This book is about a year in the life of a young man, by the name of Aghy McGowan. Aghy was born in the year 1898. His birth place was Manhattan’s Five Points neighborhood. The Five Points neighborhood would have been in Manhattan, between today’s streets of Park Street, Worth Street, and Baxter Street.
The story starts out with Aghy returning from serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, during World War I. The year is 1919, and he and his friends are trying to figure out, how to live in a quickly transitioning world. Their journey will involve World War I, bootlegging, gangsters, love, true friendship, and death.
Aghy is joined by two of his best friends. Because of the culture during 1919, his friends are not the type you would expect to see. Their friendship is forged during the Great War.
One of his friends is named Nigel. Nigel is a young African-American man from Harlem. His other friend is named Henry. Henry is a Japanese-Canadian, from British Columbia. Aghy comes from Irish immigrants, who sometimes fought too much, drank too much, but worked hard in order survive. Nigel comes from savvy number makers and bar owners, and Henry comes from a samurai clan that immigrated to Canada, in search of a new life.
This story will pull you into the year of 1919 through its descriptions of the culture, environment, news, dialog, and problems to be solved. It will let you feel what it was like to come home from World War I and have to start a new life in the transitioning time of the early twentieth century. It involves the choices Aghy has in front of him, and the hard decision he has to make regarding money, jobs, friendships, and love. I’m sure you will enjoy their adventure, and I hope you enjoy reading about Aghy, as much as I did writing about him.
