Poems About You is a collection for anyone who has ever loved with everything they have. It is an ode to unrequited love, fleeting romance, love lost and everything in between. From 2 a.m. cheesecake when your heart is still seventeen to breaking up and recommitting fifty different ways, Brynn Ellen beautifully captures one of the most powerful parts of the human experience.
"I highly recommend this collection to fans of modern poetry or poems about romantic love. The best poets know how to reach down deep and pluck out the messy bits, stitch them together, and present them to us. And at its best, poetry has the power to heal and connect and make us feel, deeply, all the things. And Brynn has done that with her debut collection. I laughed. I teared up. It transported me to moments in my past with people I used to know. It's a beautiful message of genuine connection. I cannot wait to see what she releases next." - Author Christopher M. Tantillo
Brynn - it was such a pleasure stumbling on this little book of poems. There were quite a few in there that resonated with me. Your vulnerability, humor, and love are powerful.
“Poems About You” is the debut poetry collection by Brynn Ellen. In this collection are poems depicting scenes and themes of love. First love, falling in love, losing love, and connecting with others. It’s about romance—the beautiful kind, the ugly kind, and everything in between.
What Brynn captured here were moments so beautifully. It’s the moments that make up a feeling or an emotion or a memory. Whether it’s the feeling of a lover’s touch, or the weight of the words they say or don’t. The thoughts we filter or don’t. The way we show our love and accept it from others. Some are nothing more than a moment in time. It’s in the way a partner breathes, or sighs, or shifts the weight on their feet, and the ways we interpret or obsess or spiral. I loved the snapshot of memories here. Some are so raw and honest; others are whimsical and deeply funny.
Another thing Brynn does so well is changing up the types and lengths of poems. Some follow typical rhyming structures; others are a bit more free-form. Jumping from poem to poem flows well, and the varying lengths help to break up any monotony. The only critique I had was, I wish there was a little more play with the format. We get typical stanzas here and there—we get a sonnet toward the end—but most are formatted the same. I think it would be interesting to see her play with spacing or indentation more, or switching up the format here and there to add more variety in how each poem appears on the page.
In an opening note, the author stated she wrote these based on a challenge to write a poem a day, and each poem reflects what she was feeling on that day. And that is so evident here. You can really see growth in these poems, as it feels like they tell a non-linear story of sorts, making the reader have a more enriching experience.
I highly recommend this collection to fans of modern poetry or poems about romantic love. I think everyone in here can relate to at least some of these poems. It’s a beautiful message of genuine connection. I cannot wait to see what she releases next.
As the author notes: if you’ve ever loved or been loved… these poems are about you.
