Never play a game if you don’t really understand the stakes…

When Terry and Wayne stumble upon a backwoods bar while camping in the Rockies, they just want a beer and a burger. And maybe a warm bed for the night, if they’re lucky. Instead they find themselves in the middle of a strange group of disturbingly scarred locals, served by a one-armed bartender. Even the sexy waitress with the elaborate octopus tattoo has what looks to be…bite marks? They know they should leave. But when libido and booze lure them into the back room for the local highlight of Carioca Fish Bait Fridays, they find themselves unwitting players in a very dangerous game.

John Everson, Bram Stoker Award–winning author of seven novels, brings you Fish Bait, a savage bite of backcountry horror.

Terry and Wayne enter a bar. The bartendress invites them to play a game named "Fish Bait", a kind of human Go. The winner has a date with her. The loser has to step into a fish tank... wonderful story with some uncanny elements. Well written, to the point, with a nice twist at the end. What is peculiar to the crowd of this bar? Jump into the book and find out. Highly recommended!

This was a bit of fun but let down by the really quite predictable storyline. I didn’t love the writing either; it's a mass of cliches.

The premise is that we have two young men out camping in the woods when they stumble across an odd small town where the locals are all a bit strange. They should be afraid.

The lack of surprises was a shame but even though I did know/ have a pretty good idea what was going to happen it wasn't terrible but I just couldn’t get overly excited about this book.

A mediocre 3*/5

Fun, short read.

First story I have read by Everson. It was a fun, short read filled with a creepy cast of small town folk. Too bad it couldn't of been a bit longer. It would've been interesting to see where Everson could've taken the story.

I loved every novel, novella and short story I read from Everson and this is no different, it may be short but it’s sweet. A great horror story of a small town with big fish.
