A win-win negotiation? Truman "Tru" Jelinek's life is pretty much off the rails. With his professional hockey career on thin ice, and his personal life falling apart, he's ready to implement some serious changes. Helping Jenny Martin - the only girl he's ever loved - make her dreams a reality is a good place to start. There's just one problem: Jenny doesn't want his help. She barely wants to speak to him. But Tru is prepared to negotiate a deal that even Jenny can't refuse. As trading favors turns into sharing passion, he has to face the truth that when it comes to Jenny, the game is far from over.

This book didn't work for me on so many levels I'm not really sure where to start.
I guess the first thing is, I found the hockey theme completely impenetrable. I don't follow it, it's not played at all in my country and I have very little interest in sports, so I found much of the play jargon and inside knowledge complete gibberish, especially the politics and workings of drafting and trading players. I get that it's vitally important to the storyline, and obviously Sugden loves it so I can't blame her, but it left me cold as detail after detail went way over my head - and I'm not doing side research into NHL and ice hockey just so I can understand what is going on in a story!
Beyond that, I don't mean to be a prude, but I just didn't connect with Jenny. At all. I don't want to be a shamer and I don't want to sound over-possessive (hey I offered my party-loving ex an open relationship if that's what she wanted) but I wouldn't be happy starting a relationship with someone who'd literally slept with all of my work mates and friends. That just doesn't sound like the basis for a stable relationship. ...and if Jenny had been so damaged in that respect and didn't like it: ...why did she do it anyway? Damaged goods and red flag, right there.
At this point I should say I'm not completely unsympathetic to the characters, in fact their relationship echoed mine in some respects. Although I haven't experienced sexual abuse, but much like Jenny my partner did, from a family member; it's never been revealed, eating away at her for years. So I understand Truman's feelings, and empathise with Jenny's. The amount of damage that can do (on so many levels) can't be understated, and I think was an element of our breakup. So, I'm probably over-invested and over-reacting to the key themes of 'A Perfect Trade'.
I thought that Truman, as flawed as he was, tried very hard to overcome his failings, and despite some understandable spectacular failures made heroic, unbelieveable concessions, was considerate at every level and made huge sacrifices to achieve what he wanted. For no thanks and several backhands. It's good to see that when man tries his best, and goes above and beyond, sacrificing everything he values, he gets nothing but complaints and abuse. It makes me wonder why we (and him) even bother.
One of the central themes in this book revolves around his supposed arrogance and making decisions for others 'because he knows better' but I found the conflict around this immensely irritating because, well actually he does. Nice to see his family and friends have his back.
Going further, about halfway through this I just lost any interest or belief in it, as Jenny was just annoying and irritating me so much. She was uncommunicative, demanding, neurotic and manipulative. I lost all faith in the story and I just sped-read it so I could get to the end, which was also unbelievable, felt hollow and false. It's probably just me over-reacting again as it bring up bad memories of similar situations, but I didn't enjoy this at all.
I'm going to spoiler tag the rest of this as I'm going to support the above by quoting and discussing key parts, so don't click through if you don't want the main parts spoilt.
Back in January I got on a Hockey Romance kick and one of my favorite discoveries was Anna Sugden's A Perfect Distraction! I anxiously awaited the July release of book two, A Perfect Trade - and I was not disappointed!
We got to know Tru and Jenny in book 1, as Bad-Boy's closest friend and the team's puck bunny of choice. I'll be honest, I was nervous about getting to know Jenny better. Puck Bunny's have sort of a low standing in my social world (as in, I can't imagine being one and don't have a ton of respect for them!) but Jenny was different from the beginning and this story just proves that! I was so invested in their romance that I couldn't quit turning the pages!
Character development in this book was one of the high points for me. Tru and Jenny both grew by leaps and bounds over the course of the story, and while they both made some bone-headed choices? I couldn't help but love them all the more for those choices! Anna Sugden's writing is phenomenal, she's one of those authors that you can absolutely get lost in the pages with! (And I loved that - I was so sucked in I was hoping Tru would pick Colorado if his contract with the Ice Cats fell through because I would love to see him as an Av! Then I got snapped back to reality, and realized it didn't matter what team he picked because he's a fictional character!)
My only disappointment is that the book ended. (And that it's not clear if there will be a book three in the Ice Cats series - although I am holding out hope! Perhaps one of Tru's brothers?)
If you're a fan of Jaci Burton or Jill Shalvis (or my beloved Toni Aleo, Catherine Gayle and Jami Davenport) I think you will absolutely love getting lost in the pages of an Anna Sugden book - although I definitely recommend starting with A Perfect Distraction so you can get to know this world a little better!
Professional hockey player, Truman (Tru) Jelinek, life has been on a downward spiral. He decides to help the one person he ever loved, Jenny Martin, obtain a dream. However, Jenny is not sure if she can forgive him for the mistake he made in their past.
I love Tru. He’s a good guy and wants to take care of the people he cares about to a fault. He seems to bend over backwards to make amends to Jenny. I felt horrible for him that everything seemed to go wrong for him at once. He means well and I felt people were a little harsh in their reactions toward him.
My heart went out to Jenny. She had so many unfortunate things happen to her. It is understandable why it would be difficult for her to let Tru in. That being said, I loved the scene where her younger sister, Lizzie, was mad at Jenny: It was a bit of an eye-opener for her.
Tru’s mom, Karina’s misuse of slang cracked me up. Being first-generation American, I could relate the situation.
I enjoyed the plot. So much was going on but everything was believable and compelling. I have read a lot of hockey romances, and it seems that most of them portray the organization as a family. The Perfect Trade presented the Ice Cats as more of a business. This is a fascinating point of view, one that is probably more realistic.

WOW Awesome story I loved it from start to finish and although I was eager to get to the end I didn't want this one end :)
Tru Jelinek is one heck of an ice hockey player and plays for the Ice Cats from New Jersey he has 3 brothers a wonderful mother who has raised the boys on her own after their father walked out on them but Tru is like superman always wanting to protect people from getting hurt he has a big heart but a big mistake that he made years before has left Jenny Martin who has had a really bad start in her life and the girl he has always loved bruised and battered and they very rarely speak although they see each other often as Jenny is Queen of the Puck Bunnies. But when Jenny decides that she would like to make a big change in her life now that the one person who has kept her scared has gone and when Tru offers to help this sets both their hearts aflutter and the spark is still there but there is so much to overcome the past needs to be settled so as both can get on with the future. This is such a moving heartwarming story that will have you crying and jumping up and down cheering for both Tru and Jenny.
This is the second book in this series and catching up with the characters from the past story is wonderful and I highly recommend reading both os these books and I am so looking forward to more about the Ice Cats and their wonderful families and friends don't miss this one. Thank you MS Sugden for an awesome read :)
"I'm sorry, I thought I was doing the right thing." Tru Jelineck has said that so often it should be tattooed on his forehead. Par for the course for a man who thinks he knows what is best for everyone in his life. The trouble is, while his intentions are good, his manner and actions are often overbearing, unwelcomed and sometimes downright dangerous due to the consequences issuing from those actions. Jenny Martin has first hand experience with Tru's "helpfulness". When they were teenagers and in love, Jenny entrusted Tru with a secret, a horrible truth about her life that he swore to divulge to no one. But...thinking only of helping Jenny, thinking he was doing what was best, he told someone he thought he could trust...a priest...Jenny's uncle. The aftermath of that revelation landed Jenny in the hospital, damaged in more ways than one and her relationship with Tru even more broken than her body. Trust is such a fragile thing...so easily broken and so difficult to regain when lost. But, to make both of their dreams a reality, they will have to find a way to put the past in the past and repair the trust that has been lost.
I really enjoyed Tru and Jenny's story and getting to know some of the rest of the Ice Cats. I wanted to jump into the page and strangle one(or two) of the characters (you will know which one) but things did work out in the end.
A Perfect Trade is book 2 in Anna Sugden Jersey Ice Cats series. Tru and Jenny both have pasts that are filled with a lot of hurt. Tru betrayed Jenny's trust when they were teenagers and their relationship has never been the same. Now both of their lives are in an upheaval. Tru wants Jenny to trust him but can she? Jenny fears trusting Tru will lead her to more heartache. Or if Jenny trusts Tru can they both find their happiness?
This is the author's second book with many more books to come!
"A Perfect Trade offers a realistic treatment of modern-day life and romance in spite of the fact that a famous hockey player is involved. The story is quite believable, as are the characters" (RT Book Reviews). 4 stars
A Perfect Trade by Anna Sugden is the second installment in the New Jersey Ice Cats series. Elements of dreams, plans and redemption are sprinkled throughout this hockey romance both on and off the ice.
Jenny Martin is the “queen of the puck bunnies,” the women who chased those sexy hockey players and a grade school friend of an Ice Cats. Is she ready to relinquish her crown for something more fulfilling? While her friends are settling down and beginning the next phase of life, Jenny wonders if she’ll deserving of the same happiness? A chance at “forever after” too.
Truman “Tru” Jelinek has known Jenny since grade school and was once ready to save Jenny. Instead, there were consequences from that attempted rescue and it put a rift between them. Trust was betrayed and their friendship was torn apart.
Can love conquer all? Both Tru and Jenny have had great loss and pain to overcome. Is it possible that Tru will keep his word? Will those painful secrets stay buried or will they resurface now that the town is set to memorialized a beloved citizen.
This installment is full of passion, family relationships, great hockey and all the other goodies that we expect when we turn the page of Anna Sugden’s books.
Embedded within this story is the subject of abuse, delicately written and weaved with tender care. As our heroine learns to speak out about her unspeakable past, as a reader I wanted to leap into the pages and give her a supportive hug. Well done Anna for again tackling those sensitive subjects.
Even with the few crazy things he must deal with and overcome, Tru Jelinek is a hero that radiates warmth, sexy appeal and charm. A desire to protect his family and friends is what makes him so appealing and real.
I received this book from the author for a fair and honest review I would happily purchase or gift this book.
If you’re looking for a fresh series that includes hockey, a team with sexy players that are a family both on and off the ice, then you must read this book. Anna’s attention to details is fantastic and her world of hockey is vivid, exciting and packed with hockey goodness.
Amazing book..Second book in the New Jersey Ice Cats...Jenny Martin retired being buck bunny of the Ice Cats has a lot on her plate. The one person she doesn't need to help her is Tru Jelinek. He did enough for her a long time ago, and it hurt her more then he knew. She never told him the truth...When a good friend has a stroke...Tru is right there, and will do anything for her..the lengths he goes is pretty amazing. Jenny is not so sure about it. When things unfold it becomes clear what truly is important..It took some friends, her sister to make her see what she was doing.
Tru has other problems besides this professional hockey career on the chopping block. Jenny is back in his life and he doesn't want to give up what feels like a second chance....Will Jenny accept his plan to help her? He has told her how he feels. The family secret he's hiding...
Buy the book. You won't be sorry.
It's a great book about second chances..Love...tender moments. Good friends.. Love this series...Ann is a new author to me, and once I read A PERFECT DISTRACTION I was just hooked.
I really enjoyed A Perfect Trade. This book was well-written and grabbed my attention right from the start. This was one story that I didn't want to end. It made me wish I read at a slower pace, so I would still be absorbed in Anna Sugden's characters. I loved the idea of the heroine being the queen of "puck bunnies", that being said don't judge her too harshly, she has a story and has reasons for why she does certain things. I really enjoyed Jenny as a heroine and her and Tru definitely made me believe in this story. Great characters, great storyline, and I definitely recommend giving this a read.
This was a GREAT book! I really loved the characters of Tru and Jenny. Their story really drew me in and was well written! I won this book as a good reads Giveaway and I will definitely be reading more of Anna's books! Plus I got this really fast in the mail!
