Animal Cruelty
This is another great Yorkshire Murder Mystery but this one focuses on illegal dog fights and the harm done to dogs fighting for their lives. We learn more about Harry and his team members. The focus of the Harry Grimm mysteries are the interrelationships between the staff as mysteries are solved. I find that it makes the mysteries interesting and hard to put down once you start reading the book. David Hayward hasn't lost his touch. This book is just as good as the previous ones if not better, which is saying a lot. I'm recommending that you read all 7 books in the series not just this one.

Another great read
I chose this rating because like all the other books in the series, this is a fantastically good read. Once again Harry is amongst the low life and taking them down. If you like the other books in this series I know you'll like this one. Harry is such a great character and he has really made it in the Dale's. I don't know much about the area these books are written about, I live in the South East on the coast, but the author really brings it to life. Roll on the next book

Blood Sport : A Yorkshire Murder Mystery ( DCI Harry Grimm Thrillers 7 )
Blood Sport by David J Gatward is book 7 in the DCI Harry Grimm series and each book, whilst having its own storyline, just gets better. They are a really good read, with excellent characters and the scenery is terrific.

DCI Harry Grimm is now the permanent DCI for their small community, and he feels he’s finally settling right in. So, when a friend and local calls Harry in the middle of the night, upset at finding blood and the signs of a fight he’s not worried about the lack of sleep. Only all indications of the crime scene indicate there’s a ring of dog fighters and Harry knows too well how insidious – and dangerous – such criminals and actions can be. Will they be able to stop things before they get out of hand?
I’ve been really enjoying this series and found this book to be a solid addition to it. While there’s quite a few smaller plots that are linked in to this dog-fighting ring I feel readers who haven’t read any of the previous stories should be able to follow along quite well without any problems. Those of us who have read the previous installments however should be very happy – I was thrilled that quite a few of the previously unsolved issues got cleaned up in this book and felt quite satisfied with how those plot-arcs were resolved.
There is a fair bit of character growth in a number of Harry’s team in this book and I found it overall a really well written and interesting book. I was pleased to see this progress and feel it will likely make a lot of other readers happy too. I was glad the animal scenes weren’t too gritty and there was no titillation in these scenes – no graphic descriptions of abuse or cruelty to animals and indeed I was very pleased that the police are shown as taking this kind of cruelty and criminality every bit as seriously as abuse and damage to humans.
Readers looking for a country feel but still strongly police procedural and mystery solving story should absolutely try this series. Personally, I feel the books are better read in order, but I think they can be read out of order and still enjoyed.

Another thoroughly entertaining trip to Wensleydale and so far the best Harry Grimm novel. That's not only because David J. Gatward has gotten better at spinning a proper mystery, although there were some early pointers to who might be involved in this novel's criminal shenanigans, but also because the topic is quite unusual.
Without wanting to give too much away, Blood Sport deals with a sort of despicable criminal behaviour that isn't usually adressed in crime fiction, namely animal cruelty. You can tell that this is a topic that is important to the author and it certainly makes for an interesting diversion from the classic murder mystery stuff.
Once again, there is also that great sense of place that Gatward has always been good at coveying. On top of that, he focusses even more on some of the side characters than before, if you can even call them that anymore. We get POVs from several of Harry's team members as well as the usually rather grumpy pathologist who it turns out has more in common with Harry than both of them probably realise. The different viewpoints keep the series fresh and help to flesh out the characters so that we can really start connecting with them.
While some characters behave a bit stupid towards the end and some future plot points might already be guessed at, I'd say that Blood Sport is an improvement to the series on every level.

Blood Sport is book seven in the DCI Harry Grimm Crime Thrillers series by David J. Gatward. DCI Harry Grimm was called to a crime scene by a friend in the middle of the night. DCI Harry Grimm did not know what to expect. However, on arrival, he revealed that someone was organising dog fights in his beautiful Dales. DCI Harry Grimm and his team started investigating and got more than he bargained for. The readers of Blood Sports will continue to follow DCI Harry Grimm and his team to discover what happens.
I enjoy reading books in this series, and Blood Sport did not disappoint. I engaged with the story and the characters of this book from the first page. I love David J. Gatward's writing style and the way he portrays his characters and their interactions with each other throughout this book. Blood Sport is well-written and researched by David J. Gatward. I like David J. Gatward's description of the settings of Blood Sport, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.
The readers of Blood Sport will learn the meaning of necropsy and their role in finding out what killed the animal. Also, the readers of Blood Sport will understand the consequences of illegal puppy farms.
I recommend this book.

A little flat but I still enjoyed the story mix of humour and hard police work, character development continues enhancing the sense of community moulding the stories of a lovely area of the uk. Was getting a little worried that the 'cake and cheese' would not be in the story, 2 thirds through there it was.

The best yet
This series just keeps getting better, I absolutely love it. The stories are always good and interwoven and the characters are just brilliant. The settings and the descriptive writing are wonderful, you really feel like you can smell the countryside. I couldn't put this book down, lots of twists and turns that kept you turning the pages. It looks like Grimm has truly settled in the Dales and even now has a dog and dare we hope that a new romance is brewing. I always feel at a loss when I've finished a book in this series and can't wait till the next one. Thank you for this fabulous series.

Wonderful writer
Mr. Hayward definitely loves the dales, & his writing is a labor of love, fortunately for us, the readers, by a gifted writer! It's all perfection , from the character development to the storyline..... I'm just grateful that I stumbled across the first book of the series. Now I'm hooked!

I love Red Tailed Squirrels!
Another fabulous read. So many twisty bits going on you didn’t know who was doing what! I love how each books brings in bits and bobs from past books. Not like some authors that write everything about everyone from other books taking much time away from the current story. David also adds in new bits as we get to know the crew. It was great bringing Rebecca out into the story. I like her character.
Mr. and Mrs. Sewell moving to the Dales but not wanting any wildlife on their property is hilarious. When a sheep ends up in their upstairs bathroom drinking from the toilet I was dying of laughter!
I love the humor that David adds into all his books. While they are serious crimes and sometimes gruesome murders, his way of adding humor and lightheartedness is fantastic. He also does a wonderful job with describing the Yorkshire Dales. I’ve never been but after reading this series it is definitely a place I want to visit.

I enjoyed the story and mystery. I felt it was easy to figure out who the culprit was, but finding out how all the pieces of the mystery fit together was a fun ride.

I am a dog person. I love dogs! So, this book hits just a little bit too close to home!

I whinged on a review of a previous book in this series that there was an element of predictability in the book. Well, here it is again. I saw who the perp was a mile away. However, I do not begrudge this series for this because it gave me hours of reading pleasure! It brought the rating of the plot a bit down, though.
Another thing, aren't police is supposed to be trained to notice signs and symptoms of abuse?! Because it is pretty obvious to me. Why can't PCSO Jim see it? I saw this "stupid" element before in previous books. Then it kinda faded away and I was happy with this series. However, here it is again... Let's just hope that it is not here to stay!
Obviously Aubrey Parsons was reading a slightly different manuscript to the ebook sold to me by amazon because the ebook and the audiobook didn't always match. Like on location 227 of 330 of the kindle ebook, the ebook reads "Anna" while I hear the narrator saying "Alice". The ebook was right by the way, because the vicar's name is Anna.

Hot Dog

Ok, loved the book. However I need to go back a few books.
When the sheep were stolen from Jim’s parents farm, and it was mentioned that he was out with his friend Neil, I knew then that Neil was involved. I was disappointed that at the end of that book Neil hadn’t been arrested.
Then to this book. When Jim went and visited Neil’s parent and during the chat, Mr Hoggs mentioned the treehouse and Neil going in there. I knew that he had his something in the treehouse. I thought it might have been a book detailing what he was involved in. Never thought it was a phone.
Then when they went over the events that happened to Jack the spaniel that belonged to Arthur(?) I believe that’s his name, it only made sense that it was someone the dog knew. So, when Jim was at the vets office and his dog Fly was so relaxed with the vets, I knew it had to be a vet that had taken Jack!
However I was torn between Andy and Toby. Then when Mr Peacock was introduced I knew he was involved. His whole attitude the way his wife was afraid of him etc. And the things he said and how he treated Jim I knew he was involved. I just couldn’t put my finger on how everything went together.
But in the last two chapters I figured it out. I’m glad Mr Peacock was arrested. But I wanted him to be the head of the whole thing so he could get the most amount of time and his wife could escape from him. I’m glad Toby was caught, and that they were able o shut down the organization. I also hope that in the future there’s a recap where EVERYONE involved up to the top man was apprehended.
I can’t remember if Reedy was the small time drug dealer from either book 1-2 or if Reedy was the rich guy who had invited the Hoggs over for dinner. Or the guy that had attempted to steal Fly, Jim’s dog out of his car. Next time I’m going to take notes so that when I do the review I have all the names correctly.
All in all I loved the book!!! I wished it hadn’t taken a couple of books to close the storyline of the sheep stealing and Neils’s death. However I do realize that it had to be drawn out to make it the conclusion that it was.

Trigger Warning: Graphic Descriptions of Extreme Animal Cruelty and Neglect
DCI Harry Grimm is slowly settling in with his new team in the Dales. He's a transfer from Bristol and he finally getting used to having a team who cares about his welfare and living where there's a strong community spirit.
However, like anywhere there are people, there are those who do horrible things. In this book the violent world of dog fighting and gambling are part of the big case. A local gamekeeper's dog is stolen, but is later found dead, literally ripped apart in a barn in an isolated area. That starts the search for the powers behind such an evil enterprise in the heart of farming country.
Again, the descriptions are graphic and detailed as is all the narrative in the books in this series. It's odd how, for some reason, the cruelty to the dog is as moving, if not more so, than the murders in previous books.
I'm glad they found the culprits and that they sewed up some loose ends from earlier cases.
I also like the character development we see in Harry Grimm. He's finding connections and that's something that apparently has been absent from his life before arriving to live in a whole new world.

Just finished reading Blood Sport book 7 in the DCI Harry Grimm series by David J Gatward
This storyline about animal cruelty certainly got the emotions going & think it was handled very well by Mr Gatward, although the criminals in my view would have suffered very badly 🤣
I've read all of the Grimm series in sequence and I was hooked on this series from book 1
The characters have all developed along the way along with their individual personalities. Grimm's own demons from a previous career gradually fade into the recesses of his mind as he adjusts over a period of time not only to living and working in the Dales but gradually coming to respect and care deeply for the members of his team.
Through each successive novel it becomes obvious that Grimm cannot now imagine moving away from the Dales. Harry's personal life is now also beginning to move forward from the lonely soul he once was.
The whole series flows, so too the dialect, easy reading, storyline twists & turns and thrilling finishes as all the threads of information come together.
Oh & not forgetting he's on a date & he's got a PUPPY 🤣📖😊🐾

Blood Sport is the 7th in the Harry Grimm series-- all of the sagas set in the bucolic Wensleydale region in the north of England. By now (7 books in) Harry is well adjusted to life in the Dales and has even started to accept, if not like, cheese on his cake-- of course in the tradition of Wallace and Gromit-- Wensleydale cheese. The sense of place in these tales is central to their appeal. And the strong character development- by now we're so very well acquainted with the team of local constables who are under Harry's command. This tale touches on the unsavory world of dog fighting, such an unlikely intrusion into the quiet life in the dells. A murder, good veterinarians and bad vets, and loose ends from previous threads are tied up. Very readable, low key enjoyment in these police procedurals the locale as central of a character as Harry the gnarly faced Grimm.

This series is one of my favourite finds of the year. To say that I am invested is a severe understatement. Harry Grimm is one of those characters that you cannot help but fall in love with. Despite his spiky, ornery demeanour, he is just misunderstood. He believes that he is Grimm by name and grim by nature, but that could not be further from the truth. An army veteran (medical discharge) he joins the force in Bristol, however, his maverick attitude and lack of rule abiding soon has him sent to "coventry" out of sight, out of mind. He is seconded to the Dales, as far from his comfort zone as possible. However, the Dales are magical, and Harry soon becomes to love it there, including the Wensleydale on fruit cake. Each book is fabulously written, the characters are amazing and you cannot help but fall in love with them and the Dales. One of my favourite series.

DCI Grimm Goes To the Dogs
I have read books 1-5 in this series led by a detective with a scarred face, but a Nobel heart. I read mysteries and thrillers but many contain too much gore and cursing. This series is centered in remote British rural areas where the pace of life is less hectic and hurried. The plots are simple, uncomplicated and focused on likable characters and often poetic narration. Through character development and scene settings, author Gatward focuses on the lives and dramas of a squad of detectives who love their English dales and their rural neighbors. The books were pleasant and quick reads and I enjoyed the break from more jaded books of this genre. LNM

Wonderful series.
Another strong book in the Harry Grimm Yorkshire murder mysteries. The characters are well written, warm and very likeable, the setting descriptions make you feel like your there and the grim subject matter of this book is written about with sensitive care. When I first started reading about it, I was worried about the rest of the book but the subject is touched on rather than written in detail, which was a relief. Some threads from previous books were nicely tied up and all in all, a fantastic read! 2 things at the end have made me most keen for the next one, can’t say for spoiling, but it’s exciting!

Another brilliant story with all sides of humanity. Thr scenery, the descriptions of normal people who live their lives in the Dales, the plots, everything. This one got to me especially, as it's about dogs and animal cruelty. No vivid and cruent descriptions, no useless gore, and I appreciated that very much. David Gatward managed to convey the misery and the pain, ugliness and anger about it all without having to describe in uselessly crude detail what was happening. Being a dog mom of four rescues myself, a general animal and nature lover and vegetarian I shed more than a tear reading, but it is a very good story, and I will go straight on to the next instalment in the series.

I like this series. The regular characters are interesting and the stories are good. This one may scare people off because of the dog fighting (it’s right up front.) But the story is about the people involved in the crime and not the crime itself.
The reason this didn’t rate ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me is the simple fact that I lost track of the suspects. I sometimes feel listening to the audiobook (done very well, by the way) that I get the characters confused. Maybe that’s just my old brain acting up. But the ending was a bit less than satisfying because of that. Just me.
I like Grimm and I like the pathologist. Some day???

Love this series!
This whole series is fast paved and easy to read, and this book is no exception. I read it pretty much in one sitting, its that good!! The characters are all warm and likeable (the main ones) and they work well with reach other. The plot was so interesting, I was truly vested in it without needing to read all the gore! Thank you for that! And Harry got a puppy and a date all in one book, miracles really do happen! Keep them coming, can't wait for the next one!

Unflinching and Superbly Written
I unashamedly admit that I've become totally hooked on the DCI Harry Grimm series. This particular novel deals unflinchingly with several horrific aspects of the consuming evil that is animal cruelty, abuse, and exploitation. Plus, loose ends from prior books get tied up in a most satisfying manner. And how can you not respect and admire a stand-up guy like Harry Grimm, or the stellar folks of which his team is comprised? I can't wait to read episode 8!
