Enter the land of Valdenia, where dreams rage and nightmares reign.

The fifth spine contains more answers than Raine bargains for—including a truth he’d much rather keep secret. When Sidian starts to read a certain book, Raine resigns himself to discovery and rejection.

Meanwhile, the dragons are restless and divided. Some want peace. Others crave retribution.

Before long, Raine is swept into a desperate, disorderly journey. One that tests his endurance. His integrity. And ultimately, his heart.

*Snared is the conclusion of the duology, When Nightmares Reign. It is set to release 5/1/2024. However, this date may get moved forward!

This story is a gay fantasy romance featuring enemies-to-lovers dynamics, graphic depictions of violence and sexual situations, as well as strong language which may not be appropriate for all readers.*

So disappointing!

When I started, I found the book promising and thought it had the potential to be a bestseller with a five-star rating. However, it was disappointing due to the excessive, unnecessary details. Most of the main characters in the story were petty and childish, and the author spent too much time reiterating the same information over two books while important aspects of the story were given very little attention. Instead of focusing on the dragons' constant arguments and the main character's mundane activities, the author could have delved into other essential elements. For instance, explanations on how the dragon-human mate transformed into a dragon, the dragon reunions with their parents, and how the ichneumons managed to take over human bodies for centuries without detection would have been interesting. Additionally, including a few chapters from Sidian's point of view, increasing the romantic scenes involving the main character, and exploring a little more into the other dragons' reunions with their mates would have enhanced the storyline. The frequent focus on Raine's cock getting hard and the repetitive descriptions of him taking a bath/combing his hair in the story became tedious and distracting. I am upset that I spent so much time on this foolish book. I wish I were someone who could have stopped in the middle.

Still good. Not as good as the first but still good.
Betonys storm was excruciatingly annoying. The ending or epilogue wasn’t good. Like no you should not begin anew with the shift ass people

Wow.

I can't remember the last time I felt so complete after finishing a series. I'm not sure what to do with myself now - scouring Goodreads for the next few hours attempting to find another masterpiece like this doesn't seem appealing, and I'm not ready to leave the world of Valdenia and its charming inhabitants either. I'm sorely tempted to just stare at my ceiling for the next week and a half to relive the entire experience in my head.

The authenticity of Sidian and Raine's relationship?? HELLO! MM authors in the back, I need y'all to take notes about how to successfully write a fated mates story without insta-love, 90% smut with 10% plot, little to no character arcs, and airheaded side characters.

Everything about When Nightmares Reign was perfect - it has thoroughly ruined me for any other cheap, shallow, 250-page MM dragon romantasy book FOREVER. Of course, quick books like that are a fun way to pass time, but Loy has reminded me of how great this genre could be if we had more writers like her churning out stories that they actually care about (and aren't interested in solely for monetary purposes). We don't need a 15-part series where everyone, their friends, uncles and neighbors are gay, have a GFY (gay for you) awakening after meeting "the one", while maybe - heavy on maybe - one minor detail is added to each to the overarching plot in each installment that is never truly resolved. What we do need are well-developed books that realistically depict how relationships change over time, KEEPING IN MIND THAT THE RELATIONSHIP IS SECONDARY TO THE PLOT.

Misu Loy is one of those brilliant authors that you stumble upon every 100 or so novels (if you're lucky), where her superlative writing style makes you forget that you're literally staring at words on a page/screen because you feel as if you're a character in her world watching everything take place. There wasn't a single moment where it was obvious to the reader that Loy had stopped writing and picked up the plot where she left off. If anything, this series seemed like it was written in one go - as a 900–1000-page novel that was perfectly sliced in half. Like I said, where do I possibly go from here? Not much can surpass this. I'm beyond thrilled to have discovered Misu Loy, and so excited to see what else she writes in future years.

At the end of my review of the first book in this series, Hunted, I jokingly made a remark about needing Loy to sign whatever legal documents necessary in order to turn this into a TV show. I am no longer joking. I need this story to be turned into every media format imaginable ASAP. I need an anime, manga, webcomic, movie series, Netflix/Hulu/Prime Original, kdrama, donghua, WHATEVER!!!

PLEASE, I'M ON MY HANDS AND KNEES.

TLDR: I could quite honestly rave about this series and its excellence for hours. Read the damn books.

not satisfied with that ending tbh

SPOLIERS

I liked most of the side characters but all the teasing was a bit much and just over the top sometimes. Raine is hugely immature throughout the story but you can’t help liking him anyway. Sidian was harder to pin down an opinion on. I think I had such a hard time with his character because to me, he seemed to be manipulating Raine even when he was ‘in love’ with him and that just took the warm-fuzzies out of it.

Raine was criticized a lot and called a coward by people who could have offered guidance and kinder words instead. Also, I was really confused by things like the dragons choice to drink a lot in the city on their way to infiltrate the funeral? Like it’s easy to fake and dump out a drink you don’t want to stay sharp, is all I’m saying.

Sidian’s true betrayal took me by surprise tbh and made me not like his and Raine’s relationship as much, and how he criticized Raine’s reactions to his parents? Just rude. I definitely think his parents didn’t grovel enough whatsoever. And like, did any of the younger dragons even ask Raine if they could tell their parents who was who? No. They just assumed, and then everyone blamed Raine for that assumption and again called him a coward.

So all of that took a lot of the enjoyment of the story away for me. I also would have liked a little more at the end about who is running the country? We didn’t get anything between the nine are dead and now dragons are free. I’m left feeling very dissatisfied after reading all of that. A little less teasing and a little more resolution would be welcome in future books.

*me for 80% of this book* LET👏RAINE👏GET👏RAILED👏
There is a lot of unnecessary fluff and it could really use good editing, but it's a satisfying conclusion to the series.
There was only one "twist" that was even slighty a surprise, but the tropes are fun anyways.
I just wish they had explained Sidian's dragon form more, like is he just a straight up dragon now?? So he'll live for 1000+ years????? It would have been nice if dragon/human mating was explored more.
Lastly, his mom can go screw off. It's obvious who Raine's parents are, but the author did absolutely nothing to endear us to them. They could have at least tried to have them do something redeeming, but no they're just pricks the whole way through.
As much as I loved this book, it is neither slow burn nor enemies to lovers. It's two people who have been attracted for a while constantly getting interrupted. Which gets annoying after a while.

I absolutely didn’t want this story to end, I just love Raine and Sidian!! The brilliant story, the wonderful dragons and humans, and all the love. I do so love dragons, but when I saw this story that said enemies to lovers and slow burn, I knew I would be hooked, not to mention set it fantasy world! All my favorite tropes in this wonderful duology!

What an epic story! I devoured this duology and I kind of wish there was a third book.

I will say, the ending felt quite rushed with some questions completely unanswered that I definitely want answers to, That was never explained which is kind of frustrating. Also Raine's lack of reaction to it or questioning of it was strange.

I would recommend this to a friend.

I just want to clarify one thing. When people want to have sex with each other but can't because something interrupts them constantly, it's not a slowburn. Slowburn is about emotions and in this book, Sidian gives us 180 with his emotions and the whole book lost its appeal for me.

3.75 stars. I adored spending time with the characters and this world, which gave me the most enjoyment for this second book. However, I do feel that the plot and the relationship between the MCs fell apart in this book. Once Raine and Sidian moved from friends to lovers, to me they turned into completely different people. The expectations for their dynamics that had been set up throughout the first book suddenly weren't there. Additionally, the plot kept building up and hyping up the stakes/villains/climactic events, but the actual execution was too easy and ended up not making much sense to me why everyone was so worried in the first place. But we do end with everything wrapped up, so I wasn't overly frustrated and still happy I read it.

Knowing what I know now about this book, would I still read it if I went back in time?
Yes.

See below for the four criteria I use to decide whether and when to read a book

CHARACTERS: As mentioned, Raine and Sidian changed into completely different people in terms of being lovers. It didn't make much sense to me and I saw them as suddenly fulfilling formulaic roles that were in no way set up originally by how the characters are introduced to us. There are echoes of D/s and very one-sided top/bottom, where all signs had pointed to a very equal relationship without those power-plays, especially not one-sided. Sidian especially felt completely different to me once he'd "turned on his charm." It felt very hollow and truly not real to me. Similarly, I can absolutely see Raine as being inexperienced given the dragon lore, but for him to so suddenly seem to have no clue about anything and be so shocked by Sidian's "insatiability" in bed when it's specifically set up that dragons have a high sex drive... it just felt weird to me. But for the rest of the characters, I appreciated that we have the whole cast and ensemble coming together. At times it felt almost too much, with so many issues that it was hard for the author to give each theme enough attention, but I truly adored the cast.

PLOT: Ultimately, book two takes the MCs from friends-to-lovers, and the quest continues to free all the dragons in captivity, as well as vanquish the villains. The group dynamics are deliberately chaotic, with too many people in charge and struggling to come together and find common ground, which leads to quite a bit of missteps. In the end, after all of this planning and establishing the greatest of all villains and threats to dragonkind, I personally felt that the massive wave crashing towards shore suddenly evaporated. Like a surfer who doesn't get an actual wave to ride. I couldn't understand what the worry was because everything seemed so easy in the end. But are they successful in their endeavors? Yes! And I did enjoy the journey.

EMOTIONAL INTENSITY: There is no good/bad here. Sometimes I just want a low-investment entertainment read whereas other times a high-stakes 'I need a therapist to recover' is what I need.

3:5/medium. I think this had the potential to be higher, if the established stakes and characteristics had been given true follow-through. But the world is still immersive and was worth the read for that.

CATHARTIC FULFILLMENT: Is the emotional journey worth it? Do I finish this book feeling that I've crested the wave of the climactic moment and everything has been settled, leaving me settled and fulfilled?

50%. HEA! Everything is pretty much wrapped up without hanging threads. Didn't get that chance to really feel the success though because of how easy and almost non-existent the climactic event was. But I'm still happy I read this one.

This was a mostly satisfying conclusion to the story, and let me tell you I was SO excited when it showed up on my kindle because I had kinda forgotten it was due to release.

So I will give my one nitpick right now: I didn’t do a reread of Hunted, so I struggled to keep all the characters straight. I could’ve used some really basic reminders even as basic as “Reign’s cousin” or something?

But otherwise, I really enjoyed this. Things came back as I read, and then I couldn’t put it down. Honestly what I loved so much about the first book shone just as bright in the second: the characterization and the pacing. Reign has to be one of my favorite characters, I think. He is at times bratty, stubborn, and a little bit conceited, but all of those less than perfect qualities make him well rounded and fun. I still love his friendship with Aly, as well as the way he feels emotions so deeply and unashamedly.

I think the only other critique I have would be that the big battle ended ~too~ smoothly? I think I’d have liked a bit more of what happened once the doors opened and the rest of the world found out what happened, if that makes sense (I’m being purposefully vague here). It felt a little glossed over. But the author said a lot was cut for length, of course. I’m so glad the epilogues were kept :) I’d love to see more slice-of-life moments from this world.

Overall, this duology is definitely on my list of favorites from this year and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves some good fantasy/adventure with their romance.

All and all this was a great ending to a fantastic story told entertainly and beautifully. Sad to see Raine and Sidian go, but happy we got to read their story. I can't wait to see what Misu Loy comes up with next! Truly a hidden gem of an author that I've discovered this year!❤️

Exceptional

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this series! I loved the relationship that blossomed between Sidian and Raine and all their friends. The story was wonderfully complex and the struggles against the Nine were engaging. Also I loved the map and world building!

My only gripe was the lack of confrontation with Betany. It annoyed me that while she seemed to feel guilty occasionally, she mostly was unwilling to change and continuously put the group in harms way… and no one told her off for it! It made me so frustrated!

(SPOILERS!)

It also frustrated me that she only cared about making reparations with Raine after she knew he was her son. That shows me that she had essentially no growth and even Lorrivare got a little aggressive at the end (though I understand his frustration a little more with the whole crying mate thing). Betany was still callous and rude right up until the very very last page and it was just incredibly frustrating that she really didn’t have much character growth.

I give this three stars only because no one takes one-star reviews seriously. I read the first book, I’m 80% through this sequel, and I can’t describe how tired I am of incessant descriptions of erections that lead nowhere. When it’s that repetitive it’s not sexy or funny, just boring. Second, while I realize any good romance story has to include some obstacle, I am sick to death of the overused “I love him and he may think he loves me but he’ll eventually realize I’m bad for him and come to despise me so I’ve got to push him away for his own good blah blah blah…” God help me, it makes me want to throw my tablet against the wall. It’s probably a sign that I’ve read too many romance novels and I need to get a life.

Wait, what? Firstly the series is so psychologically naive that it seems to have been written by a child. Secondly the duology ends with a major completely unexplained deus-ex-machina when suddenly someone turns into a dragon and saves the day and the dragons who apparently died are suddenly alive and attending a wedding reception and demonstrating completely unmotivated and unexplained psychological and emotional growth. And what is it with straight women writing m/m sexually explicit and inaccurate intimacy scenes? She writes them better and more sparingly than most but I just don't get the fascination these straight women have and the presumption involved. At least this author spends more time on story than sex scenes.

SPOILERS

Okay five stars because I loved this series and devoured it.
But can anyone explain Sidian being a dragon to me? It sounds like he didn't have any of the signs Raine did, such as being impervious to heat, being stronger and faster, etc. And his hair and eyes were not the same color, at least I interpret fawn as very brown whereas his hair is blue-black. He also didn't experience sexual awakening when meeting Raine?? I could totally be interpreting things wrong, which is why I'm asking for clarification. Him being a dragon struck me out of left field and then wasn't explained?? Where did he come from?? Whose child is he?? I'm so confused lol

an amazing duology

The first book I read in 8 hours and all through the night - I think I got a total of two hours of total sleep. I read this immediately after and this is the best series I’ve read in a hot minute. It’s amazingly slow burn but the emotional hits make it worth it. The world building, the characters, the plot…I could go on. I’d love to read more - make a conflict to prolong the story that much more, just to get more of the characters. I’d love to see the developing relationships and their development of society - there’s inklings of possible conflicts that can be used to create another plot *hint hint* I’m so sad to see them go!

a little bit of mixed feelings on this one, but It was solid for the most part. however, why is sidian the only one who ever thinks ahead in this series? it baffles me that the dragons didn’t make a solid plan once before entering the city 😭 regardless, this book does have a lot of strong points and I did enjoy it. I just wish raine would stop and think sometimes instead of jump to conclusions. I also wish we could see raine explore his complex relationship with his birth parents, but alas. that being said, I can tell that the author genuinely has passion for the world that they have created and that in itself makes the book 10x more charming.

Floored

My only complaint is that it's over. This world was enchanting and I found myself completely immersed in Raine and Sid's adventure! (Not to mention the oh-so-satisfying slow burn romance that had me screaming for joy and hellbent to push through every emotional rise and fall between these characters!) I would have cried in frustration if I hadn't found this duology before both parts were out, and the two part epilogue felt so, so fulfilling compared to if it had just ended.

3.5, Enjoyable but Missing Some Things

3.5, I rounded up! The series had soooo much potential! I feel the “big villain” could have been introduced a bit more smoothly, and characters felt very simple and childish at parts. It picked up again at the ending, and the start was good. There was just a lot of filler content. I almost stopped reading, but I am glad I finished it. All the big loose ends got tied off. The first book was very good, I wish the second had kept that dramatic pace going.

amazing!!

If you haven’t read this amazing Duology yet you absolutely have to!! Stunning world building, amazing cast of characters, an epic plot including deep topics (racism/specism, forgiveness, grief and what it means to be a monster) and DRAGONS!!

Enemies to friends to lovers
Slow burn (but mostly in the first book, it’s definitely red hot in this one!)

Minus one star for the ending. That dragon mother did NOT deserve another chance. That aside this book was fun. It seemed silly at times with the amount of teasing from the others in the group but it was entertaining. I don't think I'll re-read this because of how infuriating Betony was but it was still fun.

I took time to reflect on my ranting and aside from I still think this could’ve potentially been a bit shorter, I realize I did NOT pick up on MAJOR clues as to Sidian being able to change forms. I’m dumb. Carry on Misu Loy, I see you. I just needed time to process 😅 I look forward to more from this author ♥️

a good conclusion to the story! this book dives a little but more into the plot than book one while still maintaining the goofy energy. i think it does a decent job tying up the loose ends and plot. i do feel like the ending was a bit rushed and i would’ve loved more context and time spend on that. other than that though i liked reading it and had a fun time.

Easy read

The main characters are likeable with a good ending. I personally found some of the banter and relationships a bit childish hence the 4 stars. If you enjoy cute exchanges, no real edge of your seat danger, then you'll enjoy this book.
