Is it difficult for your child or students to maintain friendships? Do they understand that friendship is not just about having fun together but involves more? Do they understand what is expected of a friend? Do they know how to mend a friendship when they may have hurt their friends' feelings?
What Is a Friend and How Can I Be a Very Good One? is the 3rd book in the Making Friends! series. After teaching the four basic friendship skills in Book 1 and two more skills in Book 2, this book targets four more important friendship skills to help young children have a deeper understanding of what friendship is about - including respecting friends' choices, offering help, mending friendships when they may have hurt their friends' feelings, and more. Friendship is not just about having fun together! Young readers will take the perspective of the main character and learn these skills step by step following the story. In the end, social situations are provided for practice to reinforce the skills taught. This book brings four more friendship marbles for young readers to collect for their "friendship jar"!
The author has uniquely applied behavior science to children’s literature by using behavioral technologies and procedures such as Behavior Skills Training (BST) through instructions, modelling, rehearsal, and feedback.
This book was developed together with researchers, school teachers, early childhood educators, behaviour analysts, speech-language pathologists, many parents, and children!

Good moral to the story and easily understandable and fun
This is a great book to teach some important lessons to kids - not just to be good friends and what that means - being a good sport, respecting their choices, helping them even if it’s inconvenient. But also provides tools for kids when they make mistakes - as we all do - to fix the little conflicts between friends. It is also interactive in a way that allows kids to figure out how to solve problems themselves. It’s great stuff and kids will love it!
This is another great one from the author’s friendship series! I love that there’s mistakes that Connor committed, and then he went through a thinking process, and being led through a problem-solving map to come to a conclusion of what the best course of action is. There are a lot of feeling and emotions mentioned in the book, that helps little ones establish skills to express their emotions. Really love the book!
The illustrations are eye-catching and beautifully done all the way through.
The problem map is a brilliant idea and the whole story is a great way to explain to children about friendship.
I enjoyed reading this to my daughter, who went through this recently where her best friend started playing with someone else. It was a perfect way of explaining friendship. We will be reading this again and again.
This is a great book that teaches young readers how to care about their friends. The main character goes through different situations and figures out how he should behave to fix problems so that he could be a better friend. I like how the character also asked trusted adults for help, too. This is a good book that shows how to be a caring and respectful friend to others.
This books defines helpful and healthy ways to be a friend. Some of those ways include being a good “sport” and being okay no winning all the time. We have to make time and sometimes small sacrifices to simply “be there,” as a friend. Read this wonderful book to find out more ways to make a friendship last and stay strong.
This is a very useful tool to help young ones navigate their emotions and how to be a better friend. The marbles is an excellent visualization and way to connect the concept to the emotion. Highly recommend for children struggling to keep friends.
Navigating friendship can be challenging even for adults. This wonderful book is a great guide for everything from being a good sport to dealing with jealousy when a friend spends time with someone else. The illustrations are excellent as well. Recommended.
As a teacher myself, I wish I have had this book sooner so I knew how to better help my students fix friendships or conflicts at school. I read the book with my 6-year-old and we got to go over the maps. We tried to use the map to solve a real life issue and it really helped him visually see the choices and the consequences of different choices. Really helpful book! Would highly recommend it to teachers and parents!
