He is a native of the Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York. John holds a master’s degree in forensic science from the University of Florida. There’s a particular pleasure in a thriller that understands both strategy and consequence, and Overmatch by John Stamp absolutely does.

What hooked me immediately was the premise. A terrorist strike on a U.S. vessel. Two bodies that shouldn’t be there. A missing prototype that could upend global military balance. The story wastes no time raising the stakes and then steadily tightening the vise.

Tyrone Benhoff isn’t written as invincible. He’s pressured from the very top, operating in a fog of incomplete intel and shrinking options. That vulnerability adds texture to the action. Every decision feels costly. Every delay feels dangerous.

Belinda “Billy” West is a standout. Competent, sharp, and fully capable in her own right. Their partnership feels grounded in mutual respect rather than trope.

What I appreciated most was the sense of strategic depth. The rogue operative isn’t reckless. He’s methodical. Years in the making. That long game creates a tension that hums beneath every chapter.

The pacing is relentless but not shallow. There’s enough procedural detail to satisfy readers who love authenticity, without bogging down the narrative.

If you’re a fan of intelligent military thrillers with geopolitical weight and characters who earn their victories the hard way, this is a must read.

Five stars, easily.
