A Lightbringer has crept into our realm, slithering in before the deadline, with brand-new sinister plans. Chloe must face her past, her deepest fears, and survive a trek through the darkest depths of all the realms to get her true love back.
And Dwayne ... well, let's not spoil his story. Although the "King of Chaos" has a nice ring to it.
A raving fangirl for all things paranormal, supernatural, supernormal and fantastical, Lauretta writes fun Urban Fantasy, PNR and Superhero adventures with a dash of sweet romance and humour.
She's a massive fan of Young and New Adult fiction, loves a plot twist, hates cliffhangers, and always keeps her readers on their toes.
When she's not writing, Lauretta enjoys fad diets, sunshine, her two little children, weird craft projects and massive amounts of dark chocolate
I was a fan of the previous books but this one didn't do it for me for a plethora of reasons. This is a novel that you will enjoy if you are attached to the characters and want closure more than an actual good book with solid plot. Spoilers ahead!
- Stupid decisions: Chloe stupidly attacks the Savior by herself in Chapter 4, which results in Alaar having to come and save her by sacrificing himself. She's like "why did you fight him he's stronger than you"...girl why did YOU fight him!!
- Messy plotline: The plot jumps all over the place which can sometimes be executed well, but in this case it gave whiplash because each plot point was so erratic and brief. It felt like she just jumped all over the place stumbling her way through each situation. I felt like in previous books she would do a lot but it would feel well-paced and there was still a main focus. With this, there's too much and the reader gets lost.
It felt like the author knew this was the last book and just wanted to wrap up a bunch of plotlines so everyone got their ending. In fact most of the book was about that more than the Lightbringers plotline that was the focus of the previous 3 books!?
-Unsatisfying resolutions: In addition to the messy plotline, it felt like every "resolution" was just luck or a series of random events. It didn't feel like much active problem solving on account of Chloe's so-called fighting skills or intelligence. There definitely wasn't really a plan or strategy that resulted in their resolutions more so just things happening, which made it feel like the reader was just getting dragged along the action. For a so-called prophecy chosen one, this felt extremely anticlimactic.
Malik and Chloe: The last book was great because we finally got Malik and Chloe to get together. If you're looking for more of that you might be disappointed. He's gone for a majority of the book bc they're separate while Chloe goes on her silly little side quests. And when he returns, he ends up sacrificing himself and dying. And no he doesn't come back to life, it turns out she can summon him at night. What the heck, barely a happy ending to be honest!
Cheesy humor: So this is a running theme in all the books which I overlook because whatever it's sort of camp but it's too much and entirely groan worthy in this book. On top of the silly plot line and convenient resolutions, the book came across as incredibly rushed and juvenile.

The first 80% of the book felt like a list the author was ticking off. It was perfunctory with a wierd alice in wonderland vibe that just screamed FILLER and I couldn't help thinking that the author had just run out of steam or passion for the series.
Fortunately it recovers at the very end of the story but I was really disappointed after the other excellent books in the series.

this book was such a rush job. everything was thrown together, people who had no business showing up were thrust into my face, plot lines were quickly resolved and forgotten, the pacing was off with the book trying to distract us with other realms for most of the book and everyone has a quick goodbye and send off. this was dumb. i feel cheated. i knew it was suspicious when all her other series were 6 book arcs and this one was only 4. dumb.
Maybe it’s been awhile since I read this author but this book was… kind of a mess. It felt so jumpy and basically Chloe goes around tying up all the loose ends- Sarah, Jeb, Nathaniel- and the Vampire Queen. I know these books are goofy but this just wasn’t enjoyable for me. Maybe she’s wrapping up all the connected series in one? It was so disjointed and the whole battle against the Light bringers felt anti climactic …. And barely part of the story.
She goes and tells off her ex centaur and he ends up adopting Jeb? What?
Chloe the tough assassin is now bumbling around ineffective Chloe. There’s little with her and Malik and the end is not Hea in my opinion- and … yeah. Not a good book.

If I say I WAS DYING to read this book, you'd probably have thought, pffft, right...but I REALLY WAS! This series has captivated me from the very first book and each book gets better AND each book gives me the wow effect AND there's Dwayne! Oh, he's a goose BTW. No, not your garden variety, THIS goose is....ummmm....rather hungry. One of the very best animal sidekicks I've come across. To adore him is second nature the moment you meet him! And Chloe! Oh boy do I love Chloe! She has the whole world on her shoulder, she honestly does! There's this prophecy that somehow involves her, even if she denies it vehemently. Her entire life is gearing towards... something. As she tries to come to terms with it, her friends, her absolutely amazing friends, are the glue that keeps her together. They rally to her in her moment of need, and trust me, there were LOTS of moments! The love and caring they extend to her is something she could never have imagined. She was a loner, an assassin and has put all that behind her. Even those she swore she'd see the end of, come to her aid.
Alaar is an enigma, his character so well hidden, so when some of his truths are touched on in the beginning of the book, I was as shocked as Chloe. He was instrumental in turning Chloe into the hardened assassin, for her father no less, Alaar's cold, seemingly uncaring, rather cruel methods had Chloe swear to herself that she would, one day, end him. And here's the thing, Ms Hignett stacks the odds against the 'baddies' that I relish the idea too! Except... I can almost hear her gigging 'aha, got you' when she pulls the rug from under me. Yes...she made me CRY for Alaar, it was like a punch to my gut! Characters? My golly these characters have been carved into my very DNA! Daphne, Jeb, Nathaniel, the Countess, Sarah.....the fleeting appearance of Prue, all of them!
The action in this book is brutal and fast, right from the onset. The Lightbringers, beings who are supposed to be pure and good, well, let's just say, not ALL of them are! Which led to an... altercation... which led to Chloe getting trapped in another realm... which led Chloe to Amelia... which led them both into the hands of a crazy Prince.. What a hoot Amelia is! My word does she have a mouth on her, I was equally laughing at her sass, while applauding her! Heck though, while Chloe is being plonked from realm to realm, the clock is ticking on earth, the Lightbringers are entrenching themselves, spewing their 'purity', just rubbing their hands in glee as they inch closer to taking over. But she's thrust around the universe like a ball, facing danger and challenge after challenge, not a friendly well behaved doggie playing catch scenario, oh no, it's Fae, it's dragon's (well sort of...), it's centaurs, all kinds of nasties she has to contend with! And still, tick tock... tick tock! She HAS to find Malik, she HAS to find the missing gods, she HAS to stop the Lightbringers. That is what the prophecy declared!
I love how the author took a goose and made him exceptional! You don't believe me? I promise, you ain't ever seen a goose like Dwayne! And then Ms Hignett ratchets it up by declaring WHAT and WHO he is, well heck, my jaw just dropped! A gorgeous series, full of drama, angst, regrets, incredible friendships and a need to right a wrong. And the romance, oh boy, the romance is so delicious! I feel in love with Malik just as much as Chloe did, I FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS SERIES! Fabulous fast moving plot, interesting and completely diverse characters, gods, mortals, different realms all coalesce into a spectacular read, a fun read. I laughed so many times, I cried too and was heartbroken a couple of times but by the end, my heart was singing with joy!
When I wrote the review for Prue's last book, I said it should be called "And it gets worse". Well, this one could be called, "Oh, the Places She'll Go!" The time is really running short - Chloe needs to get home, but it seems the universe has other plans for her.
I loved this book, especially Prue's latest manifestation! We get to see a bunch of characters from Chloe's past and from the other series. If you've wondered where Dr. Herd has gone and what he's been up to, this book has the answers for you!
I was sad to get to the end, because I've read practically nothing but Lauretta Hignett books for over a month and a half. I loved them all and hope there will be more series in this world. I would love a series from Cindy's point of view or Daphne when she gets older!
I found it extremely difficult to get through this book. It was all over the place. I kept skipping ahead, trying to just grasp key points, to get through to the end. Sorry to say I was disappointed.
I have loved every one of the books in this series so far but the conclusion of 'The Waif in the Wilds' series may be the one exception.
I'm rounding this book review up to three stars but overall, I wanted more magic, more feisty Dwayne, more grumpy Malik, and more self-assured badass Dani.
Yeah... last books are hard. This was a mess, though.
I laughed three times. Every time because of Dwayne. I love that goose.
But what even happened here? It seems that Hignett forgot what the main plot of this series was. It wasn't bringing up old characters that those of us who haven't read the other series haven't even met. Given that they don't play an active role in any of this series, there was no place for them using up most of this book. It was a disaster. It felt like I missed several books between the last book and this one. The whole story was off.
Barely any time was spent on the light bringers. The resolution was rushed and anticlimactic. It ruined everything.
Honestly, if I had known it would end like this, I wouldn't have read it. The first three books were great, this one completely missed the mark.
HOLY HELL this was one action packed rollercoaster ride and a totally fantastic conclusion to the series. I have to say I spent the majority of this book biting my nails in anticipation of what was happening and yes I'll admit there were a few tears shed along the way but it was definitely worth it.
After being thrown into a slipway by The Saviour, Chloe finds herself travelling through the realms to get home. She is on a countdown to prevent the Lightbringers from coming through the portal and destroying all life and taking the world for their own. The characters that she meets along the way are awesome (I haven't read the previous series so they were new to me, but I'll definitely be reading them now) some are old friends, some old enemies.
The humor was top notch balancing out the darker moments throughout the story, and again I had a few WTH moments of things I didn't see coming. If it's at all possible I loved Chloe even more by the end of the series than at the beginning, and the end was just so FREAKING PERFECT I was a complete mess. Dwayne my delightful murder goose still had me in fits of giggles as well as having a few surprises up his wings too, I'm sure gonna miss this feathered wonder. Best sidekick ever.
So it's with a heavy heart I have to say goodbye to my loveable monsters but I know I'll have this series on my reread list. Again I can't recommend these books high enough, so if you wanna be enthralled with a goose that makes sculptures from bones along with his human go read these today. Loved it 😁
Oh Lauretta, my Lauretta! Words can not explain how I feel about this book. Not only was it wonderful, well written, and exciting, but it tied up so many loose ends and little things we've all wondered about. So, thank you so much for this. Now on to my thoughts and no spoilers. This NEEDS to be read and experienced. Chloe returns in an epic conclusion. Set immediately after the last book, it picks up with her seeing a Lightbringer coming through the Nexus. This starts a chain of events, a whirlwind of activity, that never stops. We meet friends, old and new, and some enemies from other series get their comeuppance in a glorious fashion. Lauretta truly does not disappoint in this. She has come so far in her craft, and it is an honor and a pleasure to see it and know her. We also, FINALLY, find out all about Dwayne and his story. He is my new spirit animal buddy. This was a long time coming, and the reveal makes a ton of sense. Daphne plays a huge role, and she is a glorious little psychopathic little deviant. Nathaniel finally comes into his own as well. It is wondrous to behold. Seriously, the action and story never stop, and you will be hard pressed to put this down. 11/10 and highly recommended for anyone who loves sass, snark, action, a little smut, and a whole lot 9f feels. Thank you, Lauretta, for such an outstanding world and characters. I look forward to the next WIP you do.
The time has come, the last pieces of godhood need to be repatriated to their own dimension, or the lightbringers will conquer the Earth. One Lightbringer known as The Savior has already come through the portal, causing chaos, and Chloe is fighting against time to save the world. Unfortunately for her, The Savior doesn’t want her to succeed, and it means that Chloe has to fight her way to the finish line…
Prophecies are answered, lines are drawn, and poor Chloe has to go through a lot to get her happy ending. Fortunately she is surrounded by her friends, and fans of the author will enjoy seeing more than a few old friends from other series in this book! Most of the loose ends are tied up in this story, as Chloe and Malik find their last few pieces of godhood amongst the residents of the town. It’s not an easy journey though, but I enjoyed watching Chloe clear everything up- not bad for a human!
This was an engrossing series, the killer goose Dwayne was by far my favourite character; and I truly enjoyed the humour and often over-the-top nature of the story. This was a fast paced finish to the series, building upon all the other books that went before (NOT a standalone) and ending with a good resolution. An enthralling series for the urban fantasy and contemporary fantasy readers out there.
It's amazing Lauretta Hignett could wrap it up like she did! Wow!
Poor Chloe! She's the chosen one, but she's human. The book starts with her first battle against the Lightbringer who calls himself the savior, and she only made it out alive because he was distracted. But not distracted enough to allow her to stay in Castlemaine, or earth to get in the way of his plans.
Set off into the realms, she has to make it back before the deadline to find the rest of the fractured gods and return them to the wilds before the deadline, or all the worlds will pay!
That's big stakes for an human, even one that was a premier assassin! Luckily she has friends, and Dwayne (the alien + goose).
Along the way she gets the chance to heal her own self, but I'll let you read the deets and see how she makes out! It's brilliant as usual!
I have to say, that each series of Lauretta Hignett's I read, that MC is my favorite. That is an amazing gift by a very talented writer!
You want to read this series, it's high action, smoldering romances, great and unique storylines, and you know that the heroine will kick butt!
Sorry it's over, but can't wait to see what the next series will bring!
What a conclusion! It feels like all her series have been leading to this ending! The rogue Lightbringer has come through the nexus and taken Malik back to the creator world. Chloe is alone and must save the world. But as she comes to realize, she is not alone. Thrown into a slipway, she travels through many dimensions, finding friends and allies in every one along the way. And once she is back in Castlemaine, can they send the missing siblings back in time to save the world? Can they defeat the Lightbringers? I love getting to read about some of my favorite characters from all the other series. Amelia, Mavka, Prue and Sandy. And after being pregnant with twins myself, massive props to Sandy for inter dimensional travel when ready to deliver! And Dwayne! My wonderful Dragon sized chaos goose!! He is such a murderous little monster, but I love him so much!! And psychotic Daphne is a close second!! And Chloe, she finally realizes she is not alone. That she is a perfect balance of sweet Chloe and assassin Chloe. I will definitely miss Chloe, but look forward to whatever Lauretta writes next!

Savage Demons (The Waif in the wilds book 4) by Lauretta Hignett is a 5 ⭐️ read. Let me just start by saying Holy F**king Heck this book was brilliant!! I’ve been reading this authors books for a little while now and have yet to come across anything that puts me off about her books, there’s always a crowd of back up characters where you will want to read their stories too. In this last book in the series 😢 Chloe knows time is ticking to find the last of the missing gods to send home before the lightbringers come to earth but one has already sneaked through and Malik has gone the other way, so Chloe is not only fighting to save earth but to bring the love of her life back. (I’ve written this so many times and deleted it because I was giving away too much from the book) I highly recommend this series (please start with the Immortal series) if I could give more than 5 stars I would. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
I honestly don’t know if I wanna cry happy tears or sad tears! I’ve fallen in love with Chloe and her crew. And this really is the best book yet. Everyone came together in a way I wasn’t expecting. Actually, most of this book and the plot twists, I was not expecting at all! Love the surprises. Chloe goes on a journey, and she’s alone. But that little adventure needed to happen for Chloe. She needed to forgive herself. She needed to put all the pieces of herself together for things to become better. It’s been amazing. I truly thought she’d fully lost Malik. I also can’t believe Mav. But there’s more than just one happy ending. And I gotta say, I teared up more times than I could count. This whole series has me completely enamored. Plus we get to see Prue!! And Amelia literally makes me giggle lol. Do yourself a favor- grab this series. It’s so unique and amazing!
Wow. Just wow. I just finished this book, and boy was it so full of action, my head is still spinning. I think this was probably my favorite book yet…but I think I say that after every book. LOL! Anyway, as a series ender, this last installment was everything I could have hoped for and more. I enjoyed every moment of all the books, but this one is poignant with…well, I can’t say as I don’t want to spoil it. I loved all the characters so darn much, I’m really going to miss them, especially Dwayne. I know that the next series by this author will be as good, and I’m hoping it’ll come soon because I’m mourning this one. A well-written, heart-wrenching, action-filled series ender that will please fans of this series. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
What a wild ride this 4th and final installment of The Waif in the Wilds series was! Non-stop action, start to finish. Laura Highnett kept me on the edge of my mental seat the whole way, and I loved it.
While there is one main threat hanging over Chloe's head the whole time, the pace and intensity are really kept by the series of back-to-back problems that she must solve along the way. And the way that they intertwined current and past issues and co-stars was both ingenious and enthralling.
If you haven't read the previous books in the series, go back and start from the beginning. You won't get the full thrill ride of this book if you don't, plus you definitely won't be sorry when you read the earlier instalments.
Thank you to Lauretta Hignett for my copy of this ebook. All opinions are my own.
A fantastical conclusion to a fantastic series!! This series had such great world building - such a varied Universe to contend with... and survive!!
Chloe has had the most complex and poignant character evolution I've read and has survived one heckuva life - from one extreme to the other. Yikes! I really cared about her. So many great characters surrounding her! I loved the way the old crowd was brought back. The world the author has created - starting with Imogen - and the way it has built upon itself is fascinating. She did a most excellent job weaving it all together.
I love this inventive and suspenseful series and look forward to what Lauretta creates in the future. A banana. A skeleton. A goose. What will be next?!?
What a wild ride! Chloe is trying to prevent the Lightgivers from coming through the portal and destroying the world by taking it over. Her allies have disappeared or died and she is sent into the other realms. There she finds more problems, new friends, old nemeses from previous series and new information about the problem. This is full of interesting characters, Dwayne, the goose, is amazing. Jeb, Sarah and Daphne are pretty amazing in their own ways and we see changes in them. As with a lot of fantasy books, Chloe is up against overwhelming odds with interesting action. There is a lot of humour in this book as well as violence. This was a great series. Worth recommending at any time.
This finale surely doesn’t disappoint!! In their mad scramble Chloe ends up pushed into a slip stream by the Savior. Finding herself in a dark nothingness, she wanders aimlessly, forgetting who and what she is. Eons pass as she wanders before she remembers something and starts using her voice. As much as she doesn’t quite believe, she hears another voice in the darkness. Thus begins an epic journey through the levels of hell as well as other realms. All,do Chloe’s friends join in the search to find her before time runs out and the Lightbringers descend upon earth to begin their destruction and find their missing brethren. Man, that last battle is epic! You can’t miss reading about it! I totally recommend you finish off this great series with Savage Daemons! !
Chloe goes on a magical journey trying to stop the end of days. Malik has been dragged back to the Wilds so Chloe is alone unsure how to proceed and how she will.ever defeat the lighthouses alone. Luckily she is not alone, all her friends from before she arrived in Castlemaine and since are all determined to everything they can to help her fulfil the prophecy. Times running out thought.................... I finished this series happy Chloe got her H.E.A. But disappointed I wouldn't be reading more of Dwayne, Daphne and Nathaniel so what fun to learn Me Hignett has given Daphne her own series and of course her uncle and best friend will be part of it........................
Oddly dull, compared to the rest of the series. Chloe seemed kind of empty - hollow in a way she hadn’t been in the other books. As if once she found twue wove, that was all that mattered.
I don’t much enjoy travelogue style stories. "What I Did on my Summer Vacation" — I went here and there were big flowers and there was as dark tunnel — boring.
Like all the characters were on sticky notes on a Kanban board, just waiting to get moved to the Done/Resolved lane.
Disappointing because the other books were kind of cute.
Plenty of overlap with other series by this author, but not a lot of real playtime with the characters in THIS series. Bouncing from world to world was difficult to take in and seemed worthless in the overall crux of the story. Plenty of "Times running out" situations then we sit through pages of how horrendous the Purgatory realm is. Sort of a conclusion with Malik but far from HAE. Maybe we'll revisit all these characters in the next book series about Daphne? Series for me - overall a 3.
When Chloe is navigating her way through pastures new, each journey is so well written you can really feel each aspect of where she is. When Amelia joins her I was howling at her antics and what comes out of her mouth. This book tied up every characters story, it gives you the warm and fuzzies. I've loved Chloes series so much, I was gutted when I finished this book, I got a serious book hangover.
I have read three of the authors series so far. I read Peru’s story first by accident, loved it, then went to Sandy’s, then Chloe’s. I need to read about Imogene’s as she was actually the first. But they are good even out of order. Chloe does have it rough once the veil is lifted and she must reconcile her two extremes. I adore her and Malik’s verbal sparing and how she exasperates him and in the end loves him. I would read this again
Books 1 - 3 were fabulous!! Perfectly crafted. I have read some of Lauretta's other series. That is the only way I knew what was happening for most of this book. It's like she decided to wrap up all the other series in this last book. It was silly and confusing if you hadn't read the others. The very end of this book got back on track and ended well, but the first three quarters were disappointing.
This novel has very different scenes from the other books in the series. Chloe is meeting all sorts of people, old and new. The plots seem random and were written in haste. However, because of the different story lines, I like this one better than the previous two. In the end, every part of the story is described perfunctorily. It's good that this series only has four books, though. Otherwise, I would have wasted more time on it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
For the last book of Chloe adventure, it gives the impression the author didn’t have any idea and so Chloe went from world to world meeting all her friends until the final battle where she is only with the main characters of this serie. I was glad to have an ending to her relationship with with Oblix as it ends a little abruptly in Prue’s story.
As I already read Daphne story, I have the impression of missing a link of what happens between them. Did I missed a prequel?
