Love and Salvage #2

Eli's Three Wishes

Rate this book
Eli Gaither was a big, rough, mean sumabitch of a man. Solitary by choice, he only attended Gaither family events when he was made to. Still hurting from a painful divorce, he was like an angry bear licking his wounds. Most people, save for his family, avoided him until Oscar Hernandez came into his life, yelling at him and turning his world upside down.
Okay, maybe he was plain loco for hitting on the grizzly bear of a man in front of him but he couldn’t help it. The man was so freaking hot. But Oscar was not about to let this man tell him what to do and how to think. If Eli Gaither thought him a shrinking violet, he had another thing coming. Oscar was used to getting his way, so Eli was in for the ride of his life with the hot blooded Latin man.

Eli's Three Wishes is the second book in the Love and Salvage series. It is the story of Elijah Gaither and his quest for love just when he thinks he has the rest of his life together. Just as he meets a cute, younger designer, his youngest son comes to live with him. After being caught with another boy at school, his son leaves his ex-wife's house and lands at Eli's house..

Although the story is classified as "Erotica" (and #20 on Amazon as of the time of this writing), I didn't realize it. There's more sex than I normally like to read, but plenty of other plot points going on to make it enjoyable. It's an easy read with easy to relate to characters. I loved the tension between the older man and younger man, and Eli's own tension he thought he would have with his extended redneck family.

The one thing that was a bit weird for me as a reader was the fact that the epilogue launched into new characters and new situations not relevant to Eli or Oscar. In my opinion, it seemed that should be the first chapter in the next novel.

The first novel in the series, Loving Emmett, was about Eli's nephew and the third novel, Halestorm, is about another of Eli's nephews. I read this first, but am excited to read the other two in the series as well.

The author provided me a copy for an honest review.

Different, very 'blokey' narration.

Fast pace, low on plot, with not everything explained.
Found it a little repetitive in places and the father/son relationship sometimes heartening, sometimes a little odd.

For all the claims of love the joinings were more sex than romantic and hot dirty couplings at that.

Which might sound negative but I like it.

Any roughness to the writing suited the first person narrative. This is a man writing men, hot equals horny not dreamy glances. I liked the big sappy bear and his firey Latino lover.

It's not perfect and wont suit everyone, but it's a fun sexy romp with great voice; I found it an enjoyable, undemanding read.

Review by The Blogger Girls.

I will start with the many things I really enjoyed about this story, beginning with the characters. Eli (Elijah) Gaither is a big, sexy bear, divorced father of three older children, the youngest a sophomore in high school. He runs a salvage company with his brothers where they recover and refurbish fixtures and materials from old homes. I absolutely loved Eli. He is just settling in living his life comfortably as an older gay man, though he had a pretty rocky road getting to this point. His two older kids are out on their own, but his youngest comes to live with him after a final blow-up with his mom, Eli’s ex. It was a nice aspect to this story watching these two reconnect and figure out their new life together.

Oscar Hernandez is a hot Latino who crosses Eli’s path at the salvage shop while purchasing some items for his own job at a company that does designing and renovating. They are immediately attracted but take things rather slow, as they live about an hour apart from each other. They have some great chemistry but must tackle some issues, such as their age difference (Oscar is only a few years younger than Eli’s oldest), Eli’s youngest now living with him, etc. But their feelings win out, and they both realize they are in love.

This is the second book in a spinoff from the Renovation series, but I read it as a stand alone story. I don’t think the others need to be read first, but I probably would have had a better feel for the characters and setting going into this one. There were a few times where I felt there was a lot of information being given that I didn’t care too much about, but this may have had something to do with not having any of the background from the previous stories.

I only had a few other issues with this story. I often overlook a lot of editing issues, but it is worth a mention that they do exist throughout this story. The only other thing was more of a confusion on my part, and it is mostly with the epilogue which I assume is setting up the next story. I had hoped to see more about how things were going with Eli and Oscar, but that wasn’t the case with this one. It is about one of the other guys, which definitely got me interested in the next story. However, it introduces a sort of paranormal twist that I really didn’t see coming and just didn’t seem to fit the story. There was a previous incident that could be connected to this, but again, it felt thrown in out of the blue. It did pique my interest though, because I often enjoy paranormal stories. Knowing going into it that is the direction the series is taking, I definitely look forward to reading the next installment. But, for me, it felt a little off attached to this story.

This was my first Matthew Ortiz book, and it definitely won’t be my last. I liked the writing style and really enjoyed the characters. There was a perfect amount of dialog, snark and sexiness, and I hope to see more of that in Mr. Ortiz’ other stories.

Eli Gaither runs the family business of salvaging valuable materials from old houses, polishing them up and selling them for a profit. He is a divorced man in his 40’s with three basically grown children and a witch for an ex-wife. He is also gay, well I think he labels himself as bi. His youngest son is in high school and recently just shown up at his door. He was caught with another boy having sex and his mother threw him out. He had nowhere to go but his dad’s, whom he has only spoken to a few times since the divorce, which was the boy’s choice.
Just as Eli is trying to deal with his quiet life now being tossed around by the addition of his son, he gets a call saying that Oscar is coming to see him. Oscar is a young gay man who is comfortable with his sexuality and is an interior designer. They met one day when Oscar went to Eli’s store to purchase some items for the company. Being warned that Eli doesn’t like weak shy people, Oscar went in with flair. This led to a night of sex at a hotel, where Eli left early morning and did something he will regret forever.
This story takes us on their journey, overcoming the age difference, the miles between their prospective homes, and the overriding need for passion that they have for each other. Eli is going to have to deal with not having the quiet life of a hermit any more, he is going to have to face the love for Oscar, the roles of being an active father to a son who hated him for the divorce and the ex-wife who would rather save her reputation with the church than deal with the issues at hand. We learn his secrets from his past life and realize looks aren’t everything.
Oscar is dealing with his boss who he adores being ill, we never find out what is the disease but we know it takes a toll on Oscar. Also how is he going to convince Eli age is only a number and help him overcome his fears?
While I found this book to have some editing problems, I didn’t feel it was worthy of taking a star away in the ratings. I just found so many questions unanswered and directions that were not explained that I had a hard time really investing in the story. The character development was good to a point, but I never felt I was able to really understand their emotions and story. The discussion of their sex scenes was hot, but I also felt they were raw and lacked real intimacy. It felt more like two animals going at each other than showing us the love we were lead to believe. I would recommend this book if you were into a quick read with no real investment, then you have a hit. If you wanted something that would melt your heart and stay with you for a while, I am not sure you will find it here.

4 Heart Review by Dan

We met Uncle Eli in book one of this series. He is a 43 year old, ex-marine, big old burly bear of a man with a shaved head and a beard. Eli was married when he was in the Marines and they had three children. His wife though was a piece of work, having sex with every guy on base while he was deployed. Luckily he ditched her years ago, and finally admitted he is a bisexual. But he is a grumpy bastard, working his job at the Gaither family salvage business and then going home to his empty house.

Then one day a “muy caliente” Latin man named Oscar Hernandez comes waltzing into the store to verify an order his boss in Atlanta placed for items on the Gaither website. Sparks fly, there is a lot of shouting, a lot of aggressiveness, and one hot kiss. Both men are left smouldering, and the next time they meet, there is bound to be some fire!

Along the way through this story, not only do we catch up with some of the characters from this series, but also from Matt’s other books as well. In addition we have a hot Latin love affair, a son coming out of the closet, the same son being caught with his pants down, and some typical southern redneck family issues!

I really enjoyed the story on this one. Mid 40’s guy falls for late 20’s guy. Despite the age difference, they make a good couple. Now can they convince the rest of the world that it is ok? Particularly since Eli’s oldest child is only 3 years younger than Oscar?

I recommend this book, and the series. You can jump on anywhere since the books are standalone, but I’d still recommend reading them in order since they do sometimes refer to characters you won’t know if you read them in a different order! Some of the earlier copies of this book had a lot of editing issues, make sure you get the latest version as the author says they’ve been re-edited and you’ll be fine!

Eli Gaither is a good ole Georgia boy in the best sense of the description. He works hard, plays hard, and loves even harder. But Ortiz is quick to remind readers that even good ole boys who look like they have life by the tail need true love, and sometimes it's harder for them to find it than it is for us lesser mortals.

Big, brawny, and bald Eli works at the Gaither family salvage company and despite a huge family and friends has been a loner since his divorce. His younger son, with whom he bonded more than his other two children, refuses to speak to him, and lately the family pretty much avoids him because Eli's been acting like a bear with a thorn in his paw.

The only one who doesn't seem even the least bit intimidated by grouchy Eli is Oscar Hernandez, a tall, thin Hispanic man who isn't afraid of yelling at and teasing Eli. At first annoyed by the interior designer, Eli mentally bats him away, trying to walk away from Oscar's taunting, until Oscar suddenly kisses him.

However, Eli only wants three things in the world: For his son to talk to him, for someone to love who loves him back, and to become a family man again. He's embraced the fact that he's gay and that getting married in the first place because it was expected of him was a stupid idea. Now he wants the love and happiness that so many of his extended family have, not just another roll in the hay.

Fortunately, Oscar is just the right guy to take on Eli. Coming from a loud and lively Hispanic family, Oscar immediately understands the Gaithers and reads Eli as just the man he wants and needs to complete him. And Oscar is just the bandy rooster to get what he wants.

When Eli's son appears, having been kicked out of the house by his mother after he announced that he was gay, Eli greets him with open arms, only to realize that taking care of the boy, who is hurt and confused, will probably end his burgeoning relationship with Oscar. But how can Eli walk away from the son he loves so much or from the man who is stealing his heart?

The thing that made this story most appealing to me was the character of Eli and also his son Robbie. The story was a nice combination of Eli's romance with Oscar with some super hot sex but also had some nice family elements particularly when he has to start looking after son. Robbie ends up on Eli's doorstep after he comes out as being gay and runs away from his mother's home.

My favorite line in the book was the following Oscar's 'sleepover' at Eli's house when Oscar wanders out into the kitchen the following morning.
A young blonde man tilted his head smirked at me. Taking a sip of his coffee the guy crossed his pajama clad legs. Looking over the lip of his coffee cup you asked mildly open, so… "Are you going to be my new Mommy?"
Well Fuck!

The story has some peaks at the Gaither family including Emmett and Alex which I liked. I always enjoy a series that continues the journey of the original couple.

Now for the part that really had me stumped. What was it with the epilogue? Absolutely came from left field and unless I missed something through the story (which I may well have done) totally threw me as I was unprepared and really surprised. I am now definitely intrigued to know what the next story is going to bring due to this big twist at the end!

I was going to rate this book 3 but have pulled it up to 3.5 due to the intriguing twist!

Eli is sleepwalking through his life. He works and goes home, he has little communication with his children, and he is not particularly happy. The Gaither clan cannot allow Eli to hide for too long and as soon as they know about Oscar, they meddle in every way possible to push these two men together. Not that they need much help. There are a few roadblocks and some real life issues that have to be resolved, but in the end they knew they were going to end up together.

One of many reasons to love this book:

“I read one of Emily's gay romance novels one time on a drive back with her from a job. Pretty steamy stuff. But we didn't have a climatic event that brings us closer together, making us defy the odd, finding our love is true.”

Oscar snickered, lolling his head on the back of the chair “Phfft! As if. Life's not like a romance novel. It's way messier and kinda ordinary.”

Some of my favorite lines from Eli’s Three Wishes, trust me there were more:

“Stop flirting with him, you burger fag.”

“Men are like shoes, Dad. Some are too tight, some too loose, some just don’t fit, others look good on the shelf, they are ugly when you try them on. You have to try on a few pairs until you get the right fit that looks good on you.”

Need I say more? I loved this book because one minute I was laughing out loud, and the next I was fanning myself! Yes, it was ridiculously funny and hot. What more can you want in a book?

This was a terrific story about Eli and Oscar. Eli is a big bear of a man who is quite a bit older than Oscar. The relationship between them was fun, furious, fast moving and hot. It was a story about how Eli's three wishes came true. The epilogue is what I found so surprising and enchanting. I mean what was that?? I think maybe I should be looking for a book two.... I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I recommend it!

Three wishes

With every new book Mathew is getting better and better. Eli and Oscar only shows that opposites attract. The love they have found in each other shows age ain't nothing but a number.
