An enjoyable quick read that takes you right into early-Victorian atmosphere and shows the wide contrast between servants and rich. Sam and Rose were youthful lovers and separated when he went to London to seek his fortune at the age of 19. She had his baby and became a Christian, but he never returned; she lost faith he ever would. In the nine years since his departure, she spent her time supporting her child as a single mother.
Sam, on the other hand, has made money hand over fist. He has no joy in his life; only success. He doesn't believe God has any use for him and he thinks it was Rose who refused to wait for him.
Has a good Christian message as well.
Content: some innuendo; mentions of extramarital affairs, no details.
Second Chance Cinderella by Carla Capshaw Samuel Blackstone and Rose Smith grew up together in orphanage. The were able to get enough of an education that Samuel learned to cypher and was offered a job in London. He would return for Rose in a few weeks. Only the weeks passed by and months. Rose had to make choices that would change her life forever. Samuel turned bitter and grew richer.
When they run into each other eight years later life tilts once again. Samuel thinks he knows things about Rose and she only sees a cruel man in place of the young man she once loved. Secrets, misunderstandings and a world of difference in their place in the world causes a giant chasm between them. Is there any way that this couple who once were the other half to each other can cross it and find their lost happiness?
I couldn’t put this book down once I started reading it. I have enjoyed every previous book that Carla Capshaw has written and this one did not disappoint at all. It was written so you could clearly see a man who could buy anything he wanted verses a woman who had nothing as far as money and no say in her life as a servant. http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
I can see that others clearly love this book, but I can't even finish it. I don't know if it's all the "lord has given me everything" attitude or the bad writing. When I predicted that I'd roll my eyes a bunch, I was not wrong. I wish there was a return policy on kindle for bad books because is give this one back. There was so much potential that was ruined. This could have been another fun fairy tale, not a sermon on how I should live my life. For all the Christian people this is great, but if your not Christian, just stay away! So so so awful, no realism at all. The characters don't own up to their advancements or their faults. The heroine just heaves all get problems on god then belittles the hero because he doesn't do the same. I could even finish it because it was so awful. I've read Christian romances that were interesting and not so much in your face.
Rose Smith and Sam Blackstone grew up in an orphanage. They were always close and Sam promised he would always take care of Rose. School was easy for Sam but Rose had what we would today call dyslexia and never could learn to read. When Sam became a young man, he decided to move to London to try and earn his fortune. He promised Rose he would return for her and they would then be together forever, but he never returned.
Ten years later finds Rose scurrying to her job as a maid in the home of a wealthy family. Sam sees her go past and is sure it is his Rose. When he sees her again, she has been hired to serve at a dinner party in his home. Sam has become a very successful and wealthy stockbroker. Rose is shocked to see him and especially his cold reaction to her. There is a young woman acting as hostess at his table and declares that she and Sam will soon be wed. The young woman is accompanied by her father who tries to grope Rose. At the end of the evening, Rose drops onto a bench in a corner from sheer exhaustion and falls asleep. Sam carries her upstairs to a guest room where she stays overnight.
Why is Sam being so cruel to her by hiring her to serve him? Sam wonders where Rose has been all these years. The last he heard, she had gotten married and he could not find her.
Rose had borne a son named Andrew some months after Sam left her. Who was the man she had married and why wasn’t Sam able to find her?
Sam realizes that his love for Rose has never died and he also finds that the son she bore is his child. He wants nothing more than to have Rose and his son in his life to share everything he has with them. Thus begins a journey to get Andrew that turns into a nightmare for both of them.
There are a lot of twists and turns in this book. This is an interesting story and even though it is an Inspirational Historical Romance novel, I found it to be peppered with a bit too many religious references.
The romance in this Christian historical fiction novel is so incredibly sweet, forgiving, and enduring, but yet it doesn't go overboard and seem sappy, and it stays clean, but is still palpable. That takes talent, which Carla Capshaw has in abundance. I wish her books came out more often! Sam Blackstone is a great hero with wonderful values and priorities, yet he isn't perfect. Rose endures a great deal of misfortune for the sake of trying to provide for her son. Societal class expectations, jealousy, misunderstandings, betrayal, unconditional love, faith, and forgiveness all play a part in the plot. Set in England during the 1830's, I highly recommend this to anyone. You don't have to be a historical fiction fan to enjoy the twists and turns of this one, or the message of forgiveness it puts forth.
Pesan moral dalam buku ini adalah... Tuhan itu Maha Pengasih. Walau kita egois, di saat sedih & gembira. Tuhan akan selalu mengasihi kita.
Second Chance Cinderella by Carla Capshaw: Shelves : Victorian Era, historical-fiction, Christian Romance. Publisher: Elex (364 pages)
Cuma bedanya, ia pergi bukan tanpa drama diatas.
4. Ending-nya kurang greget :p 5. Ada beberapa kata typo yg menganggu.
A good pull yourself up by your bootstraps story set in Victorian England. Sam Blackstone and Rose Smith were both abandoned by their mothers at a rural orphanage/workhouse and were there until they aged out. Committed to one another, Sam who is intelligent and hard working heads to London and promises to return for Rose. Naturally a number of events, circumstances and people interfere in that happening. There is an HEA.
Picked it up and ended up rereading. Enjoyed it again!
There is something about the way Carla writes that just immediately pulls me into the story and doesn't let go! I had to read this all in a day! Her characters are so real to me, and they have a spot in my heart. I laughed and smiled all through the story too. I love a good Cinderella tale, and this was done wonderfully. My only complaint was that it ended! Haha
Carla Capshaw is one of my favorite authors. No matter what time period she writes, she does it well. I related to the heroine, since I'm a single mother, too and like all of Capshaw's heros, Sam is to die for.
What a charming story taking place in England. It is a page turner with twists and turns! Carla Capshaw is my all time favorite author!!! I recommend all who love historical , romance, and subtle Christian references to read it!
Sepertinya timeline-nya agak salah. 3,3⭐
I absolutely adored 'Second Chance Cinderella' by Carla Capshaw! This captivating historical Christian romance novel transported me to 1840s England, where love, forgiveness, and second chances await.
Rose Smith and Sam Blackstone's poignant love story stole my heart. Separated by tragedy, they get a second chance at love and faith when they reunite in a bustling London street. I was deeply invested in their journey, as they navigated the complexities of their past, present, and future.
Carla Capshaw's writing is masterful, weaving a tale that's both heart-wrenching and uplifting. The characters are multidimensional and relatable, with flaws and strengths that make them human. The Victorian-era setting is vividly depicted, immersing me in the world of high society and the struggles of the time.
What resonated most was the novel's exploration of forgiveness, redemption, and the power of love to heal wounds. Rose and Sam's story is a testament to the transformative power of God's love and grace.
If you enjoy historical Christian romance, second-chance love stories, and a good cry, 'Second Chance Cinderella' is a must-read! It's a beautiful, emotional journey that will leave you feeling hopeful and inspired.
I thought the characters feelings / reactions to each other were very realistic and that made for such a great story.
Though I will say, I rarely find abduction and/or ransom demands realistic and yet they make their way into 75% of the historical novels I read. Would have been better without that drama.
Cliche Story!!!! I had high expectations after going through the synopsis. Once I started reading this book, it turns out to be very boring before 25%. I would like to appreciate her story but lack a few emotional elements in the middle of the story. I would love to read more intriguing works from Carla Capshaw.
This was an awesome book, a page turner. Misunderstandings can ruin a person's life or their livelihood. Please this book, you will not be disappointed.
I hadn't read anything by Carla Capshaw before Second Chance Cinderella. The synopsis sounded interesting and I love a fairytale retelling. I was excited when I found out I had one the book through GoodReads.
I started this book about elven at night waiting for my littles to go to sleep. By midnight I was half way through and decided, going to bed a little later wouldn't be bad so I could find out what was going to happen in this story.
The twist to the Cinderella story was fun. Instead of having Rose meet her prince in the story, she has known him most of her life and is ready to marry him, but with no money, Sam, her prince needs to leave their town to start a new job opportunity. Promising to return soon to marry her and take her way, Sam leaves. After 9 years and some incidences that happened, Rose and Sam meet again in London.
In these years, Sam has changed in many ways. Rose however has not. When are reintroduced to Sam he is a bit cold and distant and rich. Rose is still poor, but she has a reason to be happy. She is content, for the most part with her life. However, the past still haunts her.
Sam had a bit of growing in the story to do. Rose also had to grow as well, but in different ways then Sam. I had a few issues with Sam when he started to threaten Rose in some instances when it came to their son. He was harsh to Rose in his persuasion tactics, but as the story progressed and his attitude changed, I could get past what he said. Rose had trust issues to get over and with her past, it was understandable why she had such a hard time with a history of being left behind by many people in her life.
I really enjoyed the pacing of this story. If you don't count this nine year gap at the beginning of the story, this book only takes place over the span of a week or two. The writing and pacing kept me reading. Each character was unique and offered something to the story and they all meshed well.
I think this is story is a great summer time read.
I won this book from the GoodReads first reads giveaway. I was not required to post a positive review. Thank you to the author for hosting the giveaway.

This was such a good book! It is filled with misunderstandings that kept two people apart. I really liked the two main characters, Rose and Sam. They were young and in love, then ended up separated. Nine years later, Sam is a wealthy man. But he carries around a lot of hurt and resentment towards his lost love. Meanwhile, Rose has been struggling to make ends meet for herself and young son. When these two cross paths again, it is hard for both of them to rein in their emotions.
This book was a real page turner for me. The emotions that Rose and Sam experience felt very real. Rose trusts in the Lord, who has been her sustainer through the tough times. Sam is bitter about the idea of God. There is a lot of distrust on both sides for awhile and that adds great tension. I loved the scene when Sam realized that he was a father. Just wonderful! This was a very enjoyable story.
“Second Chance Cinderella” is a fluffy little read I took to Maui along with several other books. I liked the cover and thought the plot sounded fun.
Little country village Rosie grows up as an orphan with another orphan boy, Sam. With no families, both become devoted to one another and vow to be together forever. Sam has a talent for numbers and is sponsored off to London for a special education. He promises to return for Rose in a few months, but problems end up keeping them apart. Nine years later they meet in London, Sam a highly successful businessman, and Rosie is a poor maid slaving for others while trying desperately to support her little boy. Yes, you guessed it, he’s Sam’s son. He has never forgotten Rose and is shocked to find out of the situation. The story is how they deal with the past, the present, and just how important is their future together.
I really liked the plot, but the ever-increasing “preachy” tone went overboard. Good story, but I would not keep it to read again.
Even though this book is set several decades before the beginning of 'Downton Abbey', it definitely has the same feel to it. I really enjoyed imagining the scenes and what the characters 'upstairs' and 'downstairs' might be like based on what I've seen with 'Downton'. I liked the way the whole story came together: I thought the characterisations were very well done and enjoyed seeing both Rose and Sam learn and grow and become better people throughout the book. Carla Capshaw is definitely going on my 'authors to read' list!
This is how it went down: blah blah blah, Jesus saves us all, blah blah blah let's pray, blah blah blah, The only thing that matters is faith in God. I think you get the point. This is a heavy Christian Romance with zero sexy times and bordered on outright proselytizing.
It included the prerequisite born-again Christian, apparent miracles, evil one dimensional gentiles and a frequent dusting of the biblical Scriptures.
Not my preferred genre but the story had a lot of potential and the writing was good, hence the three-star review.
I LOVED this book...... It reminded me why I love reading. It made me feel the way Jane Austin's movies make you feel. I felt the heartbreak, the desperation and the longing of which only a great writer can convey. The love between the two characters is so real I could feel it and the book lived through that emotion! Beautiful work!
"This story of misunderstandings and uncharitable interference set in the world of the working classes makes for an absorbing tale. The main characters’ road to happiness is quite captivating" (RT Book Reviews). 4 stars
This is a wonderful book. The spiritual messages are good. The characters are well crafted. Their interactions are full of emotion, whether there is anger, happiness, or comedy. Also, the book is interesting from the beginning. I would recommend this!
