This is a detective thriller with a supernatural twist. Kaitlyn dreams her past lives to get clues about cases she is currently working on.

While the premise sounded interesting, the execution unfortunately fell flat for me. The dreams seemed more realistic to me than an experienced detective being suspicious of a person of interest just because they watch Criminal Minds as if he could cover up a murder from watching tv shows.

This audiobook narrator did a good job of portraying the characters!

Thank you so much to Netgalley, Karoline Anderson, and HighBridge Audio for providing this free ARC. This is my honest review. This published on October 29th.

Once you've read a detective thriller, you've read them all. Not with Karoline Anderson. She's brought something into this book that I haven't seen in this genre before and I'm here for it. This book kept me engaged, enthralled, and kept me turning the pages from the start. It had the classic "whodunit" while also making your mind turn a bit with the amazing details you're trying to piece together in other places. Fantastic story, fabulous characters. Can't wait to read book 2!

Wow.. so much to unpack but it would be hard to do without spoilers but I’m going to try.

I’ll start with the positive.
The audio narrator did a great job but for most it would have to be sped up at least a little as it’s painfully slow which doesn’t match the feeling the book tries to convey. But her different voices were great and she didn’t over dramatize it which is great.

The story itself was enjoyable. It was clearly set up to be a potential series even being very obvious about a future love interest. It came off as the author didn’t want to pull focus from everything else to get a relationship underway but wanted to introduce potential.

Now for the challenges…

The entire book sounded like the author was talking down to the reader. The explaining of such basic things was condescending. For example they talk about a 3 year old and literally offered that (paraphrase) “of course the three year old could be ruled out as a serial killer.” Ya think?

I don’t mind when authors use “big words” instead of the typical words used in books and everyday conversation but when there are conversations like a doctor talking to a patient you have to make it realistic. Like saying “I don’t think you broken your arm” you wouldn’t say radius and ulna in the context that the author did. I actually said out loud that the book sounded like a doctor writing a book and then come to find out after the fact that the author is instead an MD.

I think that’s part of the problem. It’s one that can be fixed easily with having an editor soften the prose and smooth it out but that didn’t happen here. Other issues are that the POV jumping without chapter headings of who was talking and when was very jarring and harder to keep track of especially since the FMC dreams about her past lives.

One last thing I’ll mention is when you above a book where it is set in the real world with real places etc.. and then you have something unrealistic in police and or court procedure it comes off that reader wasn’t done properly.

So if you can deal with a bunch of execution issues the story has merit and with some experience this debut author may have some great books down the road.

Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette Audio for the free audio ALC so I could leave my voluntary review.

My rating system since GoodReads doesn’t have partial stars and I rarely round up.

⭐️ Hated it
⭐️⭐️ Had a lot of trouble, prose issues, really not my cup of tea (potentially DNF’d or thought about it)
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Meh, it was an ok read but nothing special
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Really enjoyed it! Would recommend to others
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding! Will circle back and read again

I loved the premise! Kaitlyn is a detective with a supernatural ability; in her dreams, she remembers her past lives and they help her to solve crimes. Brilliant! Kaitlyn does have to be careful though, as not everyone would be supportive of her gift and it certainly wouldn't hold up in court as evidence!

In the early part of the story, I found some of the timelines confusing, but once it clicked and all fell into place, I was hooked.

A missing persons case that becomes a race against time to find a serial killer, with great characters who were brought to life by Shannon Condon's excellent narration.

4.5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Karoline Anderson and Highbridge for an ARC in return for an honest review.

The story is most definitely a police procedural/ crime thriller. It’s reminiscent of older episodes of CSI, where the focus is on forensics and the investigation. There is some small character development, but the story really is a step by step look into the process of crime scene analysis and how a case is approached.
There is some small supernatural aspects to the story that were unexpected. The main character, Detective Kaitlyn Kruse, has past life dreams. At first their appearance in the story doesn’t seem to make sense, but then you learn the relevancy and start to look forward to them. It’s a unique thing to insert into such a cut and dry police procedural, but it helped break up the monotony of the story.
I will be looking for the second book, since now I need to know more about Kaitlyn.

Karoline Anderson's debut novel arrives like a whisper from another life—literally. Detective Kaitlyn Kruse's supernatural ability to access memories from her past lives transforms what could have been a standard police procedural into something genuinely unsettling and original.

The premise hooked me immediately: bodies discovered on Seattle's hiking trails. Karoline Anderson wastes no time establishing the stakes, but it's her handling of Kaitlyn's past-life dreams that elevates the material. These aren't convenient plot devices but feel genuinely otherworldly, with previous incarnations of Kaitlyn offering fragmented clues that create more questions than answers.

What struck me most was how Karoline Anderson uses the supernatural element to explore themes of identity and pattern recognition. There's something deeply human about questioning which parts of ourselves are truly "us" versus inherited from experiences we can't quite place.

The Seattle setting breathes through every page. Karoline Anderson clearly knows these trails and neighborhoods, and the city becomes almost a character itself—beautiful but harboring dark secrets beneath its pristine surface. The contrast between the natural beauty of the hiking trails and the horror of what's discovered there creates an atmosphere of violated sanctuary that lingers long after reading.

Detective Joe Riley proves to be more than just a partner; he's Kaitlyn's anchor to the present when her past lives threaten to overwhelm her. Their dynamic feels authentic, built on professional respect rather than forced romantic tension. The supporting cast, from forensics to suspects, feels lived-in rather than merely functional.

The ending promises more adventures for Detective Kruse, and I'm genuinely excited to see how her past lives will complicate future cases. This is exactly the kind of fresh voice crime fiction needs.

Very different!

Kaitlyn is a detective who just caught a new case. A missing woman has now been found murdered on a hiking trail…partially buried.

But that’s not all. Once they find this woman, they start finding other body parts….in the same area. Some are MANY years old… what the heck is going on here?

As they investigate (her and her partner Joe), things start happening to Kaitlyn…and honestly, I was a bit confused at times… but then…IT ALL CLICKED!

Kind of multiple timelines, as some of the cases are stemming from many years ago…and so, the investigations were also from many years ago…

Kind of otherworldly… and, if you read it, you’ll understand…but I don’t want to say any more…

Kind of scary, as one of the timelines involves a nurse in the 90’s…and I can vouch that things were VERY different back then…

All in all though, a really good book with some ideas that I’ve never seen explored before.

4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!

This is a start to a new series by Anderson. This was an interesting story because Kaitlyn Kruse has a supernatural ability that her partner isn’t aware of but helps her solve crimes. She can remember her past lives in her dreams, which shows her information that helps her solve a case in the present time. In this first case Kaitlyn and her partner, Joe Riley are called out to a shallow grave of a young women and while they are there, they also find a human finger bone. They call in the dogs and before you know it, they have 4 bodies (3 female and 1 male). Kaitlyn and Joe now suspect they are after a serial killer. As the days go by Kaitlyn dreams become more intense and her past life of Susan is showing her something that she might have done that might impact this present case. The chapters alternated between the present time and Kaitlyn’s dreams. But the first couple of times you don’t realize what is happening until you are back to the present time. After that you become aware of the alternating chapters. There were plenty of twists and turns and a few red herrings thrown in. It took me a while to get into the book but once I got used to the alternating chapters and got caught up in the mystery it picked up speed. I would recommend this book if you were into supernatural mysteries. Thank you to Edelweiss and Flare Books for providing an advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I recieved this audiobook as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
So as usual, as this is an audiobook, I'm going to base my review in two parts, one for the story and second for the audio part.

The story Part : the plot had great potential, and the concept is also good. There is some good detective work too.
At few places the story seemed to drag a bit, and also few conversations between the characters didn't seem very realistic.
And the explanations of few twists, logics and few terms seemed a bit nagging like to me.
The concept of the previous life visions and all seemed good, and there seemed to be a potential of this being a series. The characters were well described, and also the progress is well written.
The emotional turmoil, and the moral compas was well depicted, I did like the decisions taken by the ML and those even seemed to be well justified.
There is so much more the author can write and explore, and I hope the author does some magic for the next book.

Now for the audio : the narrator sure did a good work, as the narration kept me engrossed in the story.
But there were few times where I felt the pace was slow, and I did adjust the speed but couldn't enjoy much then.
The different voiceovers and changes were enjoyable. There were not overdramatic expressions but the narration seemed pretty subtle and enjoyable.

Coming to my rating: out of 5 stars ⭐️
Title : ⭐️⭐️⭐️ did intersst me to select it
Cover: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ good graphic
Character development: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ the journey that the character went through was impeccable and I did like the emotional and moral insight in the story.
Writing style: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I felt the emotions and lines throught the audio.
Originality: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ the plot is good
Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ with such unique Plot there is so much the author can attain. I hope the author explore various themes that can be combined and comes with more uniqueness in the next book.
Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3.75 stars. I did enjoy the story, but there are few elements that can be improved, nonetheless I'm very much positive to read the next book by the author, as I did enjoy the story.

Audio rating : out of 5 🎶
Narration Quality : 🎶 🎶 🎶 🎶 the narration and different voiceovers was quite enjoyable. I did love the portrayal of emotions in the audio
Pacing : 🎶 🎶 🎶 at few places the pace was slow, so I had the adjust the speed of the audio, but increasing the speed made the audio a bit not enjoyable.
Production Quality : 🎶 🎶 🎶 I did like the smoothness of the narration.
Engagement : 🎶 🎶 🎶 🎶 the narration kept me engaged with the story.
Overall Enjoyment : 🎶 🎶 🎶 🎶 overall I could say, I did like the narration, but there is still room for improvement, which can make the listening experience more enjoyable.

Killer Insight is a serial killer cat story with a paranormal twist. The detective on the case looks similar to several recent victims and throughout the story her ability to remember her past lives is revealed.

When she dreams, her past lives. She finds at connections between at least 4 past selves. I was drawn to this part of the story and it first came into play about 30% into the book.

I liked the detective perspective and details in the early stages of finding the bodies. I felt like I was watching an episode of Bones or Law and Order SVU with the detailed analysis of the bodies and crime scene. It goes from body discovery to the court room.

Overall it was a very unique story- I liked that it pulled in the supernatural element with her dreaming abilities that made it a little more than a typical serial killer chase. It kept me wondering and guessing the whole time, did not expect the twist.

Narrator was expressive and I enjoyed listening to them.

I would classify this as a slow chick-lit police procedural with a hint of the supernatural. The narration was good once the right speed was chosen. For me that was around 1.5 -1.75.

I was initially drawn to the story by the blurb, thinking the inclusion of past-lives might add an interesting aspect to the story. Sadly, this was not the case. The use of it was so limited and the explanation of the ‘realistic’ kind of dreams came off as mundane.

The author clearly did a lot of research for this story. Unfortunately, they seem to have included all of it regardless of whether it was relevant or not. It was crazy how much of the ‘procedure’ from ‘police procedure’ was detailed when it wasn’t necessary and came off as a teaching exercise. In addition, instead of utilising subtext, it was overridden by explanations.

Personally, I found this a struggle to get through. If the book hadn’t been provided by Netgalley, it would have been a dnf.

I read the audiobook and the narrator was not a good fit for this book! I would’ve given this book a little more if it wasn’t for that.

The story itself and the main character are interesting.

Despite having a preference for first person POV, I wish the book was written in third person. The internal dialogue was really annoying and it was hard to know when it was internal monologue or just a description of what was going on.
The dialogues were not realistic more often than not. But I’m not sure if it’s the narrator’s delivery or the writing.

The pacing was fine. As a true crime girly, I’m not sure if the serial killer made sense and if the evidence was actually enough to go to trial but at the same time people have been convicted with less I guess.

I would be inclined to read more books as a palette cleanser but it would have to be a different narrator.

Killer Insight, written by Karoline Anderson and narrated by Shannon Condon, is the first book in the Kaitlyn Kruse series. This book introduces us to Detective Kruse and her partner Joe Riley, who are investigating a missing persons case. When the body of the missing woman is found, along with some other bodies and evidence, the detectives begin wondering if this could be a case of a serial killer. But luckily for the pair Detective Kruse has dreams of her past lives, that help in specific and subtle ways to help her with her cases.
I loved the storytelling that this book conveyed, and the ways that the characters related to each other. I also really enjoyed the stories of the past lives, and the ways that Detective Kruse had to figure out what her dreams were telling her. I would definitely recommend this book to any crime/mystery fans! Thank you to NetGalley and to the author, publisher, and narrator of this book for an ALC in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars.

In chapter 1, a decomposed body is being viewed by Seattle homicide Detective Kaitlyn and her partner Joe Riley. The woman had been missing for a week and her body was found a short distance from a hiking trail. A finger bone is found not too far away. This body has all her fingers so cadaver dogs are called in. Three other bodies are found. Seems there is a serial killer loose.

Kaitlyn has dreams. The explanation behind her dreams was rather outlandish, but hey, I'm reading fiction. I liked the parts involving crime procedure. I liked the explanation for everything the police did. I've read thousands of detective books so I already knew this information but it was good for the novice reader. I liked Kaitlyn and Joe. I love serial killer stories.

It was pretty obvious by some of the explanations that the book was written by a doctor. I won a Kindle copy of the story in a Goodreads giveaway. I would read another Kaitlyn book.

I like the idea behind this book. A detective who can remember past lives and it helps them do their work? Sounds like an interesting twist. Why not? The issue is that the plot really isn't there. There's just not a lot going on, not a lot of mystery there, and the author talks to us like this is our first day. Does anyone need terms like MO explained to them? Or how an autopsy works? The story world isn't rich enough and the characters aren't dense enough. It's not bad, as debut novels go, but in a saturated field of thrillers and mystery novels, it's not compelling enough.

A second book in the series is on its way, so it seems that it must be pleasing some people. Maybe if it appeals to you, give it a try and make up your own mind. It's a quick read, and sometimes that's just the ticket.

Thank you to the publisher for the ARC of this book for review

This story really caught my attention, because the main character, Kaitlyn Kruse, has a supernatural gift and her partner does not know about it. This ability helps her solve a lot of cases. Kaitlyn can remember her past lives in her dreams and can use them to solve the current mysteries. The chapters switch between the now and Kaitlyn’s dream sequences, and you figure out the pattern pretty quickly. There are many twists and turns, and there are a few red herrings along the way. I really liked the narrator's voice and how she effortlessly switched between characters. If you like the supernatural in your thrillers, I would recommend this book.

I received an advanced audio copy of "Killer Insight" by Karoline Anderson, thanks to Highbridge Audio and NetGalley. Set in my hometown, the story follows Detective Kailyn Kruse, who utilizes her supernatural abilities to solve a complex case involving three people murdered at the same location, with evidence pointing to different killers.

The book captivated my attention throughout, and I particularly enjoyed the main character's energetic and passionate approach to her work. While the novel was engaging and the concept intriguing, there was potential for a bit more backstory to deepen the narrative. Nonetheless, the foundation laid out in this story seems promising for a series, and I'm excited to see how the author develops it in future books.

Killer Insight
A Kaitlyn Kruse Novel
by Karoline Anderson
Narrated by Shannon Condon

I am always honored to receive a book for review however I was not a huge fan of this one. In the first chapter, the narrator incorrectly pronounced "flange" and the author a need to tell us that flanges are finger bones and patellas are knee caps. Right away it flagged this as a book that "talked down" to readers; despite this being an age where we can look up in seconds (using the internet) anything we do not understand. For the very few readers that don't know what flanges are. Also, I felt that the writer wasn't a huge mystery fan when a HOMICIDE detective wonders if a corpse trained dog was alerting on treats (!).

Without adding spoilers, I also felt slightly betrayed by the description.

I initially found the narration stilted, however I finished the book, and this book did improve as it continued, however in this age of stellar offerings, this one was not outstanding for me.

That said, this book received numerous 5 star reviews on Netgalley so if the description appeals to you, give it a read / listen.

Overall the book was enjoyable. When I began the book read as if there might have been a book or two before this one, but there isn’t.
The main character Kaitlyn was interesting. She has dreams of past lives. This aspect I didn’t really care for, but it did help her in solving this case so I guess it added up.
The language used was a little off putting and technical. A lot of unnecessary explanations for some situations.
The book has a slight conclusion because it does end and solve the case, but it’s left open for a sequel or series.

Overall the book was interesting and kept my attention so I would probably read/listen to the next one if it’s published.

Thank you NetGalley for the copy.

2.5 rounded up

While the book description was very intriguing and a different take on the regular detective stories, this book ultimately was just meh for me. I found the dreaming and past lives part to be too far-fetched for my personal liking and it seemed like the story dragged on a lot longer than it really needed to.

The narrator was very clearly spoken and easy to understand, however the narration was very slow for me. I ultimately had to increase narration speed to 2.5x-2.7x or I found myself getting distracted.

I am always grateful to receive a book/audiobook for an honest review as it gives me a chance to explore new authors. Thank you to NetGalley and RB Media for the advanced copy of this audiobook in exchange for my voluntary and honest review.

Thank you NetGalley and Highbridge Audio for the ARC of this audiobook for my honest review

I have mixed feelings, the plot was amazing. I really enjoyed the whole story I just didn’t like how it was written. The police protocol was telling me everything like I knew nothing, which yeah can be good if you really don’t but most likely if you like a crime novel you’ll know most of the stuff and if you don’t it’s pretty easy to get the gist without being taught everything and explained in detail everything. Thats just what I don’t need from a book though, I also didn’t really care for the characters. I just really liked the unique dream/another life knowledge and the way it was like how can I apply this to what’s happening right now.

Killer Insight by Karoline Anderson

4 Stars

This detective thriller has a different spin. The leading lady experiences former lives through realistic dreams. Being a detective, she's researched the individuals whose lives she remembers in her dreams and those memories aid her in solving crimes.

Set in modern day Seattle, a serial killer's burial ground is found. Only there appears to be no real evidence to link anyone to these deaths. And what about the one outlier - the victim who doesn't fit the mold? How does it all fit?

This was one I couldn't put down. It's also a debut novel, so I'm excited to see what this new author comes up with next!

This book is a cool mix of crime and the supernatural. Detective Kaitlyn Kruse solves murders with the help of visions from her past lives—yep, it’s wild, but it works. The story moves fast, and the idea is super original. Some parts feel a little over-the-top or repetitive, but overall, it’s a fun, twisty read. Definitely worth checking out if you like your thrillers with a weird (in a good way) twist. I’m definitely ready to read the next book in this series.

Nice concept. A Seattle detective has unusually vivid dreams, which seem to give hints as to where to go next in investigations.
However, mixing this with fairly standard police procedurals turned what could have been a tense, edgy tale into something surprisingly mundane and even, at times, preachy.
A decent start but it needs more conflict, especially within the team (everyone is so nice and supportive), more sense of jeopardy (yes she was stalked but it never felt really threatening), and more zip (more highs and lows in emotion, tone and tempo, less repeating a message or point).

A police procedural with a touch a paranormal. A body is found in what appears to be a shallow grave. Once the medical examiner arrives, additional bodies are found. The main character Kaitlyn has vivid dreams that provide leads on the current case as well as cases and situations that assist her in finding answers. This is a fairly fast paced story set in picturesque Seattle. There are twists and turns to please everyone.

Killer Insight by Karoline Anderson is a gripping, fast-paced mystery that hooks you from the first chapter and keeps you listening intently until the very end. The audiobook, brought to life with a compelling performance, adds another layer to an already intriguing storyline, making it a thrilling experience for fans of the genre. The audiobook narration is particularly strong. The voice actor delivers a nuanced performance, capturing the tension of the plot while also bringing the characters’ personalities to life. There’s a noticeable range in the narrator’s voice, effortlessly switching between characters and managing the suspenseful moments with expert timing. The pacing of the audiobook aligns well with the plot, maintaining a sense of urgency throughout. I really enjoyed Killer Insight! The story had a great pace, the mystery kept me guessing, and the touch of the paranormal was just enough to be fun without taking over the plot. Tansy, the main character, is such a standout—clever, down-to-earth, and easy to root for. I loved her voice and her unique approach to solving the mystery. If you’re into cozy mysteries with a dash of intuition and charm, this one’s worth the read. Looking forward to more from this series!

I had to read this book for a class. I wanted to like it, because I liked the premise and idea. But the writing. . . I just felt was so bad! Instances where the protagonist was talking with a potential love interest seemed so off, and cringe. I really struggled with the dialogue, and the narration. The trial was unrealistic with timing, and some things were not realistic. Ultimately, 1 out of 5 stars. This was a tough read.
