De verhalen die Ivan Toergenjev schreef voor zijn bundel Notities van een jager (ook wel Jagersverhalen) maakten hem op slag beroemd. In die korte schetsen komt een rondtrekkende verteller, meestal op jacht, mensen tegen wier verhaal hij optekent. Behalve een prachtige verbeelding van het negentiende-eeuwse Russische landleven was dit de eerste keer dat een schrijver de lijfeigenschap aan de kaak durfde te stellen.
In handen van vertaler Froukje Slofstra krijgen de verhalen van Toergenjev het Nederlands dat ze verdienen. Net als eerder bij zijn verzamelde romans doet zij recht aan zijn zachtaardige en kalme stijl. Behalve Notities van een jager bevat deze uitgave, onder veel meer, de verhalen Moemoe, Eerste liefde, en Lentebeken.

These works offer realistic, affectionate portrayals of the Russian peasantry and penetrating studies of the Russian intelligentsia who were attempting to move the country into a new age. His masterpiece, Fathers and Sons, is considered one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century.
Turgenev was a contemporary with Fyodor Dostoevsky and Leo Tolstoy. While these wrote about church and religion, Turgenev was more concerned with the movement toward social reform in Russia.

Wat een mooie vertaling van de mijns inziens beste schrijver van negentiende eeuws Rusland. De Jagersverhalen, met een soort verstilde acceptatie van zaken die toch niet in orde zijn, zoals de lijfeigenschap. Topstuk uit deze bundel is Lentebeken, een van de mooiste verhalen uit de wereldlitteratuur.
