As editor and later publisher at Askild & Kärnekull, Lindfors, Bokförlaget Bra Böcker/Wiken and later with his own publishing house Replik he has introduced many current authors into Sweden, including several science fiction authors. He is a contributor to The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and to The Encyclopedia of Fantasy, edited by John Clute and Peter Nicholls; and has written three major literary overviews in Swedish, a two-volume work about science fiction and one-volume works on psychological suspense fiction and on fantasy. As a translator, he has rendered Lemony Snicket's and many of Stephen King's novels into Swedish.

Terrific collection of Swedish authors, many of them are already well-known in North America due to the popularity of Swedish crime fiction. This book introduced me to many new authors whose books I will be seeking out, such as Johan Theorin, Tove Alsterdal and Hakan Nesser.
Another author included in the collection is Cilla Borjlind, who wrote one of the stories along with her husband, Rolf. This couple have created many crime dramas for television and they have also written numerous scripts based on the characters (Martin Beck series) created by Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo. Cilla has a novel being released in July of this year, Spring Tide, that has had rave reviews. I pre-ordered the book and cannot wait to read it.
The only story I thought perhaps did not belong in this collection was by Sara Stridsberg. Her story is more abstract & avant-garde. In my opinion it did not fit well with the crime writer theme and would have been better placed in a general collection of Swedish/European fiction.
When you read the stories in this collection, do not skip the author introductions before each tale. Many of them give insight into Swedish customs and clarify parts of the story that might otherwise be confusing to non-Scandinavians.
All in all, a wonderful collection and a great introduction to new authors.

A mixed batch, as short story anthologies often are. Several short tales, some mystery, some not, from several of Sweden's best crime fiction writers. I singled out a few I really enjoyed, and intend to find some of their (translated) novels.
Tove Alsterdal's 'Reunion,' in which four middle-aged women get together at a secluded camp where they used to gather as teenagers. Creepy, slightly supernatural - or not - it's a great story. I am def. looking up some of Alsterdal's translated-to-English novels. (Or learning Swedish, she's that good!)
Ake Edwardson's 'Never in Real Life' where a man gets 'what's coming to him' in an unexpected and very original way. Just liked the 'matter of fact' writing style, which comes through even in translation. Need to read more by him.
Inger Frimansson's 'In Our Darkened House' which deals with two woman, one young and one older and how one achieves the revenge she feels she deserves. Problem with this might be the translation as I often wasn't sure who was who - who was talking or whose thoughts were being revealed. But overall, liked it very much.
Anna Jansson's 'The Ring,' which is cleverly plotted, about a boy being bullied - and yet the story really isn't about him! I already have one of Jansson's few translated novels on hold at my local library.
Johan Theorin, 'Revenge of the Virgin' was very atmospheric: men out on boats, in a fog or in a storm, a small deserted island. And btw, the 'virgin' is neither male nor female. I won't forget this one.
Veronica von Schenck's 'Maitreya' is very topical and complex. Involving archaeological artifacts stolen from Afghanistan. Her MC is the daughter of a famous auctioneer, but much to his dismay, his daughter goes into police work. Fascinating.
So all in all, a good read, (with a few rather dull tales), but these I've mentioned were outstanding.

This collection of short stories was a real treat for me, a devoted lover of Nordic noir, as there is a number of very important Swedish crime authors taking part in the anthology, edited by John-Henri Holmberg. There is also a story written by the late Stieg Larsson, author of the notorious Millenium trilogy, titled Brain Power, which is perhaps the best in the book. Furthermore, the reader has the opportunity to indulge in the work of well-known writers of the crime fiction genre such as Tove Alsterdal, Rolf & Cilla Börjlind, Malin Persson Giolito, Anna Jansson, Eva Gabrielsson (Stieg Larsson's lover and partner for more than 30 years), Johan Theorin as well as a Henning Mankell and Håkan Nesser collaboration in which the two detectives, Wallander, and Van Veeteren, meet each other and have a small interaction. I also enjoyed the story under the title The Multi-Millionaire by the godfathers of Swedish crime fiction, Maj Sjöwall, and Per Wahlöö. It goes without saying that A Darker Shade will appeal to the many Nordic noir aficionados and I would also recommend listening to this anthology in its audiobook version which is perfectly narrated.

Bound to happen, I found a new author who I really liked. Veronica von Schenck was one in a anthology of crime writers. She hit my weakness and wrote with the fascination of history, artifacts, and solving problems. But what I like the best about her was that she quit her job. I also liked Anna Jansson and the story with Detective Captain Maria Wern and Stieg Larsson's tale of the athlete and his body. All the stories were excellent.

Finding a book by Swedish detective authors in my hometown library (which, in fact, is the size of any kindergarten library) I call a success. Understanding that I should have read the book in Swedish to really get everything from it is not so overwhelming. Don't get me wrong - the translation was good, even better than good, but still - what is the point of knowing a language if I read in my mother-tongue?
Aside from the guilt I felt over reading in Lithuanian, the book was fun. A lot of short stories were very strong and I think I found some new authors to read.

Fantastic!
This is a fantastic anthology of original stories by some of Sweden’s greatest crime authors. Although most of the authors were unknown to me before reading this book, I have recognized a few.
I am a big fan of Henning Mankell and his Kurt Wallander series. In this book he teamed up with Swedish author Hakan Nesser in the short story An Unlikely Meeting. Mankell’s Wallander and Nesser’s Detective Veeteren, meet each other for the first time, in a diner on Christmas Eve.
And a seventeen year old Stieg Larson is the author of Brain Power. A story so good, you forget it is written by a teenager.
And Maj Sjowall and Per Walloon, introduces us to “an ugly American,” in The Multi-Millionaire.
During my reading of this book, I enjoyed so many of these stories that I tried relentlessly to find more work on the writers. But unfortunately, most of them do not have their books published in the U.S. or translated into English.
During my search, I did find a few new Nordic authors to read, and l am looking forward to enjoying their work. So this book not only gave me the utmost enjoyment of reading these stories, but it has helped me find new authors to enjoy. I happily give this book five stars ⭐️.

Den här antologin köpte jag 2014, inte bara för att den sas innehålla hela svenska deckareliten utan även för att den säljs till förmån för Sveriges Stadsmissioner. An anthology of Swedish writers that brings you gems from the established greats and wellknown translated authors but also shows less familiar and interesting ones who would have a great deal to offer if their work was widely available in English.
I really enjoyed Åsa Larsson's "The Mail Run" and Johan Theorin's "Revenge of the Virgin". But the quality of this book is the background information on the writers and their work. So the biography and short stories from Veronica von Schenck and Katarina Wennstam have piqued my interest and whet my appetite for more - please.

An interesting collection of stories though I could have done without the teenage output of Stief Larsson. But once again, I can't get enthused about short stories.

As is the case with most collections, this one was a mixed bag. It seems like the authors were chosen because they more or less shared the same political bent (radical leftism) than anything else. That was pretty annoying; I don't really care about author politics but I don't want to know them, either. Some of the stories came off as sanctimonious or just downright depressing.
My favorites were:

"The Mail Run" by Asa Larsson - historically set during 1912, but apparently a departure from this author's usual work
"Maitreya" by Veronica von Schenck - a short story introducing the character of Stella Roden

As with most short story collections some were quite good and some were only OK. There weren't any real stinkers in the lot. The authors gave a synopsis of the works of each writer and somethng of their personal history as well. Anyone looking for a new Scandanavian author would probably find someone to try out in this book. The title says "A Darker Shade..." and some of the stories are pretty noir so be warned.

These short stories by the best crime writers of Sweden were a mixed batch. I guess I was expecting short mystery stories and some of them just didn't make sense. Several of them just seemed like stories the characters were relating about some experience in their lives but not particularlly a mystery. Some were quite enjoyable and I now have more names of Swedish authors to investigate.

Начну с самого главного, рассказы в сборнике разношёрстые, есть очень хорошие, есть откровенно скучные и написанные на откуп. Поэтому какие-то рассказы у меня оценены высоко, как отдельное творчество к сборнику никакого отношения не имеющие. А сам сборник оценён нейтрально, потому что он не целостен, переход от одного рассказа к другому не выглядит единой цепью, звенья разные, плохо скрепленные, порой распадающиеся, это не единое литературное пространство, это сборная солянка, есть можно, но красоты сборника объединенного единой идеей нет, так можно самостоятельно насобирать рассказы по принципу что-то шведское, как собрал их тут составитель.
А теперь уже потыкаю в детали. Вступительное слово составителя или инициатора сборника хоть и интересное, но неполное. Он сам же пишет:
Дальнейшая беда сборника, что увлеченный шведскими детективами и авторами Джон-Генри Хольмберг (составитель и автор вступительного слова) забывает, что он знакомит читателей с тем, что для него как дом родной. Нельзя просто собрать тех, кто тебе нравится, нельзя просто собрать рассказы какие есть, нельзя просто написать анкетные справки про авторов, причем почему-то дважды и повторяясь в информации перед рассказом и в конце рассказа. Нужно уметь выбрать то, что привлечет человека к знакомству с целым пластом иностранной литературы. Я сомневаюсь, что мы с англоговорящей публикой настолько разные, что им достаточно накидать всего в банку, и они будут сразу говорить вах-вах, хочу все знать. Нет, они, как и я, отметят для себя парочку интересно написанных рассказов и не попытаются узнать больше. Потому что именно так и составлен сборник. возможно у составителя в голове все было четко и понятно и он видит переходы, но лишь потому что он еще что-то знает, что нам не сказал. Если брать сборник - как "узнайте просто много разных новых имен", то он работает, узнать можно. Если как - "полюбите шведский детектив", то нет, это не работает, дальше того что есть никто не пойдет.
Первые рассказы из сборника очень правильно выбраны для читателей из США, тут не поспоришь, учитывая, что у них главная рассказчица Shirley Jackson, но мне как читателю они показались самыми слабыми из всего сборника, мне кажется наши составители, могли бы чуть изменить порядок рассказов, учитывая наши литературные пристрастия, учитывая, что мы росли на Чехове, а он скорее любил сарказм, чем вот все то, что нам дают первые рассказы сборника. Дальше чтение идет бодрее, потому приходит именно дела, именно действие. Не надо кучи внутренних и внешних подробностей, чтобы мы начали чувствовать напряжение в происходящем и следить за этим, не отрывая глаз от текста.
Aldrig i verkligheten (Оке Эдвардссон - Никогда в реальной жизни) - тут нет интриги в том, что произойдет в конце, но как же красиво выстроен рассказ, как постепенно раскрываются герои. Как постепенно внешняя картинка заменяется той темнотой, что оказывается реальностью. Это очень красиво! Именно этот рассказ и подтолкнул читать дальше, подсказав, что там могут оказаться действительно драгоценные камни для любителя детектива, а не вот это все новомодное с открытыми концами, недосказанностями и всем остальным, что только разочаровывает такого читателя как я.
И да, там оказались прекрасные рассказы, если так можно сказать о рассказах, которые рассказывают о том темном, что творится в душах людей. Не обязательно о шведах, в этом и есть прелесть хорошей литературы, когда ты узнаешь людей, и тебе неважно в каком это месте и в какое время происходит, потому что эти люди могут быть везде. Такими рассказами оказались как раз "В нашем тёмном доме" Ингер Фриманссон, "Последнее лето Поля" Эвы Габриэльссон (почему-то кажется, что я читала его раньше, но никак не могу вспомнить при каких обстоятельствах и где, но читать, заново вспоминая детали, было интересно и опять захватывало!), "Алиби для сеньора Банегаса" Магнуса Монтелиуса, "Мультимиллионер" Пера Валё, Май Шёвалль.
Были и просто рассказы, неплохие, но не так чтобы к ним вернуться или автором серьезно заинтересоваться: "Что-то в его взгляде" Дага Эрлунда, "Будь со мной, хранитель мой" Малин Перссон Джолито, "Грешник проснётся с опозданием" Катарина Веннстам. Темы у рассказов хорошие, важные, но написано обыденно, нет всплеска в тебе как в человеке, чтобы погрузиться в них глубже, все что авторы рассказали ты и без них знаешь и тем что такое есть в мире тебя не радует. Ну вот вы посидели с автором и поохали и каждый развел руками. В рассказах нет разрушающей ноты, того надрыва, чтобы заставить читателя еще раз подумать, еще раз посмотреть увидеть нечто иное, понять что-то важное. Рассказы как повторения одного и того же, мы это уже знаем, мы не знаем что с этим делать. Авторы в принципе тоже.
А о некоторых хочется сказать пару слов отдельно. Например, "Кольцо" Анны Янсон - это интересное расследование, но структура рассказа комканная. То от лица мальчика. то от лица девочки, то немного автора, немного воображения, немного настоящего и в конце получается что было прошлое, а мы находимся в реальности. Все эти перескоки немного мешают красоте хорошо продуманной истории. Если Анна Янсон пишет так свои большие книги, то можно изпсиховаться читая так написанное.
"Почтовую доставку" Осы Ларссон стоило бы добавить в перечень прекрасных рассказов, но это скорее все же повесть и она не о наших днях, а о прошлом. И как же прекрасно автор подала историю своей страны и города всего на нескольких страницах. Она умудрилась передать зиму, почти полное отсутствие солнца, отчаяние женщины, маньячное желание быть в центре внимание мужчины, она передала, как живую, картинку испуганного мальчика. Наивность людей того времени, как не сложен был процесс для доказательства виновности и оправдания. Эта живая повесть, живые люди. Это совершенно отдельное произведение от всего, что есть в сборнике, хоть и объединяется по жанру, но оно все же скорее о том, что в людях есть свет, если разогнать тьму, то обязательно будет свет.
"Супермозг" Стига Ларссона это тоже отдельное произведение. Потому что это научная фантастика. И с одной стороны, рассказ про темные души, вот только не Швеции. С другой, довольно сложно его утрамбовать в ряд детективов и триллеров, как и рассказ "Дневник" Сары Стридсберг, это уже как некая художественная биография о последних днях Евы Браун, хоть имен и не называется, но догадаться будет несложно, и да, рассказ написан очень хорошо, в нем ощущается жизнь, дыхание, вот только я не хочу понимать любовь Евы Браун.
Есть еще один рассказ, который, похоже, написан скорее для поклонников, чем для рядового читателя - "Необычная встреча" Хеннинга Манкелль, Хокана Нессер. Тут прям обидно, потому что всегда интересно прочитать про встречу книжных героев из разных серий, да еще и их встречу с их авторами. Но нельзя просто написать, что они встретились, нужен разговор, мнение каждого хоть по какому-то вопросу. Тут ничего не было, просто встретились, просто сели играть в карты. Самое интересное во всем рассказе эта только вот этот момент:
Для меня вишенкой в сборнике был бы как завершающий рассказ "Месть Девы" Юхан Теорин, но как я выше писала, составитель с нашей стороны (надежды на Хольмберга и не было) не позаботился пересобрать сборник. С одной стороны вроде закончили важной социальной темой рассказом "Грешник проснётся с опозданием", но, увы, это не тот рассказ, который запоминается. Запомнился как конечный именно "Месть Девы". Он яркий, он диалектичный по выбору, он именно Швеция и он одновременно каждый уголок мира, каждый человек. Он вроде бы про недалекое прошлое, но выбор, стоящий перед героями - современный. Он не деталь современности, не боль малого кусочка общества, который можно отмести, если ты к этому кусочку не имеешь отношения, он о тебе самом, о том, чтобы ты сделал, как тебе с этим выбором жить. И при этом какая же легкость в написании. Летящие предложения. Не разлетающиеся, а знающие свою цель и именно туда и устремляющиеся.
И не могу не сказать о своей боли. "Майтрея" Вероника фон Шенк. Это не лучшее произведение сборника. Тут я признаюсь, что есть и клише и легковестность. Тут нет какого-то запоминающегося стиля. Это что-то похожее на все сериалы из Голливуда. Много картинки и не так уж много смысловой нагрузки. Она есть! Смысловая нагрузка есть, она просто не полномасштабно выставлена, не выстрадана как, например, в Грешнике. Нагрузка подавалась легко, жаль не так акцентировано как хотелось бы, но с другой стороны это рассказ-превью, показать героиню и заворожить ей. Не могу сказать, что я заворожена оказалась героиней, о нет, меня больше впечатлила тема - искусство. Героиня работает - экспертом по фальсификации. Да это же поле непаханное! Я хочу об этом прочитать. Мне это интересно! И вот моя боль. Ничего больше Майтрея у нас у автора не переведено. Я страдаю.
И подводя итог. Рассказы в сборнике интересные. Но вот сам сборник собран средненько. Ну и не всех представленных авторов можно прочитать на русском, если вдруг захочется прочитать у него что-то еще. К этому нужно быть готовыми.

Они поощряли членов движения выбирать профессии, которые позволяли бы влиять на других людей. Студенты становились актерами, учителями, социальными работниками, а также писателями и журналистами. Недаром Стокгольмскую школу журналистики прозвали «Школой коммунизма».И при этом не рассказывает о влиянии советского детектива на форму детектива шведского, а ведь это влияние должно было быть, учитывая откуда брать пример коммунизма, явно ведь не с США. Мы все узнаем о влиянии англоязычных детективов и триллеров, а о советском нет, хоть при этом, читая дальше о форме, видим схожесть невооруженным глазом: уход в размышления, в диалектику, когда на главный план выходит человек и общество. Это печально, учитывая, что человек рассказывает о развитии детектива и просто о каком-то куске ничего не говорит. Это как говорить об апельсиновом соке, начать рассказывать про деревья все-все, и перейти сразу к концентрату забыв рассказать о том, что для продажи апельсинов был привлечен видный рекламщик.
Дальнейшая беда сборника, что увлеченный шведскими детективами и авторами Джон-Генри Хольмберг (составитель и автор вступительного слова) забывает, что он знакомит читателей с тем, что для него как дом родной. Нельзя просто собрать тех, кто тебе нравится, нельзя просто собрать рассказы какие есть, нельзя просто написать анкетные справки про авторов, причем почему-то дважды и повторяясь в информации перед рассказом и в конце рассказа. Нужно уметь выбрать то, что привлечет человека к знакомству с целым пластом иностранной литературы. Я сомневаюсь, что мы с англоговорящей публикой настолько разные, что им достаточно накидать всего в банку, и они будут сразу говорить вах-вах, хочу все знать. Нет, они, как и я, отметят для себя парочку интересно написанных рассказов и не попытаются узнать больше. Потому что именно так и составлен сборник. возможно у составителя в голове все было четко и понятно и он видит переходы, но лишь потому что он еще что-то знает, что нам не сказал. Если брать сборник - как "узнайте просто много разных новых имен", то он работает, узнать можно. Если как - "полюбите шведский детектив", то нет, это не работает, дальше того что есть никто не пойдет.
Первые рассказы из сборника очень правильно выбраны для читателей из США, тут не поспоришь, учитывая, что у них главная рассказчица Shirley Jackson, но мне как читателю они показались самыми слабыми из всего сборника, мне кажется наши составители, могли бы чуть изменить порядок рассказов, учитывая наши литературные пристрастия, учитывая, что мы росли на Чехове, а он скорее любил сарказм, чем вот все то, что нам дают первые рассказы сборника. Дальше чтение идет бодрее, потому приходит именно дела, именно действие. Не надо кучи внутренних и внешних подробностей, чтобы мы начали чувствовать напряжение в происходящем и следить за этим, не отрывая глаз от текста.
Aldrig i verkligheten (Оке Эдвардссон - Никогда в реальной жизни) - тут нет интриги в том, что произойдет в конце, но как же красиво выстроен рассказ, как постепенно раскрываются герои. Как постепенно внешняя картинка заменяется той темнотой, что оказывается реальностью. Это очень красиво! Именно этот рассказ и подтолкнул читать дальше, подсказав, что там могут оказаться действительно драгоценные камни для любителя детектива, а не вот это все новомодное с открытыми концами, недосказанностями и всем остальным, что только разочаровывает такого читателя как я.
И да, там оказались прекрасные рассказы, если так можно сказать о рассказах, которые рассказывают о том темном, что творится в душах людей. Не обязательно о шведах, в этом и есть прелесть хорошей литературы, когда ты узнаешь людей, и тебе неважно в каком это месте и в какое время происходит, потому что эти люди могут быть везде. Такими рассказами оказались как раз "В нашем тёмном доме" Ингер Фриманссон, "Последнее лето Поля" Эвы Габриэльссон (почему-то кажется, что я читала его раньше, но никак не могу вспомнить при каких обстоятельствах и где, но читать, заново вспоминая детали, было интересно и опять захватывало!), "Алиби для сеньора Банегаса" Магнуса Монтелиуса, "Мультимиллионер" Пера Валё, Май Шёвалль.
Были и просто рассказы, неплохие, но не так чтобы к ним вернуться или автором серьезно заинтересоваться: "Что-то в его взгляде" Дага Эрлунда, "Будь со мной, хранитель мой" Малин Перссон Джолито, "Грешник проснётся с опозданием" Катарина Веннстам. Темы у рассказов хорошие, важные, но написано обыденно, нет всплеска в тебе как в человеке, чтобы погрузиться в них глубже, все что авторы рассказали ты и без них знаешь и тем что такое есть в мире тебя не радует. Ну вот вы посидели с автором и поохали и каждый развел руками. В рассказах нет разрушающей ноты, того надрыва, чтобы заставить читателя еще раз подумать, еще раз посмотреть увидеть нечто иное, понять что-то важное. Рассказы как повторения одного и того же, мы это уже знаем, мы не знаем что с этим делать. Авторы в принципе тоже.
А о некоторых хочется сказать пару слов отдельно. Например, "Кольцо" Анны Янсон - это интересное расследование, но структура рассказа комканная. То от лица мальчика. то от лица девочки, то немного автора, немного воображения, немного настоящего и в конце получается что было прошлое, а мы находимся в реальности. Все эти перескоки немного мешают красоте хорошо продуманной истории. Если Анна Янсон пишет так свои большие книги, то можно изпсиховаться читая так написанное.
"Почтовую доставку" Осы Ларссон стоило бы добавить в перечень прекрасных рассказов, но это скорее все же повесть и она не о наших днях, а о прошлом. И как же прекрасно автор подала историю своей страны и города всего на нескольких страницах. Она умудрилась передать зиму, почти полное отсутствие солнца, отчаяние женщины, маньячное желание быть в центре внимание мужчины, она передала, как живую, картинку испуганного мальчика. Наивность людей того времени, как не сложен был процесс для доказательства виновности и оправдания. Эта живая повесть, живые люди. Это совершенно отдельное произведение от всего, что есть в сборнике, хоть и объединяется по жанру, но оно все же скорее о том, что в людях есть свет, если разогнать тьму, то обязательно будет свет.
"Супермозг" Стига Ларссона это тоже отдельное произведение. Потому что это научная фантастика. И с одной стороны, рассказ про темные души, вот только не Швеции. С другой, довольно сложно его утрамбовать в ряд детективов и триллеров, как и рассказ "Дневник" Сары Стридсберг, это уже как некая художественная биография о последних днях Евы Браун, хоть имен и не называется, но догадаться будет несложно, и да, рассказ написан очень хорошо, в нем ощущается жизнь, дыхание, вот только я не хочу понимать любовь Евы Браун.
Есть еще один рассказ, который, похоже, написан скорее для поклонников, чем для рядового читателя - "Необычная встреча" Хеннинга Манкелль, Хокана Нессер. Тут прям обидно, потому что всегда интересно прочитать про встречу книжных героев из разных серий, да еще и их встречу с их авторами. Но нельзя просто написать, что они встретились, нужен разговор, мнение каждого хоть по какому-то вопросу. Тут ничего не было, просто встретились, просто сели играть в карты. Самое интересное во всем рассказе эта только вот этот момент:
– Это мы пишем реплики, – сказал низкий. – Так что, будьте добры, выйдите и войдите снова.Для меня как для читателя не знакомого с героями было досадно, что я не узнала больше о героях и авторах. Я только кое-что узнала о городке Маардам, что мне было бы любопытно о нем прочитать... Возможно это удача для писателя, по такому рассказу заинтересовать локацией, но ведь не героем, не своим творчество! Печаль-беда. Но поклонники Курта Валландера и Ван Веетерена должны были получить свой кусочек удовольствия от встречи с любимыми героями.
Официант с поклоном удалился, чтобы вернуться через минуту со связкой ключей. Снова поклонился и, откашлявшись, сказал:
– От имени хозяина ресторана я хочу пожелать вам счастливого Рождества. Можете пользоваться баром. В холодильнике есть нарезка. Пожалуйста, заприте дверь, когда уйдете, и опустите ключи в почтовый ящик.
Для меня вишенкой в сборнике был бы как завершающий рассказ "Месть Девы" Юхан Теорин, но как я выше писала, составитель с нашей стороны (надежды на Хольмберга и не было) не позаботился пересобрать сборник. С одной стороны вроде закончили важной социальной темой рассказом "Грешник проснётся с опозданием", но, увы, это не тот рассказ, который запоминается. Запомнился как конечный именно "Месть Девы". Он яркий, он диалектичный по выбору, он именно Швеция и он одновременно каждый уголок мира, каждый человек. Он вроде бы про недалекое прошлое, но выбор, стоящий перед героями - современный. Он не деталь современности, не боль малого кусочка общества, который можно отмести, если ты к этому кусочку не имеешь отношения, он о тебе самом, о том, чтобы ты сделал, как тебе с этим выбором жить. И при этом какая же легкость в написании. Летящие предложения. Не разлетающиеся, а знающие свою цель и именно туда и устремляющиеся.
И не могу не сказать о своей боли. "Майтрея" Вероника фон Шенк. Это не лучшее произведение сборника. Тут я признаюсь, что есть и клише и легковестность. Тут нет какого-то запоминающегося стиля. Это что-то похожее на все сериалы из Голливуда. Много картинки и не так уж много смысловой нагрузки. Она есть! Смысловая нагрузка есть, она просто не полномасштабно выставлена, не выстрадана как, например, в Грешнике. Нагрузка подавалась легко, жаль не так акцентировано как хотелось бы, но с другой стороны это рассказ-превью, показать героиню и заворожить ей. Не могу сказать, что я заворожена оказалась героиней, о нет, меня больше впечатлила тема - искусство. Героиня работает - экспертом по фальсификации. Да это же поле непаханное! Я хочу об этом прочитать. Мне это интересно! И вот моя боль. Ничего больше Майтрея у нас у автора не переведено. Я страдаю.
И подводя итог. Рассказы в сборнике интересные. Но вот сам сборник собран средненько. Ну и не всех представленных авторов можно прочитать на русском, если вдруг захочется прочитать у него что-то еще. К этому нужно быть готовыми.

Murder mystery fans in the United States had a passing acquiescence with some of Sweden's most popular authors of the genre. Maj Sjowall & Per Wahloo have had their work adapted by Hollywood, while Henning Mankell and some others had a reading fan base on this side of the Atlantic. Then, along came the juggernaut of the Millennium Trilogy from Stieg Larsson, and suddenly a much larger percentage of the American population became aware of the tradition of Swedish crime fiction.
A Darker Shade of Sweden collects 17 short stories from 19 Swedish writers. Some like the aforementioned Sjowall, Wahloo, and Mankell are already known on this continent. Others, such as Katarina Wennstam and Veronica Von Schenck are not yet available in America (unless one wants to order in their original language from a Swedish bookseller). (Aside: This IS a most unfortunate oversight – I checked several online sources for their works as soon as I finished this anthology and came up disappointed – and should be corrected as soon as humanly possible!)
I found myself intrigued by “Brain Power”, a short story by the late Stieg Larsson that originally “published” (if a few mimeographed copies qualifies for that word) in a science fiction fanzine. It skirts the “crime” genre covered by most other stories in this book, but it would be rather difficult to request a new story from the author at this date. On the other side of the same coin, the book contains “Paul's Last Summer”, the first published fiction story by Larsson's long-time partner, Eva Gabrielsson – which leaves me wishing she'd consider branching away from her preferred non-fiction works a little more often! PLUS, after reading “The Mail Run”, the Asa Larsson novel that has been sitting in my to-be-read pile is getting rushed towards the top of that infamous list so I read more from this fine author.
I was a little disappointed in the selection of Sjowall's and Wahloo's “The Multi-Millionaire” - although, like Larsson's story, it does reflect the authors' social leanings AND it is also a little late in history to request a new story from these talents. In addition, while Sara Stridsberg's “Diary Braun”is an intriguing little story, telling the tale of a well-known historical event from a most unique vantage point, it didn't seem to be a good fit with the other stories in this book.
This is DEFINITELY worth the read. Like most anthologies, the stories within are of varying quality and interest – which, since everyone's tastes are different, can mean different things to different readers. I found the “HITS” to be much more prevalent than the “MISSES” and am glad I invested the time in this collection.

Nuestra cultura vive un extraño romance de atracción/repulsión con el crimen desde hace siglos. En su historia de la literatura negra británica, Daniel Cohen señala que ya desde el siglo XVIII los periódicos dedicaban un espacio sustancial a la así-llamada “nota roja”, mientras que personajes tan ilustres como el mismo Benjamin Franklin participaron en la práctica de componer y cantar baladas sobre crímen y castigo (algo de lo que el estadista luego se avergonzaría). En México, la tradición del corrido dió voz a una visión de la muerte donde, como escribe Gabriela Nava, “el valiente se la gana, los criminales y los bandidos se la buscan.” No por nada, criminales como Barbanegra, Jesse James, Al Capone o Pablo Escobar se han vuelto también personajes de nuestro folklore. Según ha escrito recientemente Marc Hogan, la costumbre de ver en cierto tipo de criminales y delincuentes unos anti-héroes rebeldes tiene raíces muy profundas. En vez de provocarnos repugnancia y repudio, no es raro que a veces veamos al criminal como un rebelde que desafía la autoridad de la ley a través de la imposición de su propia voluntad, o que veamos a los actos criminales, no como un horror abominable, sino como un símbolo del nihilismo propio de nuestro sistema capitalista.
Y si bien esta romantización del crimen se encuentra muy extendida en occidente, ella ha adquirido matices distintos en diferentes tradiciones y diferentes contextos. Después de todo, no es lo mismo escribir sobre crimen en un contexto de paz y propseridad que en uno de carencia y tensiones sociales. No es lo mismo hablar sobre actividad policiaca en un contexto de corrupción y impunidad extremas, que en un contexto en el que las instituciones policiacas son fuertes y cuentan con suficientes recursos para llevar a cabo su labor de manera eficaz. Es por eso que la literatura negra mexicana es tan distinta de, digamos, la estaodunidense, la rusa o la escandinava.
Desde el siglo pasado, Suecia ha desarrollado una nutrida tradición de literatura negra, la cual explotó en años recientes gracias a los mas de 60 millones de ejemplares impresos de la serie Milelenium de Stieg Larsson a lo largo del mundo. En su estela, docenas de autores escandinavos han encontrado un lugar en miles de libreros dentro y fuera de la región nórdica. Según el filósofo y teólogo finlandés Risto Saarinen, las características peculiares de la manera en que se escribe sobre crímen y castigo en Escandinavia se deben a la extraordinaria paz y justicia que se viven en dicha región europea. En décadas recientes, mucha de la literatura sobre crimen en Suecia se ha caracterizado por su intensa crítica, de tintes populistas y, a veces hasta facistas, al estado de bienestar social que se vive en ese país escandinavo. Detrás de cada historia se deja leer un comentario sobre la insuficiencia del estado de bienestar para erradicar el mal entre sus ciudadanos y sobre la necesidad de aumentar la disciplina y la vigilancia. Sin embargo, a partir del trabajo seminal de Maj Sjöwall y Per Wahlöö a finales de los sesenta, también existe una tradición literaria de literatura negra de izquierda, la cual, en palabras de John-Henri Holmberg en su introducción a El Lado Negro de Suecia, se escribe “desde la perspectiva de los oprimidos”, critica “los fuertes lazos entre el sístema jurídico y el poder político” y examina “los factores sociales y económicos que fomental la criminalidad”.
Los géneros negros, la novela de detectives, el thriller psicológico, el hard boiled, etc. suelen considerarse géneros menores dentro de la literatura, entre otras razones, porque suelen contar historias con una línea muy clara entre“buenos” y “malos”, nos permiten regordearnos en explícitas descripción gráficas de violencia, y favorecen estructuras lineales, donde la reconstrucción racional y causal de los hechos es lo más importante. Como señala Holmberg, la estructura lineal, el heroísmo, el moralismo y el romanticismo hace mucho tiempo que dejaron de estar de moda dentro de lo que se considera literatura y es por eso que, para muchos, estos géneros difícilmente merece el nombre de “literarios”.
Al mismo tiempo, sin embargo, al ubicarse en el espacio de las causas y las razones, esta literatura arroja también una luz única sobre nuestra naturaleza humana. Cuando el personaje de Adam, en “Una coartada para el señor Banegas” de Magnus Montelius se lamenta “¡No, por favor, no!, dime que no es cierto” el horror que sentimos emana de saber que, en circunstancias similares podríamos haber sido cualquiera de nosotros quien sintiera esa misma culpa, quien quisiera convencerse de que sólo fue un accidente. Montelius es extremadamente vago en su caracterización del personaje – apenas un apellido y una descirpción muy superficial de su trabajo – precisamente porque no importa. Precisamente porque cada decisión que toma, cada una de sus acciones, obedece a la lógica implacable de causas y efectos, de creencias y deseos tan humanos que son universales.
Así como se dice de la pornografía que distorsiona nuestra visión de la sexualidad humana, también se ha dicho de la literatura negra que distorsiona nuestra visión del crimen, la violencia y el sistema de justicia. Al ofrecernos historias compactas, donde las acciones y los sucesos de articulan causalmente entre sí como engranajes de un mecanismo preciso, nos dejan con la impresión de que vivimos en un mundo balanceado, donde a cada crímen le corresponde un castigo; a cada acción, una reacción, y detrás de cada suceso, hay una razón, un porqué. El reto que ahora enfrenta este tipo de escritura, no solo en Suecia sino en todo el mundo, es el de abrirnos los ojos a las complejidades éticas, morales y políticas que de hecho afectan a qué llamamos “crímen” y a qué “justicia”.

Some of the stories in this collection are awesome; some too dark and gristly for my taste. We listened to the audio version on two road trips (13 hours of listening, about one of which was a fascinating, though Very Long introduction that had the feel of a dissertation about it. But still, we both liked the collection, overall, and got to take tastes of authors we had yet to find on our own. Plus there were some of the old standbys that were fun to find again.

Poviedky nie sú úplne môj štýl. Navyše od týchto som mal trocha vyšie očakávania. Čakal som temnejšie severské prostredie, dostal som chladnejšiu severskú klímu. Niektoré boli ale naozaj fajn, niektoré sa naopak vôbec nepáčili. Takže priemer...

While browsing in person at the library....I came across a book of 17 Swedish authors-one My Favorite-Steig Larsson(The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) who have written short stories. I even found some NEW authors to investigate.

poviedky mám v poslednej dobe veľmi rada, hlavným plusom je, že keď čítam večer pred spaním tak väčšinou stihnem prečítať jednu celú, kým už nevidím na stránky... niektoré boli lepšie, iné také priemerné ale celkovo ma to bavilo a neľutujem, že som si knižku nakoniec kúpila :)

El libro contiene un amplio y variado panorama de la literatura negra sueca contemporánea. Está muy bueno para los amantes del género nórdico en general que buscan descubrir nuevos y no tan populares autores en el mundo hispanohablante.

¡RECOMENDADISIMO PARA TODO SEGUIDOR DE LA NOVELA NEGRA SUECA!
El libro es una compilación de cuentos de los autores más conocidos del género literario de la "novela negra". Además se puede ver la diversidad de relatos y diversas formas de narración de cada autor. Un ejemplo de ello, es un cuento inédito del mismísimo Stieg Larsson. Escrito durante su adolescencia y publicado en una revista, "Super Cerebro" es un relato de ciencia ficción que tiene en sí las bases de los futuros trabajos del escritor sueco: Un deportista de renombre es elegido para albergar en su cabeza el cerebro de un connotado cientifico, el desenlace del cuento es frío y crudo, pero les toca a ustedes leerlo.
Otros relatos que recomiendo del libro son los siguientes:
* Le gustaba su cabello
* El Trineo de Correos
* Un encuentro Inverosimil
* Algo en su mirada
* La Venganza de la Doncella
Otro aspecto positivo del libro es la introducción. Te explica de forma clara y consisa la historia de la "novela negra" y su evolución durante el siglo XX. También destaca que el apogeo de este género se debe la saga de libros hecha por Maj Sjowal y Per Wahloo, donde ellos agregan no sólo elementos de investigación, hay aspectos politicos y hasta sociologicos en sus personajes.
Este libro te entrega la oportunidad de conocer otros autores aparte de Stiegg Larsson, Camila Lackberg , entre otros.

Desde hace varios años mi interés por Suecia aumentó, así como también mi interés por la novela negra, entonces cuando vi este libro, fue amor a primera vista, el título atrapó mi mirada y después vi el nombre de Stieg Larsson y Henning Mankell y ya con esos caí, pensé que no habría libro más perfecto, me di cuenta que era una recopilación de varios relatos de los autores suecos más importantes de este país, así que decidí comprarlo, lo empecé con mucha emoción, sólo que el primer relato no fue muy interesante, continué porque ya quería leer el de Stieg Larsson (autor de Millennium) y el de Henning Mankell, que por cierto, son los únicos autores (suecos) que conozco y que he leído pero a lo largo de estos relatos me encontré algunos interesantes y otros no tanto, pienso que le faltó algo a esta recopilación, claro que el relato de Stieg es lo más atrayente porque es un cuento nunca antes publicado y por primera vez traducido del sueco al inglés (en este caso al español) pero aún así, recomendaría este libro especialmente a gente interesada en el género, de otro modo lo encontrarían tremendamente aburrido.

Es conocido que en Suecia la literatura nacional tiene un predominio en lo llamado Novela Negra y con muchos autores conocidos mundialmente tanto actuales como de época que quizás por problemas de distribución no fueron muy conocidos en sus tiempos, pero que son personajes representativos de el género negro) que representa a Suecia.
En este libro nos encontramos con 17 relatos de Autores reconocidos de este género, así mismo nos dan una pequeña introducción de cómo fue creciendo el género negro y los estilos que este mismo abarca.
Si bien son buenas historias, algunas de ellas no lograron atraparme y me dejaron un poco a la espera de más, pero es interesante ver el estilo de escritura de los diferentes autores para no estancarse en un solo estilo.
Todas las historias aquí presentadas son publicadas en este libro por primera vez, algunas de ellas fueron escritas específicamente para el libro y otras fueron historias que se publicaron en revistas y eran poco conocidas.
Las historias que más me gustaron fueron:
*Supercerebro de Stieg Larsson
*Maitreya de Veronica Von Schenck
*El Anillo de Anna Jansson
*Nunca en la realidad de Åke Edwardson
*Algo en su mirada de Dag Öhrlund

Piacendo molto i gialli di stampo nordico, ho preso questo libro perchè trovavo molto intelligente provare a vedere quali autori mi sarebbero potuti piacere per un acquisto futuro , quali non mi sarebbero potuti interessare e quali ovviamente confermavo, senza spendere soldi per ciascuno di esso . L'esperimento è però riuscito a metà : se da un lato alcuni racconti mi hanno intrigato, sarebbe stato intelligente ( almeno a livello di marketing ) tradurre questi autori in modo da poterne acquistare i romanzi, soprattutto perchè non ha senso decantare l'autore X o Y con l'elenco dei premi se poi in Italia non traduci nulla o porti il libro più letto ''alla sagra dello stoccafisso'' ma non quello che è stato premiato come miglior giallo svedese dell'anno, ed io parlo a più di 10 anni da quando questo libro è stato pubblicato . Quindi meh, troppo abbastanza sciocco farmi vedere le potenzialità di qualcuno e poi dirti ''gne gne gne, imparati lo svedese e parti per la Svezia ''.
