Dan and Kara. We met them in the Gansett books, but now we get all the details of how they fell in love and of course they do not disappoint! They are such strong and colorful characters on their own, but together they are funny and a perfect match to each other’s wit and needs. Even though this is not a Gansett book, it is still on the island and so we get updates on all the couples and families. I was bawling when Grant shared his decision in the water that saved Dans life, when Dan and Grant were able to get the justice Steph’s step dad deserved, and laughing when scenes from the lingerie store made an appearance at several key times. Big Mac was everyone’s dad and this community welcomed this couple with open arms. The difference in siblings for Kara vs those (siblings or cousins) on the island was clear and entertaining. The ending of course saw us through several weddings and big events, but also left us on a cliffhanger with Kara’s family. Gansett lovers or just fans of Marie Force will love this book as it embodies all the great storytelling, vivid details, and amazing characters I always expect and enjoy when I enter her literary worlds!

Dan & Kara take centre stage in a prequel story that brilliantly builds on the glimpses of their romance. As seen through the eyes of the other Gansett Islanders.
But now they have their own book. With a story that adds more depth to their romance. Along with their signature banter, heat and all round cuteness.
As Marie navigates us through that first meeting, the day when Dan was missing at sea with his best friend Grant, and his brothers Mac and Evan McCarthy. To that infamous day when Kara's backstabbing sister Kelly arrived on the island and so much more!
And I adored every part of it and am so happy that one of my favourite Gansett Island couples has got their own story and spin off and can't wait to see what happens when they return to Maine!

5 Star Review Dan and Kara (Downeast 0.5) by Marie Force
Audio review:
I was beyond excited when I heard that Marie Force had a new series releasing. If this book is anything to go by then she has another winning series on her hand.
We have met Dan Torrington and Kara Ballard in previous books but now it is time for them to be the centre of attention as they kick off the Downeast series set on Bar Harbour, Maine.
I loved learning more about this couple and as always it was wonderful to catch up with my favourite Gansett Island characters.
This book was everything ai was hoping for and more and has only wet my appetite for the new series.
The narration by Avery Caris was good but I believe the story would be enhanced by dual or duet narration using a male narrator as well. Avery’s voice is easy to listen to and brought the story to life.

Welcome back to the world of Gansett Island, as one of the island’s favorite couples finally gets their own book. The couple: Dan Torrington & Kara Ballard.
Now…if you’ve been reading the Gansett Island series by Marie Force, you know that Dan & Kara’s story has plays out over several different books—they’ve been a ‘featured’ couple—but never the ‘main’ couple of a book. That all changes with this particular book, we get to revisit their whirling romance on Gansett Island, and get bits and pieces of their lives before coming to Gansettt and when they’ve been ‘off-island’ as well.
So why are they getting their own book now? Well—have you read Hurricane After Dark (the latest in the Gansett Island series)? If you have—you know how that particular book ended…and without giving away any spoilers—it’s exactly how this book ends as well.
I loved this book—Dan and Kara have always been a favorite couple within the series, and it was nice getting some of history (both as individuals and as a couple)—not to mention a different ‘view’ of a certain event from a previous Gansett Island book (the boys’ sailboat accident). Yes—I did just refer to the McCarthy men & their friends as ‘boys’.
I look forward to the new series coming out later this year or early next year, and I still hope that Dan & Kara will be popping in every so often within Gansett as well. This is a great book to not only introduce you to a beloved couple from Gansett Island—but the rest of the group as well, in addition to new individuals that will be popping up in the spinoff series Downeast (again later this year—or probably early next year). I give this prequel five out of five stars and will be going back to re-reading it numerous times throughout the rest of 2024.

Dan und Kara haben sich auf Gansett Island ein schönes Leben aufgebaut ,doch nun droht ein Anruf von Karas Familie dies zu zerstören.
Zwei ihrer Brüder wurden wegen Mordes verhaftet und Karas Eltern bitten nun Dan ,den berühmten Anwalt um seine Hilfe . Karas Familie hat ihr damals sehr weh getan und sie hat lange gebraucht um darüber hinweg zu kommen und nun ist sie schwanger und ist hin und hergerissen ob sie nun zurückkehren soll oder nicht..
An der Seite ihres Mann kehr Kara nun zu ihrer Familie zurück . Es ist ein langsamer Prozess wieder aufeinander zu zu gehen ,doch Familie ist nun mal Familie .Dan läßt jedoch keinen Zweifel daran ,das er zwar gewillt ist seine Schwäger zu verteidigen ,doch sollte die Familie Kara erneut verletzen sind sie weg.
Dies ist nicht nur eine Liebesgeschichte ,nein auch ein Krimi in dessen Verlauf die stark zerstörten Familienbande wieder geflickt werden und man gemeinsam versucht aus den früheren Fehlern zu lernen. Verzeihen ist nicht so einfach ,es erfordert viel Mut und Bereitschaft zu verzeihen . Ich kann sehr gut nachempfinden ,das Kara es sich nicht einfach gemacht hat mit der Entscheidung zurück zu ihrer Familie zu gehen nach allem was da vorgefallen war..

I love, love, love that we finally get a book for Dan and Kara! Theirs is such a long and bumpy journey that we followed through so many of the Gansett Island books, this book reminds us of the forgotten events, the milestones and even scenes from other books but from Dan and Kara's perspective - rather than the original characters.
It was so nice to go back to the beginning of their relationship and reminisce, to remember the chasing Dan had to do, the insecurities they both fought and the beautiful Gansett family that welcome both them and you with open arms each and every visit.
I struggle to like any of Kara's family and so I have reservations about the Downeast series, hopefully it will surprise me and her family members will redeem themselves! I look forward to accompanying Dan and Kara for the first Downeast book...will she stay after that? It's difficult to know as she has such a poor relationship with everyone except the amazing Bertha. The best Grandmother and friend she could ever have.

Rückblick - wie alles begann
Hier kommt ein Downeast von Dan und Kara, die wir ja bereits aus dieser Reihe (Gansett Island) kennen. Habe alle Bücher dieser Reihe gelesen und bin jedes mal begeistert.
Dan & Kara, ihre Liebesgeschichte von Beginn an, ist hier etwas anders für mich gewesen.
Zuerst einmal es ist natürlich genauso herzlich und liebevoll geschrieben, mit allen Insel Bewohnern und diversen Familienmitgliedern ein nach Hause-Kommen-Gefühl.
Dennoch war es nicht ganz so spannend, da ich vieles davon schon wusste.
Es bekam lediglich den letzten Schliff, was die Reihe natürlich bereichert.
Der Schreibstil wieder absolut flüssig, emotional und lässt keine Fragen offen. Lücken werden geschlossen und runden das Ganze ab.
Auch gut als Einzelband lesbar.
Fazit: Ein Muss für alle Fans der Autorin und Gansett Island.

Yes, finally Dan and Kara's story all in one place. I love re-visiting this beloved couple back to the start and I loved every moment. You forget that you first meet Dan back in Grant's book which is book 4!! Dan is a favourite of mine as i loved how he isn't what you would expect and that he never gives up on Kara. Marie did this so well and made it that in certain places you are thinking where they are expanded as it just flows so well. I loved this so much and we got to know more about Kara's family who will be centre stage in the new series. The only negative comment about this book is it has made me want to start from the beginning again and re-read all the Gansatt series - now is that negative probably not as i do like to re-read this series at least once a year if i can!!

I was so excited when I heard Marie Force had a new series coming out and I have to say Dan & Kara is the perfect prequel to the new Downeast Series. It has everything you want in a prequel, just enough to get interested but not too much to spoil what’s coming.
We have met Dan Torrington and Kara Ballard before but now we really get to know them as they are first up in the new series set in Bar Harbor, Maine.
This book took me to a happy place because not only did I get to know Dan and Kara I also caught up with my favourite characters from Gansett Island so this really was a win/win for me. I’m so excited for my next visit to Barry Harbour and I can’t wait to see where Ms Force takes us in what looks like a hit series to me.

Die "Gansett Island" Reihe von Marie Force ist eine umfangreiche Liebesromanreihe rund um eine zauberhafte, kleine Insel mit vielen liebenswerten Charakteren. Zu ihnen gehören auch die Figuren Dan & Kara, die zwar bisher nie ihr eigenes Buch erhalten haben, dessen Geschichte aber trotzdem fortlaufend erzählt wurde.
Marie Force ist immer für eine Überraschung gut, denn die Handlung von "Dan & Kara: A Downeast Prequel" ist für Fans der "Gansett Island" Reihe eine riesige Reise durch fast alle Bände mit vielen neuen Szenen und Details, die großen Spaß machen.
Gleichzeitig ist das Buch der perfekte Einstieg für neue Leser und somit ein wundervolles Spin-Off.

Ich war ab der ersten Seite wieder in der Geschichte rund um Gansett gefangen und Marie hat mich hier mit Kara und Dan ,zwei nicht so ganz neuen Charakteren wieder einmal verzaubert und ich durfte viele "alte" Bekannte wieder begegnen. Obwohl es schon eine Weile her ist , dass ich die Reihe gelesen habe hatte ich sofort ein Gefühl von nach Hause kommen. Es wird stürmisch , romantisch und auch spannend. und Kara und Dan haben sich ihre emotionale Story sowas von verdient und es ist nicht nur für die Zwei ein Neuanfang ,denn ich hoffe bald mehr von Downeast zu lesen. Marie hat mich auf alle Fälle super neugierig gemacht und ich gebe eine klare Leseempfehlung

Dan and Kara finally have their own story told. I have always lived these two and am thankful to have received their story in one book. Dan is a well known LA lawyer who has a passion to see justice on behalf of his clients. Kara works for her family's business and manages the Gansett location. As these two meet and fall in love, we find they really are a match made in Gansett. Enjoy catsup with friends form our favorite island and hearing more about Dan and Kara's love story.

If you have read the books of the Ganset Island series, you already know (and probably like/love) Dan and Kara. There story is intertwined with those of the main characters of the series.
In the prequel to a new series their story is revisited and I am sure I have read most of their story already. I still enjoyed reading it and am curious about the Downeast series.
Kara and Dan are both lovely. I really enjoy Dan‘s obnoxiousness and the way Kara makes fun of it. Definitely curious to learn more about them … and grandma Bertha.

Finally, Dan and Kara got their own book
Dan and Kara have already been such a huge part of the Gansett Island series. Finally, they got their own book.
It was fun to go back in time to revisit the beginning of their story. It was amazing to see Dan get Charlie released from prison so quickly. Everything about that party of the story always endeared Dan to me. And I am sure others.
The couple had some interesting things happen in the beginning but they were so obviously meant to be together.

I so enjoyed reading Dan & Kara’s story. While their story has played out in many of the Gansett series books, this book is them front and center. Going back to when they first met thru current day, we get their perspective on their romance; from Dan trying to win Kara over, to the horrible boat crash, to Kara trusts issues; to finally accepting they are perfect together with their quick wit and banter. A wonderful couple to read about and looking forward to their spin off series. A must read for Gansett Island fans.

I have never read book by Marie Force that I didn't love and this one is no exception! It was great reuniting with her Gansett Island family but i think Dan and Kara are probably 2 of the best characters that she has ever created. Right from the start you laugh at their antics but feel anger at the betrayals they both suffered. Finding their HEA took time and persistence but was well worth it! Bravo Marie! Can't wait to read the next series! Love them all

Dan and Kara!!!
I believe I have now read most if not all of Marie Force’s books! I really enjoyed this one about Dan and Kara and revisiting characters from the Gansett Island series. I look forward to the new Downeast series. Dan and Kara are a great couple. Love their teasing!! Anyone wanting to read a book a heartwarming book, this is it! Thank you, Ms. Force for your amazing writing which keeps me turning page after page. Also looking forward to the State of Suspense book! Please continue to write series.

Dan & Kara
Really Marie ... Leaving us hanging again with that last sentence from Hurricane After Dark. I thought this book was going to be about Kara's family crisis but it was all about there story. As much as I love them I'm disappointed because we have to wait. Ugh I hate waiting !!! Love Dan and Kara having to put up with him. They are too funny together. Excited to read about the new series. Did I mention I hate waiting ..lol

Wonderful!
Welcome back to Gansett Island and another look at most of the couples we’ve met there over the years, this time told thru the timeline of Dan & Kara’s relationship. Dan & Kara have been side characters in many previous books but never had their own story. It’s so great to learn more about them and get ready for a whole new series set in Maine. I love reading Marie Force, she’s one of my all-time favorite authors.

It’s fun to finally have Dan and Kara’s story all in one place. As a longtime fan of the Gansett Island Series, the story is an overview of everything to date. Not all the details are there, but it is a quick summary. Knowing the rest of the story, I can’t help wishing for a little more fluidity to the story instead just skimming over the highlights. Keep in mind that this is a prequel to a new series and we have lots to see and fall in love with still to come.

OMG I absolutely loved finally getting Dan and Kara’s story as well as catching up on some of my favorite Gansett Island residents. Love Dan so much and if I had a dollar for every time he made me swoon I’d have a decent haul. Kara is awesome! I love her sass and indifference to Dan at first that you can almost tell won’t last too long. I love how she keeps it real with him. They are amazing together, equal parts adorable and sexy. Love everything about this story!!

Highly recommended, especially for Gansett fans
So good to have Kara and Dan’s whole story and to revisit with so many of the wonderful characters on Gansett Island. This is a full-size novel, but is a prequel to an expanded story of Dan and Kara away from Gansett, and it does end in cliffhanger.
This is a good start to what appears to be a new series, and I will be jumping right into the next book.

Dan and Kara are such a fun couple, and it is wonderful to get even more of them from the very beginning, but in a new way and with so much new content added to their story. Visiting Gansett Island is always a treat, and Dan and Kara's book was not only a fantastic, quick read but an excellent setup for the new series with the Ballard's.

Dan & Kara
Cannot wait for the book 2. The story is good, the characters are believable, funny, family love and dysfunction. The book was a work of art. Love is the central theme and when you follow the masters plan, life has a tendency to work out. I laughed, I was sorrowful and happy to revisit my favorite island. Thank you for the memories.

Audiobook Review
Dan and Kara's Story
I enjoyed listening to Dan and Kara's story and reliving what happened on Gansett during the beginning of their relationship. Even though I've listened to all of this series, it was great having a recap and some new information. I'm looking forward to this new series. The narration was good, too.

Dan and Kara by Marie Force
This is a more in-depth look at Dan and Kara. We had met them previously in other Gansett Island books. I have read all the Gansett Island book and have throughly enjoyed each one. This book is definitely on the same level as her other books. Now to see what this new series is about.

Loved it!
I really enjoyed getting Dana nd Kara's full story. I loved the playful banter between them. There are a lot of laughs with these two. They really went through a lot of crazy stuff early on in their relationship, but it certainly made them stronger. I look forward to the new series with her family. Sounds like it is going to be really good.

I really enjoyed Dan and Kara’s story and even more now that it is condensed into one book. Their story now flows better because you are focused on this one couple. The additional characters and better background gives you a better understanding of Kara’s family. I can’t wait to see where Marie will go with the spin off series. Grab your copy today and enjoy!!
