Nadia Lake and Nate Hayes find themselves at the center of a horrifying conspiracy in this conclusion to the series that began with Replica.
At the conclusion of Resistance, Nadia Lake and the Replica of her best friend, Nate Hayes, found themselves at the center of a horrifying conspiracy. Framed for murder and wanted by the government, they have no choice but to go underground and seek refuge in the dangerous, gang-ridden slums of the Basement.
Jenna Black brings readers an action-packed final installment that will have them racing to the finish.
Jenna Black is your typical writer. Which means she's an "experience junkie." She got her BA in physical anthropology and French from Duke University.
Once upon a time, she dreamed she would be the next Jane Goodall, camping in the bush making fabulous discoveries about primate behavior. Then, during her senior year at Duke, she did some actual research in the field and made this shocking discovery: primates spend something like 80% of their time doing such exciting things as sleeping and eating.
Concluding that this discovery was her life's work in the field of primatology, she then moved on to such varied pastimes as grooming dogs and writing technical documentation. She writes paranormal romance for Tor and urban fantasy for Bantam Dell.
Saying goodbye to dear characters is never easy, but when they’ve been through hell and back in the time you’ve spent with them, it’s even harder to let them go. My time with Nadia, Nate, Bishop, Agnes and Dante was exciting and wonderful, and I'll gladly join them again if Jenna Black ever decides to revisit them.
Revolution is even darker than the previous two books, as our three young Executives and their two companions are forced to hide, first in the Basement, and then in Debasement, a dreadful place ruled by the most vicious gang lord. Nadia and Nate have enemies coming at them from all sides. Thea and her replica puppet Dorothy are ruling Paxco with an iron fist, aiming all their efforts towards killing Nate and his friends and making an example out of them. The Resistance is no better, and Maiden’s gang is simply terrifying. A bunch of kids, no matter how smart, stand very little chance against all of them, but Nate and Nadia have been known to beat those odds before.
Nevertheless, things looked incredibly bleak for a while, with no visible way out for the mini resistance. Their entire arsenal against no less than three powerful enemies consisted of a hope, a prayer, and some clever maneuvering. The savage world of Debasement was perhaps the hardest to handle for Executives, but they had Bishop to lead them through. In the end, worlds collided everywhere they turned, and they had to truly open their eyes and see everything that was wrong with Paxco.
Jenna Black is a seasoned writer, which is evident from her every sentence. Her sense of pacing is superb and her writing clean and tightly controlled. Above all, Revolution stands out with its characterization. It didn’t take the direction I was expecting, but the characters grew and learned the entire time.
I believe the point that Jenna Black tried to make with this trilogy is that winning the war is usually only the beginning. When the war is won, true battles are only just starting. Power doesn’t come without sacrifices, and the willingness to make those sacrifices for the greater good is the mark of a true leader. Therefore, a truly happy, fulfilling ending was all but impossible for some, but their sacrifice wasn’t at all in vain.
Jenna Black’s Replica trilogy may be somewhat underappreciated, but I highly recommend it to fans of dystopian fiction, delightful action and strong romances. Honestly, what’s not to like?
I was so excited to get to the final book in the Replica Trilogy. I thought it was a great wrap up to the series. Revolution picks up right where Resistance ends with the group hiding from the government.
Nathan is the son of the chairman or government leader. He was murdered and brought back to life in book one. He is a cloned body with most of his memories in tact. He has never been a very good heir to his father. He shows no interest in doing anything government related Nadia is his betrothed. Her family has always been high up in government as well. While Nadia and Nathan were never romantically attracted to each other, they have been best friends.
Bishop is a former male prostitute from the Basement who helps hide the two fugitives. He is considered the low of the low in the class level of society. He is also Nathan’s lover. Dante is an “employee”. He is a servant to the “executive” class, but is working to topple the current power structure. Agnes is the daughter of a chairman of a different state. She was brought in as possible marriage replacement for Nate. She has been groomed to run, but is described as very common to look at and very shy and awkward around others. They are quite the misfit group of kids set to save Paxco.
The story does start off a bit slow in that Nadia, Nate and the gang are hiding out in the Basement. The government is accusing Nate and Nadia of murder. Since they can’t leave the apartment, there isn’t much action going on. They are able get stories about what is happening in the Basement and news reports of what lies the government is spreading. There is also character growth during this time.
There comes a time in the story where things between the Basement and the government hit a critical mass. There are riots and things look like they couldn’t get any worse for our main characters. Dorothy, the current government ruler, takes things further than the kids could ever imagine. The amount of violence that Dorothy rains down on people in her own territory is larger than anyone could’ve expected. There are several people who are killed or critically injured.
There is a new character in Shrimp. He is the younger brother of the gang leader in the Basement who helps to hide the misfit group of fugitives. While his brother is pretty cutthroat, Shrimp is a smart guy, but he is very loyal to his brother. He sees that his brother isn’t making the best decision, but has a hard time going against family. He also takes a great liking to Agnes. It was great to see her finally getting some attention.
I felt that this story wrapped up very well. It isn’t all hearts and rainbows and there are sacrifices made by some characters. But I thought it wrapped the story up the best way possible. I thought this was a great fast pace series. I’m not a big reader of YA, but I felt that this series was a great read. I thought that the overall story across three books was very interesting. The characters are well developed and make you really care about them and where they go.
I received this ARC by bidding on the author's basket in the Brenda Novak Auction earlier this year, I was in no way compensated for this review.
Jenna Black's Revolution wraps up the Replica trilogy and I am still decompressing what just happened! It was so intense and omg, the feels I had at the end are still haunting me! I was not expecting this kind of ending from the series and I must say, bravo Jenna!
We pick up pretty much where we left off in Resistance, Dorothy and Thea have killed Nate's dad and made it look like Nate and Nadia did it. Basically turning all the Executives and everyone they know against them and causing them to go on the run with their friends, Kurt, Dante, and Anges. They end up taking refuge in the Basement with unlikely fellows, the Red Death, a pretty intense gang that is the most in charge of the Basement.
The next few days in hiding are an intense sort. Not keen to wait things out Dorothy is causing chaos for the Basement, cutting them off from electricity, food supplies, medical care, and basically everything. And then the real battle begins when she sends aerial attacks from above. Nadia and Nate and their friends and the newly acquainted Shrimp--more on him in a bit--work together to try to put an end to Dorothy, and through her, Thea's reign.
This was an intense read! There really isn't a better word to describe it better! It was intense! We are in full out battle mode here and the stakes are high. People are getting critically injured and dying. The Basement was never the best of places to begin with but Dorothy is making it ten times worse. Pretty much all lives are in jeopardy including our heroes.
I have come to really love all these characters! Nate and Nadia definitely have their positives from the get-go! Nate could be a bit of an ass at times, but he has a truly devoted heart to his friends. Nadia may have cared too much of her appearance to Society at first, but that changes pretty much in the first book and only continues to grow!
Dante, how I loved Dante! He was a fierce fight to the end and has a caring heart as well! The way he felt for Nadia pretty much melted me into nonsense goo! Kurt while he may seem like a bigger ass than Nate, kind of grows on you too. Then there's Agnes who I absolutely loved! She was definitely a character to take some growing towards, but I loved her! Sure, she was a bit socially awkward and shy at times (a few of my own qualities!) but there were times when she opened her mouth and said some surprising things! The girl's got guts and I loved her for it! She truly shows her colors in this final installment and she was a real hero in the end!
Then there's Shrimp, and I totally fell for him too. He was a member of the Red Death--brother to the leader actually--and had taken to being the group's "caretaker" while in the Basement. He helped them with the know-how of things and he was really a nice guy with a good heart despite being a criminal of sorts! Plus his crush on Agnes really sealed the deal for me, I love seeing that "big bad boy" type melt for the right girl!
Wow, a lot of talk on characters there, but they are key to the story and the enjoyment I think! I really felt like this was an amazing novel! Lots of good action and suspense, because there are times when we don't know if all our characters will make it! Too many close calls to count! And just when we think things might be over, we are wrong! There are still quite a few chapters of aftermath to get the characters on their end course and this is where I fall apart!
When a series ends, I don't like having too many unanswered questions. I can handle not knowing precisely what's in the future. Just knowing the characters are on their course to a HEA ending is enough, but sometimes, it's not. We pretty much know where Nadia and Nate are at the end point. Although I still have questions regarding Nadia, but we only get an inkling of where Agnes will be. I mean, in a sense, we know, but we don't really know, you know? (yeah, had to throw that last bit in there!)
I just didn't feel like all our heroes were on the path to their HEA ending, there wasn't enough clues for me to see that and that upset me. I mean I was near tears with this one with the not knowing! I wanted to know that everyone was on their path to their happiness but I really only got that from a few people. There's a total blank, unknown for a few of the others and it made me want to cry because of it.
But still, the hopeless romantic in me, that likes to come out when I'm reading, wants to say that further down the line, everyone will be living HEA and that's what I am going to stick with!
Revolution was a great ending to a very intense and fast paced trilogy! I have enjoyed it immensely despite the lack of paranormal features, but a good dose of sci-fi will do in a pinch any day of the week! If you're looking for that amazingly, awesome sci-fi YA novel, look no further than the Replica trilogy! Jenna Black is truly talented and I urge you all to read her books!
A more-than satisfying conclusion to this thrilling trilogy -- Revolution was an exhilarating read filled with fully-fledged characters, action-packed scenes, and so many twists and turns that kept me flipping the pages.
Replica started out so well. An intriguing plot. A betrothed couple who are friends with secrets. A young woman wanting to be more. A young man wanting to be out of the closet. A seedy underworld under a veneer of capitalism. A definite dystopian world I could believe in with an AI villain that was totally believable.
Resistance continued with a storyline that was less entrancing - too much romance, not enough story. I loved seeing our character's flaws get them into trouble - impetuousness on Nadia's part, Nate's innate desire to be snarky and rude to others. But, in so much else, it was unreasonable. The death of Nate's mom, the attempt on Nadia's life. Nadia's weird trust in people she doesn't know. And her ability to escape from a well guarded compound. Resistance was so odd that it felt like forever for me to get up the desire to read Revolution.
I wish I'd stopped with Replica. Revolution picks up where Resistance left off. Nate's father is dead at the hands of Dorothy and our heroes are on the run. They find themselves unwitting allies and we have yet another paired off romance with insta-love. I'm so over that in stories for teens. That's not how relationships are built, people. No spoilers here but it ends almost exactly how you would have expected it to. No surprises here.
In the final book Nadia and friends are trapped in The Basement and need to find a way to get their message out.
What I enjoyed: * Good to have a conclusion * Nice to see Agnes get some character growth * The world was interesting and a bit too scarily accurate as to what could be the future, where corporations own the territories, not governments.
What could have been better: * More of an ending * The beginning was a bit slow. I think they spent too much time in The Basement * It had been a few years since I read the last one and I was very confused thinking Bishop and Kurt were different people, it should have been made more obvious.
I actually found this to be the best book in the series. And, not to sell it out, the whole collection would make a fantastic 3-season Netflix series. I finally liked all the players and cared about what happened to them. And I love me a powerful female character. Agnes and Nadia do it for me. I also love bows at the end books: tie it up all pretty . But, this is a necessarily messy bow. I'm so glad she decided not to make it perfect.
I enjoyed the pacing and action of this book much more compared to the first two. However, the ending felt a bit lacking (not sure that's meant for another book or something).
I found it a little slow moving and boring for the first half when they are in hiding in gang territory. It was ok to have them go there but then they sat around feeling helpless and not doing anything for about 100 pages. And in all that time Agnes was the only character who really did anything or had any smart thoughts. And while I really liked Agnes, my favorite character in the previous books was Nadia and how she changed and grew and was the smart one. I felt like that was missing for the first half of the book. But Nadia more than makes up for it in the latter half and it was great to have Nadia back to her awesome self and I was totally thinking that she would
On the run from Dorothy and Paxco's security forces after being accused of murdering Chairman Hayes, Naadie, Nate and their small group of friends have gone into hiding in the Basement, forced to trust their survival to a notoriously brutal gang leader. But they can't hide forever, and with conditions in the basement worsening day by day and violence erupting at every corner, they stake their lives on a desperate gamble to get the truth about Dorothy and Thea out and take them down, whatever the cost. The pulse-pounding finale of the Replica trilogy was everything I could have hoped for, with an intense plot filled with thrilling action and suspense interspersed with romantic moments and a bittersweet yet somehow perfect ending. Why aren't more people reading these books? This trilogy has been among my favourite dystopia series from book one, and the great conclusion only confirms its place.

I gave 2 stars, the author had 3 books to figure out her plot and a reasonable ending, and failed miserably. There is no ending, its like the book stopped when something finally started happening. I dont need happy endings, but there needs to be some closure to the plot, and the characters. I also find it massively hard to believe that basement dwellers, who live in complete squallor, decided not to explore a subway tunnel that goes into employer zone because of the smell of bat guano. Seriously? There are 100 pages describing how disgusting and rank the Basement is, yet not a single person will take some lights down a tunnel that could lead to countless free resources because of an unidentified smell?? Stupid. And since that ^ is about 90% of the book, I mean.... Its probably really worthy of a one star.
I really liked this. Even though not a lot actually happened for much of the book, the characters were just compelling enough that reading them simply existing was pretty awesome.
I want to know more about the future. Like, did Nadia ever get a happy ending? WE DON'T KNOW!
Again, the cover does not reflect the story at all. MOST GENERIC SCI-FI COVER EVER.
Definitely the conclusion this series really needed. Nate's eyes are opened after seeing "his sister" Dorothy convince the world he's a criminal. He's accused of murder, kidnapping and inciting a revolution. As battles wage in the Basement, Nate and Nadia have to decide whether to stay in hiding or take the only chance they have to stop Dorothy and save millions of lives.
I usually dislike open endings and this was the same. The whole book was sort of frustrating and nothing was really resolved at the end. I wanted to strangle the characters sometimes because I felt like no one ever made a concrete decision or they just changed their minds too often. I would have liked a better ending but the series overall was unique and really good.
This is the final book in the Replica series. It was non-stop action from start to finish. Surprising endings for many of the characters. Strong characters. Loved it! I hated to see the series end.
I loved this series and was sad to see it all come to an end. Black did a great job wrapping up all the loose ends and answered all the questions, as well as gives good happy endings to all the users. Can't wait to see what else Black writes.
This book sports a bittersweet ending where nothing has changed, yet everything is different. Still, there is some hope for change and that is good enough an ending to me.
