What should have been a break in a long chain of unsolved robberies leads Detective Valor Lovell into the dark world of murder, organ theft, and the black market. His informant, Miranda, shines light on the thefts tearing through Cauldron City and how they connect to the dead weight case continuing to thwart the detectives of Precinct #153.
To complicate matters, her security is his problem.
One underground group wants her dead. Another wants her alive but out of the hands of law enforcement. But the third, as mysterious as the woman determined to change her colors, could lead to the downfall of everything he holds dear.
The story is just too chaotic. Told from the point of.view of a police detective Lovell, who also happens to be a magic user (a magicer) he has recently been put in charge of an horrific case. A disgraced doctor has been kidnapping people (from new born babies to adults of all ages) and harvesting their organs.......... More specifically their hearts. His victims number in the hundreds, added to which he has developed toxins which kill across all species, shifter, unicorn, matured and human resulting in massive deaths and casualties. They know who the doctor is but catching him is proving difficult as he has magical skills. That's the basis of the story, a lot there to deal wth, but these characters spend their time discussing the pranks to be played in the office of coffee quality and the need for better machines and roasters. Then there is the team hunting the mad doctor, you'd expect a task force of great size but no......we have three detectives assigned, one of whom is a trainee.................. More time is spent with the whimsy of the dragons than the investigation and while the dragons are fun a villian this evil should demand more effort than is awarded to him. The worldbuilding is good, the dragons sound like a lot of fun and the unicorns are also a great addition. I love this authors other works, this is written under a pseudonym, I just think a detective mystery needs a more structured approach................
We continue within the same precinct and general arc as the previous book, Dead Weight. But this time, we're following detective Lovell and informant/cadet Miranda as they try to further the case that has Cauldron City in its grasp by bringing new information to light. This is not an easy task, as it seems the bad guys are always at least one step ahead, causing more deaths and mayhem every time they think they're getting a bit closer. Yeah, they have their work cut out for them.
Miranda and Valor's (detective Lovell) story is one of service, revelations and family. Yeah, I think that's pretty appropriate :) Throughout this instalment's trials and tribulations, the characters learn much about themselves while growing toward each other and trying to protect the city and everyone in it.
I can't wait to read more about all the amazing characters we've met in the next books!
This book throws you from one situation to another, only letting you come up for air to cuddle Pumpkin (it's really needed sometimes) or check the hummingbirds' feeding stations before plunging you back into it again.
I love this series! I mean... how can I not? Expect this book to be filled to the brim with chaos, witty banter (but still with a serious touch), unicorns, an elephant shifter needing hugs, possessive dragons, and a lot of magic. I really hope that the author continues with this series. Highly recommended!!!
I really enjoy Ms. Robbins stories. This is the second book under this pen name. She SAYS there is a system to her use of way too many pen names. I am not sure I believe her!
Miranda is a very unusual character. She was caught shop lifting and the judge gave her time as a cop instead of jail. Lovell is a detective who gets assigned to work with her.
As usual, with any of Ms. Robbins books under any pen name, they end up living together and it is platonically for now.
Ms. Robbins weaves a wonderful story that advances the storyline from the first book, but keeps this romance going.
I recommend this book to anyone that likes shifter romances that are actually a series to solve a crime.
I absolutely adored the first book in this series - it's one of my "go to" books when I don't have a new one to read. Book two is joining that list too! I have been looking forward to the release of this book and was definitely not disappointed! I had to set alarms to make myself put the book down and got to bed on time. I love this world the author has built, the characters in it, and this book expanded it dramatically! I am going to pre-order the next book as soon as it's listed for sale, which is something I very rarely do. If I could give it 10 stars I would!
I loved this! While significantly darker than book 1, the exploration into Lovell's character gave me a great idea of what kind of people call Cauldron City home (in addition to certain unicorns and opal dragons). The introduction of brown dragons and another potential episode of Alicia's reality show are fun asides to this rather grim police investigation. I gotta admit - I really want to see this investigation wind up with appropriate justice on the mad doctor AND the creation of the reality show. Dare I hope for novels showing the creation of the reality show? I'll beg - please, please, please?!?!?
This world is absolutely fascinating, with dragons and many other shifters. This is about a cop who is assigned a partner, a very intelligent young woman. The cops are on the hunt for a serial killer. This book is an interesting blend of urban fantasy, laugh out loud humor, heart, and pathos as the serial killer takes more victims. It's a world that I really wish I lived in, because of the magic and the joy these people taken one another. There are several very heavy twists, and I was very sad at the ending because I have to wait on the next book to come out. I will definitely read the next book in the series.
As a matter of fact, it has some very sad parts that may make you angry. However, it has great characters and a fascinating plot. The story does appear to immediately launch straight from the ending of "Dead Weight", so you should certainly read that tale first. If you don't particularly remember the ending of that story, then I highly recommend you review that before perusing this one. You could also do like I am doing. Go back and reread the first book after you read the second one. It's all good!
The action was riveting, and heart racing, didn’t want to put the book down to go to work. The family is also great, found family can be some of the most rewarding. Love the characters who pop up in this as well, well worth the wait! Can’t wait for another installment, but I will reread this book a few times first. Thank you for a great story.
I am fully engaged in the story, very much enjoying the drama and the characters. The world building is fantastic, and I love how our world has blended so well with this fantasy world. At this point, it’s hard to wait for the next book! This author never disappoints, no matter what nom de plume is being used.
This book is so entertaining. There is some real darkness, and quite a bit of death. On the upside, the characters are dynamic, engaging, and endearing. I can’t wait for the next book and to see the next set of twists and turns at precinct 153.
I loved the first book with Jace and this second book with Valor was just as good! The character relationships GP Robbins builds are amazing whether it be parent and child, friends, or slow burn romance. I just love the dynamics and the playful conversations
It seems as if everyone’s a dragon. The baddy in this series is so heinous that I had to take several breaks and read something light and uplifting before I could finish this. The nasty bad guy is still at large and his crimes are escalating, I’m looking forward to the next in the series where (fingers crossed) he gets his comeuppance.
Similar to the first of the series, there are lots of unicorn and dragon shifters, an even higher body count, and some glacial progress made on the primary case. Book three of the series will feature Jace (same as book one) again. Really mild romantic side plot, not enough IMO to classify this book as a romance.
Loved this whole book, without spoilers,I can admit I wept buckets at one scene. Can't wait for the next part of the story. Love all the books by this author in each of their pseudonyms. Different but all excellent!
This series has been amazing so far. I loved Valor and his cadet. This story took some surprising turns and that was a bit of a Rollercoaster ride for me. All in all another excellent tale. I am so lookibg forward to seeingnwhat happens next!
It was fun learning more about the detectives that work with Jace the unicorn. Dragons, unicorns, hummingbirds, wolf dogs, and magic all mixed with humor and a horrible criminal.
The second book in this series is filled with even more plot twists and turns, flirting, pranking, team, and family. the fight against the evil doctor and his minions continues, while the story focuses on a different team member. I am excited to see what happens next!
I really enjoyed the first books gentle introduction through Jace. I absolutely loved the faster pace and action of the second book through Valour. Can not wait for the third book
R J Blain is costing me a fortune 😉 I've found another series and I need to get the next book so I can keep up with her. Love the books, love all her work to-date.
Hating the wait between but… unicorns pooping gems? lol. Crazy madmen needing to be killed so badly that serial killers help law enforcement to go after him.
Characters are well developed and interesting. Story flows smoothly with a well developed plot line leaving reader wanting more. Would totally recommend for someone wanting to escape reality for a while.
Great second installment in this multipart series. The tension is building as the detectives of Precinct 153 continue to unravel the crimes first discovered in Dead Weight.
I can’t wait for the next installment. Everything under any of this author’s pen names are wonderfully written. Thank you for every hour of entertainment.
The characters are amazing, the world building is fantastic, and the mystery is dark and dangerous. I look forward to see where the overarching plot will take us, because this is intriguing.
