Barbie: The World Tour

Rate this book
For the press tour following the record-breaking release of Greta Gerwig’s award-winning, acclaimed Barbie movie, producer and star Margot Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal immersed themselves in some of Barbie’s most iconic outfits and curated vintage pieces, then approached designers, from Giorgio Armani to Donatella Versace, to create looks inspired by the doll-size originals. Many of these looks were not seen as the official Barbie press tour was cut short—so Margot and Andrew worked with renowned fashion photographer Craig McDean to shoot her in the looks exactly as they were curated: Schiaparelli in Los Angeles, Vivienne Westwood in London, vintage Chanel with matching Streamline luggage at the airport, and beyond.

Accompanying McDean’s sumptuous photography are original Barbie dolls from the period, a treasure trove of rare materials from Mattel’s Barbie fashion archives, and the designers’ sketches and Polaroids from fittings, layered into evocative collage by art director Fabien Baron. With text by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal, as well as handwritten contributions from the designers behind the looks (from Olivier Rousteing and Michelle Ochs to Manolo Blahnik and Jeremy Scott), this unique book blends the serious chic of high fashion with the serious fun of Barbie world—the dolls, the history, and the style that have captured imaginations for 65 years.

“It’s so amazing to see pink become this unifying and empowering color. Because to me, when people are wearing pink, whoever they are, they are embracing femininity. I love it.”

I got gifted this for my birthday, and it’s honestly such an amazing present. It’s a beautiful coffee table book. You can flip to any page and it looks so cool. I think this is a great pick-up if you’re a huge fan of the movie, especially if you’re interested in learning more about Margot’s Barbie-inspired looks during the press tour. Really happy to have this in my collection :)

This book is absolutely stunning! I loved reading the chat and looking at the magnificent pictures of our Barbie, Margot Robbie. It is going to have a place of honor amongst all my books as it reminds me of Barbie Summer.

Worth every cent. I love Margot Robbie, even have one of the MR Barbies, but what she and Andrew Mukamal do in this book is so much more than just showcasing the outfits made for the tour. They bring the designers and Barbie into the spotlight, but also talk about fashion now and then. A must have for any Barbie/fashion/Margot Robbie lover.

Loved loved loved this behind the scenes look at the overall vision and creation of this iconic press tour. Hearing how so many designers were inspired to become designers by Barbie and to then go on to create these looks was so full circle. Beautiful!

So fun. I secretly love fashion and it was fun to read a little more deeply about the intention behind so much of the world tour attire. Greta Gerwig says in the afterword “I love art that bleed it beyond the screen and becomes something more…” I would agree! So many artists took part and this book was a great compilation of art by historic and talented designers.

Absolutely love this book - beautiful photography and behind the scenes details. Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal must have had the most fun it's possible to have in Hollywood fashion!

I felt personally oppressed by the actors' strike last summer, as it stopped several of Margot's specific Barbie outfits from being seen. But we get a chance to see Gay Parisienne and Roman Holiday in the pages of this book!

I grabbed this book on a whim, and it was quite a quick read. As expected, it mainly consists of pictures, but the written insight was substantial. I had a hard time reading some of the cursive handwriting which took away from my experience of these insights. However, I felt that this book was very on par with the movie in terms of the substance and my problems with it. I've always been a big doll person and connected deeply with the movie but there is a perpetuation of gender roles inherent in the Barbie doll line that seeps into the movie and this book. Besides this, I love the fun and girly vibes, and this is a big step in the right direction for feminism. Plus, the outfits were fun to view, and it reminded me of my great experience at the theater.

Huge book; short read. It was such fun! Margot Robbie takes the reader on a "tour" of her premier outfits. I loved looking at all the photos of the outfits! I'll even admit to a little jealousy: I would love to get to be dressed up in these fun and also gorgeous frocks! Each of the outfit spreads also included photos of original Barbies in the inspirational outfit and it was so neat to see the compare/contrast/updates to the looks. The only little drawback was that the famous designers' notes on the outfits were included in their original handwriting. While they can all draw detailed sketches and come up with exquisite outfits, their handwriting was often hard to decipher. Recommended to Barbie, Barbie (the movie), and Margot Robbie fans!

One of the best photography and fashion books ever - great insight into how they chose certain designers to create 17 different press looks based on a real Barbie and a great way to showcase the ones the public didn’t get to see since the tour was cut short by the SAG strikes. A true gift for both fashion and Barbie lovers!

Hi Barbie! Cute coffee table book. Lots of pictures to see all of the styles that Margot wore on the Barbie press tour. It was interesting to read about how they chose which designer to create specific outfits and to see the designer’s sketches and thoughts.

It's everything. I love how carefully recreated the looks were for the press tour, right down to the jewelry. It's very clear that Margot and Andrew were thoughtful and having fun when deciding on what the outfits would look like. The noted on how he tried to bring them into a modern piece that Margot would still wear show such attention to detail. I love fashion and this book is a must, one of the best marketing concepts executed in modern day.

Absolutely beautiful coffee table book! I snagged this one from the library.

Anyone who loves great photography and fashion, would appreciate this book. I really enjoyed The Barbie movie, and this book captures the outfits Margot wore to all the press events for the movie. Wonderful information from the clothing designers about their creations, is included in this book.

Just a really fun, weekend read. It made me want to watch the movie again! 🩷

And there's something about the color pink, especially when you do a bright, hot pink - I feel like that's saying, I'm not embarrassed to be a girl. I hated pink when I was a little kid, not because I actually hated the color pink but because I was embarrassed to embrace my femininity. - Margot Robbie

Ouf, that resonates. I always loved the colour pink. When I was a kid, it was often the 'being a girl' part that I didn't like. I don't think I've ever seen it written out like that before, but after reading that bit, I just stared at the page for a while, thinkin' about stuff.

This book is GORGEOUS. If you love fashion, and Barbie, AND PINK, definitely give it a flip. The messages from the designers throughout the book who had the opportunity to collaborate with Margot and her team on the press tour for Barbie are so fun. You get a sense of what it was like for everyone involved, the excitement, and the meaning behind each look. Loved it.

This was an amazing behind the scenes look at the immense work to create visionary looks we all saw last year for the movie premieres. And first looks for some of them since the tour was cut short due to the SAG strike. In awe and inspiring.

Moviegoers in their Barbie Best were just as much of a spectacle as the film itself– with fashion as a catalyst for their self-actualization. Just as Barbie intended."

truly a moment that was meant to be preserved in a book!
