I was born in Sacramento, California. As a child, I wrote plays for the neighbor kids and invited their parents to performances. As I got older, I started my own family newspaper, handwritten and hand delivered, for the extortion price of 25 cents. Eventually, I moved into writing angst-ridden poems and journals – lots of them. Right after graduating from high school, I married the love of my life whom I met while walking on a beach in Northern California. We had two children, spent years building a house, juggling pets and living on sailboats. All the while, I wrote stories but I never attempted to sell them.
When the kids started Junior High, I started marketing my writing. When my short stories were turned down by mainstream women's magazines, my mother suggested I try a confession magazine. I sold my first story to them within two weeks. What a feeling of accomplishment! I walked on air for about a week! It took me almost two years to sell my next story, but after that, I went on to sell over two dozen to the various confession magazines. The experience of learning to get a story off the ground within a sentence or two was invaluable as was the connection I made with one of the editors. When she moved to a small book publisher, I sent her a completed manuscript which she bought. I wrote twenty books for her, mostly romances with a few mysteries thrown in. During this time, I learned about pacing, plot development and characterization. There is nothing a writer can do to improve their craft that trumps the actual setting of oneself in a chair and writing. Eventually I sold a manuscript to Silhouette. Now, forty books and many editors later, I've written for Avalon, Silhouette, Kensington, and Harlequin Intrigue I am also still married to the love of my life and our two children have given us three wonderful grandchildren.
Alex Foster's plan crashes and he winds up lost in the wilderness for three months. He finally makes it home to the news that his wife Jessica is pregnant - and that somebody might have tampered with his plane! It seems a domestic terrorist wants Alex out of the way because he was part of a group who figured out his conspiracy to commit acts of terror so the country would oppose gun control. Or something! When townsfolk start getting murdered, Alex must find out who the terrorist's contact in town is.
Easy-to-read romantic thriller had a nice touch in the fact that the main characters were already married, but with Alex's disappearance for three months compounding on some of their marriage woes. Jessica even wondered if Alex had run out on her!
The big problem here for me was that I found it very, very, very difficult to believe that Alex had been stranded in the wilderness for that long! The book kind of glossed over his survival skills, but never adequately explained how he remembered to take pretty much everything he needed in an emergency with him - except a phone! I mean, come on! Really?!?
Also, although Jessica's fears that Alex might be keeping things from her is grounded in reality, I got very fed up with her getting pissy whenever Alex was justifiably hesitant to bring her with him on police business. It's dangerous - and against the law! Get over yourself, Jessica! She acted like a bit of an entitled princess.
It's not as action-packed as a standard Intrigue book, but it was diverting! It built to a fairly suspenseful climax too.
I didn't think the title of this book fit the plot, and story line. The story did start with Detective Alex Foster being stranded after his plane went down. Everyone thought he was dead, including his wife Jessica. That was just where the book started. The book really didn't go in to great detail about that time that Alex was stranded.
This story had a lot of suspense to it. After Alex was rescued, he found out his plane crash was no accident. He had to find out who was after him. Before he crashed, and was stranded for months he, and his wife were having problems. Alex being in law enforcement wanted to shelter Jessica, from his job. Jessica felt Alex was keeping her at arm's length. They both wanted kids, but so far Jessica had not been able to get pregnant. It was sweet when Alex found out Jessica was pregnant with his child. The two grew as a couple, throughout the story. Someone was targeting Jessica, and Alex was very protective of her, while he worked the investigation. At one point I thought I knew who the villain was, but it turned out I was wrong. I love it when I can't guess the plot. The author did a great job writing this story.
Very good book that had me unable to put it down until it was all done. It opens with Alex flying his plane through a snowstorm to a meeting with friends. His mind is somewhat distracted by the memory of the argument he'd had with his wife the night before. He's also not feeling well, which affects his reflexes when his plane has engine problems. He crash lands in the middle of a remote area.
His wife Jessica believes that he is either dead or has disappeared to get away from their troubled marriage. Three months later she is stunned when he reappears, limping, bearded and much thinner, but very much alive. Both of them look at his return as a chance to repair their marriage, but can they break old habits?
The strain on their marriage had been caused by a couple things. First, the stresses of their inability to conceive and Alex's refusal to consider adoption pulled them apart. Second was Alex's overprotectiveness. He wouldn't talk to Jessica about his work, preferring to keep the seamier side of his life separate. But this left Jessica feeling as though he didn't trust her to be able to handle it, and that she wasn't important enough to him to be part of his whole life.
I loved the rekindling of their marriage. Alex is overjoyed about the baby and determined to get things back on track. He is still protective, but after three months of uninterrupted thinking time, realizes that he has to make some changes. His love for Jessica was never in question, he just has to learn new ways to show it. Jessica is a bit more cautious at first, not sure if it is too late to fix their marriage. But she is determined to try, and vows that she won't let him shut her out any longer. I loved seeing her stubborn streak come out as she insisted on being involved. The scene at the lake was intense and emotional as Jessica finally breaks through some of Alex's walls and he opens up to her.
The suspense of the story was great. When Alex gets back and has a chance to talk to his friend Nate, he discovers that his crash may not have been an accident, and may be linked to an attack on Nate and the death of a friend of theirs. There is a home grown terrorist who has been coordinating attacks on ordinary people at holiday celebrations and they believe that something is planned for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. As Alex investigates the possible sabotage of his plane, a mentally challenged young man and his mother are murdered, and several nuisance attacks are made on Jessica. They are sure it is all linked, but the question is how? All indications point to a local involvement, but the challenge is figuring out who it is. There are multiple possibilities, with quite a few twists and turns before all is revealed. The ending was really intense with danger to both Alex and Jessica and lots of excitement before it was all over.
I really enjoyed this intriguing, second chance, romance. I bought this at a local Goodwill store and I voluntarily chose to review it. I've given it a 4.5* rating but it is not for the under 18 readers. This contains some sexual content and a lot of violence. It has a lot of action and it certainly was a page turner. It certainly has an interesting ending. Lots of clues to lead you astray for your guesses.
This story continued from Shattered (The Rescuers #1) by Alice Sharpe. Alex was flying in to meet his friends but he never made it. His plane was sabotaged causing him to crash into the mountains during the dead of winter. Somehow he was able to survive. His wife, Jessica was beside herself. She was newly pregnant and not certain if she would ever see her husband again.
When he returns, Alex has a new perspective on life due to all the time he had to think and ponder while he tried to survive the elements. It becomes pretty evident that whomever tampered with his plane was still out to do him in. He learned from his friend, Nate about the contingent of young men being brainwashed in the name of patriotism. And that theme followed into this book too.
It was a fun book and I liked to see what happened after Nate’s story in book one.
Harlequin Intrigues are my guilty pleasure and I am always a fan no matter the title.
Well this was interesting. The first harlequin Intrigue book that I've read in which the main female and male are already married! That surprised me.
The story starts with Alex (a detective) flying in a rented plane. Something goes wrong and he lands on a frozen lake (and yes the ice does begin to crack). He saves himself and has to find a place to spend a few months taking care of himself-including was sounds like a broken leg. Anyway he gets back to town. His wife Jessica has had a hard time without him. She didn't know if something happened to the plane or he just took off. They had been having problems in the marriage. Alex comes back and finds out his wife is pregnant. Someone starts targeting them and others around them. Alex is very protective of his wife (at times just a little beyond belief). Lots are twists and turns in this book. The action keeps coming. This is a good book to read for the suspense part.
In Sharpe’s romantic suspense novel, Detective Alex Foster’s plane went down in a storm while enroute to a reunion with friends. Three months later he emerges from the Bitterroot Mountains very much alive after having survived on fish for all those months. Reunited with his wife, Jessica, he learns that she is pregnant, something they had tried for years to achieve. As facts surface, it becomes clear that the plane crash was not an accident nor was it due to outdated equipment. It was intentional and now someone has targeted Jessica. Determined to protect her and their unborn child, Alex is willing to risk their marriage to keep her safe.
A wonderful story that includes a detective stranded in the mountains determined to come home to his pregnant wife only to get caught in the crosshairs of a killer. A great addition to The Rescuers.
