The Girl in the Painting – the gripping psychological thriller perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, Daniel Hurst and Kiersten Modglin.
Caleb Crowe is a British writer of psychological thrillers, and is fascinated by stories where extraordinary things happen to ordinary people, and the mundane is transformed into the menacing.
He’s afraid of the sea, fearful in the countryside, panicky in large open spaces and terrified of small, confined spaces. There’s nowhere, and no one, that doesn’t possess some dark, brooding anxiety just waiting to have the lid prised open and turned into a twisty, suspenseful, nerve-shredding story.
He lives in Manchester with his partner, two children and two cats, who probably have their own mysterious agendas. Whether he's navigating the urban jungle or wrestling with the daily challenges of family life, Caleb draws inspiration from the unpredictability of everyday existence.
British writer Caleb Crowe hits the ground running with his knock-out highly impressive, electrifying psychological thriller debut, THE GIRL IN THE PAINTING! Fans of Clémence Michallon’s The Quiet Tenant (My top thriller of 2023) will devour!
I knew I would love this novel; I was on the edge of my seat, from the stunning, alluring front cover to every page turn. I could not put this one down. These evil, sinister characters will keep you guessing in this web of deceit and dangerous cat-and-mouse game until the explosive ending!
The author brilliantly captures the reader with the Prologue. A car. An accident. In freezing water. Not an accident. Deliberate. Someone wants her dead.
Seline is a lovely young woman from Manchester who wants to make it in the world on her own, leaving her safe and secure childhood home and parents. She has accepted a job as an art teacher and has rented a room in a home with a family.
She is nervous and excited about her new adventure. A new job, her first ever teaching art. A new place. A new beginning.
She landed the position due to Michael, an old friend of her father's. Back in school, they were best mates and kept in touch for a while, then drifted apart. He was a governor at the school and was looking for a new art teacher. This guy, she later learns, is powerful, rich, and can open doors for her in the art world.
She arrives in Holts Hill in the country. The room she is renting could be better. Maybe she has made a mistake.
She must make this work to prove to her parents that she can make it independently. However, her dream job at St. Oswald's is not as expected, as she has a troubled teen girl in her class who is disruptive and disrespectful. The girl's dad is also a teacher at the school.
She feels the staff needs to be more supportive when she tries to report the student. She feels unwelcome at school and second-guesses herself and her decision to come here.
Next, she meets Robbie. He is handsome, dangerous, and charming. He is a bad boy; however, she has no clue how evil he is. Seline gets caught up in a romantic affair with Robbie, who lives in a run-down flat over a restaurant. At first, it was all-consuming; she felt alive.
Soon thereafter, he turns into a different person. He is dark, rough, messy, moody, manipulative, controlling, evil, and abusive. Drives uncontrollably and madly. He is not as he appears. Soon, he moved all her things into his flat, and there was no escape. He even takes her to school and picks her up. The only solace is her art.
Plus, there is a locked door in his flat, and she is dying to find out what is inside. She tries to break free of him, but he threatens to kill her. But everyone in the village seems to know him, and looks can be deceiving on the outside. What is he hiding?
She is a nervous wreck; someone destroys her drawings—sinister and scary. Robbie goes everywhere with her and even shows up at school. How will she ever escape him?
She finally meets Michael, the person responsible for helping her get the job. Can she turn to him for help? She tries to escape to her parents, and Robbie finds her and threatens to kill the parents if she tells anyone about him.
When she thinks she has found a way to escape, she learns Michael may not be who he appears to be either. What is going on? Then there is the car accident. Someone wants her dead, but why? Who can she trust?
Seline must learn more about Michael and devise a plan to save herself. But then there is another tragedy with her family, and she learns nothing or no one is as they appear.
How will she escape this madness?
WOW! If this is a debut, I cannot wait to read more by this new voice in fiction, Caleb Crowe! Inkubator Books sure knows how to crank out the winners!
THE GIRL IN THE PAINTING exceeded all my expectations and what I look for in a riveting and engrossing psychological thriller. I enjoyed the metaphors, symbolism, and paintings of the doors and shadows and how it ended.
Atmospheric, eerie, dark, sinister. THE GIRL IS THE PAINTING is like a nightmare, gas lighting, nerve-wracking, horrifying, and not for the fainthearted. However, it is suspenseful, lyrical, and twisty and will keep you on the edge of your seat. And that ending was killer!
From art, ambition, love, obsession, and revenge with some dark triggers, THE GIRL IN THE PAINTING is explosive and may be difficult for some to read. Psychologically rich, a locked-room thriller, it is intense, haunting, and heartbreaking but also focuses on resilience and survival.
I enjoyed the author's writing immensely, and I look forward to more from this new voice in fiction! Smartly written, addictive, it is unputdownable. It would make for a great movie or TV series. It also would have been fun to have a POV from Michael (an enigma). I would love to see Seline featured in a future book.
If you love dark, imaginative, twisty thrillers with menace and unreliable narrators, this one is for you. Highly recommend! I cannot wait to see what comes next. An author to watch. He is on my list, for sure!
For fans of authors Jennifer Hillier, Clémence Michallon, Lisa Jewell, Sally Hepworth, Daniel Hurst, Miranda Rijks, Eliot Stevens, Robin Mahle, Freida McFadden, and Emily Shiner.
Thanks to Inkubator Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to be introduced to this new author and an ARC for an honest opinion.
I stumbled upon the book's cover on Netgalley and was intrigued by the title and the girl. This is a fast-paced psychological thriller. I read this book in one sitting — such a page turner!
4 stars.
“... explain the dangerous appeal of a charming man who's anything but charming underneath…"
Michael Lockwood, Seline's father's friend, helps her get a new job as an art teacher. He's friendly and charming, with lots of money. He always seems to be in the back of her mind and in the background. 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘰 𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘦𝘳?
Then, she meets Robbie, who's mysterious and doesn't live life by the rules. She quickly falls for his charms, but he isn't who he seems, and realizes as quickly as she has fallen, she can't seem to get up…
Pros:
- Fast-paced writing style, easy to read - Interesting plot with twists and turns - Good character development
Cons:
- Robbie is a complete and utter jerk with controlling issues. I wanted to kick him in the nuts, hard, until they fell off. Kudos to Crowe for making me feel this way. - I wish Seline wasn't as naive, but I'm glad she got stronger towards the end. I kept screaming “red flag, red flag” concerning Robbie throughout the entire book.
I wasn't expecting to get sucked into this thriller. Caleb Crowe's debut novel, and it seems like he has been writing for years. I love the easy and fast-paced suspenseful writing style he has. I look forward to his next.
In The Girl in the Painting by Caleb Crowe, the author's writing style stands out for its quick pace and accessibility, making the book engaging. The plot unfolds with twists and turns that keep readers intrigued, and the characters undergo notable development, adding richness to the story. The writing style, especially its suspenseful quality, held my interest throughout. The ending was particularly satisfying, wrapping up the story effectively. However, there are drawbacks to the novel. Robbie, a character in the story, is depicted as an extremely unpleasant individual with controlling tendencies, evoking intense emotions that might be overwhelming for some readers. Additionally, Seline's initial naivety is a downside, though her growth towards the end is commendable. The constant warning signs about Robbie throughout the book may feel excessive. Despite the compelling writing and plot, the characterization, particularly with Robbie, could be divisive for readers. While Seline's character evolves, her initial naivety might be a point of contention. The novel provides a satisfying reading experience, albeit with some drawbacks to consider.
Seline Henderson is a 23 y/o Mancunian arriving at a small town called Statheley Bridge, so as to start her very first job as an Arts Teacher there. Thanks to a childhood friend of her beloved father she was able to catch it straight after finishing her teaching courses.
Soon enough Seline meets a young, reckless man, Robbie (28 y/o), and starts a rushed Affaire with him. Before long her now semi-official BF ends up becoming problematic for Seline. Robbie worms his way into every aspect of her life, like a Python he wraps himself round her and starts suffocating her in every possible way.
After seeing her newest art pieces at the School she teaches at, Mr. (Michael) Lockwood (her father's friend) offers the young teacher to exhibit her art at the local Art Centre, as soon as its construction is finshed of course. From there on things spiral evern further out of hand and Seline only has a few moments here and there to catch her breath, if at all.
Why does Robbie behave so secretive? Who is terrorising Seline and destroying her Art? Why are her parents, Diana and Colin, so tight lipped regarding the past and now Seline's new stage of life?
This was a problematic read. I want to be absolutely honest in my Reviews, so I will admit that after reading about 15% it got a bit too slow for my liking and I wasn't sure if I should keep on reading.
However this notion didn't last long and soon enough I was back on track, enjoying the Book.
The Author knew just where to throw the right hints but also a few red Herrings, it made the guessing game a bit harder and I loved that. Also, thank you to the Author for not rushing the last few Chapters… so done with that to be honest! The characters were well written, though I would have loved a bit more from her Dad. He was just there, and then gone again
Honestly though, I didn't like the Heroine of this book that much. She was too naïve and I had to remind myself, that she was very young and not everyone her age is as street wise these days, right? And Robbie? Don't start me on THAT one.
The last half of the Book and the Ending itself were so worth it… great work! Reading the last 3 Chapters was the most rewarding part, imho.
When I requested The Girl in the Painting, there was no description about the book on NetGalley or Goodreads, so I literally went into this book blind, and I absolutely judged it by its awesome cover. I’m so glad that I did.
This book is wild. In the About the Author it says that the author’s inspiration for this book was for wild and outlandish things happening to ordinary people, and wow, did really insane things happen to our narrator, Seline. There are some heavy domestic abuse scenes, so if this is a trigger warning for you, skip this one. It’s not light reading by any means. The writing is strong, the story line and plot were enticing, and the twist was cleverly laid out. This is a quick, action packed thriller that you don’t want to miss out on.
I’m not sure there has ever been a male character who I have hated as much I do Robbie in this book. New art teacher, Selene starts teaching at a new school where she meets “handyman” Robbie. He is physically abusive from day 1 so I hate him right away. Why does she put up with him???? It slowed down in the middle but then the twist at the end had me ….. it went from 3 stars to 4 stars in the blink of an eye! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this book in exchange for my honest review. Apparently it’s publication day today! So happy publication day!
The Girl in the Painting was one wild and crazy ride; a true definition of psychological suspense! I raced through because I had to know how it ended. A well written thought out psychological suspense with twists and turns I never saw coming? My favorite kind of story. You think you know where it's going then BOOM! You find out you were wrong all along. Which makes it that much sweeter!
Pretty quickly into the book, I felt that something was not right. Something weird was going on. During the entire book, I felt an uneasiness. It’s really kept me turning pages so quickly that I started it in the morning and by late afternoon I was finished!
Crowe’s style of writing is easy and engaging. The plot is great and the characters are great. There is more than one morally gray character in this book, but I bet you can’t figure out who they are! That was the best part for me. The twist and turns were fresh; they shocked me, literally. I finished the book and said to myself, “what just happened.” It took me a minute for my brain to process because he wrote an ultimate twist that isn’t seen coming from a mile away.
This is a new to me author, and I promise I will be reading more books by this author!
Split into four parts, which I love. The prologue is probably one of my worst fears and it was hard to read without feeling the anxiety of what Seline was experiencing. As we enter Holts Hill specifically Statheley Bridge the story begins to unfold page by page. New job, new place, head of department there’s a lot riding on Seline. I cringed when you realise who grahams daughter is. Robbie seems perfect at first but that secret locked room. Will Seline eventually get inside? Will she ever know what Robbie is hiding? The only word that really annoyed me in the book was ‘digs’ referencing to where Seline was staying.
There’s rage, magic mushrooms and so much more. It’s a difficult read in some places when you come across the topic of abuse. It’s difficult to explain the series of events that occur without giving too much away. Michael, family friend everything about me from the moment we meet him just felt off. There were so many shocking moments. I could never imagine being Seline, working in a school feeling interrogated by the head teacher. I loved reading about the terrible kids and the art. More perfectly that psychological thriller ending eeeeps.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Intrigue sets in when the wild and wonderful whirlwind of romance turns sinister. An interesting read start to finish.
I was thoroughly captivated by the cover art and description of The Girl In The Painting, which led me to request it. The plot was engaging and full of unexpected twists and turns that kept me thoroughly entertained. The author's vivid descriptions and attention to detail made the Book come alive for me, allowing me to become fully immersed in the story Overall, I found The Girl In The Painting to be a compelling read with an ending that left me thinking about the book the next day and days after
I would suggest the girl in the painting to anyone who enjoys Captivating Thrillers. However, please note that there are descriptive scenes of Abuse/Domestic Violence, so if that is something you are not comfortable with, then this may not be suitable for you.
The cover and description of this book caught my attention on NetGalley. I had low expectations that Caled Crowe exceeded.
Seline lands her first big girl job teaching, thanks to her father’s estranged childhood friend. It’s a new town and a chance for her to prove herself. Seline immediately moves in with the seemingly charming, Robbie. He’s not who he appears to be, but neither is anyone else she meets in this town.
One complaint I have is I felt like she was always in a car. The prologue is her in the car, first chapter, and what feels like every other chapter, she’s in a car. I also want closure with a few characters that I felt like didn’t get explained away well enough.
I’m giving this book 3.5 ⭐️ It was a fast paced thriller that had a good twist.
This book wasn’t for me. The beginning was very drawn out and overly descriptive to the point where I immediately had no interest. The main character’s first interaction with the man who becomes her abusive boyfriend that the blurb describes is her being terrified of him and him seeming threatening. The next time she meets him, she’s turned on and obsessive over him. It made no sense. She then immediately sleeps with him and moves right in with him. Meanwhile there’s 100 red flags warning her. As the story progresses, their relationship is even more unbelievable. None of the characters were likable and I only finished to be able to give the book a fair review. Thank you to NetGalley for my copy.
I absolutely love discovering new authors and love reading the early build up.
When Caleb Crowe, was compared to Freida McFadden and Kiersten Modglin, I knew right then, I had to check this guy out.
Well, I have to say, If McFadden and Modglin had a love child, it would be Caleb Crowe and I am so here for it.
This book is jam packed with juicy secrets and a wild twist you will never see coming.
The Girl in the Painting is ALL CONSUMING, make sure to clear your schedule before sitting down
Check out this teaser :

But when the truth is finally revealed, Selene has to re-evaluate everything as the final missing piece of the puzzle masks the entire story.
A gripping, addictive psychological thriller that follows a streak of bad decisions turning deadly and dangerous. "The girl in the painting" definitely pulls a taunt string on escape, insanity, lies cloaked in manipulation and secrets. I liked the second half of the novel more than the first. It was definitely impressive and the characters are well written.
KEEPS YOU GUESSING This book will have you saying "What the ****?" Just when you think things couldn't get worse for our main character.... they do. This book follows a young girl out on her own for the first time. She takes a teaching position at the urging of a family friend. Are there ulterior motives? Things start to go downhill right away for her. She meets a guy, the wrong guy, let me tell ya! There are twists, turns, violence, drugs, powerful people. You will be left wondering what is going to happen next? I really felt a connection to the main female protagonist, you feel her fear, guilt, shame and you stand with her the minute she starts to fight back. Some triggers the reader should be aware of: DV, SA, drugs! Everyone has secrets in this book! It is a recommended read from me! Can't wait to check out more books by this author!
This was another winner! This was just brilliant! Seline is a shy girl that becomes a strong woman. I enjoyed her growth throughout the book. I look forward to reading more from Caleb Crowe.
The Girl in the Painting by Caleb Crowe. Robbie is a kind and loving boyfriend. As long as you obey the rules. Seline is excited to be starting a new chapter. But Michael has secrets of his own, secrets that entwine with Seline's past in shocking and sinister ways… This is a new author for me. This was a really good read. I did like the cover. Twisty and gripping. I did like most of the characters. Seline was my favourite. I didn't like Robbie or Michael. There was a few surprises which I didn't see coming. I loved the plot. It was different. I liked the flow of the story. How Seline was in the end. I loved the ending. I never expected that. 4*.
The writing is descriptive and the book is enticing. This is a psychological thriller. The vibe is atmospheric and mysterious. The characters have a mysterious demeanour. The author spills the secrets one by one. As soon as Robbie’s dark side unveils, Seline who is doing her first job as an art teacher in a quaint Yorkshire Village, finds herself trapped and it becomes hard for her to escape from him. Somehow she finds her way out but soon she gets tangled in secrets entwining with her past.
Brilliant! I could not put the book down. The setting was visual and the story intense. There were times that I wanted to read ahead because the suspense was high. It did not end the way I expected, but was better than I would have imagined. I would love to see a follow up story to see what happened with the characters involved.
A psychological thriller mixed with a bad relationship is the best way to describe this book. Seline is a new art teacher who falls in love with Robbie. She soon realizes Robbie is not the man she thought he was and finds herself afraid for her life. TW: abusive relationships. This is a thrilling book that kept me guessing. There are a lot of twists so just when you think you’ve figured out one another one comes up. If you are looking for an enjoyable thrilling read this is for you.
This was sooooo good! Throughout there are scenes that some might find unsettling due to their nature - abuse, control and domestic violence.
I was sucked into the plot from the opening pages and that was it, I couldn't put it down. I devoured the book in two sittings and absolutely loved it!
It was fast paced, engaging and such a clever twisty plot. Throughout the suspense and tension were palpable, you knew something big was coming, you just didn't know when.
The characters were three dimensional and felt quite credible.
As debuts go it's pretty impressive and I'm already looking forward to reading more from Crowe in the future if they're all as good as this!!
The story follows Seline, who gets her first adult job and leaves her parents’ house. Not being able to adapt to her new life, she finds comfort in Robbie; he is not what she thought he was. Although feeling trapped, Seline wanders through the meanders of the psychological thriller. Seline’s character is not likable; however, observing her transformation during the book was intriguing. Not for certain moments when I wished to shake her and make her understand everything, but the intricate plot and fast pace hooked me until the end.
This would’ve been a five-star read for me had I liked Seline more, but I still recommend it to anyone looking for an intense psychological thriller.
Thank you to Inkubator Books, Zoé from ZooLoo’s Book Tours, and the author for allowing me to read and review this book.
Seline lands a job as an art teacher at a school an hour away from her hometown. She gets the job through Michael, an old friend of her parents who seem to have her best interest at heart.
Her first week on the job, she meets Robbie, who does odd jobs around the school. They start dating and things move really fast. Next thing she knows, they’re living together. All is great at first, but then things go sour.
He keeps one of the rooms in the apartment locked and has told Seline to steer clear but curiosity killed the cat and when she finds out what he’s hiding, everything begins to spiral down.
Robbie has mood swings and when he’s not charming, he’s controlling and abusive. He begins to hurt Seline and she has a hard time coping. She loses all her self confidence and starts doubting everything she does. The only thing keeping her sane is her drawings.
She decides to reach out to a Michael for help since he’s been soo giving. But she slowly learns that Michael has a secret agenda so now she has to come up with another plan.
I absolutely loved the author’s writing style. It was a suspenseful and fast paced book that kept me engaged the entire time and the ending was very gratifying.
This is the first book that I've read by this author - but was drawn in by the front cover which I found really intriguing. This book had everything I look for in a great psychological thriller - I loved this!
Selene can't wait to be starting her first job away from home, based in a quaint little Yorkshire village school as their art teacher. When she meets Robbie, she can't get enough of the excitement that he brings to her life.....but we soon realise that there's a little more to Robbie than we originally spotted!
I love Selene! She's organised and sensible and her passion for art makes her the perfect fit for inspiring the 'kids' at school. The vibrant contrast between her current life and the impulsive nature of Robbie is clear to see, but they do say opposites attract! I was a little wary of Robbie straight away and when his true nature reveals itself, I found him to be really creepy! Throw in family friend Michael to give us some hope, but events just stepped up a notch further!
I really liked the format and presentation of this one. There's a great hook from the prologue at the start and this immediately had me turning the pages to find out what was going on and how Selene was going to fair throughout.
The writing was just perfect from start to finish! I became totally immersed and really struggled to put this one down, racing through it in only a couple of sittings. The tension and suspense builds up quickly and had me on the edge of my seat!
A brilliant read - Definitely an author to watch and I can't wait to see what comes next....
This is the second book I've read by Caleb Crowe, although this was his first. Crowe does an awesome job of building atmosphere from his descriptions of the town's buildings and inhabitants. Every character seems to have an agenda or secrets they want to keep buried.
You immediately feel connected to and empathise with the main character, Seline, a recently qualified 23-year-old teacher, as she embarks on her first teaching position as head of the art department in a local school within the new village she's moved to. From the start, you feel her trepidation and loneliness.
This is such a flawlessly crafted story, with each tiny clue slowly building, hinting at the secrets to come. It's a journey of discovery for Seline, and as a reader, you take every scary, tentative step with her. The ending is perfection!
Please also check out The Wrong Neighbour by the same author. By his own description, he writes about extraordinary things happening to ordinary people. I'm here for it and look forward to his next release.
I am definitely in the minority with this book. The cover and the domestic thriller made me want to read this book. I just couldn’t get into the book and this was a DNF for me sadly. Something about the writing style just didn’t flow and was not easy to read. Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for this copy.
Caleb Crowe’s The Girl in the Painting is a new psychological thriller that grabs on and doesn’t let go! The main character is Seline who is newly graduated and is about to begin her first job as an art teacher thanks to a favor from a childhood friend of her father’s. She meets a charismatic man named Robbie and begins a rather rushed relationship with him. He becomes secretive and controlling with Seline. Meanwhile, her father’s childhood friend becomes more and more involved in her life and she is left wondering why and what his intentions are. Many secrets are revealed throughout the book and Seline is left fearing for her life after a series of devastating events.
I absolutely loved this book! To begin with, the cover art was so beautiful and intriguing I wanted to know more. The relationship between Seline and Robbie accurately depicts an unhealthy abusive relationship. There are tiny details in the beginning that clue you in to his behavior and intentions. Seline is young and naive. Perhaps she missed some of the signs, but I think this is why it’s such a relatable story. There are scary, violent things happening all around us and sometimes they are lurking behind beautiful people that you wouldn’t usually suspect.
There were many things about the book I liked and it’s obvious the author is a very good writer. The prose is beautiful and I like the way he is so descriptive in some passages such as, “The walls are a yellowy cream that falls halfway between a paint shade and the nicotine staining from when smoking inside was allowed. The patterned carpet somehow manages to be gaudy and depressing at the same time, with a threadbare track worn from the door they’ve just entered to the bar.” The settings were very visual and the story was intense. I liked the fast pace of the book, the suspenseful turns and twists, and the realistic flawed characters.

Prepare to be swept away into a whirlwind of intrigue and suspense with "The Girl in the Painting." This book is a riveting rollercoaster ride, filled to the brim with tantalizing secrets and an unexpected twist that will leave you reeling.
Once you start reading, be warned: you won't be able to put it down. The plot is expertly crafted, weaving through unexpected twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. The author's vivid descriptions and meticulous attention to detail breathe life into the story, immersing you completely in its world.
I wholeheartedly recommend "The Girl in the Painting" to anyone who enjoys captivating thrillers. However, it's important to note that the book contains descriptive scenes of abuse and domestic violence, which may not be suitable for all readers.
Overall, I found this book to be an enthralling read, with an ending that lingered in my thoughts long after I turned the final page. The writing is masterful, the storyline is gripping, and the twist is ingeniously executed. Don't miss out on this fast-paced, action-packed thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.

The controlling partner trope is a popular one in the psychological thriller genre but this was different from all the rest. Firstly, the guy usually starts off being so perfect….nicely dressed, well spoken, considerate and rich with expensive and immaculately kept house and car but Robbie is the exact opposite. Usually I would be understanding as to why she would fall for this guy but with Seline I just kept thinking “why?!?”
The plot was fast paced, unique and unpredictable. I enjoyed it from beginning to end.
I would love to read more from this author. Hopefully the wait isn’t too long…
