Iain McCaig is a highly talented and sought-after artist, capable of creating stunning illustrations full of life and creative style, yet this textless sketchbook doesn’t capture the scope of his mastery, seemingly lacking the intent to be anything more than an average publication.
Although it does feature some impressive portraits, movement studies and character designs, the lack of any written context means that this collection of mostly rough drawings is simply too lightweight, providing insufficient insight into the artist’s thoughts and imaginative process. McCaig is an engaging personality with plentiful information and instruction to share, so it’s a shame that this basic book doesn’t include any guidance for the viewer – an opportunity missed to add value to its content.
