Rob may be the sheltered son of a crime boss, but it doesn’t mean that he isn’t every bit as commanding as his father – or as determined to make a life for himself that doesn’t involve waiting to see how long the feared “Shadow” will go before he snaps.
Finn is Rob’s cousin, as good as orphaned with a deadbeat dad and a murdered mother. Taken in by his uncle, cut off from normal life experiences, and given the responsibility of caring for his cousin, it’s no wonder that he’s developed an attachment that some might deem “unhealthy.”
When Rob discovers BDSM, he realizes that embracing the Dominant part of his personality feels like coming home. The only thing that would make it better? Convincing Finn that he is safe enough to take a chance on a love more dangerous than merely risking his heart…
This book is a romance novella, and the burgeoning romantic relationship between Rob and Finn is the focal point of the story.
Kady Stewart is the author of the new, steamy gay romance series, Fall.
When I was just discovering the idea of romantic love, my mother was very keen that I had a crush or relationship with someone "suitable". They needed to be from the right background and with the right personality to please her.
Unfortunately for her, that memo never really made it into my rule-book. I fell in love with the unsuitable types, and that's the basis of what I write today. I embrace characters with age differences. Mismatched species. Power differentials. Characters who are related a little more closely than some people find comfortable. Heroes who are twisted and dark, but do care deeply for their object of desire in their own special way. If you read my books, you'll see that...
This was probably my face throughout most of the book:
I just could not connect with this book for so many reasons, and it was just bland.
First, I had to suspend some disbelief. The backstory is that Rob and Finn's (our MCs) mothers were killed when a bomb was planted in a grocery store. This left Rem (Rob's father and Finn's uncle) in charge of the two boys. Understandably, Rem was living in a world of grief and rage. But so much so that he started a multimillion criminal organization in a span of 15 years that has its fingers in drug dealing, black market art dealing, and human trafficking???? Okay then...
Also, the pacing of this story was really, really srange... The start of the romantic relationship between the MCs...oh wait, we don't actually get that! What we actually get is Rob telling us that he and his cousin have had the hots for each other for a long time and have done nothing about it, then we have Rob telling us that he is a Dom, and then him telling us that he will get his cousin to be his sub. So, basically, he goes to his cousin, tells him that he is a Dom, and that he wants Finn to be his sub. And then he spews the textbook definition of what being a sub means at Finn. Finn puts up some weak protests and then, badabing badaboom, it is a week later and they have already had some scenes together.
Also, the writing was really stilted, awkward, and clichéd. It made it extremely hard to connect to any of the characters or get to know them at all. Unsurprisingly, we got a lot of the author telling us stuff (see above paragraph) and not showing us. The sequel should be coming out soon. I might check it out just to see what happens to the MCs... Well, it was a bit weird for me to read about cuz-cest, but the way the author wrote the characters and the story, I was able to put aside my initial "ewwwww", and just go with it. However, the story itself was not as engrossing as I'd hoped. The transformation of a normal loving dad into some sort of crimelord just pushed the limits of reality a bit too far for me. I didn't buy it. I probably won't be exploring any other books dealing with incest issues, but this one didn't squick me out too bad.
So... two cousins who grew up as brothers. The younger one wants to explore BDSM and takes the older one along for the ride. Yes they are in love, I think... at least they really want each other. Of course they happen to be the children of a homophobic mob boss... To be perfectly honest this story was a hot mess. There was almost no sex, fade to black BDSM scenes, an unbelievable premise, boring prose, no action, telling instead of showing, and a cliff hanger ending... wtf?
That was an interesting read. I really was captivated by the characters but it all ended way too soon. The bdsm element was kind of interesting. It didn't make or break the story, it was just kinda there. The story ends abruptly which is kinda annoying but still worth the read.
In some ways better than I expected, but only in some. As it wasn't an overly long book at lot of plot was just not fleshed out enough for me. It's a dreaded cliffhanger and the sequel has yet to be released. So whose at the bloody door?
Incest is usually my big Road Block, but I decided I would take a look at this one since it was about two cousins of similar age so did not have the pedofhile aspect nor the older strong figure imposing his/her will on younger innocent. I did not have the problem with the male cousins getting together. If it was M/F with kids in future, I would have due to the health concerns.
The premise was a bit of a stretch. Heart broken by the death of his wife by a crazy bomber, I could buy the revenge angle. It was the becoming a main bad guy in charge of a huge criminal organization that was hard to swallow. (Sorry for the pun --- no I'm not sorry.) The bleakness of their lives of course drew Rob and Finn together. It was that closeness that kept them sane throughout the madness that was their lives from small childhood. It was love that finally gave them some small happiness.
As they tried a Dom/sub relationship we were told of their heat, but I did not feel it. I felt for them but did not feel them. This effort was too short to touch all the possible story ideas to which the author alluded. I will read the next one as I was into them enough that I would like to know what happened. I hope the sequel will have more emotion and heat shown.
What happened to the rest of the book?? While the book focuses more on the nastier side of crime and a messed up father who was hell bent on revenge, Finn and Robby come through with the love. It might not be the main focus but you feel their love. I am wondering at what point Rem will realize that he is the monster that he tried to protect his boys from...ok now.. where is the rest of this book!!???
Rob's father was OTT crazy. I felt very little connection to either of the MCs. Rob just decides one day he's a Dom, tells Finn he's going to be his sub and basically that's it? No interest in going further in this series.
This novella is definitely different in how it starts, and it progresses well, ending on a cliff hanger. It is well written and though unusual in the setting, it cleverly introduces themes of BDSM and intertwined it with loyalty and morality.
I don't believe for a second a man loses his wife and sister in a grocery store bombing(C'mon son, for real?) Then becomes a serial killer/ criminal mastermind! Hey Kady Stewart, James Spade wants his Blacklist back!
Not a bad story at all. There were alot of things that didn't make sense to me, but for the most part it was pretty good. I do have one question, but keep in mind I read this while home sick with bronchitis, but at the very end who knocked on the door?
It was okay and had some good ideas there just was no follow through. This same story well written would have been a winner. Which is sad because Finn & Rob were interesting.
