PAUL CELAN (1920-1970) ialah salah seorang penyair bahasa Jerman terpenting di zaman pasca perang dunia kedua. Lahir di kota Cernauti di Bukovina, Rumania, berlatar belakang yahudi, dan berbahasa ibunda Jerman, Celan kehilangan ibu bapa dan rakan-rakan kesayangannya akibat Holokus. Puisi Celan bukan sahaja muncul sebagai cermin kesengsaraan peribadi namun sebagai Gegenwort, kata lawan, yang membalas kekejaman sejarah.

Paul Celan

Poet, translator, essayist, and lecturer, influenced by French Surrealism and Symbolism. Celan was born in Cernăuţi, at the time Romania, now Ukraine, he lived in France, and wrote in German. His parents were killed in the Holocaust; the author himself escaped death by working in a Nazi labor camp. "Death is a Master from Germany", Celan's most quoted words, translated into English in different ways, are from the poem 'Todesfuge' (Death Fugue). Celan's body was found in the Seine river in late April 1970, he had committed suicide.

Terjemahan saudari Pauline Fan sangat, sangat, sangat gurih.

Dan kepuitisan Celan diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Melayu membuka pelbagai pintu kemungkinan. Terasa segar dan dinamik. Sesungguhnya, terjemahan merupakan salah satu jawapan untuk memartabatkan bahasa Melayu.

Antara buku penting perlu dibaca oleh pemula puisi.
