This was so interesting - I can remember first hearing stories coming out of British Columbia Canada regarding the discovery of hundreds of unmarked graves at a former Indian Residential School. Like most people, I was saddened and outraged, even more so over the following weeks, when more and more 'discoveries' of even more unmarked graves started appearing almost Province by Province from across Canada, and even worse, reports of mass graves, student murders, 1000's of missing Indian students. Outrage flared to demonstrations, protests, vandalism, arson was committed against a number of churches, statues were toppled, flags were lowered , apologies were made and demanded. (Also, and no less importantly, T-shirts were sold, web traffic for media went up, politicians posed in saccharine displays of humility, millions of $$$ were allocated to investigate and exhume the multitude of crime scenes, millions (!!!), professors and even the Pope were influenced to get on board and support the whole thing as it rolled and picked up momentum)
3-4 years later, not one Indian child's body has been found, nor have any unmarked graves, most certainly no mass graves. No police investigations have been started for murdered or even supposed missing students. No apologies or explanations for any of the rumour panic that caused so much fear, horror, aversion and outrage. What happened?
This book looks into those stories and the subsequent unravelling of the mass moral panic hysteria that gripped Canada. The absolute lack of facts, the role of the media running with unchecked stories, then leaving the stories uncorrected, or un-retracted - absolute tabloid clickbait chasing behaviour from some of the biggest and best media companies in the Canadian Fifth Estate.
The book is comprised of a number of articles, essays, and investigative reports on the whole sorry mess.
Now, can we go back to calling Toronto Metropolitan University "Ryerson" again?
