Thoughts 💭
Coral A. Ward did a really good job of setting up the reader to really fall for Naomi. I was rooting for her from the very beginning. Naomi is a great friend, it shows in everything she does for others throughout the course of this book. She takes so much pride in her work, family and her friendships. It truly hurt my soul that others didn't show her the same love. I wanted so bad to jump into the pages of this book and fight for the respect Naomi deserved. Many of the other characters were horrendous humans. I hated them.

I was happy when Naomi found someone that treated her so well. As a reader it hurt that we didn't get more details of her relationship, it felt like their story jumped too quickly and we missed really watching it flourish and evolve.

Overall, I think A Slice Of You was a good read. The author did a phenomenal job building her characters in a way that really brought up genuine real emotions while reading. I wish there were more building of the Big Love and more detail.

Naomi was still grieving her father’s death, and facing crossroads in her work, and her relationships with her best friend, Debra, and the man she was seeing, Sebastian. When an opportunity came to put her culinary skills to work for well-known restaurant owner, Patrick, she also had to face growing feelings for him. I enjoyed this story overall. It is written well. Although this is a romance, there is a lot of focus on the female main character’s other relationships too. The first half of the book deals a lot with those relationships, Naomi’s grief, and building foundation for the rest of the book. Everyone needed a slice of Naomi and it took some time to work through. Readers need to be patient with the pacing of the first half in anticipation of the romance really focusing in during the second half. It’s not that the first half isn’t interesting, it’s just that it only has bits and pieces of the eventual romance. My appreciation of Naomi grew as she increasingly found her voice to take a stand on what mattered to her and learned to recognize her value. Patrick was sweet and I could not help but wish we had gotten more of him. And more of the romantic relationship in general. It could have been a little less summarized and given more actual scenes. The secondary characters played some big parts in this story. Deb and Seb were both increasingly unlikeable as the story progressed, but that was kind of the point. The Australian setting was great. It was fun to see some unfamiliar slang and phrases. The story included elements of alcohol abuse, frequent drinking and smoking, infidelity, sexual harassment, and depression. This is a detailed open-door romance with significant innuendo and strong harsh language throughout.

A Slice Of You is the debut rom-com from Aussie author Coral A. Ward. With its abundance of food and cooking, it was a deliciously mouthwatering read.

Naomi is a talented pizza cook in a busy Noosa restaurant. Her dad taught her everything she knows about food and they had dreams of one day opening a restaurant together. Unfortunately her dad passed away seven months ago and Naomi is grief stricken.

She’s currently living with her best friend Deb, who seems to be on a never ending alcohol fuelled bender and just wants Naomi to join in with her drinking. Naomi is also confused about her feelings for Seb who is being kind of pushy when it comes to their relationship. Just as everything seems to be on a downward slide, Naomi meets a famous Italian restauranteur. Could this be the chance Naomi has been waiting for?

I loved this novel’s picturesque Noosa setting and also the focus on food. Naomi’s memories of her father and the legacy of food he has passed down to her are incredibly heartwarming and tender. Naomi’s mum was another highlight for me. She was incredibly nurturing and supportive of her children and I loved seeing her interactions with them. I was initially very frustrated with Naomi’s choices and the way everyone seemed to be taking advantage of her but I loved the growth of her confidence throughout the story and the ending was wonderful.

I did struggle a little with some of the dialogue between Naomi and her friends as I found it a bit awkward. However, this may be because the characters are a lot younger than me and so I found them difficult to relate to.

A Slice Of You does a great job of highlighting toxic bosses as well as the Aussie drinking culture. It touches on issues such as alcohol and drug addiction, misogyny and mental health, but only briefly, keeping the story lighthearted and romance focused.

For a debut novel, this was a good read. The Aussie vibe of this book was a refreshing contrast to many other books in the same genre. Not often do you read a reference to Woolworths and BP.

I did, however, struggle to relate to the main characters. Daniel was a huge ass, Seb gave me total cringe vibes, and Deb was toxic.

A slice of you touched over various topics such as alcoholism, cheating, romance, self-esteem issues, and toxic relationships.

Give it a read, and support a debut novel.

Overall a decent debut novel. I liked Naomi, a well rounded, realistic character. Though her tolerance for being a doormat at work, with her boyfriend and best friend was a bit hard to believe. Given her internal dialogue which I could a little annoying at times, she knows what’s right and wrong and keeps tolerating disrespect and bad behavior so as to go with the flow. Patrick sounded wonderful and I wish there had been a bit more detail in the development between these two. I found the writing style a bit matter of fact, and felt like I was being told what was happening and not drawn into the story to experience it and get taken on the journey with them. I didn’t get immersed into their world, the first half of the book felt a little Groundhog Day. I loved the Australian setting and references. Although I deeply disliked Seb and Deb, they were quite accurately depicted characters in terms of realism, I’m sure we’ve all known someone similar. I enjoyed the behind the scenes kitchen insights. It had great potential, did an adequate job, but didn’t leave me inspired. Definitely solid groundwork for a writing start, but there is room for growth and development. Getting a novel published is a massive achievement, congratulations on your debut Carol.

2.5⭐️ rounded up.
Honestly this book was not my favorite. There’s an insane amount of body shaming and judgement in this book. Also SA warning and ED warning. The FMC is a skilled cook who happens to have a horrible relationship with food that I found triggering at times. Also huge theme of alcoholism, but that relationship gets repaired by the end of the book. Decent ending but not my favorite.

Before I begin my review of A Slice of You by author Coral A. Ward, I need to clarify that Contemporary Romance as a genre is not my usual fare be it in the form of novels or films, my tastes are generally much darker, a quick glance at my bookshelves and movie collection illustrates this fact well, that being said I sat down and read A Slice of You, a romance genre novel set in the present day set primarily on the northern end of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia.

As for the novel itself, it is extremely well paced, written from the perspective of the main character, Naomi whilst also at certain points in italics highlighting her internal monologue in response to some of the situations, she finds herself in and the people she is interacting with at that very moment.

Coral Ward has done an impressive job in accurately portraying a wart and all depiction of a young woman labouring under the pressure of grief over the recent passing of a parent whilst also dealing with peer pressure and the daily grind that is her life. The characters are varied and have fully developed personalities each distinct to their own. Naomi’s internal monologue adds yet another layer of realism to the novel as it shows how complex she is as a character, who on the outside projects this air of confidence while on the inside is bereft, filled with crippling anxiety and self-doubt.

What makes A Slice of You different from other novels dealing with this type of character, is that at no point does any of this seemed forced, it comes across very naturally, the characters are true representations of young and older adults and are fully fleshed out. Coral Ward has done a great job at depicting characters who jump off the page, who find themselves in real situations that have consequences, and these consequences form the arcs of each character which in turn makes them believable and not just as mere words on the page.

The fact that she as the author has not shied away from highlighting the negative fallout of peer pressure and manipulation is one of the standouts of A Slice of You, nothing is glossed over here, and Coral Ward should be commended for this. A Slice of You showcases more than a fragile central protagonist; it highlights the effects of toxic relationships, duplicitous characters, self-destructive behaviour, manipulation, narcissism, and fear of commitment. These themes run throughout the novel and are fully explored at length but never feel out of place.

In short everything facet of A slice of You fits as it should with nothing thrown in for the sake of doing so. Whereas other romance novels in the past tend to overlook reality and focus more on passionate scenes, A Slice of You focuses more on real life with only sparse mentions of romantic scenes, preferring to showcase Naomi as a real person and not a sex object.

As I said at the beginning of my review, I stated that romance novels are not my usual fare, that being said; A Slice of You by author Coral A. Ward is a well written novel that never shies in its depiction of how the characters in the novel navigate through life.

Four and half stars.

A Slice of You" by Cora A. Ward is a deliciously crafted tale that immerses readers in the sun-drenched world of Noosa restaurants, where Naomi, our resilient protagonist, navigates the complexities of loss, friendship, and unexpected love.

From the outset, Ward skillfully paints Naomi as a character worthy of admiration. Her resilience in the face of grief and her unwavering commitment to her craft as a pizza cook make her a compelling figure. Naomi's qualities as a friend shine through in every interaction, showcasing her loyalty and selflessness. It's easy to root for her as she grapples with the challenges life throws her way.

Patrick, Naomi's late father, is a poignant presence throughout the narrative, symbolizing strength, integrity, and the enduring bond between father and daughter. His memory serves as a guiding light for Naomi as she navigates the tumultuous journey of grief and self-discovery.

However, not all characters in the story evoke warm sentiments. Deb, Daniel, and Seb are portrayed as antagonists whose actions often leave a bitter taste. Their selfishness and disregard for Naomi's well-being stand in stark contrast to her kindness and generosity. As a reader, it's difficult not to feel a surge of indignation at the way they treat her.

Despite the flaws of certain characters, there are moments of genuine joy when Naomi finds solace in the arms of someone who cherishes her. While their love story unfolds with palpable chemistry, there's a sense of longing for more depth and development in their relationship. The rapid progression of their romance leaves readers craving a more nuanced exploration of their connection.

In conclusion, "A Slice of You" is a compelling read that adeptly captures the essence of human emotion and resilience. Ward's masterful character development elicits genuine empathy and investment from the reader. While the swift pace of certain plotlines may leave some longing for more, the overall narrative delivers a satisfying blend of heartache and hope.

The first half of the novel is a bit slow due to setting up the plot, character development, and a bit of history for Naomi. The author does an amazing job creating characters that you can love and hate. Naomi is a young lady struggling to deal with grief from her father's passing, a difficult job with a Neanderthal of a boss, and struggling with standing up for herself especially to those closest to her who are taking advantage of her. Sadly her best friend and boyfriend are those using her the most.
Unfortunately, the breakdown of her friendship with Deb was heartbreaking to watch. Her breakup with Sebastián couldn't come soon enough! You felt you could really relate to the characters as you read. The characters remind you of young people living for the moment.
To finish up, we watch how Naomi comes to her senses and cuts her losses. As she works through her grief of her father, we watch how she starts to realize her worth and stop letting people use her. It's at this time She meets and trials for a very sexy, single, restaurateur Patrick Vitello. As the book closes I'm surprised by the twist ending. As this book started I thought I knew how this was going to end. Thank goodness the author knew better than me! It's a cute, quick rom-com book you can read over the weekend. For a debute novel I can't wait to see what Coral has in store next!

Thank you Author Coral A. Ward for the ARC! I was so frustrated while reading this book, mostly because I've been a pushover many times in my life and I understood her. Naomi is surrounded by people who take advantage of her and the way they speak to her just makes my blood boil! The absolute gall of her "best friend" Deb! I was so angry at the people around her insisting that she drink and this was not exaggerated in any way because I myself have heard "don't be a party pooper". Her boyfriend Sebastian had me rolling my eyes so much I almost got a headache! Thank goodness that she met Patrick because I was really rooting for her to find some happiness. I'm also glad that she had such a great relationship with her mom to help balance out the crappy people in her life. I've read some reviews that mention the words "juvenile" and "immature". Believe me when I say that some people really do speak this way. Some things that Sebastian said had me remarking"are you kidding me?" There are men who speak this way. Also, Naomi tends to laugh away a lot of things. That is nervous laughter when you don't know what else to say or do. Read this and be prepared to roll your eyes and get a sudden urge to eat some pizza!

It is so refreshing, and at the same time, different, to be reading a book that is so definitely set in Australia and is complete with its Australianisms. As an Australian, this was a breath of fresh air!

This close-to-real-life depiction is carried on throughout the story with Naomi and her internal struggle. She knows when she should stand up for herself, but constantly appeases others, at the cost of her own happiness. The result being the reader developing a huge dislike for her bestie Deb, her wannabe boyfriend Sebastian and her creepy (to keep it polite) boss Daniel.

Although this is a romance story, it vies away from the Rom-Com or light hearted style, as the majority of the story is about Naomi’s struggle with her unhappiness with her job, her abusive best friend and her boyfriend all tied into her sorrow over her father’s death months before. It is slow paced in that 75% of the story is focused on this struggle, and it is only in the last quarter of the story do we finally see some joy for Naomi, when she finds an amazing job and love with her new boss. It would have been lovely to see more of this relationship develop and perhaps less of the unhappiness. But as a debut novel, well done Coral!!

The first half of this book did a great job laying the foundation of the story. We got a good look at Naomi and the experiences and trauma in her life that led her to where she is. I really liked that there was a good focus on her other relationships and friendships before the main romance happened. This story had me feeling so angry when she was being used and taken advantage of! I was yelling "Don't do it!!" every time Deb suckered her in to doing something for her. Deb, Daniel, and Sebastian were soooo unlikable and my dislike for them just grew and grew up until the end.

Coral A. Ward did a great job making us feel all the feelings that Naomi was going through, to the point where I was rooting for her to finally fight back and stand up for herself. She was such a wonderful friend, she deserved better and I was so happy when she finally realized what she had to offer and stopped letting her 'friends' and others walk all over her.
I would have liked a little more of the romance plot and seeing their relationship build but overall we got the perfect ending and I was so happy to see Naomi finally being loved the way she deserved and working at a job that she was proud of!

✍️ Naomi is a great Pizza cook who is dealing with a lot of issues in her life after the death of her father and complicated relationship with her best friend Debra and the man she is seeing. When a wonderful opportunity comes along to work in a well known Italian restaurant owned by the handsome Patrick, she takes up the position and finds herself getting her life back together whilst growing affection for him.

From the star of the story I was hooked and in intrigue towards the characters and their motivations which kept me Captivated until the end. I finished it in one sitting. A wonderful Debut.

I Adored the characters of Naomi and Patrick and felt that Patrick was a perfect example of what a great character is and I was so glad that he came into Naomi's life at the right time to save her.

The storyline was Fun and Romantic and filled with Relatability and Sentimentality towards darker aspects conveyed throughout the story as well asAuthentic and Honest life experiences that made it a memorable read. The Restaurant and Noosa setting was a great place to set the tone and atmosphere for the book. Highly recommend.

A Slice of You is Ward's debut novel and overall I enjoyed it. Her adorable cover is what drew me in. I felt for Noami as she's navigating grief, life, and love. This is a sweet contemporary romance that handles some delicate subjects such as alcoholism and grief. I quickly gained a soft spot for Naomi and appreciated her selflessness as she gave out pieces of herself to everyone but let herself go by the wayside.

As everything seems to be falling apart an opportunity presents itself and opens a whole new world for Naomi. She finds herself attracted to someone that didn't expect to fall for. Will she allow love in or fight to make her current romance work?

Overall it was a good read. The first half was hard to get through and felt more like young adult versus contemporary romance but once you got into the second half you felt Ward's confidence in her book and the book took off. I felt like we could have used more detail in the second half and less detail in the first half. I commend Ward for putting herself out there and giving us a fun debut novel.

10/10 I highly recommend A Slice of You if you like romance books!

A slice of you is about a woman named Naomi she is put through the ringer in her life from family, friendship and relationships. This book has so many different real life scenario's that can be relatable to many different readers. Naomi deals with everything from loss, rejection to love. I really wanna expand on that but I also don't wanna spoil the book lol.. I just can't say enough good things about this book!!

I also liked that the book was inclusive to women of different sizes. The book also hits on some great life lessons/advice like learning to stand up for yourself.

If I remember correctly this is the authors 1st book and she knocked it out of the park IMO!! I can not wait to read more of her books!!!

Trigger Warnings below that can possibly spoil some of the book so read with caution......

Trigger Warnings:

Death from alcoholism, Sexual content including sexual harassment, shopping addiction, cheating spouse

So unconventionally brilliant. Congratulations on your debut novel, Coral :). I will definitely be keeping my eye out for more of your work but first, let's talk about this book. To sum it up, this book is about complicated relationships, pizza, ambition, achieving your dreams and finding true love that happens naturally and FAST. I can relate! My husband and I fell in love after a week and got married within a year of being together and we're still going strong. FAST LOVE HAPPENS GUYS :). When you know, you know.

I love how this is so different to everything on the market. It's refreshing, real, raw and authentic. It's got soul, it's got fire and life lessons that I'm sure will help many young women with the issues they face and offer inspiration. Well done.

Your characters are so authentic and real and extremely interesting to read about! I could imagine them talking on a TV show or something. Love the dialogue girl.

Keep writing! and congratulations again.

It has those ”amazing" 4 ⭐⭐️⭐⭐/5

👍🏻In "A Slice of You," Coral A Ward delivers a compelling story that is as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking. Naomi's quest to find balance and fulfillment in her personal and professional life is a testament to the strength of the human spirit.

👍🏻The writing is both engaging and emotionally nuanced, capturing the highs and lows of Naomi's journey with authenticity and depth. The novel deftly balances themes of ambition, romance, and self-discovery, making it a richly layered read.

👍🏻Ward's descriptive prowess shines as she brings to life the bustling, high-stakes environment of a top-tier restaurant, immersing readers in the sights, sounds, and flavors of Italian cuisine.

👍🏻My recommendation: This novel is a delightful and thought-provoking read for anyone who appreciates a well-crafted story about following one's passion and navigating the complexities of love and loss.🖤

Overall I enjoyed A Slice of You and would be interested in reading more by Coral A. Ward.

After a slow start, the second half made up for it. Deb and Sebastian were so unlikeable from the start, I didn't feel upset when Naomi finally stood up for herself with all those that used her and took advantage of her. I wish she had stood up for herself earlier, but I, just like Naomi, am the same way. A people pleaser and try to give someone the benefit of the doubt - more than once and more than I should. Seeing her character change and grow was refreshing.

I liked the Australia setting and scenes. I loved Patrick. I wish we could have seen more of Naiomi and Patrick as a couple and more of their relationship, maybe a jump ahead a little further into their relationship or actually seen scenes of their families meeting.

Coral A Wards debut novel ‘A Slice of you’ is a cute rom-com style novel.
It was very lighthearted and easy to read.
I certainly enjoyed the second half of the story more, I found the first half quite slow to get into as I was hoping to see more between Naomi & Patrick after their first meeting.
There are a lot of sweet moments in the book that certainly make it easy to fall in love with Naomi herself and I found myself wanting more for her.
I personally found the writing needed a little more development. Comments that the characters made between one another often came off cheesy and unnatural. I found that a lot of Naomi’s negative relationships were quite unrealistic and came across a tad too dramatised.
Coral A Ward has a lot of potential for her future stories and I look forward to reading more of her books as her skills bloom.

This book had a slow start for me. It took a bit for me to get roped in.

What I really liked about the writing style was that you felt like you could relate. The way the characters had conversations were were so real and life like.

Speaking of real and life like, I love how the story shows the ups and downs of friendship and love.

I also loved how throughout the story we saw the FMC grown from being shy and quiet to being able to stick up for herself and hold her own.

It was a slow burn, but was a good one. FMC knew what she wanted and wasn’t afraid to be real about it.

I believe in love at first sight, I knew it with my now husband. This book shows that it exists as well.

Last, I love a happy ending, and especially one with love.

Overall a good debut novel. Some of the topics covered in this book were a little triggering for me but I was able to push past them. (talk of alcoholism and grief) I found the first half of the book a little slow, but I enjoyed following on Naomi's journey and once the romance started I flew through the last half of the book.

I really enjoyed that there are relatable situations that Naomi goes through, it was easy to make a connection to her character.

I think the book has some great lessons on self discovery, relatable situations that personally I have felt so alone during my experiences with them. This book would make for a great rainy day afternoon read.

Give it a try

A Slice of You touches on many different topics such as alcoholism, cheating, romance, self-esteem, and experiencing toxic relationships. Overall, I enjoyed this authors debut novel. The characters were relatable to a variety of ages and walks of life.

Naomi is a wonderful pizza chief who is grieving her father’s death. She finds herself at a crossroad with friends and her career. Her best friend, Debra is an alcoholic and boyfriend Sebastian is mmmm. She finds herself with an opportunity to use her amazing skills to work for well-known restaurant owner, Patrick. Sooner or later she finds herself growing feelings for him. I cannot wait to get further in this series.

This book was a great read and I am happy to be apart of her debut novel.

I could not put this book down! I read it in one sitting and lost track of time. This book is causing quite a stir with opinions on the characters and that makes it even more juicy. Honestly, this book is brilliant. It's got the old classic vibes to it in a weird modernised kinda way (it will probably become a cult classic tbh). That Seb guy was practically Dorian Gray in a weird way. I'm guessing the people who find some characters unlikeable got stung badly by similar ones in the past? That's what makes this book even more brilliant and relatable. And Naomi deserves everything good in the world and her character growth is phenomenal. Hurry up and write a sequel please and thank you.

Good attempt for a debut novel

Rounded up from 2.5 stars.

This book feels like the author had a deadline they were about to miss.

First 50% of the book starting building characters and relationships and personalities. It delved into their issues. The next 25% seems to ignore that the MC has some serious issues with grief, avoidance communication and her eating disorder. The last 25% is like we forgot she needs a love interest and pairs her off to a secondary character that gets given no personality or relationship building.

I think this author would benefit from reading her dialogue out loud with someone else. IRL I’ve never heard someone call someone they’ve slept with once, a lover, so many times.

While it took me a little to get into it, I found this book to be quite a cute and emotion ride. I found myself relating more and more to the MFC and who doesn't love a HEA? This girl just keeps getting knocked down but with every blow she finds herself more and more. Add in some delicious food and a sexy Italian accent and you have yourself the makings of a wonderful read. Thank you Coral for sharing this slice with the world and only increasing my life long dream of visiting Australia! Look forward to reading more of your books!

Review may contain some spoilers.

I gave this book a 3.75⭐ It was fun, fast-paced, & heartfelt. Noemi had a lot of struggles in her life & had to endure abuse & awful relationships but she was strong & had to fight for what was right & for the love she deserves! I also like that she did not settle for less with her friendship & love life.

The one thing to improve about this book was that there were a lot of scenes about her best friend Deb who was very annoying! OMG! Asking Noemi to drive her everywhere & asking Noemi to buy her cigarettes. The most annoying & selfish side character I've ever read! Haha!

Overall, the last 100 pages were really great and had a lot of scenes with Patrick! I like the Patrick character. To be honest, he was too good to be true but who cares? He left me swooning at his cooking skills, kindness, and good looks! 🥰

I always love a happy ending!!

Overall, Coral Ward did great on her debut novel. 😊

Copy was provided by the author & I am giving an honest review voluntarily.

I really enjoyed this book, it's such a well-written book considering it's a debut!!

I really enjoyed Coral's language and story telling, and would like to read her next books.

I would say though as some feedback, that I do think Naomi's romance at the end of the book felt rushed, and a little spoiled by the Daniel stuff. It also felt somewhat over-the-top, like too much too soon. But it didn't stop me from loving the book still.

A really enjoyable read for me - thanks!

What a quirky and cute romance novel! Some darker themes such as grief and alcoholism were handled with care and the characters were extremely interesting and complex, although Deb annoyed me a lot. Deb was interesting but she needed to get her issues sorted. Naomi was the sweetest character and I was super satisfied with the ending. Overall, I loved this book and enjoyed the writing style.
