Madelyn Erickson does not like cowboys. When a mysterious box from her estranged father is presented, Maddie finds herself thrown into the charming mountain town of Sterling Ridge, Wyoming. With a new home, a new job, and new insights into the cowboy that left her all those years ago, she’s starting to wonder if she can join this close-knit community after all. But the community isn't interested. Not until rancher Greyson James makes her an offer of his own. Fake dates to be seen around town with a local boy, because Sterling Ridge loves nothing more than a good rumor mill.Easy, right? Set ground rules and a time frame, don’t fall for the handsome man making the offer because after all, he's a cowboy. But Grey is more than he seems and soon the difference between faking it and reality blur. So, what happens when the cowboy rides away? Because they always do. Maddie would know, her father chose the rodeo life over her twenty-eight years ago.Grey only made the offer to be nice. To give Maddie a hand like the Hayes Ranch family did for him all those years ago. But between battling his social anxiety and his growing feelings for Maddie, the plan becomes complicated. Can he convince her to drop the arrangement, stay in town, and give him a real shot?
This book was the follow-up to Light on Love which I read earlier this year.
What I enjoyed about this book was the Anxiety representation and how easy it was to read. I did find though that I was reading more for the Virgin River-esque vibes versus the actual plot.
While I was somewhat invested in Grey and Maddie’s story, I found that a lot of the plot pivoted around the secondary narratives of their upbringings which weren’t given much resolution.
I personally preferred the first book in this series as I found the plot and characters more interesting. I’d be interested in checking out the rest of this series as it’s released, but don’t see myself picking this up again.
Maddie moves to small town Wisconsin when she inherits an apartment from her estranged & recently deceased father. She picks up a job at the local vet clinic.
When the clinic owner meddles between Grey & Maddie, Grey offers to show Maddie around town on fake dates.
There are rules & a timeframe. But when feelings begin, their plan gets complicated.

I absolutely loved Grey & Maddie!
I’m such a sucker small town setting where everyone knows everyone. And I loved the little glimpses we got into the different people in town, and also the insight this gave for Grey’s backstory.
The mix of tropes was just so good! Like look at those. Fake dating + small town + he falls first + no third act breakup! YES PLEASE!
The side characters! I love love love that we got to reconnect with the main characters from Light On Love and had more time on Hayes Ranch with Grey playing a main role on the ranch!
And just a number of little things + things that spoilers!
Highly recommend you read Light On Love prior to this one though, just for more insight into characters!
PUB day: April 16th!
📍Wyoming ✨Rep: social anxiety ‼️Content: death of a parent, recent past; parental abandonment; grief
“It is starting to feel impossible to keep any distance from him, like a moth to a flame. And she is caring less and less about the inevitable burn.”
😮💨😮💨 C.A. Steinhaus is honing in on her craft in book 2 of Sterling Ridge. I loved Grey & Maddie’s story SO much! The tension, the flirting, the banter - all A+. I am always a sucker for a fake dating trope. I love when the lines start to blur and the characters start to question, is this real? And New in Town delivered. 4.5 ⭐️!
Sterling Ridge Series 1. Light on Love: Laurel & Brett 2. New in Town: Maddie & Grey 💙 3. TBA!
I read Light on Love earlier this year and it's been one of my favorite reads of 2024. New in Town is the second book of the Sterling Ridge series. You know the feeling of loving the first book in a series so much that you feel nervous about reading the following books? That is exactly how I felt because I have a lot of fondness for Laurel & Brett, but I am very happy to report that New in Town is just as memorable and swoon worthy as its predecessor.
MAIN CHARACTERS
Grey: Grey was a side character in Light on Love and we get the honor of seeing him with a closer lens in New in Town. He's the point man on the Hayes Ranch and goes on a test run to become the new team lead. Grey had a tough upbringing and deals with bouts of anxiety and panic attacks. As someone that deals with anxiety, it truly warmed my heart being able to relate to that.
Maddie: We first meet Maddie in Denver working as an emergency vet. Working in the emergency room wasn't actually her calling, she wanted to work in a small practice with domestic and livestock but they're hard to come by in her city.
Her mom gives her a box gifted from her estranged father that recently passed away. The box contains keys to an apartment, photos, and letters written to her. She uproots her life to visit Sterling Ridge, Wyoming and when she scores a job at the local vet's office, she decides to move there. Her mother drills it into her head that cowboys are not worth the trouble and to steer clear from falling in love with one.
The small town is charming however the townspeople are hesitant to fully accept newcomers that move there. People that visited the vet's office preferred to wait to see the other vet, Arlo, instead of letting Maddie take care of their pets. Her first patient is Grey's new puppy, a blue heeler named Pippa, and this is where the spark between Grey and Maddie begins.
People needed to see Maddie as part of the community and Grey happily took it upon himself to be the one to show her around. They enter a fake dating agreement with a 2 month timeline.
This book is perfect for those of you that LOVE:
✨ Fake dating ✨ Slow burn ✨ Cowboys ✨ Small town ✨ Dog dad ✨ Motorcycle rides ✨ Horseback rides ✨ Handwritten letters ✨ Found family
I hope you all love this book as much as I did. My heart smiled so many times throughout the book as their love story unfolded and as mysteries were solved. 🥹 I also loved the cameos of Laurel & Brett as well as the other characters from the first book.
A million thank you's to the author for giving me the opportunity to read New in Town as an ARC.
Looking for a book set in a small town, with a swoony cinnamon roll man who is a cowboy but also rides a motorcycle? There is fake dating, mental health rep of anxiety and panic attacks (MMC) and no 3rd act breakup!
I fell in love with sterling ridge in light on love which is Brett and laurels story (you get to see them in this book as well). We met Grey in that book he is the ranch lead. Grey is quiet and keeps to himself but when the new vet in town is having trouble getting clients Grey sets out to help her by “fake dating” her. Maddie was left an apartment from her dad who she never really met. When the veterinarian in town offers her a partner position but she has to meet 30% of clients she thinks that will no problem…except it’s a small town and people don’t love change. When the good looking cowboy offers to help her Maddie makes a list of conditions that their situation can only last 2 months because Maddie’s mom has drilled it into her head to never date a cowboy.
I loved Grey from the minute we meet him! I mean he’s a cowboy, rides a motorcycle and is a cinnamon roll who reads…what’s not to like? Grey even though he has anxiety and panic attacks is willing to step out of his comfort zone to help Maddie. I love how Maddie and Grey started to realize their feelings for each other. The way these two worked together was beautiful. Maddie was able to ease Grey in situations realize what he needed without saying anything. Grey is the book boyfriend! This man took himself out of his comfort zone to help someone and the result is beautiful.
Read this is if you love a sweet romance that has some spice to it and a HEA.
Thank you to CA Steinhaus for the arc of this book.
TW⚠️: panic attacks, death of parent, abandonment, animal injury, medical injury, physical fight, sexual content, narcissistic parent —— This gave me exactly what I needed after a spree of books less than 4 stars so this takes a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Small town x cowboy romance x fake dating x happy endings 🐎🏔️🤍 YEHAY because this book was SO CUTE!! 🤠 —— After Maddie receives a mysterious box from her estranged father after his death, she is taken to small country town Sterling Ridge, Wyoming. She’s the new mysterious girl in town and folks have a hard time welcoming her to their home. But here comes Grey, the handsome cowboy rancher of the town who offers to fake date Maddie as a way to get the town folk to open up! But, does he care cross the blurred agreement lines of their fake dating arrangement? 🩵 —— Small town vibes? MUAH!!! I had autumn night ranch ambiance playing at night while I was reading. The easiness of the story to read, pure contentment without dramatic changes in the love story, the sweetness and flirtatiousness from Grey, AND you’re surrounded by horses, cattle, dogs and all animals as Maddie is a vet? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I loved!!! This is such a cozy, sweet and warm story. 🥹
Definitely recommend please!! All cowboy lovers, small town lovers, animal lovers, and romance lovers need to read!
The beginning of New In Town felt a bit rushed but once I got to Maddie and Greys interactions I was so thankful for it. The author perfectly depicts the new dating excitement I remember having when my spouse and I first started dating! The pace is consistent and she sets such amazing scenes. The spice level was a bit light but the scenes she did include were extremely well done. I also enjoyed reading mental health depicted from a male character. And the last few chapters had me anxiously awaiting the outcome due to both Maddie and Greys inner monologues. C.A Steinhaus really knocked it out of the park with this one! • • •
Maddie and Grey's story feels like the perfect fake dating warm hug! This book will have you giggling and kicking your feet the entire time. It is not often that I can say that two main characters have such an instant connection but Maddie and Grey 100% zinged the first time they met. Maddie is new in town and is struggling to establish clients as the new veterinarian and Grey immediately agrees to fake date her to help her reputation. Grey is hands down one of the swooniest, cinnamon roll book boyfriends. He keeps to himself because of his social anxiety but Maddie instantly feels like home to him. The anxiety rep is so well done and Grey's emotions are so real. I did not want this book to end but once it was over, I immediately wanted to read it again.
Make sure to pick up New in Town if you love -Fake Dating -Small Town -Anxiety rep -Cowboy romances -Found family
This one is the second book in the series and about Grey and Maddie.
This book was so sweet Maddie comes to sterling Ridge following her fathers death who she never knew but he left her a house and letters to guide her in the new town.
Her mother has always warned her about cowboys and to stay away form them but when Maddie meets Grey there is nothing she can do to avoid him. He is sweet, quiet, and caring towards her and all her needs and honestly I don't know a single soul who wouldn't have fallen in love with Grey.
They were so cute together and I loved watching them both get over their fears and come together. Their wasn't any real climatic drama and normally that would bother me but I didn't mind it here I loved them and this was a super sweet book.
Grey and Maddie are so sweet! From their first meeting, to their agreement helping her get known around the town, you can just tell they are it for each other! The little things they do for each other, acknowledging the minor things is just pure perfection!
The way that they work together to overcome a crisis is straight chemistry! Grey is such a strong character with a heart of gold, and he complimented Maddie’s independence and they make such a good couple! Plus did I mention Grey also rides motorcycles? Hellllllllo cowboy! 😏
You will adore Grey and Maddie if you love 🐴 fake dating 🩺 nosy small towns 🐴 anxiety rep (him) 🩺 found family 🐴 cowboy hero
If you are looking for a group of cowboys to fall in love with, do not hesitate to read these, I promise you won’t be disappointed!
Madelyn Erickson has one rule and that’s “she doesn’t date cowboys” but once she meets Greyson James, she might have to be a rule breaker and save a horse 🤠
This was a fun read! I loved the characters and how their relationship progressed. What started out as “fake dating” turned into something so real. They communicate well and Greyson was just so sweet to Maddie. Maddie’s mother may had try to scare her away from cowboys but Greyson James proved that he’s in it all the way for her.
This comes out April 16, 2024 🤠🤎 adding this series to my cowboy recs for sure!
If I could move to Sterling Ridge, I would. I love this fictional small town and all of the characters in it. Maddie and Grey are my new favorite Sterling Ridge couple.
C.A. did an amazing job with Maddie and Grey. Their story felt so real and I was hooked from the first chapter. Their chemistry was unmatched. They communicate so well and support each other. Grey helps Maddie establish her place in town and Maggie helps Grey navigate his anxiety. It honestly just made my heart so happy.
I loved Grey right off the bat. He is the ultimate cinnamon roll MMC. He's a motorcycle riding cowboy who has anxiety and is obsessed with his girl. SIGN ME UP.
Sweet, sweet Grey. This man has a heart of GOLD and I just loved him!! The way he took care of Maddie and helped her out was the sweetest. And sweet Maddie…she really found herself when she came to Sterling Ridge and it was so beautiful to watch her find her own happiness. Loved this book!!
Some key moments:
- He brings her dinner to the clinic - He takes her to the fair - He takes her out to anywhere she wants to go - Did I mention our man Grey HATES going out in public… - He has a panic attack and she helps him through it - I love the way they confide in each other - He reads to her and holds her during a thunderstorm!!!! 😍 - The way they show up for each other even though they’re both afraid of being abandoned - They are the sweetest couple - But behind closed doors…whew!
This book was adorable!! I was able to get the arc for this book and it’s the second in the Sterling Ridge series. I liked the first one, but I loved this one! If you love city girl going to small town, fake dating, cowboys, and a FMC learning about her past and what brought her to Sterling Ridge then I highly recommend this one. Maddie and Grey are adorable together but their individual characters made the story so good. 4⭐️ 2🌶️
This was fine? Not a lot of angst or drama, they both communicated well with each other save for maybe a few moments of self doubt, minimal spice however the dirty talk and sex seemed out of place in this book? But tbf I didn’t read the first in the series so maybe it’s standard for this author. Overall a decent read.
This one was okay, I just didn’t really feel invested in the story. It was a very quick and easy read though, so could be good to get out of a slump! The spice just didn’t seem to match the vibe of the rest of the book to me and I think third person POV just isn’t for me.
This was such a sweet, lighthearted book. Grey and Maddie were so cute together and I loved how they just brought out the best in each other. This was a great small town, fake dating, cowboy romance 💕
4.5⭐ - i couldnt think that the second could be as good as the first, but i was wrong. I absolutely loved the story of Grey and Maddie. The story is much more steamy and i was so here for it. I can not wait to continue on with this series with Jules!
Things I loved: Sweetheart Letters Wildflowers Carnival He reads to her Motorcycle rides Anxiety representation Horseback rides
I loved this book it was such a quick read! It is the second book in the series but can be read as a stand alone. Maddie isn’t feeling her life in the city when she inherits her dad’s apartment in the small town of Sterling Ridge. The town is not very welcoming to her as the new veterinarian. Grey agrees to fake date her in hopes of her gaining more clients by being seen around town with a local. Grey was patient and thoughtful. Maddie was independent and trying to find a place where she felt at home. I loved seeing their interactions and the chemistry between them was great. I can’t wait for the next book in this series!
I absolutely loved Grey and Maddie. I was hooked from the first chapter. From their chemistry to their connection it was unmatched. This book will have you giggling and kicking your feet the entire time. Grey is a swoony cinnamon roll man who is a cowboy but also rides a motorcycle. The way that these two worked together was so beautiful. I loved the little glimpses we got to see into different people from the town. I did not want this book to end.
