Updated review: I read through this books second edition to help prepare it for publication and OH WOW. K.F.’s writing is absolutely incredible. They are for sure my favorite author. I cannot describe to you how well written this book is. You’ll have to see for yourself. The characters are amazing. The story is dark and horrifying and it really keeps you on your toes the whole time. From the beta version to this I cannot believe how good it is. Oh wow. This book deserves to be known.

First read through review: I had the honor of beta reading this book in its early stages and when I tell you It could have been a published book even then, I’m not exaggerating. This steampunk fantasy follows Kit and Finn in a dual POV that will have your pulse racing. It’s the perfect combination of dark, twisty and fantastical, with characters ranging from goblins to dark elves and honestly everything between. Also, I genuinely loved both POVs. Each character has their own voice and it was so easy to get lost in their inner monologues and forget I was even reading. I cannot wait for the world of fantasy readers to get ahold of this book.

I received an e-arc for an honest review.

Overall, I found the story and its characters rather interesting. There were some great witty and sarcastic moments that had me grinning like the mad hatter. But it also had it's slow moments in which I felt like there was too much internal monologuing and description going on. And that could come down to personal preference as well.

At the end of the day, I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a fun new twist on fantasy!

Let me in. You must let me in.

I beta read for this novel earlier this year. And seeing it in it's almost final form as an ARC was an experience.

What Johnson has done is create a world in which two characters find each other. They couldn't be more different at first glance but there is tenacity in both that draws them together in the depths of the hellish underground city.

The dark elves are both fascinating and disturbing to read about. Their pet spiders will have your skin crawling. Not to mention the terrifying plan of the chief and what he plans to use in his conquest of the world above.

The side characters in this shine just as much as Kit and Finn. Braan and Gryvach don't steal the show but you feel for them just a much as you do for Kit and Finn.

The romance is a SLOOOOWWW burn. It is a soft falling, a gentle lead in to acquaintances, friends and then something more.

A book about inner demons, struggle and triumph, RoSaD is a fast paced, plot driven novel with the heart of these characters stuffed inside until it bursts open. This debut novel is only the start and I cannot wait to see what Johnson comes up with next!

You cannot tame me. You cannot hold me.

I absolutely adored this book and was thrilled to have the chance to be an ARC reader!! This book has characters that are easy to love, have some cool growth and really gives some great DnD vibes. And that ending? UGH. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!

Finn is so charming and I loved following his POV the most I think. Kit is fun to watch grow into the person they are at the end. Truly the characters felt very well thought out and not just random names on paper just to move a plot. This doesn’t feel like a debut book because of how well written it was. Great job!

I was able to get an ARC of this and I'm so happy I did. This gave me some LOTR mixed with D&D vibes through a steam punk lens. Unique, daring and captivating. The characters are loveable but flawed so you'll want to punch them one minute and keep them safe from the world the next. Definitely a must read and can't wait for the sequel!

I read this book as an ARC copy after seeing K.F. Starfell's TikToks about the book and their requests for ARC readers. Full transparency, I have been following the author's TikToks for some time where they talk about their characters so I knew more going in to this book than I typically do. That being said, these are my honest thoughts and review of the book Realm of Shadows and Demons.

Oh my gosh this book is so, so good! I believe this is the author's first publication, but it doesn't feel like it. It's well polished, the prose is wonderful, and it's clear they didn't just stream-of-conscious this book into existence. While we didn't get a great deal of world-building in this first installment (it's quite contained to a single setting), hints of a larger world make me very excited to read the rest of the series. A fantasy setting with more than just elves and dwarves? Sign me up!

The two leads, Kit and Finn, are incredibly compelling POVs to read from as they both have unique views of the world - yet are more similar than they both might realize. Intrigue, danger, and trauma is interspersed with great moments of levity and true compassionate happiness that adds to the dark themes of this book rather than distracting, deepening your attachment to the characters. I really do root for both these characters on their own merits rather than just for the plot-driven reasons we root for main characters for. The story is quite heavily character-driven in this first installment, and having characters that have more going on than the plot in front of them makes the story really sing.

The witty, sarcastic thief raised in the city and the clever tinkerer raised on an idyllic farm is a wonderfully classic pairing of companions that puts a twist on the the ray of sunshine being someone completely ignorant of the world who needs to be led by the hand - Kit most definitely can handle herself. The addition of a few more characters to their crew truly made some moments feel very much like a session of D&D in the BEST possible way. I will say, that remaining in only two character's heads in first person POV does limit my ability to really get a sense for who the other characters and villains are beyond the surface-level judgements based on the POV character's limited interactions with them - some chapters from more POVs in future installments I think would really help with that. Of course, that is a critique I have for most first-person POV stories, so maybe it's just me and my POV preferences getting in the way.

The plot was contained and direct: we have a singular goal and that's what we're angling every action into doing, but there were enough things going on around the main plot to show how much bigger this story is than what our main characters are focusing on at the moment which makes the seemingly straightforward plot have much more world-building weight than at first glance.

The dark themes aren't TOO dark (at least not yet), so I was able to settle into a fantasy world that was a bit heavier than average without feeling like the darkness was overbearing or was only there to shock and traumatize the reader. Of course, that is subjective to the reader, so I do suggest looking over the trigger warnings K.F. Starfell gives at the front of the book to see if it's something you'll be comfortable reading.

The only critique I have is that I do wish the story was a bit longer so we could flesh out a few more of the characters that don't get their own POV chapters and get us more invested in the relationships between our little crew so that there's a bigger sense of concern about one possibly not making it through the story - since with it's darker tone, that's a real possibility on the table. With a bit more connection between characters, I think I would have bumped this up to a 5 star.

So if you're looking for a fantasy story but you're tired of simply following the same fantasy creatures (who of course are royalty), you're looking for some darker tones with creepy crawlies about, and a bit of horror and intrigue, this is the book for you! I will ABSOLUTELY be re-reading it and am looking forward to the next installment in the series - it's truly a story that is worth your time to get invested in.

Solid 4.5 - super close to 5 stars for me!

Mostly Strengths with tad bit constructive criticism for some:

* the prose / writing style was refreshing! I loved the language used and this book was well written.
* Slow burn was well written, while I’m impatient, I think the romance was super natural and realistic - which again fucking refreshing!!
* FMC is cute, eccentric and resourceful. She’s strong and I love that’s a tinker. I love that she was given a logical mind. Women are often written as more creative and artistic rather than having logical and engineering abilities. And while we are seeing some more logical engineering type women appearing in media, Kit is both creative and logical with her tinker ability. SOLID heroine imo. And I think a great role model for younger readers - nothing below 16/17 imo. But that’s due to it being a dark fantasy.
* MMC is so cute, and I love the conflict built within him. I also love that he’s technically a criminal and the FMC was not — the conflict there and opposite ideals made for great character development.
* Speaking of character development, we do see a character arc for both point of view characters, however, it’s not major but enough to be noticeable and important to the story.
* Dark but not too dark
* I love the witty and Sarcasm nature that we see from some of the characters
* The side characters feel like main characters without taking over the narrative.
* Each character represented has their own personality. And this book is dual point of view, and I actually loved seeing The different interpretations of the characters between the two main POV.
* The plot: once common goal and that is the focus of the book.
* For the most part the world building is lacking but they are in one enclosed setting for the majority of the books so I understand that perspective. We do have a great sense of how these dark elves live and their home — I do wish I got a little more insight about the world outside. Maybe the main character is reminiscing about things like that. I think that would’ve just kicked an already wonderful book a notch :)
* Pacing was fairly solid, a few slower areas but still paced decently and was enjoyable throughout the entirety of the book.
I absolutely look forward to book 2! And surprise this is a debut novel. Can’t wait to see where this author goes!

I was generously given ARC for an honest review

The portrayal of the goblins in this book is very antisemitic and I struggled to get past it. I even ran it by some Jewish friends because I wanted to know if it was just me who thought this and they agreed. The main goblin in it is said to be good because he "isn't like the other goblins" he doesnt horde wealth and looks more sophisticated than them. Overall it was just a problem.
The main character also and love interest didn't spend enough time together for you to really feel their relationship grow.
The writing was pretty good and the story had some really interesting elements with the dark elves and their politics but overall I couldn't get past the antisemitism and lack of chemistry.

I follow the author on TikTok and was able to get an ARC. So going into this book I knew a bit about the characters and adventures they would be going on.
I loved the details of the characters, and how well their stories seemed to be flushed out. Finn is a charming thief, and Kit is an amazing creator. The side characters were so sweet and added their own personality, that I couldn't help but love the little ragtag group and wish desperately that they would succeed.
If you're looking for an adventure fantasy, with a tiny glimpse at slow burn romance, and kick ass heroines this is the book for you.

Dungeons and Dragons is rich with this one

If you're a fan of ttrpgs, this will get you through while you're waiting for your group to decide on a date that you all have free in order to play together. The characters all fit the vibe, I had no problem with any of the content material. While there's trigger warnings, there's nothing that's too extremely detailed. The pacing is good, and the character build-up is well done. I hope to see a follow-up, as I'd really like to see what adventures lay ahead.

I waited so long for this book anf it did not disappoint!

I've been following K E Johnson since they first joined tiktok and I fell in love with the story they were working on. Feom start to finish this book made me want to keep reading. Finn and Kits personalities are so opposite they just work. Loved it and can't wait for the sequel

I had the privilege of reading Realm of Shadows and Demons (Wyverealm Chronicles #1) by K.E. Johnson as an arc and let me just say WOW! I was thoroughly impressed and enjoyed the book very much.

The book is focused on two main characters through this first installment with a few minor players coming into play. We meet Kit first a tinkerer as she is taken by the dark elves back to their home as a slave. Once there she meets her cell mate Finn a thief who has been a slave to the dark elves for years. The two have a rather strained and untrusting relationship at first but eventually decided to help each other, with the common goal of escaping. Though we didn’t get deep into character development or see much setting other then them trying to escape we got some information on or species and and people that will mostly likely be key players later on.

The book itself does not provide much into background into the side characters , almost everything is unknown. But you get this sense of kinship from Kit and Finn they are both similar somehow and I can’t wait to see how that plays out in the upcoming books.

The book is the perfect amount of fantastical, dark and twisty without over doing it. It’s going to be a great adventure and I truly am so impressed with this read. I will say the only thing I would complain about is I wish it was a bit longer so we could have gotten more details and background. Overall it was great and I know people will love it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. So the characters are consistent and rather enjoyable. I don't typically like main characters but mine have to be Finn and the goblin dude. The ending was rather frustrating in a good way. Will definitely continue reading this series.
