I live in Oregon at the moment, though I hail from the UK. Growing up in a house overlooking a graveyard, on the edge of the bleak and foreboding Pennine Hills, seems to have instilled in me an obsession with all things dark and spooky. The complete Aveline Jones trilogy is available at all good bookstores and has been, or will be, translated into Spanish, German, Czech, French, Turkish, Polish and Russian. My latest effort is called Shadowhall Academy and follows the spooky adventures of the Aunt Lilian character from the Aveline books as a young girl in the 1980s. I also have a dyslexia-friendly ghost story coming out with Barrington Stoke at Halloween this year.

Favourite authors include Robert Aickman, Stephen King (his early stuff), M R James, Susan Cooper, H P Lovecraft, Philip Pullman, Shirley Jackson, James Herbert, Lindsey Barraclough, Alan Garner, Neil Gaiman, Dennis Wheatley, Andrew Michael Hurley, Penelope Lively, Alan Moore, Mervyn Peake, Bernard Cornwell, Arthur Machen, Jane Austen, Cormac McCarthy, Roald Dahl, Jeanette Winterson, George R R Martin, Chris Priestley, Graham Joyce, Dan Rhodes, Robin Spriggs and many more.

It is important to note that the majority of the themes explored in this book deal with sensitive subject matters. My review, therefore, touches on these topics as well. Many people might find the subject matters of the book & those detailed in my review overwhelming. I would suggest you steer clear of both if this is the case. Please note that from this point forward I will be writing about matters that contain reflections on the murder of a child, the discussions around child neglect, & others.

The second instalment of the Aveline Jones books—a series of stories I hope to see go on forever—hosts a return of some of the beloved characters from the first book as friends & family come together to spend some quality time in a small decrepit cottage in Norton Wick, situated just outside of Bristol in England.

As Aveline seeks out the circle of rocks known as “The Witch Stones” she meets Hazel Browne, an eccentric young girl who roams around the village on horseback & seems to mourn Aveline’s attention when anyone else is around. As Aveline begins to question Hazel’s intentions as a friend & villager, she learns “The Witch Stones” was a place of trial & violence against the women who were deemed witches in 1642.

This is, once again, a book that I feel the need to preface with a content warning. I believe that it is good to know what one is embarking on to better prepare ourselves for what is to come. In this book, Aveline reads a historical novel about the witch trials that took place in Norton Wick. She is then given a visual show of what happened to both Alice & Hazel Browne after the townspeople sentenced them to death. A particular scene in the visual recollection showcases a tree in which two hangman's nooses are tied to a branch.

Though the book does not outright explain that the two women are being directed to be hanged until death, this is a subject matter that might insight into further conversation from a young reader. Therefore, please be wary of this subject matter both for those who might be readily desirous of further details & explanations as well as those who might be sensitive to such events whether directly or not, regardless of age.

There was a single instance in this story where I questioned whether or not I would find this second book as enthralling as the first. Hazel is a character that I was hard-pressed to like—as ghastly as that sounds—because her behaviour was authentic to the letter; she is rude, self-centred, selfish & sad. Her actions towards Aveline were difficult to read because, as a person advanced enough from the years of the target age reader, I felt sad for Aveline to encounter someone who so desperately sought to isolate her from those she loved. In that same breath, I found myself reflecting on Hazel as a mature adult would; how sad it must be to be a child who spends all their days & nights in isolation due to the misguided actions of adults.

The aspect of these books that I adore the most is the dedication to the world outside of the one Aveline seeks to find; the real world where her mother, her friends, her school & her habitual tasks reside, is filled with normalcy but also, comfort. I find it refreshing to read about a character who feels confident within themselves because they have parents who tend to them in healthy & loving ways.

Though Aveline finds herself in sticky situations she is never faced with conflicts alone. Even when Hazel tries to poison the minds of her friends & family, Aveline knows, innately, that these people do love her & they do care about her, recognizing the dark magic when she notices the absurd shift in their behaviour. I think it’s wonderful that Aveline can feel safe in the world, even when she is exploring the supernatural elements hidden behind unruly gardens.

This story does touch on many unsavoury topics & I am glad to read about them in a way that encourages readers to reflect & seek to ask questions. For example, when Aveline begins to wonder about the lack of parental guardianship in Hazel’s life she wonders if Hazel is being neglected. I found this train of thought quite astounding as I cannot call to mind a book—classified under the same genres & storylines—that touches on such a reality.

Aveline recognizes the signs that are emitted by someone who might be experiencing neglect & acts in a way that would make every adult in her life proud. Understandably, this is a spooky story about witches so, it is only right to see Aveline & Harold creep down the fields to Hazel’s house. However, they are not keeping the possible neglect secret from the adults in their lives, they are simply trying to ensure that they can prove their suspicions true before bringing down the hammer of adult power upon a terrible situation.

While tackling hefty topics this story also touches on feelings of sadness, anger & loneliness in ways that do not seek to invoke pity in the heart of the reader. By this, I mean that we are meant to view & interpret Hazel’s feelings as valid. She is certainly going about isolating herself from other villagers in the right way; casting spells, playing naughty tricks & refusing to socialize with them because of what a group of people hundreds of years ago did.

Yet, her simmering anger & feelings of extreme loneliness are never to be regarded as silly or stupid. Even when Alice is explaining the history of witches & her relation to Hazel during her conversation with Aveline, she does not invalidate Hazel's feelings. Rather, Aveline is encouraged to seek to understand why Hazel acts & feels these ways while staying true to herself.

Aveline is not being told that she can save Hazel from any of her feelings & she has been taught well enough by her parents to recognize that she does not need to compromise herself or her values to seek to please someone, especially not someone who is being disrespectful.

I am truly impressed with how Hickes incorporates such casual discussion around self-worth, extreme emotions, morose subject matters & family dynamics to leave the reader with the ability to gauge that Aveline is doing the right thing even if Hazel is not getting her way.

I cannot speak enough praise for this book. I never want to see an end of the series & would read these fondly, multiple times, throughout my life. Hickes has crafted a character that is well-rounded, authentic & creative; Aveline Jones is a joy to read & follow along with as she seeks out new adventures. I’m glad her friendship with Mr. Lieberman & Harold has continued to blossom & I am glad to see Aunt Lilian make another appearance.

It's nice to read about a character who has family & friends who trust her, & who love & care for her & ultimately, support her in all her quirky endeavours. Eagerly anticipating the next instalment of this book series I shall reflect on the value of stories in our lives for without them, where would I be?

Aveline and her mom are on holiday. The village they’re staying in has a mysterious and creepy circle of rocks called the Witch Stones. That’s like music to Aveline’s ears. She asks her best friend to bring some books about stone circles and witches, hoping to find out more about the stones. When she goes to check out the Witch Stones for herself, she meets a girl there who seems to know quite a lot about them. A new friendship is born. But there’s something off about the girl.

The Witch Stones instantly draw your attention. The way they are described makes them so very fascinating and slightly creepy. They are quite reminiscent of the most famous prehistoric stone circle monument of Stonehenge. And the mystery surrounding them is just the icing on the cake.

The way Aveline’s new friend influences her and tries to steer her away from her mom and her best friend is actually quite intriguing. Once we get to the bottom of it, we realize that this girl has deep, dark secrets. Her loneliness is without a doubt understandable. And her troubled youth leads the story to some more serious themes. But it’s undeniably captivating and it never goes too far, considering the intended audience.

Once again, the Aveline Jones series delivers with another absolutely brilliant and gripping story. Easy recommendation.

Actual rating 4.5/5 stars.

Aveline Jones is reluctant to spend a summer holiday with her mother in a remote English town devoid of any other children her age. When she finds an odd arrangement of witch stone it captivates her imagination. And when, soon after, she meets a strange but bewitching girl of around her age, her holidays suddenly appear to be far more full of adventure than she originally foresaw.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Aveline Jones. Just as in the last book featuring her, this was full of supernatural horror, eerie vibes, and folklore come to life. I adored the atmosphere Hickes conjured, as well as the insights to Britain's supernatural past. This was heightened with the small snippets related to the occult that appeared between each chapter and were taken directly from historical texts. The illustrations provided a thrilling finishing touch and also aided in crafting the perfect, sinister and suspenseful, little read.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author, Phil Hickes, the illustrator, Keith Robinson, and the publisher, Usborne Publishing, for this opportunity.

Brawo! Opowieść dosłownie zasysa. Polecam na ponury jesienny wieczór.

“Haven’t you ever experienced something you can’t explain?”
Aveline isn’t spending her summer break at the beach like she’d hoped. Instead, she and her mother are staying in a cottage in the sleepy village of Norton Wick.

While Aveline is initially concerned that this holiday will be boring, it turns out to be anything but. Conveniently located at the end of the garden are The Witch Stones, an ancient stone circle with mysterious origins.

description

Aveline, with her love of things that go bump in the night and anything else that would be of interest to Mulder, is in her element. Harold, her friend from Malmouth, is coming to visit for a few days with his uncle and Lilian, Aveline’s aunt.

Together, Aveline and Harold hope to solve the mysteries of the stone circle and the strange bottle Aveline found in the garden.
Old bottles with things inside them couldn’t just be ignored.
Before Harold arrives, Aveline makes a new friend, Hazel Browne. That’s “Browne with an e.” She also meets the local vicar, Alice, who’s fond of bowler hats and rainbow socks.

I was glad when Harold showed up because, although I was initially intrigued by Hazel, her possessiveness didn’t endear her to me at all. I never connected with her so found it difficult to see beyond her abrasiveness, even after I understood where she was coming from.

I enjoyed the magic in this book and definitely considered indulging in dessert with Aveline and Hazel.

Aveline and Harold’s first response, regardless of the ooky spookiness they’re facing, is to find a bunch of books and do research. That affords them kindred spirit status with me for life.

I love both Aunt Lilian and Mr Lieberman, who I met in the first book, but they didn’t have much of a role in this one. I had been looking forward to getting to know Aveline’s mother but I didn’t really get much of a sense of her personality. I hope to get to know the adults better in the next book.

I absolutely adored Keith Robinson’s illustrations in this book. The cover image was dark, mysterious and creepy. I particularly loved the magpie featured at the beginning of each chapter.

description

Although I definitely got sucked into the mystery of the first book more than this one, I love Aveline and can’t wait to hang out with her and Harold again in The Vanishing of Aveline Jones.

Book 2 in the Aveline Jones series, although this could easily be read as a standalone. Aveline and her mum are off to a holiday cottage for the summer. When they arrive there Aveline is delighted to discover that the main attraction, the Witch Stones, are right outside her back door. These stones are huge monuments, steeped in history and ancient tradition and Aveline is entranced by them.

She soon meets some of the villagers, in particular one mysterious girl called Hazel Browne. She’s nice but occasionally odd, Aveline can’t quite work her out. But when she finally does, it might be too late…

Another brilliantly spooky offering from Hickes. I read this with my 11yo Year Seven daughter and we raced through it. Very well written with intriguing characters and fascinating facts about ancient folklore makes it a riveting read. Then when you throw in all the spooky goings on on top of that, you really do have a winner!

I zabrakło mi dociekliwości Aveline!

This was such a fantastic sequel! I loved how Aveline deals with something different this time, but just as eerie & hauntingly amazing. I love a good witch story, & this delivered. I stayed wondering if a certain character was good, bad, or somewhere in the middle. Such a quick read, didn’t want to put it down. VERY atmospheric. The writing makes you feel like you’re really there-whether in this little town, at the witch stones, where she is staying, & other places-loved it! This kept me in suspense, & I loved how the story unfolded, & everything we learned about the town, the witches, & the witch stones along the way. I was so happy so see Harold too! I remember reading a small preview for this one when I finished the 1st book, & how it said she’d be traveling somewhere. And I was worried that meant he wouldn’t be in this book(since I loved them together in the first book). So I was very relieved to see them in action together again. Plus a couple other familiar characters make an appearance. I absolutely love Aveline, & I can’t wait to see what she & Harold get up to in the next book. Highly recommend. Another beautiful cover by Keith Robinson too, along with beautiful chapter head illustrations!💜

In this second book we follow Aveline in a new adventure in which the horror and creepy vibes are definitely stronger than before.

Aveline gets to spend the summer with her mom at a cottage in the countryside full of history. Really close to the house she will find some ancient stones that are known to people in town as The Witch Stones.

As Aveline starts to make some interesting discoveries with the help of Harold and gets to know the residents of the village of Norton Wick, she will soon realize that the village's past is way darker than she could have ever imagined and she and her loved ones might be in great danger.

This one offered a lot more action than the first book, more thrills and suspense to the very end. Perfect for the spooky season and for anyone interested in a good cozy middle grade witch story. I am definitely excited to keep following Aveline and her future adventures.

I really enjoyed The Haunting of Aveline Jones when I read it earlier this week, so I was really excited to read more of her adventures. This one was, sadly, just okay.

I am sad that this sequel didn't really live up to the first one. The plot wasn't as good as its predecessor, and it didn't deliver the same creepy vibes as the 1st. I did enjoy that we got to see some of the characters we got to know in the previous book, though - which I did like.

I will be reading the last book in this series, so I hope it recaptures the magic!

The most relatable phrase : Of all the seasons Aveline loved autumn the best. At times she wished she could wrap all its smells and colours up and wear them like a cloak. She’d had enough of the hot weather.

4/5

No...
