MR. DECEMBER Man: Robert Bruce McLachlan. Woman: Jennifer Burke, once his lover...later his wife. Marriage: Over, or so he thought.
He hadn't seen her for years, not since the beautiful, headstrong woman he'd married had left him. But now she was back, as compelling as ever, and he realized he'd never gotten her out of his blood. He also learned that they were still married.
There was something different now about Jennifer. His spoiled princess was gone, and in her place was a woman with a secret. He could sense the hidden pain she refused to share, and wondered if he could discover the truth...and rekindle a flame that had never died....
3. 5 stars rounded up. A sweet, if overwrought, reunion story of H/h who married too young and then split when the hero accepted an engineering job in the jungle of South America and 20 year-old heroine elected to stay behind. They never divorced in their nine year separation.
When the H/h meet again heroine is a psychologist working in a hospital helping parents with their sick children and the hero is a consultant for a new hospital building going up across the parking lot.
They meet again with hostility on both sides, although the hero softens before the heroine. There are lots of hints at the tragic backstory that changed the socialite heroine into a dedicated doctor.
In true vintage romance fashion, the heroine has never talked to anyone about her tragedy even though she's supposed to helping others with the same issues. This heroine also works 16 hours a day and is loved by all (if I worked that much, I would be hated by all because I would be beyond cranky)
The hero is a good guy who realizes he was wrong - same with the heroine. I liked how they were able to let go of the past and see each other in the now - changes and all - even before the big revelations. That's something rarely seen in a reconciliation story.
The prose if fairly purple, so be warned. My copy from Open Library also had some weird spacing issues and that was a problem since the prologue jumps around in time from present day to flashbacks. (Their meet cute in college was really sweet)
I think the H/h were both celibate during their separation -both of them talk about working all of the time - so who knows? Hero was in remote places for many years. Heroine was too messed up to date.
Good, but way too sad. Too much time apart, too many misunderstandings and interference from a third party, and something else I won't give away that just makes you want to cry.
