I hope most, or all have read The Provider 1. Whew, that was a ride. Get another ticket and hop back on. Will Bentley and his family sure have been through hardships, what with a resurrectionist, bluebellies, carpetbaggers and such. Those problems didn't just go away, and now the bluebellies are after Will because they have been convinced he is a murdering savage. Rufus and Will have rounded up enough cattle for a drive, to replace the ones that were stolen from them and get tha old cattleman, Charles Forrester to throw in with them. He gives them an envelope for his friend, Gus Marlin, suggestion Gus for the trail boss. That has to wait until they get to Ft. Worth, where they need a couple more cowboys and a cook. Maggie and Rose insist on going along. Maggie is an excellent wrangler and Rose a very good shot, so Will had no argument. Pretty rag tag group that heads to Ft. Worth. Gus has already signed to trail boss a different drive, but agreed to help Will along the way, if he and his crew would follow. For a cook, Will hired Mom. You will love Mom. For cowboys, he got Lane and Kip. Lane is as seasoned as they come and Kip is 10 yrs old. A lot of Will in Kip. This trip is fraught with outlaws, Indians, bluebellies and natural disasters, not the least of which is crossing the raging Red River. Excitement throughout the entire book!

John Deacon is a very good story teller. His The Provider books are filled with interesting characters with well developed personalities that contribute to the richness of the tale and their stories are highly entertaining and just plain "thrilling". The protagonist Will is a Confederate cavalry veteran trying to rebuild his life and "to provide" for his growing family is post-war east Texas, a land filled with renegades, scalawags, carpet-baggers and just plain folks trying to survive the aftermath of our great national tragedy. In volume 2, Will is putting together a small cattle drive up to Abilene, Kansas to ensure the survival of his still small band of family and friends. They are being tried by vindictive antagonists coming from all directions. Although you know there are four volumes planned for this series, the reader assumes the characters will survive. But the story of whether and most importantly HOW, makes this a delightful book.

This second book in the series of John Deacon’s “The Provider” is even better than the first book! A masterful job of providing the history of reconstruction in Texas. Bring a proud Texan myself, I especially like this story of a Confederate soldier home from the war who is determined to provide for his family torn apart from the Civil War. Looking forward to the next book in the series and so glad John’s going to continue the series. Great read! John’s Western novels keep getting better and better!!!

Provides a damn fine read

Provider 1 and, now, 2 take up the reins just when I was bereft of the post-Civil War, pre-High Noon, cowboy/ranching action, ‘provided’ by Lobo the wolf warrior. With echoes of great movie “Cold Mointain”, The Provider is a great read with super action that comes at you without the gore and gruesome detail of, say, Bone Tomahawk or any film by Tarantino, which has its place but not here. Approaches the feel of the novel ‘Dances with Wolves’ and there’s not many higher accolades.

Great authors tell great stories

I've said elsewhere that Westerns are not my first choice of genre; but for John Deacon I'll make an exception. I'm now on my third series, and I'm reading mostly non-stop through them. These are great tales of the west with manly men and beautiful but still tough women. The good guys win, the bad guys die - the way you wish it could be in real life.

Loved this!

Loved Provider 2 and can’t wait for the 3rd. Riding for the brand. Loyalty. Action to keep you interested until the very end, hard to put down. Kip, Lane, Maggie, Rose, Farley, Mom, Grover, Clyde, and of course Will. A shame they aren’t real because I’d love to meet them all! These books are just the style of writing I like, clean, wholesome, western action. Keep the books coming!

book 2 thrilling cattle drivel life depiction

There was an old movie Red River John Wayne. I watched it during reading book 2. Red River. It brought my imagination of what happened to life. Deacon’s description of the currents and rapids and life as a cattleman was unique, esp when it involved two women. I love how the characters enter-twine and some characters wrap over to next series. I have read multiple series by john deacon. Cant wait for provider book 3.

I have really enjoyed this series and am part way through the 3rd in the series. Well written, easy to read and for me educational. Learning about the challenges of cattle drives, about find “wild” cattle in the thicket, and that the whole fast draw of pistols and use of holsters cane about after the civil war.
John Deacon does a good job weaving believable stories. I have also read and enjoyed some of his Lobo, Heck and the Justice series.

Ridin' for The Brand!

I'm all in and excited for the next book. The Provider and all his crew are my kind of people. Well written and very satisfying read. I recommend this and all books by this author. Love Kip and amused by Grover. I'm 76 years old but will gladly "ride for the brand".

Great series

Good flow of action. Enjoyed the theme of a man and his family working to make a better life for themselves and those who were associated with them.
Good things happen for those who work hard even though there is a smattering of bad thrown to spice up the mix.
Great series, looking forward to more by Mr. Deacon.

Great Classic Western

This novel is a continuation of the previous Provider 1 Western. They are well written, and exciting novels. With a lot of action and romance. The plots follow the pattern of the post Civil War era, with the constant fighting and turmoil in the great state of Texas. I highly recommend these novels and will be reading more by John Deacon.

Easy to read

I really enjoyed these two Provider Sagas. They told an interesting story in a way that was intriguing and kept me reading to see what happens. It is not unnecessarily gory and tedious with gun fights, but still had a good plot and the author told it well. I think everyone would like this Saga and I.am looking forward to the next in this series.

Quite a ride!

I thoroughly enjoy westerns, and this series is one of the best. There is a lot going on in the world that defies common sense, and it was a pleasure to read about strong men and women coming together and working hard to achieve goals honestly and diligently. I look forward to the next part of the journey.

Another Wonderful Story

I love this series and am glad I found it. Will be reading his other books also. He tells the story of how things were after the Civil War. About strong people who were willing to work to make things good again. A time when a man stood behind his word. On to the third book.

Brilliant

Brilliant story as usual.felt as if i was actually on the cattle drive. Felt the chill of the rain storms the heat of the blazing sun . The thrill at the close of the story keeping Grover had a wee tear in my eyes .and I'm always being told that rough tough Scottish construction workers don't cry .lol

steer Clearer Than ever!

This second book in the Provider series delivered and then some. I am a woman who reads gritty westerns. I also work for my brand as a marketer of western books. These books are at the top of my favorites. Recommended for women and men who like a dusty story with love mingled in. Never gonna forget this series. Ride on cowboys!

Just when you think John Deacon has peaked

Man, I love these characters. John Deacon puts some love into these characters and enough action and suspense into the story to make his works some of the best.

One of his many good books!

Will the Blue Bellies ever leave Will Bentley alone—hopefully. At least the last of the Teal Gang is gone. Thank goodness Grover, the mellow long-horned steer was spared. Look forward to book three!

PROVIDER PROVIDES A GOOD STORY

I follow John Deacon because he always offers a well researched, entertaining western story. This is one of his best. It enables understanding of how the early cattle drives up from Texas were hard and dangerous.
