Icy whispers brush against 18-year-old Lorelei Huntington’s cheeks when she sleeps. She wakes to it at 2:47 A.M. every night. But the ghosts warning her in her sleep aren’t the only monsters in her life. Lorelei knows what it means to fall for the wrong guy. She knows what it's like to hide in the dark, silent and praying. She knows how it feels to watch as everyone you love is taken. And now, after fifty years of looking over her shoulder, the icy whispers have come back. Again, they find her vulnerable, exhausted, and hiding. Fearful of seeing him again, but desperate for answers, she goes home. What she finds isn’t what she left. Nothing is the same. But then again, neither is she.
This story is a branch of the Roses, one necessary for the finale.
A Shade of Vampire, Twilight, and The Vampire Gift fans have found their next series. The Roses is a cult classic of YA adventure and romance, with all 9 books completed.
"I couldn't put it down!" ***** "Very different storyline!" ***** "I've read The Roses 3 times now and I'm still hooked!" *****
10/08/18 - I am listening to the audio. Not sure if it is the narrator or what, but I am not enjoying it as much as my review in 2013 said I did. I am a little bored and annoyed by the heroine.
05/03/14 - REVIEW: Where do I begin without giving anything away???? I will try to keep my review short since I want you to experience this book with fresh eyes.
“Danger Lorelei. He is coming.”
Tara Brown has done it again. I thought I have figured out her “angles” in books, but I was wrong…big time. I don’t know where the Blackwater series is going to take us, but I know I want to find out NOW!! I need that sequel.
Lorelei is a great heroine in this book. She knows certain things are expected of her especially as a woman of the South in 1964. She is expected to feel and act a certain way. Sadly who Lorelei is supposed to marry is already selected for her by her family.
Then she meets Mr. Whitlock. Mr. Jameson Andrew “Whit” Whitlock. Whit is hot and dreamy and everything else
“I glace at him and know he took it all away. My love for him ruined everything.”
I had some concerns when I read the Synopsis and saw that the book was first going to start in 1964 and then switch to 2012. I hope that does not stop anyone from reading this book. The switch in periods is done well as only Tara Brown can do. She is an amazing storyteller. I love when an author can amaze me.
Did I skim? No. I was afraid I was going to miss something.
Pace of the story: Very good.
Did I feel connected to the characters? Yes
Positives: The writing. The mystery of what was going on. You never know what surprises will “show” up. Sidenote: In my next life if I have a chauffeur, I want one like Ramon.
Negatives: The story just ended. I thought I was missing something, so I reread the last chapter. I know this is part of the series and the ending was a “cliffy” but it took me a minute to go “OH.”
Do I recommend? Yes.
Book Format Read: A copy has been provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Loved the beginning of the book, hated it from the middle onwards. The first half of the book had me on my toes. It was charming and exciting. Then it started getting creepy and scary. The kind from a good horror movie. However past the middle, Lorelei started to get really annoying. A nasty bitch even. I just can’t bring myself to even like her anymore. Her actions are of a petty child.
The story starts from when Lorelei was young. Lorelei’s mother hates her. She constantly berates, calling her fat and doesn’t seem to act like a normal mother should. We later on learn why. Her mother is trying very desperately to have Lorelei wed off. In the midst of it, Lorelei met Whit when she almost died of heat stroke; being trapped in the middle of no where. They formed a bond and the connection was real. The story went on till something ominous happened.
As the reader, we will have to wait a looooooooooong time for Lorelei to get her sh*t together. She went through hell but I do believe any normal person would want to understand and know what happened to her loved ones rather than run for 45? 50? years. Not especially when Whit was trying his damnest to explain things to her. She goes to “LALALA I DON’T WANT TO LISTEN TO YOUR EXCUSES” mode most of the time. Ugh.
Whit did something wrong but had showed that he would never hurt Lorelei in anyway. After the reunion, all Lorelei did was run when she meets with the tiniest problems. She literally runs away from all her problems (at least 3 times since the reunion).
When Whit finally has the chance to explain, she blames him for not telling her earlier. It went from bad to worse from there. I couldn’t stand Lorelei anymore. She’s 60+ and yet she’s acting like she never aged. I can relate to the younger Lorelei as she was trapped in a conservative family. But after 50 years of living, I think she should grow up some.
The 2nd half of the book felt like a nice guy chasing a snotty princess whose ghost sister and ancestor have anger issues. Rather than helping her or explaining things that Lorelei clearly doesn’t understand, they pull the “I-tried-warning-you-for-years” crap. Ugh #457892162.
Yep, this is another one of those books where I need it on my shelf in paperback. Read this bad boy in one night, (nothing new I know) it was a real page turner though. Whit that boy I seriously loved right off, "There's fluid over here. Looks like the car overheated. It was hotter than Billy goat's ass in a pepper patch today." Lorelei that girl cracks me up until there's no tomorrow, "None of your names suit you. I'm sorry, but I'll have to call you Mr. Whitlock. I knew a James, he was sort of a cocky jerk. He could talk the hair off a dog." Having Whit be Scottish is well, I like my accents AND the man has tattoos I like those too, (winks) "We also favor appearing in the odd romance novel. Got to keep appearances up. I try not to wear the kilt unless I absolutely have to. Bit breezy if you get my drift." Whit may be a cheeky ba***** but he's truly protective of his woman, "I'm here now. If he's out there, he doesn't want to come near you, it won't be good for him. You're safe. Men like him are chicken s***s anyway. If he sees me he'll be all handshakes and kindness. It's only when he gets a girl alone that he shows his true colors." He's also funny, "Shove over. I don't ride b****" Typical man always have to be the one driving! I know while finishing the book Tara was worried about having enough 'Southern Drawl' in here, and I think there is the right amount of 'twang' any more and it might be a little bit overboard lol.
This was my first Tara Brown book and I absolutely loved it! Really well written, original and intriguing, I read the whole thing in one sitting. Couldn't put it down. The whole story had this overlying mystery and each time another piece of the puzzle came to light, I felt like there were 10 mew questions brought with it and I loved that.
Loreli was a great heorine to follow and I enjoyed all the side characters too.
I only wish that I had read the earlier books in the Devil's Roses series before reading this, even though it says it's book one of its own series, I felt like there would have been helpful background info had I read the others first.
The first half of the book is written the way the south americans speak. Meaning you get a lot of Scarlet O Hara form "Gone with the wind". Very frustrating I must say. As far as the plot goes it is interesting but I think it could be better. I have to say I was really put of by the whole "Gone with the wind" theme and this is the only thinh I keep having in my mind. And the way the female bad ass correct all wrongs and the way her best friend's life ends up....
Blackwater is book 6 in The Devil's Roses Series this book could be read as a stand-alone novel but I recommend to read it as part of the series. We are introduced to Lorelei in this book, and even though some of my favorite characters are not in this story I still enjoyed every page of Lorelei's story. I have a feeling she'll be an important character in the future. I can't get enough of this series. 5 stars!
This set was fantastic. Of course Dorian was my favorite. I almost never cry and I cried 13 times. 13. Plus dozens of other times where I almost cried. Loved the ending because it completes and sets up for the next set. I still have questions, but nothing major. A must read!!
Blackwater: A Dark Paranormal Fantasy (The Roses Book 6)
This book had me captivated from the moment I started it; I loved the way it was written and I felt so drawn into Lorilei's story~~~I felt the storyline was spectacular … what a horrible person their mom turned out to be… I definitely recommend this book 📖/series 📚!!!
This would be a good stand-alone book or the start of a new series but, the Roses aren't even in this book until 80% and then only for a moment. I missed all the characters I've grown to love.
I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.
Wow!!- There really are no words to say. I am rarely speechless, but I was after reading this crazy (AMAZING) book. (Tara, my girl- You've done it again!) As corny as it sounds, if this book were a song it would be considered pitch perfect. Truly!!! Blackwater (The Blackwater Witches#1) is truly an amazing start to a new series. It has all the elements that'll keep you gripped from the first word to the very last. Love, romance, intrigue and heartbreak all mixed in with an interesting twist of paranormal funk to keep you hooked (witches, vampires, ghosts and hybrids,.. oh my..). The premise to this story is pretty complex and intriguing, but as a typical Tara B book you come to expect no less. The story mainly takes place in Louisiana and bounces back and forth between 1964 and present day with a group of characters that are engaging and real and suck you right into the ride as if you were a part of this fantastical journey yourself. Now the paranormal aspects of this book are out of this world and well thought out. Tara always comes up with these crazy and kind of whacked out imaginings that seem way out there and unrealistic, but once she puts her very talented spin on words, makes them appear very real and true and not so crazy after all. So much to the point that you feel as if you are right there living in real time with the characters and going through it with them. As in all of Tara's books, these characters come to life, are totally believable and right on key, as you read about them and get trapped within a story that sucks you right in. You laugh, you cry,.. you pant (hehehe) and your heartbreaks over and over again at the trials the characters in this complex story face. You feel loss as they do, pain as they feel, confusion and so much more on a broad spectrum. There is so much to take in, you are literally inundated with the swell of emotions this story invokes. The easy way Tara bounces back and forth between time periods and switches things up keeps you gripped from beginning to end, and not confused in the least. I loved that aspect of the story because it was so original and so well thought out that it was a seamless journey to follow. The two lead characters in this story (Lorelei and Whit)are a set of hot and conflicted souls, their feelings for one another transcends over a span of 48+ years amidst a lot of anger, more than little miscommunication and misunderstandings and an unrequited love for one another that just doesn't quit and keeps you guessing until the very end. Despite all the wrong doings in their past you are sincerely rooting for them to pull through it and just get to the damn happy ending they both deserve. And believe me if Lorelei doesn't wanna chance it with Whit, then I would gladly exchange my boring life with hers so that I could get a piece of the walking talking sex on a stick-Whit. Hello Nummy man.. (boy-o-boy, the things I would do to that man if he were real and not a figment of Tara's very over active imagination.) I think I fell in love a little with him in the process of this story (total book boyfriend material). His sweet, romantic side, his bad ass bad boy charm, his undying love for Lorelei and let's not forget his hot as shit Scottish Brogue. Uhmm Hello yes please!!! It literally tore me up to see "THE END" in boldface staring at me, all the while, Tara at her greatest, leaves you hanging and out of breath yet again with another of her famous cliffhangers. (Word of advice, woman- get to steppin on book 2 I need to know what happens- Please!!!) So to stop all of my crazy rambling on what a fantastic read this book was. Just buy it, and read it for yourself. If you want to hunker down within a fantasy world that'll keep your heart racing,.. then breaking,.. then racing again. I suggest you pick it up. You won't be sorry as you get sucked into Tara B's crazy ass mind and beautiful yet haunting words. it's a joyride that'll keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. I promise! 5++ stars all the way- Kudo's Tara- you did it again. Congrats (and thanks for sharing the Opportunity for me to read it, it was an honor You Rock- Chica)
I wish I could leave you with one word: WOW but that may not fly with you! But it sums it up! No? Want more? Okaaaaay ;) Tara Brown is a story telling genius! She literally grabs you, tosses you into the pages and you're stuck there until you finally close the book at the end. You won't complain about it either! You will be lost. There is fascination throughout this entire story and you will have a reel playing in your mind with all these delicately created characters. Lorelei's narration gives this story the perfect life that grasps you from the get go. You will instantly like her and go head first with her in this adventure. She has lived with the icy chills and whispers that keep her up late and terrify her into sleeping with lights on. She hears the warnings and feels the air around her whenever she tries her escape. But is it possible that everything she fears of these nights is everything she should run to? Lorelei is stuck in a battle to be the proper southern woman she was raised to be. Her hateful mother constantly reminding her of all her supposed short comings, but with one tragedy comes a safety she feels in the arms of a stranger. A familiarity that she doesn't quite understand. She's entranced by him and he with her. Mr Whitlock wants her hand in marriage, but what secrets will have to be uncovered so they can be together!? When Lorelei runs from all this darkness and betrayal she lives as much as she can until the whispers return and what she finds isn't what she thought all these years. And still there are secrets that will forever change everything she has known and she will make decisions that could cost the lives of those she truly loves. Grab this book! It's bewitching! I give it my thumbs up!
So I have now read all but one of Tara Brown's books, and that one is being saved for a rainy day. If any of you have read her work and liked the Devil’s Roses series, I highly recommend this book.
In Baton Rouge, 1964, Lorelei Huntington is just finishing up with finishing school and learning to be a ‘proper’ southern lady when this story starts. At 2:47am she wakes to icy whispers every night. They terrify her, so she has her best friend/driver’s grandmamma make them go away. It’s only later on that she realizes what the whispers really are. One day, Ramon (her best friend/driver) is driving her home when the car gets overheated and he leaves to go find help. This is when Mr. Whitlock is introduced and, if you’re anything like me or Lorelei, you fall for him instantly. Their story, which bounces from 1964 to 2012 and back, captivates you and makes you feel everything that Lorelei feels. Like in her book The Lonely, Tara Brown has me rooting for the wrong guy and loving every second of it.
There has not been a single book by Tara Brown that I have disliked, and this one is no exception. Though her books are mostly paranormal, she makes her characters come to life and seem real. Towards the end of this one, she brings in some characters that I was beyond excited to see! So thank you Tara Brown for your amazing writing. You have a real talent and I wish I could convince everyone to give your books a chance. Each new one that I read becomes my new favorite. Now I just need to find a way to waste time until Born 2 comes out! (:
WOW I will say it again! This book was steamy and hot! I loved it! You meet some great characters and see how they grow throughout the book and it makes you think how well Tara Brown built them. Blackwater is one of my top 2013 reads of the year and I can say that it was more than I expected it to be. That is saying a lot because I thought it'd be awesome but man was I wrong it was superfreakingfatasticallyawesome! yes that is a word in my book. When you get a paranormal book that is in the south, old times, and with great characters you get what I call a "Jaw dropping, eye popping" read and I mean it. This book was outstanding and I am dying to read book two!
Lorelei was a great character. She was snobby, naive, a push over and a princess but quickly learned that it gets you nowhere. She grew so much as a character and you can see it throughout the whole book, you get a view of her that is all-sided. She was my favorite, and not at the beginning lol. Her changing made her seem not so prissy but strong, courageous, and selfless.
Witt was a handsome man that knew what he was doing. I don't say that because of how well she says he was in the bedroom ;) I say that because he was so well adjusted and matured that he knew how to handle situations better than most people you may know. He was a sarcastic, cocky, big-headed and sometimes a douchebag character. He was in love with Lorelei and not always in the right state of mind, but his heart decided for him.
Rydal is only showing up in the end but what little I got from him was enough:) I LOVE his character!
Tara Brown is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors and so when Blackwater, the first of her new series was released I knew I had to read it! From the beginning of the book the only indication that any of the characters are a witch is Grandmamma Holt, who has blessed Lorelei's stuffed bunny, in order to keep away the ghostly whispering she hears at night. Lorelei is growing up in Baton rouge in 1964, with a cruel mother, a father who is arranging her marriage to improve their position in society and a younger sister she wants to protect. She loses her best friend one day when their car breaks down and she is rescued by the mysterious Mr Whitlock. Whit then pursues her, rescuing her from a sexual assault by her fiancee, and though Lorelei is attracted to him she is also frightened by him. The night she is due to leave with him, Tara Brown's narrative becomes confused and the reader is left to assume what has taken place. My favourite part about Blackwater is when Lorelei meets with the Roses! For fans of Tara Brown I felt this was a brilliant connection! :-) I thought the way in which Lorelei discovered her witch powers helped to develop her character further and the scene with Grandmamma and her mother was both frightening and emotional. Tara Brown has created the perfect bad boy in Whit (*SIGH*), and I am excited to see how the story develops with his seemingly untrustworthy family. Book 2 now please????!!!!
****Review**** Blackwater witches are stronger than any other. Lorelei's heard the stories but in the Louisiana Bayou, tales are abundant and such magic does not exist. Or does it? She's felt the icy whispers against her cheeks at night. She's felt the energy popping at her fingertips but can't explain why these things are happening to her. She hides her oddities from everyone, especially her overbearing mother. Lorelei's life as a southern belle in 1964 might appear to be glamorous, but things aren't always as they seem. Eager to escape the cruelty and verbal abusiveness of her mother, she prepares to accept her fate and marry the most eligible bachelor in Louisiana. Her mother insists. When an unexpected event lands Lorelei in the hospital, the handsome and mysterious stranger who saves her life causes her to question her arranged marriage, her family, and her fate. As her lust for the stranger grows and her impending marriage grows closer, Lorelei discovers that sometimes the folktales spun in the Bayou hold more truth than lies. This story was absolutely amazing! This is my first time to read Tara Brown's work but it will not be the last. I remained completely enchanted throughout this entire novel and could not turn the pages fast enough. I devoured it in one day. Tara Brown has cast a spell on me and Whit is my new favorite bad boy!
I have a Blackwater Witches high! This book was AMAZING! I couldn't keep up with the page turning I was reading so fast. Lorelei was one strong young woman. She chose her battles against her mamma and being born and breed nothing but southern charm and force fed it a bit more by her evil witchy mamma made me cringe. The 1960s were hard, real hard for Lorelei until Whit came about and boy oh boy I want a piece of that southern charm he put out for Lorelei! Her knight in shining armour not just once but multiple times in different settings. Lorelei doesn't realize that Whit will do, and what he has done to her had her best interests and his own lust at heart. Lorelei wont realize what she is and needs to become and do until another choice presents it self. I do have to say though that I am kind of curious about Rydal.....(keep reading ladies ;)) hes kind of a wild card at this point but I am kind of drawn to him, oh and Marcus who isn't drawn to the "father" himself with out a bit of curiosity. I loved the "bouquet" of Roses in there that really shook things up and made me smile not to mention "bat shit crazy" (mentioned multiple times! :)) and "sweet baby Jesus" Tara you are a woman after my heart! lol keep them coming dear I LOVED this book!!!
First let me say the cover is freaking gorgeous,Blackwater was captivating action a page turning gripping all the way to the last page,This is one of my best read so far in 2013 Tara Brown became one of my favorite author takeing my breath away we her dark and seduction storys..That are so addicted,Blackwater start in Baton Rouge june 1964,

I don't move in the bed I don't move at all I wait I listen Lorelei, wake up. wake up Danger Then she meet the sexy Whit who trun her world and life up side down the chain of event that happend will with in this story will haveing u saying omg wtf going on from pass present future. With a ending you would never see comeing .a must read I try not to put spoilers in my review so hard not to
I was very pleasantly surprise by this book. As I started to read it I could care less about the proper lady and losing weight side of the story; or finding the perfect husband (meaning rich). But I completely felt in love with Mr. Whitlock and from the day he met Lorelie I was completely taken by the book. I read it in one night I had to, I wanted to know what was going to happen. Especially when the Devil’s roses where introduce which completely took me by surprise. I wasn’t expecting Ari’s powers to come and screw up my already broken heart. I was happy to see that all the characters I felt in love with made it to the end. This was a perfect introduction to a new series which I hope she continues soon. The story has everything action, happiness, sadness, tears… everything I love in a book.
So many questions: Will the Roses continue to appear on the blackwater series? How will Marcus be involve? Will the Blackwater witches appear in Redemption? What is Mr. Whitlock hiding?
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I received this ARC copy from Smashwords for an honest review. Holly smokes this was awesome!! I have liked ever book by Tara that I have read so far, and they just keep getting better and better. I LOVE how she brings out the dark side of things. I don't know how else to put it, but I am in love With Tara's writing! She brings to life feelings I know nothing about. Lol I love the story line. Set in Louisiana, 1963 and a little 2012. Lorelei is a bad ass character! I felt so helpless reading her story with her mother. If I could have gone into the book myself I would have! How could a mother be so cold and hateful? Mr. Whitlock....oh a man with a Scottish background and a soooo amazingly sexy accent! You got to love em... Thank you so much Tara Brown for letting me read/review this amazing book. Oh and one more thing. The hot and heavy, very hot ;) I recommend this book to everyone 18 up.
Good God no. Just no. Plain and simple. 65% of this book is brainless bullshit. Where something happened, but what?
The main character Lorelei is an insufferable, brainless twit. I don't think I've ever disliked a main character so much. But is this really about me? Hell yes it is! Because I had to sit through most of this book wanting to bash what was left of MY braincells out on my coffee table.
Oh, but then sweet Jesus, it happened! It truly happened! As I sat there reading the last of the book, I was caught, hook, line and sinker. The pages just exploded with the action I'd been waiting for through the whole damn book and I finally found out what had happened at the beginning. GAH!!!
In the end though, I have to say Lorelei is still a little insufferable. Although there is a bit of intrigue with her. AND thank God for explosive endings or maybe I'm a masochist, but I'm going to read the next book. Here's to hoping it's as good as this one ended.
What a great story, and I don't think it's only because I'm partial to witch stories and magic either. Lorelei doesn't know that she is a witch, and has no idea why she is woken up many nights, and always at exactly the same time, with a warning that she is in danger.
Blackwater Witches is set in Louisiana and the writing includes some southern dialect. I thought there was just enough to make you feel like they are in the south in the 60's, but not so much to bother me or take away from the story. This book is a great mix of paranormal and romance, and is for a mature audience. Lorelei's character really matures in this story, and I love her chemistry with “trouble on legs and sex on a stick” Whit. And if you've read Tara Brown's Devil's Roses series, you'll be happy to know that there is a little tie in to those books.
The beginning of the story in takes place 1964 where the young Lorelei is the perfect southern belle until she meets the mysterious Lord and starts questioning her soon to be life style. After the tragedy of her family dying and one of Whits secret comes out Lorelei spends the next 48 years running until she comes back home and under covers her families secrets. I could not put this book down. The book has paranormal romance and there was an added bonus that comes to help Lorelei and if you read tara previous books you will be giddy as i was to see who the help is. looking forward to book 2 and anything else written by Tara.
What a great read!! I knew that starting this book in the evening was going to be a bad idea. I didn't get much sleep because I could not put it down! In the story, we meet Loralei, a young Southern Belle living in the sixties. Life was pretty uneventful until Whit came along. He left her questioning many aspects of her life and what will be in her future. It soon turns out that Whit isn't at all what she expected. Her family is gone and she is left running away, for almost fifty years.
As she returns home, she will get all of her questions answered, will she be ready for it?
Brown has done it again. I will be waiting impatioently for book 2!
Where to begin?! Ive said it once, I'll say it again: Tara Brown is incredible! I've always been intrigued by stories set in the deep south, especially Louisiana (specifically New Orleans). I loved how it was set in the 1960s and how it was easy to see that it was a different world in the deep south during that time. Throw in descriptions of cypress trees in the eerie bayou and haunted, jazz filled streets, and I'm in love. This was like American Horror Story: Coven meets Twilight (if you can imagine what that's like)-- the perfect amount of darkness meets love story.
