Demon Reform Academy #1

Demon Reform Academy: Term 1

Rate this book
Welcome to Demon Reform Academy, where demons are sent to hone their powers and become active members of supernatural society.

The Fates had dealt me a twisted hand. After a lifetime of abuse aimed at awakening a power I never even possessed, I devoured my mother's soul. Suddenly, I was face-to-face with a father who was oblivious to my existence and burdened with the knowledge that I was the sixth soul eater in all of Kalista.
My father, a representative on the Demon Council, offered me a chance at a new life. That new life, however, meant enrolling at the dark haven known as Demon Reform Academy.
Being his daughter painted a target on my back, one that invited hostility and intrigue.
Five demons pushed their way into my life, each with a cryptic agenda—to break me or heal me.
A chaos demon created havoc, determined to make me quit.
A shadow demon craved my pain.
A fear demon desired my terror.
A vengeance demon sought to annihilate my tormentors.
And a dream demon summoned me into his dreamscape every night.
I was here to work on myself, but a whirlwind of rumors, dark magic, and a secret society threatened to plunge the academy into deeper turmoil—and me along with it.

Poor writing

I truly don’t understand how this books has a thousand reviews with four stars. The writing is predictable and juvenile. For example the “mean girl/bully” has no character beyond I’m a noble and I hate you and anyone who isn’t a noble is beneath me. Despite the bully attacking the main character numerous times she keeps accepting the bully’s invite to hang out with her and then is shocked when she attacks her. Also the guys? Like come on. There’s a difference between the hot broody kind of ahole vibes and men who are just toxic/awful. She’s somehow magically in love with them despite all the abuse she’s been through no matter how awful and evil they are to her? She doesn’t even fight back, not with words, not with actions, not with removing herself from them. This book could be so great with a redo, some beta readers, and a good editor. The ideas were great, the execution not so much

Pssst. Excuse me Lyra if you are reading this wtf. How could you leave me like this. I need more post haste please! If I thought I loved Fate Hollow Academy and nothing could possibly top it then I might be wrong becuase Demon Reform Academy is in the running form matching it or even possibly surpassing it. I am so intrigued in seeing where Lyra takes these character and this world.
I love also that it is in fact in the same world as Fate Hollow but much later! We hear about fate hollow and even about our beloved characters in this story and everytime they came up it made me grin.
This is the story of Pandora. And her life growing up was horrible to put it in easily digestible terms. I would heed the warning in the beginning of the book becuase when Lyra mentions what this book contains she means it. But it is also what Lyra endures that ends up saving her when her powers activate.
Entering Demon Reform Academy is supposed to to help her learn the ropes of what it actually means to be a demon in society. Something she really knows nothing about and help her really learn on how to feed as the type of demon she is. No I am not even going to say what that is even if it is in the description of the book. But thre is something more to her. And I really can’t wait to hopefully learn more about that and hopefully why that came to be apart of her powers! These types of books that Lyra does are my favorites by her. I can’t wait for term 2 and will be very anxiously awaiting the next part. Until then I will keep rereading Fate Hollow and book one of Demon Reform (BECAUSE I loved in that much!)

DNF At 55% (Audiobook)

Well, this is unfortunate. I had high hopes for this one, and it let me down. It started off interesting and had me hooked, but as it went on, it became more and more not good. The FMC is naive (which I knew going into this), but it comes off weird. It almost feels like she's playing into a character (if that makes sense?). It doesn't come off as genuine. Of the MMC's 2 out of the 5 are fine. The other 3 are douchbags for assumptions they made about her without ever meeting her. They project so much on her and get angry with their own projections. It's off-putting and I'd rather not constantly hear about it, thanks.

It takes a certain gift....

It takes a certain gift to write this much and it be about the same thing in each chapter in several point of views. This book goes absolutely no where. Even the cliffhanger makes no sense. It was as if the author Knew it was going no where and then "magically" their powers recognized each order 80% into the story.
The whole story is... You don't know what I've been thru... Want to match parental trauma?
Relationship seems forced at the very end. And this is set in basically this time period... There's fashionable leg gear she could put on her leg that wouldn't draw attention. Not "mummy" cloth and wondering why ppl looking at her🙄.
It's just so repetitive!! Every chapter... Every single chapter... Just worded a lil differently. Do better.

ARC REVIEW
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | (no spice in the first book)
WOWWW!!! The way Lyra writes is just so captivating! Another great read, I really missed this world and I’m so happy to be back in Kalista. This was darker and more raw than Fate Hollow Academy and I am LIVINGG for it! This is a why choose and fated mates two of my favorites!! I am obsessed with all of Pandora’s mates already, I can’t wait for all the groveling Dex, Skel, and Hemlock are about to do!! Reed is definitely my favorite, such a sweet heart ugh!😮‍💨🩷

I just know Pandora’s recovery journey isn’t going to be easy but I can’t wait to see her transform into the badass I know she is inside!

LYRA WHAT WAS THAT ENDING OMFGGG!!!! I’m sooooo excited for Term 2😭😭😭

I’m really not a fan of bully romances, but I did really like this first book.
2 of the 5 mates are so sweet and loving it sort of helps deal with the other three being less than stellar.
Also. I really like Death’s fatherly relationship with her. He’s so protective and sweet. It’s cute.

I hated everything

I loved the beginning, and then it just went downhill after that. I hated everything about this read. Our fmc reminds me of Bella from Twilight. She can't stop that weird Stuttering way of talking. She was a blubbering mess everywhere. Now do I acknowledge the trauma she went through?. Most definitely! Maybe she needed to stay home with her new found father and not be at school with a bunch of kids at a school that read off as topical movie worthy drama with snarky bratty kids, bad boys with terrible unoriginal names, who definitely seem like losers who drink and do drugs? And we have our little lamb who's frightened, and crying, and all around not ready to be around any kind of Environment. Honestly I just wanted to shake her. Super powerful, Could literally rip the soul off a body. And she's literally like, "Why are you so mean". Everybody needs to kumbaya and be friends. I was hoping for a young lady who would never let anyone hurt her again. I was praying for a Phoenix to Rise out of the ashes. To take her life finally in her own hands. This was not that.

Excuse me miss Lyra Winters, what did you put in this book? I could not and did not want to stop reading.

The story pulled me right in and I am so curious how it further develops in term 2. I love the characters, they have so much dimension. I wish I could give Pandora a hug, she hurts so much but she handles is so beautifully. I love her entire person, after everything she endured she is still kind and warm. She is so strong and I can’t wait for her to grow into her power and she her no longer be lived by her trauma. I also think that the way she feels about her traumas is so well described, “I just want the pain to stop! I want to stop being afraid all of the time”, that’s how it feels in real life. The same goes for the guys, their pasts and the way they deal with it present day is so clearly connected and even though they act like dicks, through their backstories you understand why. Don’t tell anyone but Skel is my favorite 🫣 The scene where they shared the fae drug 👀👀 I am so excited to see their relationships develop and to see the guys grovel 🤭

Can we talk about the cliffhanger for a hot minute because I can’t handle having to wait MONTHS to know what happens next 🫠

• Academy
• Fated mates
• Enemies to lovers
• Slow burn
• Secret society
• Why choose
• “Who did this to you”
• Touch her and die
• Supernatural romance
• Abused fmc

Please check the trigger warning before reading the book 💗

Thank you so much for the ARC Lyra!

“ there was a tortured agony within her soul, and it drew me in like a moth to a flame”

“ shit therapy kind of feels good. Not as good as whiskey but a close second”

This is a slow burn,RH, first book to a four part series. We follow along in the journey of Pandora. A young demon who is struggling to use and learn her “newly” acquired abilities. She enters the academy in hopes of learning how to use her abilities safely.
The characters that are introduced throughout the story all have reasons to why they’ve been sent to the reform Academy. They are all damaged demons surviving but not quite living yet. I sense within the next couple books there will be a lot of character growth. This was a great read and I was happily surprised that you don’t necessarily have to read Fates Hollow Academy to understand this book. (Definitely read it though. It was amazing )The previous series is mentioned multiple times and some of the characters from that series are brought up, but I don’t feel like it’s a requirement to read that series before this book.
Also, Reed is definitely my favorite so far. His character sounds absolutely adorable. 💜 I can’t wait for the next book for some groveling.

1.5 ⭐️. No spice. Writing is so simple, very boring. The timing throughout the book is weird, for one part we’re going detailed day by day and then random days/weeks go by with nothing & barely noting that the time has jumped. It seemed interesting at first with a different world but dang…. I need some kind of development in either characters or plot…

Whoa there…. This book drew me in like a moth to a flame. The summary really doesn’t do it justice. I’ve downloaded it once before in the fall but discarded it when I thought I found something better. I thankfully came back to it and was immediately sucked in. The emotions that are written grasp you. It’s hard not to feel for each of the characters you read about when you read their point of view. Their memories are painful to read but their actions make sense after reading their history.

It’s written in Multiple point of views with Pandora being our female lead character. Her character suffered abuse from the hands of her sadistic mother from the age of 1 according to what her mother Penny Bones told her. Penny is a shadow demon and feeds off pain and excuses her actions by telling her to feed off the pain thinking she can feed like she does as a shadow demon. Instead she almost dies on the daily. Pandoras only friend is the soul of a kitten that had stumbled into her cell before his head was severed by her mom. His soul is sealed inside his skull and Pandora can talk to him and he to her. His name is Nebula and talks to her when she needs him. Pandora almost dies again at the hands of her mother when Pandoras Soul eater powers activate and pulls the soul of her mother out and eats it like cotton candy if it was a Smokey version. That’s when her dad Daryl (aka Death, Councillor representative for Soul Eaters) shows up along with Darkmore (Vengence demon, also on the Council as the Vengeance representative, he’s also one of the staff members at Demon Reform school as a counsellors). They rescue her not really knowing her story but knowing she’s the daughter of death and inherited Deaths Soul Eater powers. She heads off to Demon Reform academy, and is bullied constantly. This is nothing compared to what she grew up with. She meets Reed her Dream Demon, who is also half human, he’s bullied because he isn’t a full Pure demon. Then there’s, Dex, Bram, Skel, who are drawn to her but anything to do with real feelings, they basically run, or torture her to “overcome” those feelings of interest. They all had rough lives growing up. Dex is a shadow demon and uses his shadows on her loving her pain as it fills up his reserves despite her pleading not to hurt her. Skel, he’s a fear demon I believe, smokes from a magic pipe to get high so his magic doesn’t spill out. It’s hinted that he made an entire village basically commit suicide after a ceremony gone wrong with a gem that was supposed to help. Bram, drinks like a fish, thinks she’s there to kill him. So they all basically taunt and torture her.
Pandora is roomed with another female and she turns out to be a huge bully. There’s Nobles and then there is Non Nobles. They are brought up to hate each other, because Nobles have the privilege of getting the best jobs regardless of their power levels. Pandora doesn’t see the world that way though, and sticks up for the non nobles that include, Reed, Dex, Bram and Skel. Reed falls for her but the other 3 make her life even harder.
I know some reviews state that Pandora seems to fall for the lies of her roommate who just wants to be friends, I agree but I think she continuously falls for it because she never had any kind of interaction in the cell other than her mother. She’s STARVED for affection, and her roommate knows this. And gets her friends to kick the crap out of her to the point of her almost dying several times. Pandora falls for it a few times but starts to catch on. Thankfully Reed, Dex, Bram and Skel hear of it after finding her dying and saves her. Since her secret isn’t in the open yet, about being abused since she was a baby, they don’t understand the severity of this beating…. And react badly. But it does make the guys think twice before taunting her, this is the turning point for them. Then the end, when she falls off a cliff, their mate bonds manifest… we know Pandora doesn’t die as there’s 4 books in the series but I can’t wait to see the redemption of these guys. Reed and Hunter (Darkmore) have always supported her so it was a happy connection, but the other 3, need to do some belly crawling and a whole lotta ass kissing.
I don’t understand how they don’t see Headmaster Blackthistle is behind all the dark magic attacks. He takes a special interest in Pandora since she can suck the dark magic from ritual circles that are saturated in it as well as students that were infected. Before Pandora came along, there was a gem that could do this that the councillors brought out from hiding but Blackthistle keeps hinting that they should be using Pandora instead. Daryl and Darkmore immediately shut that down but don’t suspect him…
Dexs parents are in the thick of it with Dark Vale, and Pandora cleanses Dex from his own infection his parents forced on him. Charlotte Vane Reeds ex best friend is a Druid and forces Pandoras nightmares using memories of her mother maiming her with her shadows. Finally Reed sees it and realizes that she isn’t who she said she is.
The book is great, a little elementary in few spots but I am taking it as character development. If anyone had been chained from the age of 1, maimed repeatedly with no other interaction besides Nebula, I think it would make sense that she’s naive in the sense that she wants to think the best in people. I can’t wait for the next book.

This started off promising, and went downhill once she got to the academy. Why would someone with no life experience be sent to a school for delinquents? They’re going to eat her up. Wtf. I actually didn’t like any character in this book. I hate 3 out of 5 of her mates, disappointed that they’ll even get to be with her. Why does she even like them? Enough with this insta lust/love crap, we don’t like people that are mean to us! These 3 mates are so trashy, one is literally a drunk, laying on the ground and just throws up on himself… what in the world. I don’t know about you, but I aspire to read about book boyfriends that are better than this.
Fmc was meh. You are so strong, literally can rip souls from bodies, and you let others bully you? I was hoping she’d get out of that cellar and never let anyone mess with her again, but that was not the case. And I get she maybe can’t read all social cues, but you have a ring that tells you people’s intentions… I don’t like dumb chicks.
This was juvenile. I can’t even make it to 50%.

Pandora has been abused and finally her magic appears and she eats her mother’s soul. The next thing she knows she has a father Daryl who is also a soul eater. Her life drastically changes for the better. They both decide to send her to Demon Reform Academy to learn. She instantly has enemies Skel,Bram, and Dexter because she’s a noble. She becomes friends with Reed, but the nobles give her crap. Hunter is her father’s friend and her counselor, but their chemistry is intense. While trying to navigate the school, there is a danger of dark magic and a secret society. Can Pandora figure out who’s the friend or foe? Great characters and storyline Highly recommended Amazing book I love Pandora, Hunter, Reed, Dexter, Skel, and Bram and their dynamic and character development. This book has all the feels. Sarcastic humor, twist and turns, and angst. This is the first book in the series so ends on a cliffhanger. I can’t wait for the next book.

If you read a lot of these pnr rh academy books then you already know the deal. They are all pretty similar but that’s why we like them, right? So my rating is actually going to be where this book sits within the genre. I would say it’s solidly in the middle. Somewhere above arrow hart academy but below her vicious beasts? Probably same level as fortune fae academy.

Not sure about spice in the following books but this one had zero steam

This book I absolutely ate up!! The FMC having such a horrid past and being found by someone that truly takes care of her and tries to help her heal. The tragic past of constant abuse clashing with the men she is fated too brings so much angst and keeps you on the edge of your seat! The cliffhanger to this story made it to where I needed to know what happens next!

It was alright until 50%. Then nothing made sense. Didn't really care for Pandora or anyone else. Pandora constantly tries to be nice to people who legit want to hurt her and wish bad on her. Accepts invites to hangout when she knows their intentions, and then gets surprised when they fuck her over or put her in danger? I don't get her. The 3 MMCs who bullied her made no sense. They claimed to hate her because shes a noble and they aren't. Somehow they are below nobles but yet treat them like shit and like nobles are below them? Make it make sense. Every chance they got they were super toxic and then would somehow want to be around her. Nothing they showed was sweet or soft towards her. It was like beating an abused puppy you claim to hate and then wanting to be in the same room as it. I felt like the author didn't know what she wanted the MMCs personalities to be so she just made them make no sense. Might read the next one for grovel.

This is by far my favorite book of Lyra's to date. I gobbled this book up so fast, I was so upset I finished it. I know this is going to be a book I reread, just like Fate Hollow Academy.

I loved Fate Hollow Academy, so I was excited when Lyra announced she was taking us readers back to Kalista. Although the characters from Fate Hollow are mentioned several times throughout the book, this book is about Pandora and her love interests in the Demon Realm.

Before you deep dive into this book, definitely look at the trigger warnings before you start. When Lyra says there's dark themes in this book, she meant it. Also, just know this book does end on a cliffhanger and will probably leave you with as many questions as it did me.

Below may contain some minor spoilers, so keep that in mind if you want to keep reading my review.

Pandora's first 2 decades of her life are full of torture, hatred, and confinement in a cellar. That is until her father finds her and brings her into the world she was supposed to live in. Because of her upbringing she wasn't acclimated to the Demon world and the way their society works so when she is offered the chance to go to a Demon Reform Accademy, she accepts it to learn the ways of society and how she is supposed to feed.

Pandora isn't like the other common demons in this world, no. She, like her father Death, are soul-eaters. Pandora is too scared to release her powers because she doesn't want to kill anyone, so she needs to learn how to feed off of a piece of soul instead of taking the whole thing.

Because of who her father is, she's classed as a Noble, and while she doesn't agree with her fellow Noble students, who look down on the "lower" class, she also is faced with 3 Demons who hate her for being a Noble. Theses a lot of back and forth tension which these 3 demons who have issues of their own. One is obsessed with her, and wants to know all of her secrets. One leaks fear all over the place, but also is scared of the "princess" -wink- -wink-. One is a complete drunk who doesn't like her just because he's got family Noble problems.

Don't worry, there are 2 other demons who are just the sweetest towards her. One who will get vengeance for anything done to her, he's got Golden Retriever energy around her and touch her and die energy for anyone around her. Finally, there is one who is friends with her even when the whole school is scared of her, who brings her into his dreams and will create nightmares for those who bother her.

I'm convinced that anything Lyra writes is absolute gold! The FMC is always relatable that has past trauma and learns to grow and develop through her fated mates or MMCs. This is a why choose/paranormal but if you are new to that genre i would say this may be a bit difficult but only because the MMCs are all demons and closely traited. This is also a slow burn BUT Lyra is notorious for slow burn with a giant explosion imof spice in book 2! I did particularly love this FMC's trauma was a twist to what most stories tell. I can't wait for book 2!!

This book should not have been 500+ pages.
Between the bad writing, childlike dialogue, basic world building and minimal character development this should have been 200 max. Pandora annoyed me to no end and the only development she had in this book was that she could now use her abilities to literally the basic extent. Other than that she’s so unlikable and naive.
Bram, Dexter and Skel were unlikable from start to finish. All they do is bully, whine and complain.

The dialogue throughout this book was…just so bad.

0/10 in my opinion. I felt like I was reading something on watt pad.

This book has a good core plot. It just needs to be rewritten, add some beta readers and a good editor and this would be the best thing ever.

Sadly I will not be continuing with this series or this author as all the books are the same.

Everything was contrived. Nothing was organic or flowed naturally.

Good
1) Desert setting was unique.
2) Series arc was established
3) “This isn’t as flattering as you think it is.” You tell him, Daryl!

Mixed
1) The last name address protocol was an interesting idea but it ended up just making everything confusing when the story kept switching the names back and forth.

Bad
1) Writing was amateur. Examples: The three of them lurched forward, but they were frozen in their place. Were they frozen in place or did they lurch forward? I watched in horrified fascination as it parted my lips and slipped down my throat. There was no means for this person to see this happening to them since they were not in front of a mirror nor did they have a camera in their mouth.
2) Storytelling was really rough, filled with repetition and oh so over-dramatic. Example: The problem was that I hadn’t been able to shake the overwhelming need to possess Pandora, body and soul, since I first met her. Calm down dude, you just met her this morning and it isn't even lunch.
3) Ends on a huge cliffhanger.
4) Plot? What plot?
5) Everyone failed to follow-up on obvious anomalies.
6) The obsession everyone had with who was fucking who was juvenile and exhausting.
7) Female lead did not think, speak, behave or respond like someone who had been tortured every day for twenty years starting at age one.
8) Female lead's knowledge of everyday things and life was not of someone who had spent their entire lives in an underground cell receiving just one book each month from childhood to age twenty as their only education, especially when those books were mainly about dark magic.
9) Female lead's scars were originally all over her body but when she went to the academy, suddenly they was reduced to one on her upper thigh.
10) Female lead was understandably self-conscious about the upper thigh scar but instead of wearing clothing that would cover it up naturally like pants, walking shorts, knee-length or longer skirts, she chooses to wear short skirts and wrap it with a medical bandage like that wasn't going to draw attention and questions.
11) Female lead was dumb as a box of rocks.
12) Therapist male lead having romantic/sexual feelings for his female patient was icky and we won't even get into his drinking during therapy sessions.
13) These were magical creatures with knowledge of and contacts in a variety of different magical communities and the best they could come up with to help her damaged and painful vocal cords is a water bottle enchanted to stay cold?
14) The three delinquent male leads' physical descriptions were cliche to the point of parody.
15) The three delinquent males leads shared the same personality and voice.
16) Afros do not cascade.
17) That's not how you teach people (why does every author get this wrong? were you all home schooled by abusive parents?)
18) And most of all, sending an abuse victim to a reformatory to be socialized and educated made zero fucking sense. First off, exposing an abuse victim to violent, predatory criminals is just going to further traumatize them. Second off, you don't send your kid to be socialized by a bunch of criminals and misfits unless you want them to be a criminal and misfit. Thirdly, there was no one there that could actually teach her to feed. Lastly, it moved her away from her father who was the best option to teach her how to feed because (word for word from the text) “There’s no better way to learn how to eat souls than from another soul eater.” As I said at the beginning of this review: everything was contrived, nothing was organic or natural.

Very disappointing. The shadow demon Damien was my favorite lead character in this author's 'Fate Hallows Academy' series and not one of these demons lived up to his unique bite and charm.

Do not recommend.

3/5⭐️ 1/5🌶️ 4/5🎧

——• 🖤

Look, I liked the direction of the story so far but it should have been further along in the storyline then what it was considering it's just over 600 pages. I had no idea how long this was as I picked up the audiobook (recommended) and in all honesty, if I had of seen the book first, I would have left it the fuck alone seeing as the remaining 3 books in the series are also just over 600 pages EACH. I mean what in the ever loving fuck can happen to the same 6 characters that is worth being written about over that many pages... 💀💀

The characters are pretty decent and Lyra's writing style really isn't that bad, its just that there is a repetitive patten happening with multiple things throughout the book that gets on your nerves like, I don't know how many times dick face can suck on that pipe but I want to fucking SNAP it and then the amount times the FMC get's hurt by the same group of people is just bullshit... MOVE. IT. THE. FUCK. ALONG! 🙄

Despite the above, I want to know what happens so I will be continuing with the audio, I just hope it gets better 🙃

Honestly 3.5 and I'm excited for this new series. I have really liked the first book in her series before though and been let down so I am trying to not go over the top excited.

I'll say I think that her main character is more real and relatable than in the past and I think that's what really made me like the book. Her reactions are real she isn't as helpless as some of this authors other characters and I can see her being a true badass soon.

Spoilers:

As for the guys. I always struggle with a larger harem because it feels like we miss the build up of who they are individually and they end up being grouped together. We kind of had that occur with the trio because they are close friends it felt like at times they were just together for the sake of having all three mentioned. However I think she did a good job of having us understand their characters and issues they faced so that works. I will be honest and ask did anyone know really anything about Hunter? I think he ended up with the short end of the stick in this one and I hope we get more information later on.

Bring on book 2.

This was a very sweet book to read.

Pandora has an extremely rough start to life and only finds it truly beginning wfen she ends her mother's years of torture by eating her soul and killing her in the process.

She discovers that she is a soul eater, and finds her dad that didn't know she had her. He sends her to the reform school to help her find her feet in the world she knows nothing about.

She has a very delicate, sweet soul for a demon, and even more so for a soul eater. She's also considered nobility for having Death as her dad.

3 demons Skel, Shadowheart and,,,,,
Are all strangely aware of her but for their own reasons, reject those feelings and lash out her making her feel worse.

Her roomate is a noble who turns out to also be a bully..

Pandora struggles for alot of this book. But she finds peace and support in her fellow dream demon Reed nyx and her counsellor Hunter.

It is a good story and the cliffhanger is a great way to end it!

I am happy to be back in Kalista! I am really enjoying how Pandora is growing and becoming confident but is also still vulnerable. I love that she has a caring parent, so often they don't.
Reed and Hunter and sweet, caring men but with the ability to be dark to protect her
Skel, Bram and Dex are a dark theresome fighting their own battles that they somewhat take out on Pandora.
They are all drawn to her, I liked how they automatically think Fated mates. The world building is petty good. The way they talk about history and how its really the story of Fate Hollow Academy.
That ending is burned into my brain, I wish I could draw to make a picture.

I will say this is darker than Fate Hollow Academy. The spice is barley there, so a very slow burn.
