Brothers of Sapphire Ranch #2

Marrying the Mountain Man's Best Friend

Rate this book
In the wild mountains of the Montana Territory, the Coulter ranch is a place of family, loyalty…and a hidden fortune. Two Stones has lived most of his life as an outsider, shifting between two different worlds—the orderly village of his Salish family and wild mining towns. Though he’s not fully accepted anywhere, he’s made a name for himself trading between the tribes and the miners, even making a trusted friend or two along the way. When he arrives in Virginia City a week before Christmas, the last thing he expects is to be summoned to the bedside of one such friend, whose dying request is that Two Stones marry his daughter. Two Stones knows she’ll never accept him as a true husband, but she needs his protection. At least she’ll be safe in the Salish village with his parents while he continues doing the one thing he's good at, locating specialty trade items. Staying always on the trail—alone. After escaping the controlling clutches of her deceased husband’s family, all Heidi wants is to rebuild her life her way. Yet when she reaches the Montana Territory to reunite with her father, she doesn’t know what’s worse—arriving mere days before his death or hearing his dying wish that she marry a Salish brave he trusts. Two Stones may be a good man…but to marry him? Yet when she barely escapes an assault, it’s clear her father was right. She’s not safe alone in Virginia City. She’ll have to make the best of things as the wife of a native. The journey to Two Stones’s village proves far more perilous than he anticipates, yet Heidi’s resilience reveals a depth of character he didn’t expect. As they near the end of their trail, Two Stones begins to realize this inconvenient marriage might really be a Christmas gift he’ll always treasure. From a USA Today bestselling author comes a mountain novella filled with a marriage of convenience, desperate escape from danger, and the Christmas miracle of love that heals wounded hearts.

Audiobook (narrated by Leonor A. Woodworth)
I enjoyed this novella, positioned between the first two full-length novels in this series. I’m happy Two Stones got his own romance, quick though it was, and hope I’ll see more of him (and Heidi) in future Brothers of Sapphire Ranch books. [Note: The narrator is excellent.]

The only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars was because it was too short

Liked it.

It was just too short. Eagerly waiting for the next story. It was a quick read and you will enjoy it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5

Ah, I loved this. It was such a divine read. I think I actually teared up once… or twice, which is a feat in my book—no pun intended—It kept a smile on my face with nearly each word, not because it has a high percentage of comedy, simply because it made me happy. The characters were the suck-you-right-in kinda people and oh so tangible.
The pacing and character growth was superb for such a short story and I was instantly immersed.
I usually stray away from novellas because I’m an all around full-length-novel kinda girl, yet somehow, this managed to keep me tangled up AND I read it at snail’s pace because I didn’t want it to end *sobs* Another feat in my book since I tend to zip through novels—a habit I am attempting to break—*smiles sheepishly*
Anyway, I will definitely have to pick up another of Misty’s books, I read a couple a while back and I don’t why I haven’t sooner? Cleary, I’ve been missing out.
All that to say, my one and only complaint is that it was much too short. I just needed more. More Heidi. More Two Stones. More. More. More.
Naturally.
But it’s a novella. So I really shouldn’t complain. But…
I think that it had potential beyond a short novella and could have been expanded and explored. The tragedy 🥺

Short but well written! It almost feels like an insert into the series instead of a flowing sequel to the first.
I would have loved to have gotten a deeper look into Heidi's life as well as her developing relationship with Two Stones.
A good read, and I'd still recommend it, but not as good as book one of the series.

This book was just so sweet and tender. I loved Two Stones from the first book and I loved getting his story here. It would be so hard to be caught between two different worlds like he is. (Indian and white men) He has such great faith in God too. He is honorable and protective and treats Hiedi with such great respect. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer. I just loved their couple dynamic. But I loved every scene that we did get in this book! It had tender moments as well as intense ones too! I liked to slowly see Heidi’s heart soften again after all she went through. I love the Coulter family and spending Christmas with them was magical. I listened to it on audio and it was a quick three hour novella.

SPOILERS and book notes:
December, 1868 Virginia City, Montana Territory
This is so interesting for two stones the Native American : “This picture of two places so different felt like his own life—split between the serene village where his Salish family resided and the raucous, unpredictable world of the miners he traded for. Neither was a home to him, never had been. The closest thing he had to a home was the trail between the worlds, and riding through these soaring mountains was where he spent most of his time.” Two Stones job: “a man of the People who dresses as a white man, traveling throughout the mountains, locating trade goods that were hard to find. He'd built a reputation for this skill. For his ability to seek out what others could not.” The last dying request of her father was for them to marry. Two Stones totally saved her life like a super hero!!! From a man that was going to do unspeakable things. Two Stones glanced at her. "Are you hurt?" He was breathing hard, and fire sounded in his voice. She shook her head, her own breaths coming in short gasps. "I'm all right." He turned back to the man and released one of his hands from the cad's neck. In a fluid movement, Two Stones pulled a pistol from his waistband and stood to his feet, towering over the scoundrel lying on his back. "If you come near her again, you will breathe your last breath." The Wild West is horrible!!! Especially for women. You work in a brothal or you are married. “There were so many men in this wilderness city, and her father had warned that the few women here all worked for the brothels and saloons. How had she ever thought she would manage to keep herself safe and find respectable work? No other female had been able to.” I love that when the creepy whit men followed them and were about to attack it was Heidi that shot them and not Two Stone. She wasn’t about to put up with THAT crap. And two stone will comfort his wife after she shot a man to protect him. I love how often Two Stone prays for guidance and how he just wants to HONOR his wife. It’s so beautiful. “So he let his eyes flash. "I hate what that other man did to you. If he were not dead, I would hunt him. I would bring his actions down on his own head. Make him suffer for every day you did not feel safe and happy." He lowered his voice, but kept it hard with his anger. "I promise you this. I will be a good warrior, a good husband. I will guard you with my life. As long as I have breath, you will live in peace and plenty. Even after I am gone, I will leave you with all I can." And he expects nothing in return. And then just the comfort of cuddling afterwords was so tender. I LOVE Christmas at the Coltour family house!!! Only Jericho is married to Dinah! And then all the rest of the brothers hehe. Aw! Hiedi gets kidnapped by the companion of the guy she shot! And two stones gallops off to save her! She is tied up and soaked when he finds her. This ending!!!!! It’s too good. He gave her a ring for Christmas. She gave him the gift of a marriage in every way and then he said: “"I will wait as long as needed." His gaze was so earnest. "You are a gift beyond measure." A gift? Her?” “And when he angled toward her, she raised up to meet him partway. His mouth caressed hers, a touch so gentle, so reverent, her heart overflowed. God had blessed her to overflowing. When he pulled away, he scooped her into his arms, settling her on his lap. She curled into his chest with a contented sigh. "Merry Christmas, husband." "Merry Christmas, wife." His voice rumbled in her ear, soothing all the way through her. His strength surrounded her, his warmth seeping into her bones. And in the circle of his arms, she’d finally found home.”

(this review WAS going to be 2-stars...but the more I wrote this review, I became convinced that it was actually a 1-star).

It has been several years since I read a Christian historical romance (I think Janette Oke was my last, and I was at that point a book-hungry 17yo reader with no book money who devoured anything I could get my hands on for free - which meant the church library).
I'd heard good things about Beller, and decided to try out this novella for a road trip.

I don't think I feel the need to dip back into especially-Christian historical romance (different from historical romance just written by Christians - love those) again.

Biggest Dislikes:

There were several small things that bugged me, that were probably honestly just issues I have with novellas (my last two low-rated reads were novellas and I had similar issues with both). So I won't talk on what felt like a lack of world-building or genuine character development...because that's probably just an issue I have with novellas - and I will probably stop trying to enjoy novellas that aren't attached to series I already enjoy.

- The Christian moral eliteism. (Hi! I am a Christian, btw - so I am not coming from an outsider perspective).
Any non-Christian male character in this book is a bad person. Not a bad person by Christian standards alone, but by societal, generally accepted standards. Every non-Christian man is a murderer or rapist. Then, you have every non-Christian woman depicted as a sex worker and it is implied their profession is a result of them not having good enough morals (let's NOT discuss the complicated, traumatic situations and experiences that often led to women throughout history opting to engage in sex work - a DANGEROUS career for women throughout history - for survival).

- She's DIFFERENT...and it is because she was abused and he likes it
Two Stones makes a note that Heidi is 'different' than most white women, because she is meek and quiet and not loud and crass (he IS comparing her to sex workers, btw). That is gross.
The author makes several hints that Heidi has sexual trauma and is cautious around men...and it really grossed me out that these character traits that are CLEARLY the trauma from abuse are the ones Two Stones is drawn to.
Is this trauma ever really healed or at least addressed? No.

I do acknowledge that I am NOT the target audience for this book. I haven't read/enjoyed a historical romance in awhile, and don't usually read Christian romance.....but I feel the problems I have with this book are pretty significant, IMO.

This book would not appeal to non-Christian readers. This book is pretty insensitive to the raw truth of the difficult choices women had to make in the past. It does not do a good job at addressing trauma from physical and sexual abuse. None of the other books in the series (I skimmed the author's list quickly) seem to be about Heidi and Two Stones, so I don't hold out hope that maybe these problems will be addressed in future books - at least not in the way they should be addressed.

3.5 stars ⭐️ This book was a “Bonus Borrow” on hoopla, I listened to the audiobook.
I’ve never heard of this series but I definitely will be checking out the rest of the series. It was a sweet and short cozy romance. It followed a man named Two Stones as he navigates the two different cultures that of his own Native people and the settlers in the small mining town. There he’s requested by his dying friend to marry his daughter, Hedi and keep her safe from the riffraff that lurk in that town.

I feel it was a tad on the short side and perhaps some questions went unanswered for the time being. But the narrator for this audiobook did a wonderful job and I enjoyed this book very much.

Light hearted, sweet and honoring God themes it felt like a Hallmark Movie from the 90s. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

New author for me. Enjoyed all 8 books in audio via Hoopla and Libby library apps.
I haven't read this time period in a while, so I especially noticed the activities of daily life, societal expectations, issues with travel, and the state of medical science at that time. I enjoyed that there was a lady doctor, the first seen in that territory. I thought the author did well with the characters, overall storyline, and elements of crime and political corruption that provided the conflict. I especially enjoyed the moment in the last book when one of the 'bad men' stopped another from a deadly action, realizing that this was a line he wouldn't cross or allow the other to cross. The 8th book, Saving the Mountain Man's Legacy isn't listed in Goodreads at this time.

I look forward to reading more by this author.
Same review added to each book in the series.

I don't usually choose these books, but I was given this selection to read and review. I found the story lighthearted and beautiful. The Protagonists were believable and not corny at all. These types of books can be too sweet and not up my alley. I truly liked this story but wished the author had started to show me what the hero looked like before the female protagonist started seeing how handsome and strong he was physically and spiritually. I liked how she created his spiritual side first, but I also wanted to know that he was an attractive indigenous man with solid loyalty and honor. "Marrying the Mountain Man's Best Friend" was a light, short, inspirational story; I recommend reading it as an easy beach read.

At least the story is clean; God isn't exactly central, but he's a major topic especially towards the end. The plot is very predictable, almost to the point that the story is simply boring. The story is also too short to really get to know the characters or care about them. They certainly have some honorable qualities, but they also didn't have many flaws that were intriguing enough. The story was just too simple, and seemed more like rough draft material than finished product. It could use a lot more beefing up and fleshing out to make it memorable.

I listened to an audio version read by Leonor A. Woodworth; she did an ok job, but her reading was a little lackluster and her slight accent at times was distracting.

A Sweet, Stirring HEA - 4.75 stars

Heidi and Two Stones have a story suitable for older teens and adults. She had an abusive husband, now widowed, she joins her long absent father in a rough mining town overrun by unruly men. This is a dangerous time for a beautiful widow. But her father has a plan, the only problem is, can it succeed?
I liked the way Beller writes and makes a clear picture of two different cultures. It is a short story, so opportunities are limited in that aspect but the plot is good and the characters are likeable (except the bad guys, if course!).
If you like historical settings that are clean from sex and swears that take the reader back to wholesome times when character matters, you will enjoy this story.

Another tender story from Misty M. Beller! It's always great going back to the Coulter Ranch in the Montana Territory. This time the Coulter family's good friend, a Native American name Two Stones, promises a miner friend to marry his daughter in order to protect her. Heidi, a widow from an abusive marriage, is new to the rough Montana Territory and when her father dies, she quickly learns that it is a dangerous place for a young woman. She is not sure about being married to an Indian but agrees to a marriage in name only for her safety. Heidi is a survivor and she determines to survive this too. I recommend Marrying the Mountain Man's Best Friend to others since I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I received an advance e-book from the author. This is my honest opinion.

Heidi and Two Stones are forced to marry because of her father's dying wish. She has been abused and she is terrified of ever trusting another man. But, when necessity overrides her fears, she takes a chance.
Two Stones lives in two different worlds and has resigned himself to never finding love, but when his dear friend makes him promise on his deathbed to wed his daughter and care for her, he cannot deny that it may be part of the Creator's plan.

I enjoyed this novella. I was so glad to see Two Stones get his own happily ever after.
I loved how quickly Two Stones’ selfless care and protectiveness changed Heidi’s mind about depending on and trusting him. I mean, how could she not when he says “If you come near her again, you will breathe your last breath.” 🫠 so many sweet, romantic moments woven into the adventure and danger. I enjoyed Two Stones’ testimony and relationship with the Coulter brothers.

I listened to the audiobook and thought the narrator did a good job. I hope to listen to the rest of the series over the next few months.

so good!

I’m always a sucker for a wounded FMC to be shown what it is to truly be treasured and cared for by a strong yet tender MMC. This is one of those books and Two Stones works through his insecurities to be there for Heidi who doesn’t trust anyone after her dead husband used her horribly. In doing so he realizes God had saved him for this woman and he shows Heidi how much God does care about us and that all things work together for good to them that love Him. Can’t wait for the next book!!!

They marry as her father wishes but Virginia City is a wicked town filled with drunks and brothels. Two Stones convinces Heidi to journey with him to the home of his parents but winter and bad guys have different ideas. This sweet historical romance has wonderful characters, a fast paced plot, and lots of prayers for protection as the suspense ramps up.

Heidi Morgan arrives in Virginia City, Montana, to live with her father. Upon his unexpected death, he asks a friend, Two Stones, a Salish warrior and trader, to marry Heidi and take her away from the unsafe mining town.

Marrying The Mountain Man’s Best Friend by Misty M. Beller is my first story by this author. Since it is part of a series, I probably would have enjoyed it more if I had read the first book. I did like it.

I purchased a paperback copy of Christmas Bells And Wedding Vows, of which this novella is a part.

Heidi Morgan comes to her father now that she's grown so they can spend some time together. An unfortunate accident in the mine has her father very ill when his best friend Two Stone's arrives. Realizing that his best friend is passing away he agrees to not only look after his daughter but to take her as his wife to protect her and give her a future. Heidi, fresh out of a traumatic relationship isn't ready for another man to potentially run her life. The characters are well written and the story is an enjoyable read set around the holidays.

I really enjoyed Marrying the Mountain Man's Best Friend, which is book 2 in the Brothers of Sapphire Ranch series. Two Stones is not a member of the brothers of Sapphire Ranch, but a close friend.

Heidi had been treated very badly by her late husband and was determined never to be controlled by another man. She would never marry again. She was stubbornly independent to a fault.

Two Stones, a Native American, was the best friend of Heidi's father, who had made Two Stones promise him something on his death bed.

You will have to read this book to discover the rest of the story.

I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 because I considered it more of a novella, and I can't give such a short story a full 5 stars.

Two Stones & Heidi7

Two Stones & Heidi are pushed together by her dying father as he tries to make sure she'll be safe. They are married and start the journey to his people's village. Encountering evil men on the way, they believe they are safe when they reach the Coulter ranch. Yet danger finds them there and through it a strong bond is forged between the two virtual strangers, now married partners. Very good novella, and of course much too short, as is the novella premise

Two stones and Heidi

This is the tale of Two Stones and Heidi. Heidi's father, on this death bed, to marry his daughter and protect her from any and all harm in this hard land of lawlessness. Heidi was a young widow that had been abused by her former husband and wanted nothing to do with marrying again. They finally agreed to marry to ease here father's mind. You will annoy the adventure and exciting of their finding their happily after.

Two Stones has lived between the white man’s world and the Indians. As his friend is dying he is asked to marry the man’s daughter. Heidi is not in favor of the marriage at first as she was in an abusive relationship previously, but when she is accosted by a saloon owner and almost taken, she changes her mind, especially when Two Stones promises a marriage of convenience. An uplifting book about trust in God and others.

Loved it!

The only thing wrong with misty Beller's books is that they are too short for my liking!
Her stories are inspirational and wonderful. I could keep reading and reading and reading. The characters are passionate, and I can't wait for the next book in a series. I am loving these books!

An enjoyable read.

I enjoyed all the descriptions of Heidi and Two Stones travels from Virginia City to the ranch. Heidi carried a lot of hurt and distrust from her previous marriage making it very difficult for her to accept a new way of life.
Why does the story stop at the ranch when they were headed for his parents?
