The man who will become Alrekr Járnhandr is done. Weary, physically and emotionally broken, abused beyond the limits of what he can endure, he is ready to give up and die. But instead of dying, he finds himself drawn through a dark void to another world. Terribly injured, he is found and rescued by people among whom he will have a chance to build a new life.

His new world will be filled with wonders. It will be magical. It will finally give his life meaning. But it won't be easy, and he will come to discover that he has not entirely escaped all that he fled from. His past is not done with him yet ... and neither is his future.

But in this life, he won't have to do it alone.

Fireborn is an alternate-world fantasy novel featuring mystic arts loosely based on Finnish mythology, polyamorous relationships, and healing from emotional abuse. Have you ever heard of a smith who can mix advanced metal alloys by ear? In Fireborn , you will.

And yes ... there are dragons.

About the author

Sean Fenian

Sean Fenian is a generalist and open-source evangelist who is tired of several decades of working in the information technology sector. He is broadly knowledgeable in many subjects, with a long-standing informed layman’s interest in physics and related science in particular. He has been an avid reader of SF and fantasy since his teens, and first became aware of, and began campaigning on, environmental issues in the late 1970s. He is proficient with weapons both ancient and modern, has trained in four different martial arts, and believes that understanding basic firearms safety is like knowing basic first aid, CPR, or how to use a fire extinguisher. He firmly believes that it is a basic human responsibility to treat all beings fairly and decently, and that the true measure of a person is how you treat others.

His past volunteer activities include educational historical re-enactment, marine mammal rescue, and handicapped riding therapy. He has been formally diagnosed on the autistic spectrum, but stubbornly persists in trying to understand people anyway.

He dreams many things. Occasionally, some of them become reality. But only occasionally.

Great alternative fantasy

In the first chapters the author gives hope to all "henpecked" husbands praying for a change to get them away from their personal harpys and setting up the main character in the best wish fulfillment scenario!!!! Any guy would love the premise of this story! Rave over--- it is a wonderful sort of alternative History kind of story but as an alternative place not time travel, sort of like David Weber's 1630 series, with the older ways of the European northern countries in focus. The real story starts when he finds himself equipped with magical powers he must learn to use and become familiar with while starting a new kind of"martial arts " combining what he knew from his past world to what is used where he has arrived! These forms help combat the creatures that arrive in this new world in a way the same as he did! Very good character development you love everyone in the story! Was hoping for another in this series to see how the other characters continued with their lives!

wow

I'd read some of the author's other books, and was impressed. But this one is more than impressive. The story line is interesting, written in the first person as well as I've seen it done over 70 years of reading, and the protagonist's struggles and triumphs resonated. Part of me wished it was longer, but it is as long as it needed to be. Maybe we'll see more, but I'm satisfied to have been given this if there isn't.

Read, enjoy.

Worth reading

Don’t expect a cookie cutter fantasy novel, or a coming of age story, or a typical harem adventure.
Do expect a slow-start, deep thought novel that takes it’s time telling the story about a man lost and then found. And it uses a lot of Finnish and Japanese words, I just continue reading. There is a moderate amount of kissing and handholding and some physical love, but it’s natural. I enjoyed reading something different like this!

The best book of the year

I'm not being hyperbolic with the title. This is the best book I have read this year. Stop reading this review and go pick it up. You'll not regret it.

Two words of warning. One, there are parts that will hit you right in the feels. Two, technically, this has a harem. It is very artfully done. So, it should not offend anyone. It's very fade to black.

Highly recommended.

What is in a name? Everything.

Oh, I liked this a lot. As someone who is fascinated with words and language, the exploration of language of names relative to reality in a magic system makes for a great story device. The transformative Power of Love is no small thing and the author gives it full play to literally remake the protagonist, a man so broken and scarred physically mentally and emotionally as to be almost no longer human. A marvelous story.

A really different approach

I starred this book because another by the same author wasn't available (darn it!)...I thought it interesting and different. It may tie in to video games..I know nothing about that type enjoyment.
The book kept my interest all the way through to the end. I would like a following book, too! But not there!!
Another author to add to my faves!

More of a drama?

Ok so maybe I'm wrong but I was expecting something alot different from both the title and the synapse. The book seemed to be more of a drama with LGBT propaganda sprinkled in than a fantasy book with dragons and swords and cool stuff like that. Seriously disappointing. The cover is super cool at least.

Weeeb in finland

This starts great, then it turns weird, then it just becomes a weeb in fantasy land. This book he is involved in making the best soul bound katanas despite only having a basic understanding, I'm expecting next book for him to make them all custom fedoras to match

puerile tripe

I should have stopped with the preface. The author has created a work of mental self abuse without any redeeming qualities.

I’ll be trying to figure out how I can filter out any other works by this author from any future selections presented to me.

Epic combination of Finnish and Japanese core culture's with it's own unique elements. Worthy of comparison to Tolkien.

Decent enough concept author couldn’t get out of his own way, preaching, and complaining about society… didn’t really add anything to plot and made it rather annoying to read.

Fiction yet Not

This story is one I will be reading again and perhaps several times. Toss the limits and self imposed restrictions of your imagination aside. MFenian is that good!

One dimensional, simplistic fluff

The characters have no depth. Sentence structure would be easy for a 3rd grader to read. Good fiction has some practicality. The is void of any.
