that I will read other of her books. I will say she writes a clean book without sex and profanity.

Great story

The story was great. All the ups and downs of family life and living years apart. All the characters were so full of life and living the best way they could. Happy that they all came together in the end and forgave each other. Thank you for a good read.

Another great read

This was a great book. It shows how people can carry pain and never really deal with it. It shows how easy it is to Pretend until the pretending becomes real in the mind and might never get to the root.
