Social media is part of our lives, and it’s an increasingly popular place for witches of all kinds to meet and create new spells. On TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and more, witches set intentions, manifest their dream jobs, and even create virtual altars for their ancestors. Social Media Spellbook is a perfect way to take part in this trend by using social media to channel the power of the universe. Authors Amy Blackthorn and Natalie Zaman propose adaptable formulas that draw on symbolic imagery, astrology, tarot, herbs, and crystals—not to mention everyday desire—in a spell-a-day format that anyone, even a beginner witch, can use.
I found a couple to try out myself. I thought in general that half of these spells really don't even relate to the use of social media within the spell itself. You're essentially doing a physical spell and just posting it on social media?
Two brilliant authors came together to bring this awesome book into being.
I did not expect for the book to be in a 'spell a day' format and originally just read through it using little post it notes to mark spells I was interested in coming back to, until I got to the end of the book and realized there was a index in the back that sorted said spells by category. This was a good thing because I was putting a post-it note every few pages and had gone through a whole pad by the time I had noticed it. Oh well, the post-it notes shall stay anyway.
The book is organized well, and I appreciate the icon guide that lets you know in what way that specific spell shall utilize social media for results.
I admit I was skeptical of social media magic initially, but Amy and Natalie have presented a good way to dip our toes into the potential energy social media has to offer. The possibilities are exciting now!
Yet another book to keep on the little bookshelf I have on my desk, that is next to my computer no less!
Quick impressions: For libraries, public libraries that collect other witchcraft and esoteric materials may want to get this book. For academic libraries, this may be optional. I liked it, and as I said, I found things to try out, so I found some value. For others, it may depend on how active or not they are online and how much or not they want to bring their practice online or not.
(A full review will be posted on my blog shortly after this book is released on August 20, 2024).
