The most important night of the year is drawing near . . . but not without a little trouble from the Underworld Dullsville's newest night-faring intruder may be only a tween, but Raven knows that Valentine Maxwell, the younger sibling of two nefarious vampires, is a full-size menace. Valentine becomes even more of a threat when he befriends her brother, Billy. Raven must try to shield Billy, even as the biggest excitement of the year approaches . . . attending prom with her immortal love, Alexander. And while Alexander is one kind of vampire—sweet—Raven soon learns Valentine is another. Could Valentine somehow know Raven's private thoughts about turning into a vampire?
Before I took pen to paper, I was an actress. I attended a local university majoring in theatre and spent a summer in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts where I learned about the “Old Bard” from amazingly talented teachers.
When I returned from London, I relocated to Chicago where I lived for five years. There, I graduated from the Second City Training Center and performed improv, Shakespeare, comedies and dramas--I even sang and danced on a cruise boat--without falling in Lake Michigan! A classmate of mine from Second City and I created and performed a two woman show for a year before I braved it alone doing stand-up comedy. It was during this time I began to write an adult novel about a rock star--I had always enjoyed writing...
Fast forward a couple of years along with a move home where I was performing “stand-up” at comedy clubs in the area. On a plane to LA to decide my fate-- “to move to LA or not to move to LA” that is the question, my big bro, Mark, coincidentally with the same last name as mine (author of PRINCES IN EXILE, DREAMS OF THE SOLO TRAPEZE and STARCROSSED) handed me a young adult book he found at the library he thought I’d like to read during the flight.
As I read the book, I thought, ‘I can do this!’
I returned from LA, and instead of moving there, I wrote my story about the rock star as a young adult novel and called it JOHNNY LIGHTNING. Mark, my writing mentor, edited JL for me. He was kind enough to send the manuscript to his publisher in Belgium--Facet--and they published it! In Dutch!
I was now on a new life path!
In 2001 HarperCollins made me an offer I couldn’t refuse! Not only was HarperCollins going to publish TEENAGE MERMAID, but it was in a language I could read and book stores I could walk into! HarperCollins also bought VAMPIRE KISSES and COMEDY GIRL.
It was a dream come true!
Since beginning my new life path, VAMPIRE KISSES, TEENAGE MERMAID, and MY MOTHER, THE CLOWN have been published by Facet in Belgium and JOHNNY LIGHTNING has been published in Germany by Ravensburger.
Then my fabulous editor at HarperCollins asked me for a sequel to VAMPIRE KISSES! HarperCollins published VAMPIRE KISSES 2--KISSING COFFINS and now the soon to be released VAMPIRE KISSES 3--VAMPIREVILLE. I am currently writing VAMPIRE KISSES 4!
When I'm not writing about the love affair between vampire obsessed, goth girl Raven and my favorite mysterious dark-eyed hottie, Alexander Sterling, I enjoy working on my other novels, shopping for Hello Kitty items, and attempting to gain control of the remote from my boyfriend.
This is one of my fave throwbacks to my teen years - Ellen Schreiber and her Vampire Kisses series. To say I was obsessed with this series is an absolute understatement. Recently, I picked this book up again and decided to throw myself into this series, and I still love it!
This series is full of cute-sy YA romance with Alexander and Raven. The book is written for a younger audience, but if you're like me and love sinking away into a fantastical world then it will be no issue to you. If you're expecting a "True Blood-esque" novel, then you've come to the wrong place.
The fourth book in this series, Dance with a Vampire, continues Alexander and Raven's epic love story. Except, this time around we've got more crazy antics that the pair have to deal with. Valentine is now up to her trouble, making it seem impossible for our love birds to have a happy ending.
A note for the reader: These books are relatively short, which makes them a fun, sweet, and smooth read. It's really easy to binge all of these books in a day if you have the nerve to. I read the first four books (back in the day) on a bus ride to a school swim meet. I re-read these books many times because of how short and fun they were. So, it's not a big time commitment if you read these babies one by one.
Final note: The manga version of this series was one of the first mangas I ever read and made me fall in love with that "genre" (is genre the right word? Probably not). The pictures were beautiful, the story was magical and I'm glad it got me so into reading! Thank you Ellen for being one of my early reading addictions. Hopefully I'll find some more newer books by her soon! Her writing just vibes well with my reading style.
I'd highly recommend these books. They are on the younger side of YA, but they are funny, sassy and absolutely adorable. My biggest con for this whole series was that it ended! I loved each book and I really want more by this author. So many YA novels take themselves way to seriously and try to make the teen be an adult. This series makes Raven be a fun, young girl who makes mistakes along the way (but she somehow gets an epic romance out of it).
Raven and her true love, Alexander, sleep in a coffin; 11 year old vampire Valentine is interested in tree houses; Billy Boy and his nerd-mate Henry are busy with Project Vampire and Dullsville High's Prom Night is just around the corner.
Don’t pay attention to my rating, these books were written for much younger readers than me. If I had read them when I was 14, I’d probably be in love with them.
Still, for some reason that I can’t explain, this series always puts a smile on my face. Maybe it’s because of the innocence of the characters. Maybe it’s because Raven and Alexander are so cute together.
Whatever the reason, Vampire Kisses is always a fun, fast read, written in an adorable way by Ellen Schreiber. I so much want some of them Hello Batty and Olivia Outcast accessories. ^^
I decided to review all eight of these books together, as I pretty much read them all back to back and I don't think I would be able to go back and review them all individually.
Firstly, this is a series that I had known about for a while, but wasn't really too sure what the books were about. Going from the titles it's obvious that they are about vampires, but apart from that I hadn't really looked into them too much. One day in December, bored I decided to give the first book a go and see how I liked it.
All eight books are very short, not as short as a novella. But they are short, I'm pretty sure I averaged about 2 of these books a day while I was reading them. Although they are short they are enjoyable. I would say they are aimed at a much younger audience than typical YA books. The writing in them is simple and straightforward making them that much easier to glide through one book to the next in the series, to me they all seemed to tie together which makes writing individual reviews on them too hard.
The main character Raven is likeable and funny. Although she does come across very young and immature for her age. I am used to reading YA novels where the female main character is usually much wiser and mature for her age. This is another reason why I feel these books are marketed to the tween market.
The plot itself is captivating and is full of twists and turns. There are quite a few laugh out loud moments as well which keeps the tone of the book rather light hearted. I did enjoy the different aspects of all the books, and the introducing of the new vampires to the town. I really liked the idea of the covenant ceremony to bond vampires for life, that was something I haven't really seen much of in other vampire books.
There isn't really anything negative to say about these books at all, they are fun, light and easy to read. I'm glad I read them all back to back as I don't think I would go back to them if I had only read one or two, they don't really have that captivating element some YA series's do, although they are enjoyable.
To me they were a nice break from some my heaver and thicker books that I need to get through, which was just what I needed at the time I read them. I am looking forward to the release of book 9 in the series, which I think is the last one.
In this continuation of Raven and Alexander's story, Valentine Maxwell, Jagger's younger brother, has arrived in Dullsville and appears to be targeting Raven's brother. Raven fears that this might be some sort of revenge plot because of the issues that she, Alexander, and Valentine's siblings dealt with in the past, so with Alexander's help, she tries to uncover what's going on.
At the same time, Raven is having doubts and worries about her dream of becoming a vampire. She wants to be with Alexander and she knows that he loves her just as much as she loves him, so when Valentine threatens to tell her vampire lover about her secret worries, she fears that her relationship with him might become more complicated, or that it might not even survive at all.
The Vampire Kisses series is such an enjoyable series. The books are perfect for when you want a short read after tackling a long, complex book or if you're trying to ease yourself from a reading slump. While the writing style might be a bit simpler than in other young adult books, it's still a great read for fans of vampire love stories.
Even at the fourth volume in this series, Raven is still the funny, quirky, unique character that was introduced to readers in the first book. She is so, so likeable, and I find her sense of style, her hopes and dreams, and her love for vampires endearing. She actually reminds me a lot of myself. It's nice to have goths or alternative individuals within fiction that aren't the personification of the gloom-and-doom stereotype.
Alexander remains the somewhat cliche, swoon-worthy, gothic vampire, love interest that Raven fell for in the first book. I find him just as endearing as Raven, with his romantic gestures and dark style. However, I have to say that I was a bit disappointed with his character in this novel. I was considering Raven's fear that Alexander would, for whatever reason, reject her when she admitted her worries about becoming a vampire. This made me wonder what might be going on in their relationship, if he might not be as sweet as the author shows us on the page. I mean, I think most people would make sure that their partners don't think they might leave them over legitimate fears concerning becoming what is basically a whole other, paranormal or supernatural, species? It seems like common sense, and Alexander must have failed Raven in some way if she was worrying over this so much.
This book ended with a rather sad cliffhanger, though not a hopeless one. I'm glad that I own the next book so that I can read about what happens next sooner rather than later! This is a series that I like to come back to, it's one that I think I'll read until it ends.
Overall, a very enjoyable book. While it raises somewhat frustrating questions concerning Raven and Alexander's relationship, I honestly think that these questions add some intrigue and a bit of suspense to the story.
I recommend this series to fans of YA vampire romances. If you're looking for a short paranormal read, this series is for you.
I absolutly LOVED this book, I loved the whole series! An awewsome book! The ending kinda sucked though, she left it open for another book but there probably won't be one!!!
so I wasn't going to review this book tonight but I might as well just get it done
first of all I just found out that she's a sophomore she's totally an utterly in love with her vampireish boyfriend and she is a sophomore she acts like she's so much older and she acts like she's got that she really isn't honestly she really frustrates me she acts like she's dumb half of the time and then Becky continuously ignores what she's trying to say and I don't know this is like a 2.5 rounded up
I wouldn't necessarily say these books are bad it's definitely really good for beginner readers and stuff like that it's just I don't know they kind of a frustrated me but they're very easy read and sometimes it's like oh I want to know what happens next because you want to see if it's going to be as hilarious as before because of how cringy it can be it's just kinda like one of those books
This book was okay, it wasn't anything to write home about. Nothing big really happened. And the on-going feud between Trevor and Raven is getting old, I mean she loves Alexander and it's clear Trevor has had a big ol' crush on her for a while... Other than that Raven is starting to annoy me, at first her antics and immaturity were refreshing, but now it's like okay... 16 year olds do NOT act like this. I mean most of them are out having sex and doing drugs and raising all kinds of hell, not pining over the fact that they don't know whether they want to be a vampire or not... Then again, 16 year olds in the real world don't have the option to be a vampire... At any rate, I mean she's 16 and Becky and Raven have hinted at sex twice in 4 books, it's like they aren't even thinking about it, which it crazy because what teenager isn't thinking about it, especially if they have a serious on-going relationship with someone.
Another complaint I have is wtf is up with Alexander's eyes? In the first book they were midnight blue, now when it came to the third book it was said that they were chocolate a couple of times and charcoal once and now in the fourth book they are either blue or brown? I mean does the author not remember what colour they are? Do they change colour? And if they do change colour why weren't readers told about it?
Also, wth is up with the days of the week, there was one part in the book where Raven and Alexander were going out and Henry and Billy were at home doing homework. It was a Friday night, yet the NEXT day Raven had school with Becky... I mean, if it wasn't the next day, there was no indication that the weekend had even passed... It was pretty much they went out to the cave, crap happened, they came home and Raven didn't sleep well and the next day she was tired at school. I mean I don't know much about the school system in what I assume is the U.S. but I'm pretty sure kids don't go to school on Saturdays.
Other then these annoyances I found myself only reading the book because I needed to go to sleep at night and had nothing else better to do. If the fifth book isn't any better, I'm going to be disappointed.
If you haven’t seen my other reviews for the books in this series I am just going to say it again, I love this series!
It isn’t always paradise dating a vampire and this is where problems start to arise for this cute goth couple. I don’t even know what number I am on for rereading but it still hurts to see the problems that are tearing them apart. *sigh*
We do get to see Raven be more of a sister towards her brother which is a nice mix into the vampire madness. We can’t really blame her from wanting to protect him from the undead though! I know I’d do the same, ha.
Trevor, the typical jock, is still around and even though he doesn’t have much to do with this plot he is still trying to ruin Raven one dance at a time. I do have a soft spot for him because I just love the banter between them. Alexander will still always be my number and who I root for though.
Overall, it was as good as the first time and I’m still excited to continue my reread through the series.
Y’all I made the mistake of getting invested 😔 They did my boy Valentine dirty. He deserved more screen time, idgaf about Luna, Jagger or Raven’s prom.
I don't want to start any arguments, as everyone have their own opinion, I just wanted to say this was the best book in the series so far. If you don't include bitchy valentine, that is.
To be fair, I suggest to read the first three books before reading this review for spoiler-free experience.
Jagger and Luna left Dullsville and all is good, until their little brother, Valentine Maxwell, shows up with an unknown goal. While Raven and Alexander have ups and downs because of the little Nosferatu, the prom is coming up. And that's the reason why this book is called 'Dance with a Vampire'. You're welcome.
Plot: The plot of this novel was more polished and entertaining than the last three books. Even though I feel the next books will be more action filled, I enjoyed even the little chapters with no actual meaning (yes, I liked the manicure chapter too. Revenge is best served... with black nailpolish!)
Writing: The writing was light and humorous like in the previous books, but some dialogues you don't realize sometimes who is talking until you complete the entire conversation.
Romance: Alright, finally, Raven and Alexander have actual problems in their goddamn relationship. They are finally showing signs of not-so-eternal love- Raven has a conflict of joining the dark underworld, while Alexander is craving for her blood and flesh. Finally! I though it would be lovey-dovey one hundred percent until the end!
Black Lipstick- Raven: Raven was just a plot device and a comic relief in this novel. Pretty pathetic if you ask me. She also whines about another girl buying the dress she wanted to prom and everyone are like 'we'll do anything for our little Raven'. I'm happy that the rest of the plot made me forget it. And seriously, who sleeps with hungry vampires in a coffin?!
Not so Gentleman- Alexander: Alexander was, once again as in the first book, swoon worthy. He actually was craving for blood all along! Now you're a true vampire, Alexander! But I do have to note that he still all hurt and shit because of the little stuff.
The Missing and Missed- Jagger and Luna: I miss those two funky vampires! I really do hope they will come later in the series, or else.
The not Amazing One- Valentine: Valentine wasn't a strong point in this book. Let just say he was swallow, even for a vampire. But I do love his cool-- oops, I almost said a spoiler! Almost killed by fans...
Overall: The plot was honestly way better than previous books. I hope to read Coffin Club next month, even though it's right on the shelf.
4.5 STARS
Liked: -Alexander -Plot -Prom
Disliked: -Where are the Maxwell's?! -Raven -Valentine
I ask myself, what audience is this book being aimed at. I'm still test reading the series for the librarians at school who were keen to hear what they were like, and I feel so horrible having to say that I don't really like them at all. They're OK, that's the truth, but they are not brilliant. The premise of each book is simple - Human girl who wants to be a vampire meets a vampire boy and they fall in love. They are hunted by evil vampires who wish to make the girl one of them despite her loves wishes and chaos ensues. That's there is the plot essentially of nearly all of the books, each with a slightly different setting and the introduction and subtraction of characters. Not too much changes plot wise and after four books which is kind of sad really, I just wish she got changed in the second book and the story could have actually gone somewhere. However I find myself simply confused, is this book aimed at a young adult audience, or a younger "tween" audience. I just can't tell, and I hope for the sake of this book that it's a "tween" audience, it just doesn't work at YA literature for me.
The only remotely good thing about this series besides rather attractive male vampires is the relationship between Raven and her family. They love and accept her for who she is, even if Billy does make fun of her sometimes, it's in a fun cute way. Her relationship with Billy is one of the few things that changes in this book, it becomes stronger and her need to protect him from the vampire child he has become friends with increases, and in some ways her finally caring about someone other than herself or her "perfect" boyfriend is a good thing. I'm starting to think this is definitely a book for a younger audience... Just not sure yet. I'll let you know.
I really love this series.... everyone who likes mythical books and stories needs to read this series.. So in this book jagger and lunas younget brother comes to dullsville and becomes friends with billy who is ravens younger brother and them they start a project about vampires and at the same time raven and alexander are serching the town trying to find where valentine;s coffin is and also the prom is at this time so raven and alexander go to hthe prom and then trevor riggs the prom king and queen so that he wins king and raven wins queen and then alexander leaves and then raven follows and then henry is in the parking lot and tells them that billy who was grounded snuck out of his house and went to the cemetry with valentine to visit some graves and do reserch for the vampure priject and then stuff happens and then valentine has some magical capabilities to read blood or something and hten he says some stuff that makes raven and alexander think about their relationshipo and stuff and then stuff happens and then valentine collapses and hees really weak so alexader takes him to his house and gives him blood and then he heals but at the same time raven found out that jagger and luna are in hipsterville at the coffin club so then the book ends where alexander leaves and takes valentine to hipsterville where jagger and luna are and raven is sad... I hate the fact that the books for this series are really short, this book was like 170 pages long, i wish it was longer...
Another book done in this painful series. Every book so far we've had a different vampire and the same plot.
This time, we have Valentine who is Jagger and Luna's little brother. He tried to get close to Billy and we all know what happens there.
I cannot stand some of these characters. Becky really bothered me in this book. Her and Matt have been together basically since the end of the first book, and I feel like we have seen her become more and more reliant. She seems to always be in a panic to see him in the mornings and every freaking second of the day. The whole bit with not wanting to keep a secret was ridiculous. You're like 17, it's normal to have secrets or not give yourself completely to some boy you've been dating for a few months. Characters like her encourage young women to be reliant and men, I'm not for it.
I think Raven really let's us down in this book. Thank God she's not as annoying as she has been in the other books but I feel like she's being a little bit of a hypocrite with the whole vampire situation. I just want her to shut up and become one already.
"Dace with a Vampire" and the "Vampire Kisses" series is like another "Twlight". Human and vampire fall in love, but in this book they don't have any drama with the two lovebirds. Raven would be Bella in "Twilight", but instead of being the victim sghe is the heroine. Also she the total oppiste of Bella. Raven is Goth and her favorite color is black. Her ultimate wish is to be a vampire, which sshe wanted since she was born, and before she met her vampire boyfriend. Alexander would be Edward, but he doen't overprotect Raven, He cares for her, and doesn't want her to be hurt, but if there is a mission he alwasy takes her with him. In this book Raven has to protect her little brother from a vampire, named Valentine. This book is romantic. I think every girl would love to go to prom with the perfect dress and her true love. This book is perfect for all the "Twilight" fans, and people who love love stories and advenyure!
This Is my fouth book of Vampire Kisses and I would say I am not disappointed!! The series gets better and better!! I like all the characters..There was more Billy and Henry in this book and I got to know more about them, knowing what they feel even though it was not said directly There are few secrets too. new talent.
I like the pace of the book . Each chapter is entertaining ... I liked Trevor moments too and Raven is the awesome gothic girl I have ever read about.... VAlentine didn't appear till half of the book but I liked how he much he revealed..special power.. I did understand him for why he did...The feeling of belonging..with the othr two elder sibilings.. There manny things which could be learnt from this series..Raven I can relate myself to her!She is getting much more matured ! He relationhip with becky stiill goes on stron even though they are now busy with their bfs! I am surely gonna read the next one!
Dance with a Vampire was a fantastic installment to the Vampire Kisses series. Alexander and Raven might have gotten rid of Luna and Jagger, but a new vampire is in town, Valentine. As far as villain characters go, Valentine is pretty tame. He reads thoughts and spreads secrets to stir up trouble in Raven and Alexander's relationship. My favorite character is Raven. I like her style and attitude. She dresses and acts how she wants to and doesn't care what anyone else thinks. Alexander has become my new book boyfriend. His goth style, being a vampire, and caring attitude make him very swoon worthy. The plot flows elegantly, thanks to the author's talented writing style. I couldn't put the book down. The ending made me a little agitated. I can't wait to pick up the next book in the series and find out what happens next.
DANCE WITH A VAMPIRE continues the tale of Raven, the outcast, and her hottie boyfriend, Alexander.
They have just defeated the two sibling vampires threatening both their town and their relationship. They're now ready to relax together when Valentine arrives.
Valentine befriends Raven's younger brother, Billy, and suddenly she's very protective of her little brother.
Valentine has the ability to read the innermost thoughts of someone's mind once he touches them. He knows that Raven's not ready to become a vampire.
Ellen Schreiber writes another great tale in this saga -- so well that readers will want to sink their teeth into the VAMPIRE KISSES series.
The story really picked up in this book 4 of the Vampire Kisses series. I am so addicted to the characters to everything that this series revolves around, I can not stop reading. I loved the Prom segment in this book, the dress Raven picks out, the diversion created in order to keep Vampire Alexander from having his pic taken. The author really gives such a unique spin to vampires, teen vamps, I just cant get enough. I love the sense of humor as well throughout all of the books so far. I am so in love with Alexander and I bite my nails every time I think he is going to have to leave the mortal Raven behind. I wonder when and if Raven will ever join Alexander in his dark world. Bravo to book 4!
Okay - in all honesty - I've given up on this book and the remainder of the series. Raven's constant whining about wanting to be a vamp has grown rather dull. And the fact that she continues to put herself in situations where her vamp boyfriend has specifically asked her not to (he's done this with a great deal of restraint as far as vamps are concerned and been very polite about it too)has just pushed me off the rest of the story/series. I think I made it to page 20 or so before tossing the book in the heap pile.
This one was much better than the second and third books! Jagger and Luna have returned to Romania, or did they? You’ll find out once you read this book! Their younger brother is stirring up trouble in Dullsville. Raven now has to protect her brother, Billy. Just when Alexander and Raven thought they had a break Valentine enters into their lives. What adventures will Raven and Alexander have to go on just to protect her brother? Will Alexander and Raven’s relationship last. Once again, you’re just going to have to read this book. I highly recommend it!
This is the 4th book in the Vampire Kisses series and it continues the adventure with Raven, her vampire boyfriend Alexander and friends. In this book, there is another pale stranger running around town and he is much younger and has now befriended Raven's little brother. Lots of mystery, twists and turns, and even a Prom. I don't want to go into the story more as not to spoil it but I do recommend this book and series to all vampire lovers.
This is the fourth book in the Vampire Kisses series. So far, it's as good as the rest. Alexander and Raven are trying to keep Raen's little brother Billy away from another vampire in the neighborhood named Valentine because they're not sure why Valentine is there. I think they'll find out why Valentine is there, then make Valentine leave.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Reread 07/2023 review- 2.5~2.75 stars?? Oh my god, Raven is so freaking clingy. And she had actually been a little bit less annoying and better about that this book, but then at the end she reverted back to "my vampire mate." "I can't stand to be without you for even a second, please take me with you" 😒🙄
Dance with a vampire is a drop dead sexy read I was hooked from page one! Alexander & Raven are to die for I love this scary sweet couple!!! there was not one thing I wanted to change in this book.. The ending will make U thirst for more! Ellen Schreiber is AWESOME!
This book like the previous three was trash. I continue to read it because of the humor I find in how terrible this story is. As I’ve said before Jameson is the only good character.
