When strange murders occur and statues disappear, Lord Lincoln calls upon former Special Constable Horatio Lyle to figure out what the police cannot solve.
A meeting of friends 15 years after the last saw each other, leads to a few of them going into business together with some unforeseen results. OK… albeit a bit flat at times, in my opinion. 5 out of 12.
Based on the muted praise that I last placed on the author, I probably would not have gone out of my way to read this book. However, as I had run out of books at the airport.
And thank god I did, as this was one of the funniest and easiest reads of the year and may require a re-think about the author, as he has another book available to read.
This starts with that tricky ground of a school re-union. Our slightly awkward and self depreciating anti hero meets up with old school friends including the cool Jay, his then girlfriend who he always fancied and an unfortunately monikored loser called Wanker.
The antihero has some important choices with home and career - his girlfriend has requested a deadline for where they are going with their relationship and he has lost his newspaper column.
So there is plenty of opportunity for the author to discuss usual school japes of the past and current issues facing a 30 something male. Works well.
Jay is something of a smooth talker and has a chequered history including jail time for fraud which should really have made everyone suspicous of his money making plans through international call centres.
But the crisis in his life, the promise of making a lot of money and the prospect of finally getting the girl of his dreams all become too tempting and he throws himself into the scheme with abandon.
Without going through the plot, lets just say that he gets the girl, loses his current girlfriend, gets swindled by the Jay and his current girl who are still in cahoots and gets jailed in the weakest last 1/5th of the book.
Story is not as important as the frequency of the jokes and wry observations which permitate this book.
It genuinely is funny and a perfect summer read.
