BOOK REVIEW: UNSAID
AUTHOR: LAKSHITA BHARGAVA

• In this world where communication often leads to misunderstandings, the unspoken words left the most profound impact on someone's life. The author Lakshita Bhargava did a great job giving a life to her book UNSAID through an immigrant family with the themes of love, loss, sacrifice and escapism. 🦋

• This simple book has two worlds in it - one that is Leena leaving behind and another one which she is trying to build. Leena Singh and her son Evan Jr. share a distant relationship with each other. Lenna had to sacrifice her own happiness for her own son's happiness. The emotional journey that this book is revealing is navigating through individual unspoken journeys. 💕

• The author's writing style is simple yet attractive. She was able to portray human emotions with grace and promise. The story is full of tenderness and moving between past and present. How the author uses SILENCE as a weapon is super interesting. The silence between Leena and Evan Jr. speaks louder than anything else. It's better to say that this mother son relationship should be watched out of any broader context. ✨️

• Challenges that come with an immigrant, offers the readers to dive into the minds of these characters. They're not giving up the vibes of identity crisis but rather they are showing how it's not easy to make your own identity on a foreign land. 🌙

• Though the book put me hooked for the rest of my reading session, some parts felt slow paced. I think some readers like me would love to read a fast paced novel with these characters. The depth of the story, emotions and the characters are unknowingly interesting. 🥂

• UNSAID is a tender and emotionally charged short novel which also somehow defines our emotional traumas with a great potential. It is a book that reminds us about silence that is as powerful as a voice coming out from someone with a force. If you are looking for a story that is much about introspection with unsaid words - UNSAID is the one which is simply there for you to be understood. 🐋

Imagine a story that tugs at the heartstrings, weaving a tapestry of emotions so real, it feels like your own. This is the essence of Lakshita Bhargava's "Unsaid." Bhargava, with her linguistic flair and deep understanding of the immigrant experience, paints a vivid picture of longing and belonging in her latest masterpiece, following her debut hit, "Mixed Emotions."

At the heart of "Unsaid" lies Leena, an immigrant's daughter, and her son, Evan Jr., entangled in a web of unspoken emotions. The narrative revolves around Leena's abrupt departure and her dramatic return after 15 years, igniting a custody battle for Evan Jr. This storyline elevates "Unsaid" above typical family dramas, plunging readers into a whirlpool of emotions.

Bhargava’s writing is a breath of fresh air - clear, poignant, and utterly captivating. Her narrative voice is a blend of simplicity and depth, masterfully capturing the complex tapestry of human emotions. Bhargava's storytelling is enlivened by her vivid descriptions and dialogues that hit right at the heart, making each page of "Unsaid" a journey in itself.

The characters in "Unsaid" are a marvel – rich, layered, and incredibly real. Leena and Evan Jr. are not just characters in a book; they are living, breathing beings with whom one can instantly connect. The novel brilliantly explores themes of familial bonds and personal sacrifice, presenting these universal concepts in a fresh, compelling light.

Bhargava skillfully maintains a rhythm in her storytelling that keeps you hooked, with twists that are surprising yet believable. The back-and-forth between past and present is not just a narrative technique but a window into the souls of her characters, enhancing the reader’s engagement and empathy.

"Unsaid" is rich with themes that speak to the human condition - love, loss, and the intricate dance of family relationships. It delves into the immigrant narrative, shedding light on the sacrifices for future generations. These themes are woven seamlessly into the story, making "Unsaid" a mirror reflecting our own lives and choices.

Reading "Unsaid" is an emotional rollercoaster – it's a book that will make you laugh, cry, and feel everything in between. The emotional depth of Leena’s journey and Evan Jr.’s longing are particularly moving, leaving an indelible mark on your heart.

The novel's prowess lies in its ability to create characters that are profoundly relatable and a narrative that is emotionally rich. Bhargava’s skill in crafting intense emotional scenes is nothing short of brilliant, with certain passages leaving an everlasting impact. While captivating, the narrative sometimes lingers a tad too long on emotional reflections, which may affect the pacing for some readers. A more streamlined approach could have amplified the story’s impact.

For me, "Unsaid" was more than a book; it was an experience. The themes of immigration and sacrifice resonated deeply, and Bhargava’s narrative style was both refreshing and engaging.

"Unsaid" by Lakshita Bhargava is not just a book; it’s an emotional journey. It’s a must-read for anyone who cherishes stories that speak directly to the soul. Its minor flaws are easily overshadowed by its overwhelming strengths, making it a highly recommended piece of literary art. I am eagerly awaiting more gems from Bhargava's treasure trove of storytelling.

There’s a quiet weight to stories that explore the spaces we leave unspoken—those lingering questions and unresolved feelings that shape our lives in ways we often don’t fully realize. Unsaid deftly navigates this terrain, peeling back layers of emotion with honesty and compassion. It’s a story that doesn’t shout but whispers, inviting readers to sit with the complexities of human connection, regret, and the possibility of redemption.

At its core, the novel examines the aftermath of a choice made fifteen years ago—when she left him. The reasons are left intentionally ambiguous, allowing the reader to reflect on the myriad factors that can drive someone to walk away from a past lover. The narrative’s strength lies in its unflinching honesty about the lingering impact of that decision. It captures the subtle, almost imperceptible ways in which loss and longing stay with us, shaping our perceptions and fears, even when we try to move on.

The story’s structure is thoughtfully crafted, alternating between the past and present. This approach provides a layered perspective—one that reveals how memories can distort and distortions can obscure truth. It’s a reminder that understanding someone’s history often requires us to confront our own biases and assumptions. The pacing is gentle yet compelling, allowing moments of introspection to breathe while maintaining a steady rhythm that pulls the reader deeper into the characters’ inner worlds.

The characters are drawn with care and nuance. She, with her inner dialogue and quiet hesitations, embodies the universal struggle of facing unresolved pain. He, Evan Jr., is portrayed as a star—charismatic and liked by many—yet there’s an undeniable sadness that shadows him. This contrast invites reflection on how appearances can mask deeper wounds, and how everyone carries burdens we may never fully see. The author’s compassionate tone ensures these characters are human in their imperfections and vulnerabilities, fostering empathy rather than judgment.

The themes of Unsaid resonate on many levels. It’s about the courage it takes to confront the past and the hope that, perhaps, forgiveness can be found—not just for others, but for oneself. The story acknowledges that healing isn’t linear and that sometimes, the hardest part is simply facing what’s been left unsaid for so long. It’s an honest exploration of love’s enduring complexity, and the ways in which silence can be both a shield and a barrier.

Writing style-wise, the prose is accessible yet lyrical, capturing the subtleties of emotion without overstatement. The language feels authentic, mirroring the quiet strength of the characters’ inner worlds. The author’s effort to craft a story that’s both relatable and thought-provoking is evident, and the result is a narrative that invites reflection without feeling heavy-handed.

In the end, Unsaid is a gentle reminder that the stories we carry—those unsaid truths—shape us more than we often realize. It’s a story that encourages compassion, both toward others and ourselves, and underscores the importance of facing our truths with honesty and kindness. It’s a quiet, powerful testament to the enduring human spirit and the possibility of finding peace amid the unresolved.

This book isn’t just about the past; it’s about the delicate, ongoing process of understanding, forgiving, and moving forward—however uncertain that path may be.

She decided to write stories and her first book, a story for children, is titled “Mixed Emotions!” Author Lakshita now lives in New Delhi, the capital of India, where she trains on life skills, English and Spanish. Lakshita Bhargava's "Unsaid" is an agonizing exploration of family silence, the sacrifices that silence demands, and the psychological burden of immigration. The focus of this novel is Leena Singh, an immigrant mother who ultimately makes the impossibly difficult decision to abandon her son Evan Jr. so he can have a better life and receive fatherly love that she is unable to provide.Brought up by Evan Sr. A man characterized by emotional absence. Evan Jr. struggles with abandonment and identity, while Leena's return fifteen years later awakens old unresolved tensions and tenuous hopes.
"Analytical Assessment"

Bhargava does an exceptional job storytelling with emotional depth. She does not just tell a story. She reveals the silences that exist between words, the insurmountable weight of making decisions when you have no options and the threat of losing love. The immigrant experience is presented honestly, depicting how isolation of accepting cultural loss or desertion can break relationships. The narration is crisp without being trite and the characters, especially Leena is quite human, flawed, and resilient.
Positives
1. Emotional richness- the characterization of hesitation, insecurity and desire is excellent.
2. Characterization: Leena and Evan Jr. are well-developed, their trajectories tragic and authentic.
3. Themes: Love, sacrifice, and identity are thematized with sensitivity and understanding.
4. Narrative style: Bhargava's prose is neatly balanced between simplicity and emotional intensity, so that every page seems a piece of private conversation.

What I Found Most Enjoyable:

Bhargava's ability to articulate the "unsaid." Those unsaid feelings will live in a person's life with more weight than any word could possibly carry, are pathosic and poignant.
Rating: 4.7/5 — An under the radar but heavy novel that will continue to resonate with you long after the last page has disappeared.

Lakshita Bhargava’s Unsaid is, metaphorically, a soft voice of emotion casting forth a very richly emotional tale of minor heartbreaks and little known truths of a fractured family. At the core, there is Leena, the immigrant mother, who makes the agonizing choice of leaving her son, Evan Jr., amidst hopes that he will feel the love of a father in return. What follows is a complexly layered narrative of love and sacrifice, yearning, and the aftermath of choices taken in silence.

The writing is just simple enough but evocative and can connect the reader with the characters and their inner worlds. Leena’s return after fifteen years is coated in all sorts of hesitation and vulnerability, while the emotional journey of Evan Jr. is depicted with an emotionally raw honesty: the confusion, resentment, yearning. The whole thing is added to by the immigrant experience-a heavy tension between personal aspirations and duties toward family.

What makes Unsaid so memorable is its ability to fill the space of human emotions yet keep its language straightforward. The relationship between Leena and Evan Jr. is fragile and true, and Bhargava never shies away from the awkwardness of a reunion. Her story is like a soft-spoken conversation: tender, sincere, and wonderfully human.

This book is not only about what is said, it is also about everything that is not said. Bhargava finds the heart of her book in that silence. Unsaid is a poignant reminder that the truths are sometimes the hardest to speak.

Perfect for anyone who enjoys family dramas that are emotionally complex.

This is a story about loss, absence, sacrifices, silent sufferings and more. A story which explores the impact of immigration on the life of a common person.

When Leena finds herself in a precarious situation where her stay in the country is at stake, she has to part with her son to ensure his safety. But can she actually ensure a safe space for her son? Does her son receive the care he deserves with his father? This premise makes this story profound and thought provoking.

The story in just a few pages exploring the themes of absent parents, lack of emotional support for a child, the impact of dysfunctional home etc. Tough decisions often taken with good conscience do not result in the positive result often expected. The characters in this story portray the inner turmoils, self doubt and guilt which impact a person realistically in these situations.

The story is character driven and focuses on the child left behind by his mother in the care of his father. His compromise with an uninvolved father and his father’s irresponsible actions depict a maturity. This maturity often comes before age in children of troubled homes. The emotional storytelling and the personal narrative style reaches the reader. The author has put down a believable and pragmatic story capturing the character’s upheaval and conundrums.

A short read which can be completed in one sitting and which will help the reader understand the impact of certain decisions and the deep impact they can have in one’s lives.

Lakshita Bhargava's "Unsaid" is a moving examination of the intricacies that emerge in families, resolving issues of love, identity, and the unsaid feelings that have the power to determine our fates. The protagonists of the story are Evan Jr. and Leena, an immigrant woman's daughter. The story is made more complex by delving into the "unsaid" parts of the narrative. The narrative is skillfully advanced by the author's deft use of silence and unsaid feelings as potent instruments, which build suspense and expectation. In keeping with the characters' need for resolution, we readers get sucked into the maze of unresolved emotions. "Unsaid" is beautifully expressive prose that deftly conveys the core of the characters' inner turmoil.

Bhargava's writing skillfully combines reflection and a sense of urgency, resulting in a gripping story that holds readers' attention from beginning to end. Because of the well-balanced pacing, the story's emotional impact develops gradually. To sum up, "Unsaid" is a powerfully emotional and thought-provoking book that deftly examines the complex relationships between family, identity, and the lasting effects of suppressed feelings. The skill with which Lakshita Bhargava tells stories comes through, making a lasting impression on readers who will find themselves thinking back on the untold stories in their own life.

”But the pain in her gut, the ache in her heart for her baby never went away. No matter how much she smiled, laughed or tried to pour herself into her work”

- Lakshita Bhargava, Unsaid

The cover and the title, gave me an impression that it was a love story but Bhargava's work outlined the strength of familial bonds, importance of mental health, how sisterhood and friendship can sustain ties deeper than blood. Leena is portrayed to be a strong woman with vulnerabilities that tied back to her son. The writing style is kept simple, accessible to the readers so that they can deeply resonate with the themes. The story intricately weaves complexity of relationships with emotional nuance, revealing how love, loss, and personal growth often coexist beneath the surface of everyday interactions. The character sketches and carefully crafted dialogues shine through the minimal descriptions. The flashbacks that are introduced at the right time, drive the narrative forward giving much needed depth to Leena's character. The deliberate pauses added in the story speaks louder than what words can convey.

”You know you can't believe anything anyone says, not all the way. Everyone tells things from their perspective.”

This book was really nice. It was short but had lots of feelings and made me feel hopeful. It was simple and made me happy and touched my heart.

A mother's love is incredibly strong and can conquer any emotion. I felt Leena's pain when she had to be separated from her son. She loved her son deeply, but her fear has forced her to stay away.

I really liked Charlene's character the one who kept the family together and always helped Leena and her nephew. She was supportive and played a big role in their lives.

Evan Jr. was really brave and smart, especially for his age. It was touching to see him wanting to achieve something good for himself. He showed a lot of courage and intelligence, and it was heartwarming to witness his determination to succeed.

The end was really good as it showed that despite all the hardships one face, there's always a glimmer of hope, we just have to wait for the right time and grab it when we see it.

Writing style, characterisation, plot building, entire story was 10 on 10 and I will highly recommend this hopeful story to everyone. I just loved everything in this story.

The book is about everything that remains unspoken. Sometimes we stay silent to protect someone, sometimes to survive, and sometimes because we simply do not have the words. Lakshita Bhargava captures this unsaid space beautifully. Her writing is gentle yet powerful, weaving a story that touches on familial love, personal struggle, and the complexity of diasporic identity. The emotions rise not just from what is spoken but from what hangs between the characters in silence.

The protagonist, Leena, lives in the constant pull of contrasts. She exists between belonging and alienation, between love and loss, between expectations and reality. The narrative places her in a world that feels both intimate and cinematic, with characters who are flawed yet achingly real. Their relationships are not tidy or easy, and that is what makes them feel alive.

What makes “Unsaid” stand out is its restraint. It never shouts its themes but allows them to settle slowly in your heart. It is a short read, but every page carries weight. For readers who enjoy stories that move gently yet deeply, and for those who appreciate layered emotional journeys, this book is a perfect companion.

The book vividly talks about numerous sensitive themes like family, love, loss and separation. Leena has been compelled to leave her son with his father because of the son's safety. She soon leaves the country but the boy is not happy with his father due to his lack of responsibility. The mother has taken a bold decision in order to ensure a safe future for her child but is it really fruitful?

The author has woven the raw human emotions intricately and described the pain of separation between a family with intense words. "That man had hurt her. And her son needed his father. Didn't she see what happened to little boys who grew up without one?"

Leena Singh as an immigrant knew the important of raising a child with his father's love because of which she made the sacrifice and hard choice of leaving his son Evan Jr. with his dad Evan Jones. Both were caught in their inner struggles and were trying their best in whatever way they could. 😃
Read to find out was Leena's decision a good one? 👶👪

This book is an emotional family read portraying the emotions of love, loss and sacrifice.💔

Totally love how the book has an index, it just helps me prepare for the read. The book is divided into 19 short chapters. 📖

I was hooked to it throughout, couldn't keep it down. Loved the character development, the flow of the story, how the emotions were so beautifully expressed; the importance and need of being courageous and giving second chances, loved how it is depicted as well!

Definitely recommended!!!

Your perception about life, society and relationships decide your choices. What seems right to you, may not seem right to the other because of the difference in perception.
Unsaid by Lakshita Bhargava deals with such a choice of a mother whose perception forces her to let go of her son.
But the question is will the son understand the circumstances under which his mother had let him go or will his perception of an ideal mother create a wall between them.
The book delves deep into the unsaid emotions of the human mind, that forms the foundation of life altering decisions.
But at some point what is unsaid has to be spoken to heal the scars those unsaid emotions have delivered.
Definitely Leena's and Jr Evan's story will be an emotional roller coaster for all those who enjoy a good fiction that has both depth and reasoning.

Unsaid is a story about wounds that go unhealed in relationships and all the feelings, thoughts and opinions that are left unspoken & unexpressed in the process.

Unsaid portrays a heartfelt picture of the complexity in familial relationships showing the messy, raw and painfully real side of it.

Set against the emotionally charged backdrop of immigration, it follows a bond of father, son and estranged mother constantly tested by life’s brutal realities. Financial instability, emotional distance, and cultural dissonance form the crucible in which their relationship is forged, broken, and mended.

This novel is a deep dive into the silent struggles of a fractured family navigating the storms of life, sacrifice, and identity.

The writing is simple with depth and the dialogues flow naturally. If you’re drawn to emotional narratives and family dramas, Unsaid can be a good read.

The Unsaid is story of Evan Sr. And Leena, both married and separated because of physical abuse and manipulation and 2 contrast personalities Leena hard working future oriented and fighter but Evan was cunning and believed in shortcut to success which became his life policy and brought him close to death' by robbers and police action against him.

There son became the collateral damage because he got best of both personality after Left with him with his father after he threatened her to be deported 15 was disaster for Evans but her paternal aunt was support system.

The story worked out fine and a small adventure of dysfunctional family and child trauma but with a happy ending the author came to conclusions for all the characters in the book to get justice and finish.
