Trick of Light

Rate this book
A Sutton daughter flees Savannah, a monstrous husband, and his sexist family. But when she returns to Nantucket, she learns that the past is not done with her yet -- and that a long-lost love may not have forgotten about her, either.

Bethany Sutton is one of the most sought-after surgeons across the east coast. Her expertise has brought hundreds of patients back to good health. But, despite her intellect and hard work, her husband and his family don't respect her. The reason is clear. Men are meant to be surgeons, not women. How dare she take their place?

Bethany's husband is a surgeon, too. He comes from a long line of Savannah surgeons, all of whom expected him to carry on the family name in the medical field. The only he's not a very good surgeon. And when he makes yet another mistake on the operating table, he cuts Bethany out of his life -- and forces her to analyze the dynamics of their relationship and the sexism in his family.

Does she really want to raise her children around these people?

When Bethany returns to Nantucket with her three children in tow, an old friend contacts her out of the blue, totally upending her already topsy-turvy life.

Rod is a social worker, with a daughter and a grandson he adores more than anything. He knows Bethany is the only person in the world who can save his family -- but he also knows that he was tremendously cruel to her in the past. He hopes she can forgive him just enough. He needs her to open her heart to him. He needs her help.

Dive into book two of The Sutton Book Club series, which digs into the heart and soul of the Sutton family, the power of truth and love, and the complex nature of human relationships.

Everybody Reaps What They Sow

Katie Winters's Trick of Light (Sutton Book Club 2) focuses on middle Sutton sister Bethany, a successful Savannah surgeon married into a rich family that values women only as surgeon's wives, raising the surgeon's children and serving as arm candy. They don't respect Bethany's top grades and excellent bedside manner; they don't respect her drive to be the best at whatever she wants to do--in her case, surgery. If she's going to marry the son of legendary surgeon Bob Waterstone, she'll give up her scrubs for a sweet house dress! Bethany doesn't care; she's in love with Nick.
When Nick's parents tell her one time too many to "think of the children" by taking them out of daycare and quitting surgery to raise them and cheer up Nick, Bethany drives her 3 kids from Savannah to her childhood home, Nantucket island. Her older sister, Rebecca, moved back from Maine with her 3 teens in book 1 following her husband's death and the closure of her restaurant soon afterward. Third sister Valerie is still in California (I expect Book 3 will follow her), and their younger brother Joel, who died of leukemia at age 10 and kindled Bethany's dream of healing patients, is unaware of the drama that followed: his father Victor's affair and abandonment; the sisters' separation all over the country; Victor's recruitment of Rebecca to find his ex-wife (and her mom) Esme; Rebecca's opening of a new restaurant in the endangered Sutton Book Club building, and the renewal of friendship between Victor and Esme (the last 3 being Book 1).
Bethany loves living on Nantucket, but her memory of Nick as she last saw him--drunk, fat, and insulting--makes her realize she should talk to him about how his narcissism and alcoholism are affecting their lives. She takes time away from an important surgery (more on that later) to visit her old house, and while he ignored her calls and texts, he must leave his office when she knocks on the door. She learns he always felt family pressure to be a surgeon when he really wanted to write. No wonder he wasn't good at it! No wonder his own father promoted Bethany to the position that was supposedly his from birth! No wonder he won't fight the divorce Bethany wants!
Meanwhile, elsewhere on Nantucket there's a newly minted social worker named Rod. He and Bethany had been a couple since grade school, but in a sleep-deprived, post-panic attack moment of madness in her summer surgical internship at New York Hospital, she broke up with him. Rod refers obliquely to a "mistake" he made at 18, and any reader who can count will guess he got a girl pregnant. It wasn't revenge; it was just a woman who learned he was free and took advantage of him. When the baby, Renee, arrived, the mother said she wanted nothing to do with either of them. Rod became a single dad, and when Renee got pregnant at 21, Rod took care of her and baby Felix.
When Rod picks up Felix from daycare he notices bruises all over his grandson's body and blames the father, but the diagnosis is aggressive cancer from a spinal column tumor. Despite their history, Bethany vows to do the tumor removal surgery herself!
She schedules Felix's surgery at her former hospital in Savannah and, after the divorce discussion with Nick previously mentioned, goes into the OR. Felix's tumor is removed in a few hours, and pending further test results he'll be in remission. While he's recovering, Rod asks Bethany to dinner, and they delicately discuss her "mistake" at 17 (breaking up with him suddenly by phone), his own mistake at 18 (leading to Renee), and the chance of getting back together all these years later (nonexistent until the divorce goes through, but then extremely likely)!
This is, in many ways, a more satisfying book than Book 1, which introduced the main characters and set up plot lines for each living Sutton sibling. I loved Book 1, and I found the transition from Rebecca to Bethany jarring, but this is more than a treatise on sexism in the medical field (I haven't seen or even heard of a female surgeon, so sexism may have--I don't say "definitely"--had something to do with it); it's a study of how a woman aspiring to excel in a typically male profession succeeds with determination and ramen, and how a woman with an outwardly perfect life can suffer in silence, her sobs unheard and ignored. Bethany is far from perfect, and narcissist Nick is much further (the stifling of his desire to write explains but does NOT excuse his drinking, belligerence, and errors in surgery that could cost a patient's life or health--and having a father who prizes his name over everything else doesn't help; he covers up his son's errors so not even Bethany knows about the malpractice settlements). Rod is the anti-Nick, the jilted nice guy whose one-night stand led to Renee, Felix, and ultimately a reunion with Bethany, who ends the book as Head of Surgery at Nantucket Hospital! Nick's terrible parents? Not in the book after Bethany left Savannah. I loved it!

Trick of Light

Another great story! This one meant more to me because Much of this book's story takes place in Savannah Georgia. I'm from Georgia, & even though I've only been to Savannah once, I could picture it, & FEEL the humidity! It's almost that bad in my corner of the state! But that's how good Ms. Winters descriptions are! This story picked up where the first one left off pretty seamlessly. Rebecca had returned to Savannah & found her marriage troubles had magnified, so to shield her children she brings them to Nantucket to meet the side of their family they had never met. Now, no further Spoilers!

The story does kind of skip around a bit, but I had no trouble keeping up! The new characters are just as well written as those in the first book of the series. This story has it all! Confusion, despair, love, fear, hope, joy, sadness & happiness, dreams & lost dreams. Old loves falling apart. Other old loves becoming new loves. Of course Nantucket is a major character, as is Savannah. Nantucket on the sea, Savannah very near to the sea. Both historical places loved by tourists! I love the sea & it's beaches, what better setting for great stories? Unless the mountains? I love both! And I loved this book! Looking forward to the next installment!

One note though. There were some editing problems. I see this often in Kindle ebooks. They're not as frequent as in some. They don't really affect the reading of the book, at least they didn't for me. I've had some that were nearly unreadable due to the frequency of typos, or characters which changed from page to page! Blond here, brunette there, then blond again! You get the picture! Nothing like that here. Just wanted you to be aware!

Bethany Sutton Waterston has wanted to be a surgeon all her life. She faced opposition from many who thought women couldn’t be surgeons, including her father in law.
When she was named to the job over her husband Nick, jealousy developed. A trip back to Nantucket makes Bethany realize something is wrong

When her husband Nick comes home refusing to talk and drinking heavily Bethany tries to get the truth. It is possible Nick had another botched surgery event. When faced with hostility from her in-laws, she takes the children and returns to Nantucket.

When her former high school boyfriend reaches out, distraught over his grandson’s health, Bethany realizes she needs to help.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. This review is my honest opinion.

Ohmigod…I absolutely LOVE this new series by Katie Winters! The Sutton Book Club series has all the bells and whistles that we’ve come not only to expect but also appreciate from Ms Winters. As always, have your tissues ready—you’ll need them.

Trick of Light is truly a special read…The storyline is spectacular; the characters fully developed; the plot twists are uniquely developed; and as sure as the sun rises in the East—the road to the HEA comes with all the pain and fear that love usually does. But you absolutely must read this book! I can’t wait for you to continue The Sutton Book Club journey. (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and definitely recommend it!!) ❤️❤️❤️

Famed surgeon Bethany Sutton has to watch the disintegration of her marriage to "golden boy" Nick Waterstone, also a surgeon. Bethany must face the fact that many "old money' people don't accept women as surgeons, especially technically superior ones. When she leaves Savannah for her home town of Nantucket, she introduces her three children to a new and freer lifestyle. She reconnects with her first love, Rod, who has a very sick grandson. It was sad to see how others wrongly perceive strong women and the prejudice these women face. Katie Winters did a wonderful job of showing this unfairness and also the renewing love of family and friends. It was a beautiful book.

A surgeon's cut.....

Bethany and Rod, never really parted. Held together with painful memories, cast aside with remarkable strides into medical history. She suffered through endless years of stifled family rules, eventually becoming a woman mastering her choice of careers. Her children were given a role model to aspire to and a surgeon acknowledged as the best of the best. All roads led her back to her beginnings of her quest, and the love of her life. A light not kept under a bushel. Thank you Katie Winters!.

Trick of Light is book 2 in the Sutton Book Club series by Katie Winters, 4.5 stars

Next up is Bethany, an renowned surgeon who’s headed back to Georgia to either put her life back together with her husband Nick or move her family back to Nantucket and start fresh and possibly rekindle a lost love…no respect from in laws or husband, male dominated field, past love, and more…

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy (ARC) of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Bethany Sutton is a famous pediatric surgeon - but her home life leaves much to be desired. She decides to leave Savannah and bring her kids to Nantucket - where she spent her childhood. Her childhood love, Rod, is also on the island and when he needs her expertise - her worlds collide. I really liked the medical aspect of this book - since I'm a doctor too. I really enjoyed the story and seeing Bethany change her world view and her relationship view - and moving forward with her life in Nantucket - away from Savannah. Great book!

I guess this is an unpopular opinion...

This book had no continuity or ease. The storyline was muddled and riddled with errors.

It was also highly unrealistic in terms of feelings and reactions. I mean, who is perfectly OK after being told they've been cheated on...for years?!

This book had potential, but it all got lost in the details - or lack thereof.

The series is getting better - more positive themes and more character development. It was just so sad in the beginning. I read my women’s fiction for escape from real life issues. A little conflict and angst is fine but having it dominate us too much - for me. I do want to continue the series as it is engaging & I am finding my bonds with the characters.

In A Trick of Light by Katie Winters we get to follow Bethany Sutton’s life as it unfolds between the present and past. It addresses the inequality and treatment of women in medicine and the destruction of offspring by over indulgent parents and their unrealistic expectations if their children!

I am enjoying reading this series. All about how life can be shaped by past experiences and mistakes. Yet it is still possible for hope to remain and dreams come true.

Wonderful, clean romance!!

There's nothing more disappointing than to read two or three chapters of a book and turn the page to find smut. Ms. Winters writings are true to life, exciting and full of clean, sweet love. I've find a new favorite author!
