I wasn’t sure what to make of this book at the start. I couldn’t stop my interest in it but something seemed a little off. But as I got further in the intrigue and the fighting took off and I was all in. The mysticism added another level that made it even more interesting. I will definitely read the next in the series to find out more.
Had a great time with this! A fun and kinetic book, with clearly a lot of heart. The pacing is perfect, as it bounces between intense moments and levity just right. Characters feel familiar but not corny, action scenes are described in detail but not drawn out, and the overall plot constantly keeps you guessing about what comes next. In the course of this book there are also some surprising twists and turns, that I personally definitely appreciated. I’m very much looking forward to the sequel and what else this author will do in future!
"Raging Spirits: Tokyo Thunder" by Thor Bernard is a thrilling and action-packed novel that seamlessly combines martial arts, mystery, and the supernatural into a captivating adventure set in Tokyo. The story follows Brandon Daniels, an American translator who embarks on a journey to Tokyo at the request of his former professor, Professor Bingwen Qi. Brandon's diverse martial arts background adds depth to his character as a relatable and dynamic protagonist. As he arrives in Tokyo, he finds himself immediately thrown into danger when he becomes the target of an attack by the dangerous Shibata-gumi group. In this challenging situation, he receives unexpected assistance from Johnny, the professor's assistant, and his long-lost love, Megumi, who had learned of his trouble through connections within the dangerous group. The book skillfully weaves surprising twists and turns throughout the narrative, keeping readers engaged and eager to uncover the truth behind Professor Qi's disappearance. Bernard's descriptive writing style vividly brings the bustling streets of Tokyo to life, immersing readers in the city's atmosphere and the perils that Brandon faces. "Raging Spirits: Tokyo Thunder" delivers a gripping reading experience with well-paced action sequences, romance, mystery, and supernatural elements. Thor Bernard's storytelling talent shines through as he expertly balances these elements, creating a truly captivating story. Fans of martial arts, mystery, and supernatural genres will find this book thrilling and satisfying.
An action packed novel with some exploration of Japanese psyche and religious beliefs thrown in. This novel is perfect for those who enjoy Eric van Lustbader's books. Like him, this author's writing makes you feel as if you are in Japan and has similar elements of confusion on the part of the main character when dealing with others and his own internal 'feelings'. The big finale is interesting in its use of a religious character but give that a 'Nio' protects the Buddha against evil wouldn't it have recognised Daniels as being under duress rather than a threat so no need for 'soon'?
If you want an unusual novel that includes a 'bat shit' crazy villain then enjoy this book. I was given an ARC copy but the views are my own.
I added this book to my kindle because I love books about Japan and Yakuza. I knew there was a supernatural aspect because of the excerpt on Kindle, but I was pleasantly surprised how it showed itself. Like a slow burn, the story introduced characters and action before it revealed that part. The characters, especially Johnny and Brandon are well developed and believable in their actions. I just downloaded the second one. Recommend this book!
Having spent some time in Asia many years ago, and gaining an interest in the Martial Arts, I thought this story might be a welcome change from the usual thrillers I enjoy and... I was very pleasantly surprised. A very interesting new series. I highly recommend it.
