Verschwörung, Triaden und Schüsse auf den Präsidenten - Mit "Die Kugeln des Bösen"sorgt Chang Kuo Li für eine interessante Mischung. Ein Kommissar im Ruhestand und ein ehemaliger Scharfschütze müssen zusammenarbeiten und wenige Tage vor der Präsidentenwahl in Taiwan herauskriegen, wer in der heißen Phase des Wahlkampfs auf den Präsidenten geschossen hatte - der mit einer Fleischwunde davon kam. Viel dringender ist für das Ermittlerduo die Frage: Wer lockte den Scharfschützen Alex mit einer angeblich von Ex-Kommissar Wu stammenden Nummer an den Tatort, damit Alex prompt unter Tatverdacht gerät?
Das könnte ein Feuerwerk a la "Bullet Train" werden und hat auch zahlreiche spannende und dramatische Momente, doch gleichzeitig erzählt Li lässig und abgeklärt, ironiegetränkt und mit einem gewissen Augenzwinkern. In manchen Momenten ist das perfekte Gericht oder Gebäck wichtiger als der aktuelle Fall, dann wiederum philosophiert Wu mit Triadenbossen über väterliche Pflichten oder mit dem stellvertretenden Polizeipräsidenten "Eierkopf" über Ballistik und Kaliber.
Alex muss sich seiner Vergangenheit stellen, Wu angesichts seines im Koma liegenden Vaters den Fragen von Sterblichkeit und unausweichbaren Entscheidungen. Die beiden unorthodoxen Ermittler und ihre Helfergruppe legen sich bei der Suche nach der Wahrheit mit dem Sicherheitsapparat, Wahlkampfstäben und dem organisierten Verbrechen an. Also jede Menge Konfliktpotenzial, rasant zusammengefügt und mit einem Hauch Zen gewürzt.
"Die Kugeln des Bösen" sind der zweite Band zu Wu und Alex und immer wieder gibt es Bezüge auf den Vorgängerband. Da habe ich beim Lesen zwar gemerkt, dass mir einige Feinheiten entgehen dürften, dennoch gab es genügend Erklärungen, um beim Lesen nicht in Sackgassen zu stranden.
Nachdem ich in der Vergangenheit bereits fasziniert von noirmäßigen koreanischen Thrillern war, ist dieser Taiwan-Krimi ein weiteres spannendes asiatisches Lesevergnügen bei dem - so viel Chinesisch-Klischee muss sein - auch das Essen nie zu kurz kommen darf.

Comme pour le premier tome, j'ai vraiment apprécié le ton irrévérencieux.
Par contre, j'ai eu du mal à accrocher au récit dans son ensemble. Je ne suis finalement jamais rentrée dedans.

Almost one year ago, I promised you to grab the second book of Ai Li (mis)adventures as soon as it would be released in mass market paperback. As you're reading these lines, you already guessed I kept my word.
Quick acknowledgement : regarding the connections between the characters and the many references to the previous book, it's strongly recommended to read or re-read it before starting this sequel, or you might not understand everything. Impossible too to review it without spoiling a little some elements of the first book.
In real life, almost a year has passed since. Same goes in the book : Wu is now investigator for an insurance company, Ai Li illegally lives from his wok skills, dreaming to reunite with Baby who survived we-don't-really-know-how. Credibility : meh, but Ai Li already feels more than guilty enough, so we won't refuse him some hope, right ? Especially since he really needs it, because this time, he get trapped in even bigger trouble. After international politics, welcome to the local ones, dominated by foul moves and corruption.
The first book's plot was complicated, but well-wrapped and fluid. This time, it's just complicated, with many factions having close names, a shredded storytelling brutally jumping from scenes and characters, asking for some mental effort to recall who is who, and infiltration/disguise scenes where we just don't get anything, as if we were the clueless cops stalking them. But don't expect breathtaking action, if there are, indeed, a few scenes with delightful tension, we don't really feel danger as in the previous book. No mystery either : both us and the characters quickly understand what really happened, the only thing that matters is if, and how, Ai Li will get outside of this mess, helped by Wu (who isn't cop anymore), Lu (who got promoted) and Baby, whose miraculous recovery and romance are not the best parts of the story. A shame, because sometimes, we really do feel the potential of her complicity with Ai Li and her strong temper. Without asking for a romantic suspense, as she's important both for the plot and Ai Li, she deserved a better writing.
If we'll appreciate to join Ai Li in this actually good sequel and conclusion to both books (without totally closing the door for possible more books), impossible to blame those who won't read it to the end, as the atmosphere is so radically different and the pen heavier than in the first. Still a good thriller, but unfortunately not as good.

Belle petite découverte cet auteur que je voulais lire pour mon travail. Histoire policière bien brodée avec un complot politique, hélas, bien réaliste du monde actuel. J'ai apprécié le décor entre Taïwan et le Japon et ses personnages principaux.
Toutefois, quelques bémols. Un rythme un peu lent, surtout au début. Il n'y a pas énormément de moments d'action avant la moitié du livre.
Puis, j'ai l'impression qu'il a manqué des bouts à traduire, où que la traduction a été mal faite tout court. Certaines phrases manquaient de sens là où elle se trouvaient, la mise en page dans certains cas n'était pas correcte.
Bien entendu, cela n'a rien à voir avec l'histoire mais avec l'éditeur du livre. Ma ponctuation porte sur l'histoire et non sur ce point indépendant de la volonté de l'auteur.
