About the author

Jaume Cabré i Fabré (Barcelona, 1947) is a philologist and Catalan writer.

Graduated in Catalan Philology by the University of Barcelona, high-school professor in leave of absence and teacher to the University of Lleida, member of the Philological Section of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans.

During many years he has combined literary writing with teaching. He has also worked in the television and cinematographic scripting. With Joaquim Maria Puyal he was the creator and scriptwriter of the first Catalan television series: La Granja (1989-1992), after which followed other titles like Estació d'Enllaç (1994-1998), Crims (2000) and the tvmovies La dama blanca (1987), Nines russes (2003) and Sara (2003). He has also written, together with Jaume Fuster, Vicenç Villatoro and Antoni Verdaguer, the script of the Antoni Verdaguer's films La teranyina (1990), based on his novel, and Havanera (1993).

Quindici racconti legati da un fil rouge, non sempre così chiaro, evidente, ma che c’è. Dice Cabré:

"Lo spazio limitato di un racconto obbliga lo scrittore a elidere, a dare per scontate molte vite anteriori, a riassumere in un tratto un'intera descrizione morale o fisica... e allora lo scrittore deve aguzzare l'ingegno, ma anche il lettore deve farlo".

Aguzzare l’ingegno è faticoso, ma anche allettante, stimolante, e questi racconti costituiscono un eccellente banco di prova. Ambientati in epoche e luoghi diversi, a tema c’è la fragilità della condizione umana in tutte le sue flessioni e sfumature.
Come sempre accade nelle raccolte di racconti, anche qui la qualità non è omogenea, è discontinua per densità e intensità, ma non è mai mediocre. Particolare curioso: l’ultimo racconto – “Viaggio d’inverno” – in realtà è l’antefatto del primo.

Przeczytałem gdzieś, że ta książka była wprawką do "Wyznaję" (wciąż mojej ulubionej książki tego autora). Chyba się zgadzam z tą opinią.
W pierwszej chwili wydaje się, że jest to zwykły zbiór opowiadań. Każdy rozdział to inne postaci, inna epoka, wydarzenia a pozór nie związane ze sobą. W pewnym momencie jednak wszystko zaczyna składać się w całość. Pojawiają się powiązania, wskazówki, pułapki, zagadki... I to jest fajne. Rzeczywiście wygląda, jakby Cabré sprawdzał się w konstruowaniu opowieści z pozornie nieprzystających do siebie elementów; że ćwiczy konstruowanie opowieści zbudowanej na aluzjach, szaradach.
Poza tym jednak - ta książka jest o niczym. Ciekawe ćwiczenie literacko-intelektualne, ale niemal bez treści. Fajna zabawa, czyta się jednym tchem, ale zostaje niewiele. Może, jeżeli kiedyś przeczytam drugi raz, odnajdę w niej coś głębszego. Na razie nie bardzo. Co w niczym nie zmienia faktu, że czytałem z wielką przyjemnością. Bardzo lubię jak Cabré pisze, nawet jeżeli pisze o niczym.

Wirtuozerska zabawa gatunkami na przykładzie skrajnie różnych opowiadań, powiązanych cienkimi nićmi artefaktów i bohaterów. Ten zbiór to przede wszystkim wielka przyjemność z obcowania z formą i stylem Cabrégo, który jak nikt inny potrafił zestawić ze sobą tak skrajnie nieprzystające do siebie historie w całość.

Jaume Cabré és un dels escriptors que millor domina alhora la llengua catalana i el ritme narratiu. I es gaudeix tant en novel·les monumentals com Jo confesso com en els contes de Viatge d'hivern. Realment en tots dos llibres ressonen les mateixes coses, viatges per Europa, música, pintura, literatura. Aquest és un recull de contes variat, amb connexions subtils entre històries i, com sempre passa, amb relats més estimulants que d'altres. Però ha estat una lectura super agradable.

Ta książka, jak to chyba cała proza Cabre, jest wybitna. Opowiadania to maestria kompozycji, a także to, co kochamy w Cabre najbardziej - łączenie miłości do literatury i muzyki. Mistrz z jednej strony bawi się z czytelnikiem, wodzi za nos i każe szukać połączeń między tekstami, a z drugiej jego opowiadania (które podobno sam określa mianem "pozornej przeciętności") opowiadają niby zwykłe, codzienne, zrozumiałe historie.

Oprócz jednego opowiadania, które mi nie podeszło (aczkolwiek to nie kwestia tego, że jest źle napisane, tylko bardziej mojej głębokiej antypatii do akurat takiego stylu) wszystkie opowiadania po paru dniach od ich lektury pamiętam, jestem w stanie je streścić, i prawdopodobnie będę się do nich wielokrotnie odwoływać, i wielokrotnie o nich myśleć. W tekstach tych nie ma zbędnych słów, nie ma nieprawdopodobnych zachowań, nie ma niejasności - jest proza najwyższej klasy, w punkt ujęte przeżycia, uczucia, myśli; sądzę, że spokojnie na temat każdego z tych opowiadań można by napisać osobny doktorat.

Jeśli jeszcze nie znacie tego pisarza, sięgnijcie po jego twórczość - "Podróż zimowa" może być do niej bardzo dobrym wstępem, a na pewno czymś, czego nie uświadczycie u żadnego innego autora.

Obok Cabre stawiam jeszcze Barnesa, a nad nimi już tylko Bułhakowa. Niech to będzie wystarczającym powodem, by sięgnąć po któreś dzieło katalońskiego mistrza. Polecam.

Tot i la tècnica i que alguns (com "Dos minuts", "Pols" o "Pac!") són molt i molt bons, altres dels contes d'aquest recull em deixen una mica fred, sovint per resultar-me una mica pedants, especialment pel que fa a les qüestions musicals. Però val la pena llegir el volum pels bons moments que té i per gaudir de com Cabré fa servir la nostra llengua.

Quelques nouvelles extraordinaires, quelques unes qui laissent le lecteur perplexe ;

La plus grande faiblesse du recueil pour moi est, étrangement, dans les liens qui sont tissés entre chacune des nouvelles - très disparates tant dans le ton que dans les événements ou même l'époque où elles se situent -, liens qui sont dans la plupart des cas très ténus, voire qu'on sent forcés.

Il reste que certaines des nouvelles qui composent 'Voyage d'hiver' tiennent du prodige, notamment 'Opus Posthume' et 'Le rêve de Gottfreid Heinrich'. Rien que pour celles-là, le bouquin vaut la peine d'être lu.

Książkę pożyczyła mi kumpela, mówiąc o niej, że to najlepszy sposób na początek znajomości z Cabré. Zgadzam się z nią. Choć nie znam pozostałej twórczości autora, „Podróż zimowa” z pewnością zachęca do jej poznania, mimo że zawarte tu opowiadania, jak dla mnie przynajmniej, nie są ani szczególnie porywające, ani językowo piękne, a niekiedy przebijała przez nie dość prostolinijna naiwność, której można by się spodziewać u debiutanta. I ja tak właśnie zamierzam potraktować ten zbiór opowiadań, jak debiut, który daje nadzieję na lepsze czytanie w przyszłości.

Жауме Кабре — известный каталонский писатель, автор романа-бестселлера «Я исповедуюсь» (я не читала).
Сборник рассказов объединён общей меланхоличной атмосферой и тихим зимним настроением. Хотя обычно я редко читаю короткие рассказы (и они не слишком-то остаются в памяти), этот сборник понравился. Возможно, дело в авторском стиле: Кабре создаёт истории, которые хочется читать медленно, неторопливо погружаясь в описанную атмосферу. Некоторые сюжеты оставляют после себя лёгкую грусть и ощущение чего-то недосказанного (история о библиотеке особенно). Вполне достойно внимания.

Belli questi racconti di Cabré. E bello il filo sottile che lega molte di queste storie, un filo fatto di piccoli dettagli che superano il tempo e lo spazio, regalando qualcosa in più a ciascun racconto. Una menzione a parte meritano “Polvere”, la storia più bella, quella con dentro tutto l’incanto della grande letteratura. E “Winterreise”, il racconto che chiude il libro raccordandosi alla prima storia del libro.

El recordava així, amb una prosa senzilla i sincera, però vagament, de la manera que recordes un llibre quan te l'has llegit fa temps. I el millor que pot passar en aquests casos (quan et pica la curiositat una altra vegada i dius ei va, som-hi) és que no només no et decebi, sinó que superi amb escreix les expectatives que hi tenies. Alors, il comprit que c’était sans espoir, qu’il serait incapable de quitter Vienne, que la vie n’est pas le chemin, pas même la destination, seulement le voyage, et quand nous disparaissons c’est toujours à la moitié du trajet, quel que soit le lieu. Pour son malheur, ce qui lui était échu, c’était un très dur voyage d’hiver, qui avait laissé son âme entièrement dévastée.

Elles ont été écrites dans un esthétisme musical impressionnant. Schubert est d'ailleurs le point de pivot de tous ces récits, solitaires mais oniriques.

This collection of short stories from Jaume Cabre is his first to be translated into English. Cabre is a Catalan author, teacher, and philologist. What is a philologist? Hopefully I’m not the only clueless one out there! A philologist is someone who studies the historical development of languages and literature. This aptitude for linguistics is especially apparent in Winter Journey in the way Cabre expresses dialogue, illustrates a character's inner thoughts, and describes influential details in different scenes.

The short stories vary a great deal, but a common thread in many is music, both composition and performance. Many of the characters deal with problems that occur in their lives in the most unpredictable ways. Cabre reveals his characters, even the most flawed ones, with a thread of humor and care. It is as if he is acknowledging that they are flawed but that they still have value.

My favorite was “With Hope in His Hands”, about a father enduring a long-term prison sentence with no word from his only child. He spends his days agonizing over why she hasn’t written him a letter in all the time he’s been incarcerated. He wonders if she’s ashamed of him, how her health is, and even if she’s still alive. His worry leads him to plot an escape plan, with the sole intention of seeing her again, just once. Despite various setbacks, he keeps planning, and finally, the moment arrives for him to escape. But just as dramatically, he is given the answer to all his questions, and he chooses to remain in prison. It’s not despair but joy that makes him stay. The way the story unfolds, with flashbacks as well as details of the prison, feels incredibly real.


Another is “Dust”, about a young woman hired to clean the spectacularly huge library of an aging book collector. She spends her days in the various genres, sometimes in ORIENTAL POETRY, other times caring for TRAVEL BOOKS, EUROPE. She imagines the value that all of the books must have, and assigns a similar awe-struck value to their collector. After some time in his employ, she questions him about the books and how important they must be. His response is that “I’m searching for wisdom…Because wisdom is shy and it likes to throw up smokescreens so people will leave it in peace. I pursue the unknown wisdom that always hides […:] In apparent mediocrity.” He then, to her shock, explains to her that his collection is pretty much the worst of the worst: terrible poetry and hideous novels. The twist is there and it packs a punch, but Cabre pursues it even further, revealing the reason why the collector keeps the vast works at hand.

Each of the short stories features some sort of distortion of expectation in one way or another, but they never get gimmicky. Towards the end of the collection, a story called “Winterreise” re-introduces us to two characters from the very first story. Cabre doesn’t just deepen the previous storyline, but he takes it into a new direction with unexpected details that weren’t evident before. It changes everything, and creates an entirely new storyline that is painful, ironic, and a tiny bit funny.

Przeoczyłam informację na okładce, że są to opowiadania. Zabrałam się do czytania sądząc, że mam przed sobą powieść. Okazało się, że jest to powieść złożona z opowiadań. Pomysł dla mnie nowy, gdyż wcześniej nie czytałam nic w takiej formie. Zasadniczo nie czytam opowiadań, gdyż uważam, że jest to zbyt krótka forma dla rozwijania wielu wątków, co najbardziej lubię w literaturze, dlatego zdecydowanie wolę powieści. Wyjątek stanowią opowiadania G. G. Marqueza. W tym zbiorze również tematyka nie jest taka jaką zazwyczaj się zaczytuję. Mamy tu do czynienia z opowiadaniami kryminalnymi, a ja od kryminałów raczej trzymam się z daleka.
Książka nie zostanie moją ulubioną, choć niewątpliwie przeczytałam ją z ciekawością i na pewno wrócę do twórczości Autora, którego inne pozycje mam na czytniku, bądź na półce. Duże uznanie dla tłumaczki za mistrzowskie przełożenie na język polski nie tylko treści, ale i niezapomnianego hiszpańskiego klimatu i sprawienie, że Polka, która nigdy nie była w Hiszpanii, a tym bardziej w Katalonii, czuła się tam jak u siebie.

M’encanta com escriu i com teixeix les històries Jaume Cabré. Malgrat això, el llibre m’ha semblat una miqueta desigual i té alguns alts i baixos. El recull de contes, lleugerament lligats els uns amb els altres, a vegades de manera molt òbvia i a vegades de manera que cal esforçar-se per trobar el lligam, requereixen una lectura atenta per poder gaudir de totes les connexions i és important tenir això al cap des del començament per no haver de rellegir els primers contes si quan arribem a la meitat ens adonem que no hem fruït tot el que es podia, que és el que m’ha passat a mi. També podria ajudar que els contes estiguessin presentats cronològicament, tot i que no formen una història en el seu conjunt, però suposo que l’autor s’ha estimat més l’ordre en el qual ens els ha presentat, que funciona una miqueta com un trencaclosques. En resum, una lectura molt recomanable, però en la qual cal tenir en compte que no és un recull de contes totalment independents i que per tant és millor llegir el llibre amb la constància i la continuïtat amb la qual llegiríem una novel·la.

Sono quindici racconti, quindici perle. Ognuno di loro varrebbe un romanzo a sé. Ma - come dice l'autore - "lo spazio limitato di un racconto obbliga lo scrittore a elidere, a dare per scontate molte vite anteriori, a riassumere in un tratto un'intera descrizione morale o fisica... e allora lo scrittore deve aguzzare l'ingegno, ma anche il lettore deve farlo."
E in questa raccolta aguzzare l'ingegno è un compito faticoso (perché Cabré, se lo vuoi capire per intero, non è uno scrittore facile) ma terribilmente stimolante.
C'è tanta musica, c'è un misterioso quadro di Rembrandt, c'è una biblioteca polverosa e fantastica... ma tanto tanto altro. E c'è la necessità di rileggerlo questo libro, una volta finito, per cogliere gli infiniti collegamenti tra un racconto e l'altro.
Innamorata di Cabré dopo aver letto il suo bellissimo "Io confesso" (e innamorata della Catalogna da sempre), mi fa davvero arrabbiare che sia così poco conosciuto in Italia.

Caubré me parece um desse autores para quem a crueldade é uma forma de vanguarda. O que não seria um problema, necessariamente, se seus contos de violência não se esgotassem na própria esperteza. Falta a eles um distanciamento, "irônico" ou "pós-moderno", que nos permita olhar tanto para a crueldade quanto para o próprio olhar, fascinado ou obsessivo, que olha a crueldade. Caubré tenta se esconder atrás do estilo realista, como se estivesse oferecendo "a verdade", como se a narração não fosse mediada, mas como escreveu Ian McEwan: "Não há reparação possível para Deus ou para os romancistas, nem mesmo para os romancistas ateus".

Em contos como "Yo recuerdo" ou "Balada", a violência extrema (histórica e real em ambos casos) parece mera justificativa para um exercício estilístico, o que coloca questões éticas agudas. Como observa W. G. Sebald no ensaio "Guerra Aérea e Literatura", a narração da violência nunca está separada de um certo voyeurismo, e um escrito que a Shoah ou a Guerra dos Bálcãs sem questionas as condições de possibilidade mesmas de sua narração... Para utilizar as palavras evocadas pelo narrador de "Finis coronat opus", Horresco referens: Estremeço ao contar... A voz narrativa, nesses casos, parece rejubilar-se com o sofrimento, por que é este que permite à máquina literária bem azeitada funcionar perfeitamente, com extremo domínio técnico e prenhe de efeitos... Mas desprovida de um sentido ético, filosófico, existencial, político ou o que seja.

Dertien jaar heb ik in Catalonië gewoond, maar dit is mijn kennismaking met het werk van Jaume Cabré. Daarom ook heb ik bewust gekozen voor deze verhalenbundel, en ik ben niet teleurgesteld.
Echte pareltjes zitten er tussen de verhalen, zoals bijvoorbeeld "Deux minutes" dat zich ontrolt als een stukje uit een film van Jacques Tati waarbij de camera zich in het straatbeeld van persoon naar persoon verplaatst en het verhaal zo telkens weer vanuit een ander standpunt verdergaat ... In andere verhalen gebruikt Jaume Cabré ook die techniek om het vertelstandpunt steeds weer van persoon naar persoon te verplaatsen. Andere verhalen krijgen dan weer een onverwachte "twist of the tail" aan het einde. Dat alles maakt dat je als lezer nooit weet waar je aan te verwachten bij het begin van een verhaal. En als kers op de taart zijn alle verhalen ook nog eens op een of andere manier verbonden met elkaar... één van die verbindingen bijvoorbeeld is muziek (Schubert, Bach...). Maar er zijn er meer, en uiteindelijk blijkt dat al die verhalen en "novelles" in feite één geheel vormen, een reis door een winterlandschap.

Spodziewałem się powieści, gdyż nieustannie gonię tego autora szukając powtórki z "Wyznaję". Żadnemu jednak dziełu nie udało się jednak nawet w stopniu minimalnym dogonić tego arcydzieła. Powiem więcej, czytane dotychczas inne powieści wieją raczej nudą, niż stwarzają w mojej głowie wielopiętrowy obraz jakim była tamta zachwycająca powieść.
Tutaj sądząc, iż czytam powieść pojawia się zaskoczenie, gdyż jest to w rzeczywistości zbiór opowiadań, jednak trudno się w tym początkowo zorientować, gdyż całość jest zmyślnie podzielona a niektóre opowiadania łączą się i przenikają. Cudownie było dopatrywać się tych przeniknięć i mimo, iż nie wszystkie ze zbioru podobały mi się po równo, to uważam że: "Kurz", "Testament" oraz "Winterrreise", to opowiadania, które poznać trzeba, gdyż znakomicie oddają magię tej pierwszej, czytanej przeze mnie powieści tego autora, która na zawsze utkwiła w mojej głowie i sercu.
